Located in the Star Points Building, the Barley Wellness Center offers state-of-the-art equipment, fitness classes and an indoor pool and spa. Trained staff will help you develop a personalized fitness program. Classes (All classes are free to residents.)

Tai Chi has been described as meditation in motion, gentle flowing movement performed in a slow, focused manner. Anyone can participate, as Tai Chi places minimal stress on muscles and joints. The benefits of Tai Chi include decreased stress, increased energy and improved flexibility and balance.

Todd DePastino: The Whiskey Rebellion

Todd tells the story of the Whiskey Rebellion, a massive armed uprising and secessionist movement in the American West, which then included Pittsburgh. Sparked by Alexander Hamilton’s excise tax on whiskey in 1791, the rebellion was the first major test of the newly constituted federal government and is still misunderstood today. Learn about the Mingo Creek Association, the proposed independent republic of Westsylvania, “Tom the Tinker” and General John Neville, whose mansion was burned to the ground in the Battle of Bower Hill in July 1794.

He started as a fireman and went on to become a shoemaker, a leader in the rebellion against the Stamp Act and a member of the Sons of Liberty.
The Occupation of Boston
The British military occupation of Boston
in 1768 caused a furor between the colonists and the British army.

Crispus Attucks: The Massacre’s Martyr
In March 1770, five colonists were killed by British soldiers. The fallout from this event led to the trial of perpetrators. At this time, a mixed-race sailor, Crispus Attucks, became an icon of African American patriotism.

Here is another shoemaker who was at the Boston Massacre and played a key role in the Boston Tea Party. He remained active in the fight for independence into his 90s.
Forging a Common Cause in the Colonies
The British punishment of the colonies after the Tea Party led to the formation of the Continental Congress. We will learn how they used media coverage and local committees to build a sense of common cause leading to the American Revolution.

BAKED SALMON NICOISE
INGREDIENTS
2 lb. salmon fillet, with or without skin. Skin will come off easily after baked.
2 tbsp. Dijon mustard
2 tbsp. olive oil
1 lemon, zested
4 sprigs of fresh thyme or ¼ tsp. dried
2 sprigs of fresh dill or ¼ tsp. dried
salt and pepper
1 piece of tin foil, large enough to fold in half and seal
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350. Lay foil on a sheet pan. Lightly oil the middle and place the salmon.
Sprinkle evenly with lemon zest, salt and pepper. Mix garlic with Dijon mustard and with the back of a spoon, rub onto salmon coating evenly.
Drizzle with olive oil and place thyme and dill on top. Bring foil sides up and over and then crimp ends to seal.
Place in the oven and bake for 20 – 25 minutes. Remove from foil onto serving platter and pour juice over. Serve with steamed green beans and rice for a nice healthy dinner or whatever else you like.

JULY MONTHLY DRINK SPECIAL
STICKY RUM BBQ SAUCE
INGREDIENTS
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup ketchup
½ cup dark rum
1 tbsp. jerk seasoning
1 tsp. lime zest
2 tbsp. lime juice
2 tbsp. soy sauce
1 tsp. ginger, grated fresh
2 garlic cloves, minced
DIRECTIONS
Combine all ingredients into a heavy bottom saucepan over medium heat. Simmer about 10 minutes until slightly thickened. Let it cool.
Yields: Approx. 2 ¼ cup. Double it up. It holds well in the refrigerator.
