LIFELONG LEARNING The World’s Greatest Churches We will trace the history of building churches, starting in the Holy Land. We will be learning a lot about art and history, starting with the definition of the word “church.” Programs beginning at 4 p.m., Mondays in the Assembly Room.
June 6 Hagia Sophia
This church existed for 1,000 years before becoming a mosque. Inside, we will see wonderful carvings, mosaics and the inside of the dome. The Cave Churches of Cappadocia Here in Turkey, the inhabitants carved into the hillsides elaborate churches with beautiful frescos.
June 13 The Great Churches of Russia We all think of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, but there is a ring of beautiful churches to see. Through the vandalism of the Visigoths and Communists, much of the interiors have been damaged, but the gilded golden domes have been restored. The Painted Churches of Romania Not only are there frescos on the inside of the churches, but here we see them on the exterior, as well. The exterior painting has a theme running along the entire outside of the building.
June 20 The Churches of Armenia In these churches located throughout Armenia, there is freestanding stone. The Churches of Georgia Not our southern state, but the former region of Russia. We will learn about their wonderful exterior stone carvings.
June 27 The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ethiopia Here are monolithic churches carved completely from one single piece of rock. The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, Spain In Cordoba, we visit a cathedral set into a former mosque. Now, we see a cathedral set into a former mosque.

In 2019, Phipps’ Summer Flower Show: “Van Gogh in Bloom” wowed thousands of guests with large-scale creations of the painter’s famed work. This time, Phipps turns its eye to another icon, presenting “Monet in Bloom,” based on the works of impressionist painter Claude Monet. Just as Monet painted outdoors to immerse himself in nature, Phipps now reimagines his art through the flora that inspired it, paying transformative tribute to “Water Lilies,” “The Saint-Lazare Station” and even the artist’s iconic studio boat through horticultural display.
