Theodore “Theo” Decker (Ansel Elgort) was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption and even love. Through it all, he holds onto one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day: a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. Rated R; 149 minutes.

Todd DePastino – More on Lincoln and the Civil War Thursday, March 5 7 p.m. Assembly Room

Todd DePastino continues his discussion of the Civil War by comparing the grace of the Gettysburg Address with the inelegance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Both came from President Lincoln’s conflicted attitudes toward “contraband” – escaped slaves who ran to Union lines to help the war effort. At first, Lincoln ordered they be returned to their masters. Later, he realized these contrabands held the key to victory in a war that wasn’t going well for the Union. Lincoln finally accepted Emancipation “as a fit and necessary war measure” for suppressing the rebellion. In so doing, he changed the meaning of the war and the course of history.

Saturday Night at the Movies: “Jack Reacher” (2012) Saturday, March 7 7 p.m. Assembly Room

When ex-military cop Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) investigates an elite sniper charged with killing five people, he teams up with a beautiful defense lawyer. They soon find themselves drawn into a dangerous catand-mouse game in this exciting thriller. Rated PG-13; 130 minutes.

Local teacher Mike Penn spent six weeks as part of a research team installing automatic weather stations all over Antarctica. Mike will explain details of his experience, including the medical and psychological testing to be qualified, the challenges of living in extreme Antarctic conditions, the problems of doing simple functions like eating and going to the bathroom at minus 50 degrees in 80 mph wind and some of the unique characteristics of Antarctica. He will explain the United States’ presence, scientific purpose and facilities in Antarctica. Mike and his team traveled by helicopter to service weather stations, avoided crevasses, lived in tents and went where no human had ever been.

OPPORTUNITIES PING PONG “Great serve.”

“Boy, what a good volley that was.”

“You rat!”

Those are just a few of the comments you hear on Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. as you approach Activity Room 6. A few of our dedicated (but not necessarily athletic) ping pong players never held a paddle before joining the group; others are reviving their abilities from younger days. Whatever skill level you might be, please come and join us for an hour of good times and a little exercise.

LIFELONG LEARNING For most Americans, the history of the United States is built on a set of long-accepted beliefs about events, each of which resonates in the nation’s collective memory. But what if those beliefs, however familiar, don’t really tell the whole story? Our knowledge of history – or what we believe to be history – is the lens through which we view and interpret the world. When that lens is distorted with misleading information, it has powerful effects on how we perceive the present and how we make decisions in the future, from choosing whom to vote for to interpreting the latest developments in today’s news and opinion pieces. Delivered by award-winning scholar and Professor Mark A. Stoler, of the University of Vermont, these lectures demonstrate how reconsidering some of the most popular notions of U.S. history can yield new (and sometimes startlingly different) interpretations of political, social, economic and military events. More than just debunking commonly accepted accounts, you’ll be able to replace these misconceptions with insightful truths. The Kelso Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology has its roots in a program of archaeological field work in the Near East that began in 1924 focusing on the Lands of the Bible: modern day Israel, West Bank and Jordan. Its exhibits highlight daily life in ancient times, including landscape and settlement patterns; domestic and communal architecture; agriculture and food preparation; technologies, crafts and stylistic traditions; trade; religious observance; and memory and writing systems and practice. The museum is part of a multifaceted archaeology program that includes an ongoing excavation at Tel Zayit in Israel, as well as academic courses and a lecture program that brings leading archaeologists to Pittsburgh. Call the registration line by March 13 to reserve your seat.
