Located in the Star Points Building, the Barley Wellness Center offers state-of-the-art equipment, fitness classes and an indoor pool and spa. Trained staff will help you develop a personalized fitness program.

Water Exercise

Improve your overall health with a combination of aerobic conditioning, resistance training and balance exercises, while enjoying the beautiful pool.

Fit for Life

Fit for Life focuses on balance, strength and flexibility for a better quality of life.

Our instructor, Claudia, will guide you through a gentle half-hour yoga session of seated and standing poses focused on strength, relaxation, balance and flexibility.

Golden Aerobics

Monday & Friday 9 - 9:45 a.m.

Assembly Room

Designed to work your entire body, this class will benefit individuals who are looking for an active cardiovascular workout with intervals of strength, flexibility and range-of-motion exercises.

Tai Chi

Tuesday & Thursday 10 – 10:30 a.m.

Assembly Room

Tai Chi has been described as meditation in motion, gentle flowing movement performed in a slow, focused manner. Anyone can participate, as Tai Chi places minimal stress on muscles and joints. The benefits of Tai Chi include decreased stress, increased energy and improved flexibility and balance.

Walking Group

Tuesday & Thursday 11 - 11:30 a.m.

Assembly Room

Our wellness staff will warm you up and cool you down with various exercises before and after a short walk. Join neighbors and friends for good music and conversation, all while contributing to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Stretching

Tuesday & Thursday 1:30 - 2:15 p.m.

Activity Room 6

The wellness team will guide you through gentle stretches to improve flexibility and balance and increase range of motion, making it easier to perform everyday tasks.

Masonic Village Rehab: Occupational Adaptive Equipment Open House

Learn more about adaptive equipment and why it’s important to ease your daily routine and prevent falls. Occupational Therapy will bring some of the most commonly used equipment, demonstrate correct techniques and make recommendations for patients where appropriate. All residents are free to bring their current adaptive equipment (reachers, shoe horns, dressing sticks) and/or anything they use to get through the day.

Churchill, Canada, is the self-proclaimed “Polar Bear Capital of the World.” Every October, dozens of polar bears gather around Churchill in anticipation of Hudson Bay freezing over, so they can head out on the ice to hunt for seals, their main food source. Unfortunately, this phenomenon may be coming to an end. Join Glenn as he shares his journey with other eco-tourists and learn about bears and other tundra critters.

GROUND CHICKEN NOODLE CASSEROLE

INGREDIENTS

4 tbsp. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, plus more for baking dish

1 (8-ounce) bag extrawide egg noodles

3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs

3 tbsp. olive oil

6 oz. sharp cheddar, grated (about 1 1/2 cups), divided

2 carrots, sliced

1 bell pepper, chopped

8 oz. mushrooms, sliced

1 cup frozen lima beans, thawed

1/2 yellow onion, chopped

2 garlic cloves, chopped

2 thyme sprigs, plus more for garnish

Kosher salt and freshlyground black pepper

1 lb. ground chicken

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup dry white wine

1 1/2 cup chicken stock

3/4 cup heavy cream

STEP 1

Preheat oven to 425. Butter a three-quart baking dish. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook noodles to al dente, typically 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and set aside. Combine panko, oil and 1/4 cup cheddar cheese in a bowl.

STEP 2

Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add carrots, pepper, mushrooms, lima beans, onion, garlic and thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Add chicken and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Add flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Add wine and cook until reduced by half, 2 to 3 minutes. Add stock and cream. Bring to a simmer and cook until just starting to thicken, 2 to 4 minutes. Discard thyme sprigs.

STEP 3

Combine noodles, chicken mixture and remaining 1 1/4 cups cheddar in a large bowl, stirring until cheese is melted. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer mixture to prepared pan and top with panko mixture. Bake until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

3 tbsp. olive oil

3 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

1 1/2 tsp. pure honey

Kosher salt and freshly-ground black pepper

1 lb. Brussels sprouts, trimmed and thinly sliced

INSTRUCTIONS

1 large gala apple, cut into matchsticks

1 small shallot, chopped 1/4 cup toasted hazelnuts or walnuts

1 oz. Parmesan, Asiago or Romano cheese, shaved

Whisk together oil, lemon juice and honey in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Add Brussels sprouts, apple, shallot and hazelnuts; toss to combine. Fold in Pecorino cheese.

A two-part opportunity awaits you! Don’t throw that pickle or mason jar away. Bring it with you.

On Friday, Oct. 18, Alice Lieb and Sibyl McNulty will help you transform that jar into a keepsake work of art by applying cut or torn tissue paper onto its surface. Wear clothes you can get dirty or bring an apron. If you don’t have an apron, we will have extras.

On Friday, Oct. 25, bring your container back (or if you missed the first class, bring a favorite vase not to exceed 4”.) Marcia Brackin and Cordelia Jacobs will help you design a take-home, fresh floral arrangement to enjoy. Fresh autumn flowers will be provided.

Extra pickle jars will be available if you don’t have a glass jar. A donation of $5 is appreciated to defray the cost of the flowers. Open to 16 people per session; please register with Karen Hammond.

We will explore the origins of the District of Columbia; learn about the designer Pierre L'Enfant; and discuss the colorful history of the National Mall, Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

The White House and the Presidency

See the Oval Office and the cabinet rooms on a tour of the White House and learn about its construction, burning, reconstruction and expansion.

Oct. 14

The Capitol Building and the Legislature

In the Rotunda, Statuary Hall and Hall of Corridors, we will see the design and construction of the Capitol building, including the Senate and House Chambers.

The Supreme Court and the Law of the Land

In the beginning, it was an itinerant legal body, until the building was completed in 1935. In addition to seeing the architecture, we will explore the Court in action.

The Nation’s Knowledge: Library of Congress

Tour the largest library in the world, starting with the monumental Jefferson Building, then the Adams and Madison buildings, and conclude at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

The State, Treasury and Justice Departments

See the State Department, Diplomacy Center and Diplomatic Reception Rooms. Then, the Federal Reserve Buildings, including the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the headquarters of the FBI.

Veterans Memorials on the Mall

Explore the various war monuments from Vietnam, Korea and the World War II Memorial.

Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon

We will visit the gravesites of famous people and learn about the connection between the cemetery and Robert E. Lee. Of course, this tour includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Marine Corps Memorial, Air Force Memorial and the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial.
