LIFELONG LEARNING

KEN BURNS’ FILM “HEMINGWAY”

MONDAYS, AT 4 P.M., ASSEMBLY ROOM

JAN. 7 - FEB. 10

Hemingway’s life was very troubled. His mother dressed him and his sister alike and introduced them as twins, which affected him later in life. He blamed his mother for his father’s suicide.

Hemingway developed a very terse writing method which was loved by some and criticized by others. Some books were an instant success, such as “The Old Man and the Sea” and “A Farewell to Arms.” “The Sun Also Rises” was not as well received.

Hemingway seemed to need adventure to spur his creativity, which included bull fighting, serving as an ambulance driver during World War I and as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War and World War II.

He was married three times, divorced twice, and had three sons. He continued his excessive drinking and wanderlust for adventure.

Hemingway experienced many head concussions, including injuries sustained while suffering two plane crashes in two days.

Hemingway was too ill to attend his Nobel Prize for Literature ceremony, and by this time, he and his wife, Martha, were living in Idaho. He was becoming paranoid and spent time at the Mayo Clinic without much success. At the age of 61, he committed suicide.

DINING RESTAURANT 43912

SAVORY GRUÈRE BREAD WITH HAM

INGREDIENTS

4 tbsp. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted and set aside, plus more for the pan

2 ½ cups allpurpose flour

1 ½ tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

½ tsp baking soda

1 cup coarsely chopped ham

3 tbsp thinly sliced scallions, white and green parts (optional)

1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme

2 cups (8 ounces) grated gruyère or sharp cheddar cheese

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 350. Butter and flour a metal 9 x 5-inch loaf pan and set it aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Stir in the chopped ham, thyme, 1 ¾ cup of the cheese (reserving the rest for topping) and scallions, if using.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, eggs and buttermilk. Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture and stir to combine. The batter will be thick. Transfer batter to the prepared loaf pan and spread it out evenly,

smoothing the top. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.

Bake 45 to 55 minutes until the top springs back when lightly pressed and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out with some light crumbs. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool for 10 minutes. Then, remove the bread from the pan and let it cool completely on the wire rack.

Use the bread for a grilled cheese sandwich or grill and place poached eggs on top with a little hollandaise, salsa, cheese or alfredo sauce. Or, place in toaster oven, then spread with a little butter and raspberry jam.

Composer Claude Debussy developed his love of the sea beginning with childhood visits to the Mediterranean. This imaginative, impressionistic sketch captures all the moods of the sea, from tranquil to ominous and stormy. The music evokes the myths and movement of deep water while the premiere of Sigfúsdóttir’s “Oceans” whirls with atmospheric flow. In another debut, soloist Vadim Gluzman plays Sergei Prokofiev with “one of the most beautiful sounds in the world.” Call James at 412-392-8801 for tickets.
