Isn’t It Romantic?

A Pianist in Leipzig

Clara

Carnaval

During this period of the 19th century, we see the development of Romanticism. This lecture will detail Robert Schumann’s early life, his talent for the piano and composing as a teenager. Before he started university, his life was affected by the tragic death of his sister and father.

In 1831, while at the University of Leipzig, Robert met his piano teacher’s daughter, Clara. He started to experience numbness in his hands, so he switched from playing piano to composing music. By 1833, illness and death caused a deep depression in Robert.

Clara’s father wanted to transform his daughter into a great pianist. Robert lived with the family for about a year. By the time she was 16, Robert and Clara were in love.

When Clara’s father found out about their romance, he took Clara away from Leipzig and cut all ties with Robert, which drove him into a deeper depression. Just before this, he had created a composition of 21 miniatures, set in a masked ball, Carnaval.

ART CLASSES NEW! Learn How to Cut Your Own Picture Mat

Brief History of the Art Studio By Donna Billings-Davis One of the most active places at Masonic Village at Sewickley is the Art Studio. More than 50 residents participate, either as an instructor, student or volunteer, at one of our resident functions.

Thursday, March 14 10 a.m. – Noon

In its early years, the studio had a large group of resident artists, with a ceramic kiln in the current puzzle room. At one point, the group dwindled, until 2019, when a committee was formed to stimulate resident use. We’ve done that by designing fun classes, making materials and tools more accessible and sponsoring annual festivals like “Art in the Air” and other presentations to showcase art at the village.

Art Studio

Instructor: Sibyl McNulty. If you’ve ever had a picture framed, you know how expensive it can be. One way to save money is to cut your own mat. The Art Studio has a mat cutter that can make the process easy. Cost: $5 donation for supplies. See p. 6 for more details.

DINING

Residents’ work is displayed throughout the studio with a designated area for our budding artists. A special corner is dedicated to work by residents who have passed away. Join us for some fun, laughter and creativity.
