MVS Summer Olympics TUESDAY - FRIDAY, JULY 9 -12 7 P.M. Assembly Room

Last year’s Winter Olympics were so much fun that rather than wait another year, the RLEAC and Health and Welfare councils are again joining forces to produce the 2019 Summer Olympics. Events will include a video of our own Senior Synchronized swimmers, lawn darts, golf and other activities at 7 p.m. Like the Winter Olympics, we will conclude the games on Friday, July 12, with the awarding of medals, extinguishing the Olympic flames and an international tribute of culinary masterpieces from Chef Jim and Dining Services. Stay tuned for more details!

Rated PG; 105 minutes.

Book Discussion Group MONDAY, JULY 15 1 P.M. Activity Room 2

In July, read and discuss “Where The Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens. Steeped in the rhythms and shadows of the coastal marshes of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, this fierce, hauntingly beautiful novel centers on Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years in the marsh that she calls home. Kya’s heartbreaking story of learning to trust human connections intertwines with a gripping murder mystery, revealing savage truths.

OPPORTUNITIES Learn more about the Civil War this summer with a new program from Todd! All programs are completely accessible and adaptable to fit your needs.

July 18: Conquering Mexico One key cause of the Civil War was Westward expansion, especially conquest of territory as a result of the Mexican War. Many strongly opposed the war, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, who believed “Mexico will poison us.” He was right. Come hear how the Mexican War paved the way for a much bloodier Civil War.

The Road to the Civil War

Todd DePastino starts a new program on the Civil War, a conflict that was long in the making as the compromises that had held the Union together since the Constitution had finally shattered. Come hear about the Mexican War, debates over slavery, “Bleeding Kansas,” “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” the caning of Charles Sumner on the Senate floor, John Brown’s Raid, the election of Abraham Lincoln and what triggered the “Secession Winter” of 1860-1861. The fascinating stories may have you wondering not why the Civil War took place, but why it didn’t happen sooner!

Aug. 15: Slave or Free Land? The Mexican War added a huge swath of land to the United States, from Texas to northern California. The question became: would this land be Slave or Free? Come hear why Southerners insisted that slavery needed to expand and why “Free Soilers” believed slavery was harmful to white people. The two sides negotiated a compromise, which only inflamed passions more and inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe to write a novel that shocked the world and put America more firmly on the path of Civil War.

LIFELONG LEARNING America’s Founding Fathers

Thinking About Capitalism

July 1 - Patrick Henry’s Religion William Paterson’s Dissent

July 22 - Why Think of Capitalism

The story of America’s founding fathers– great men who debated, argued, persuaded and negotiated their way to the U.S. Constitution – is as dramatic and instructive as any in the nation’s history. And there is no better way to tell the story of the Founding Fathers than by pairing an eminent U.S. historian with the very institution that is most synonymous with American history, the Smithsonian. These men – Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton and many others – are larger than life in our collective memory, having near-mythical status. Similarly, the U.S. Constitution is the oldest continually-operating instrument of government anywhere in the world, serving as the backbone to the world’s most powerful democracy. Yet, few among us realize just how turbulent, contentious, even suspenseful the process was to draft and ratify it. That’s why The Great Courses and Smithsonian have joined forces to tell how this crucial drama in Western history unfolded.

July 8 - Roger Sherman’s Compromise Aaron Burr’s Treason

As the economic system under which we live, capitalism shapes the marketplaces that determine where you live and work, how much you are paid, what you can buy, what you can accumulate toward your retirement and every other aspect of a society based on monetary exchanges for goods and services. In an era of increasing globalization, capitalism has dramatically strengthened its important role in – and its influence on – the world economy. A majority of the world’s population lives under capitalism, which continues to strengthen the links of interdependence between the world’s economies. In “Thinking about Capitalism,” award-winning intellectual, historian and Catholic University of America professor Jerry Z. Muller takes you deep inside the perspectives on this most important and pervasive force. Gain fresh insights to strengthen your understanding of capitalism’s rich history, its fascinating proponents and opponents and its startling impact on our world over 36 engaging lectures.
