J.B., We Hardly Knew You!

Born in the red-light district of Hamburg, Johannes Brahms had an inferiority complex. His music instructor, who schooled him in the greats of the GermanAustrian tradition, recognized his talent at an early age.

Oct. 11

The Brothels of Hamburg

Working as a pianist in the bars and brothels of Hamburg, Brahms kept up with his classical studies.

After meeting a Hungarian violinist, he toured Europe. The contacts he made there would make him famous only seven months after leaving Hamburg.

Oct. 18

The Schumanns

The Shumanns who we will learn more about next year, were great

mentors to Brahms, publishing some of his work and writing articles praising his talent.

Oct. 25

The Vagabond Years

In his early career, Brahms took various appointments, but no longterm ones. His years conducting choirs helped him develop his musical maturity, a romantic melody and harmony with a background of classical formal structure.

Tim Merrill’s Grant Street Walking Tour (Rescheduled)

Wednesday, Oct. 26

1 p.m. departure

Free

Grant Street is Pittsburgh’s main thoroughfare. Ten years ago, it was designated by the American Planning Association as one of America’s 10 Great Streets. Concentrated in 11 blocks, this is Pittsburgh’s finest collection of historic buildings and modern skyscrapers, buildings that tell the stories of 20th century aristocrats and architects who shaped the city into an industrial and banking empire. In an hour and a half, we will visit a number of these buildings and walk into a few lobbies, including the Allegheny County Courthouse, which many architects say is the best building in the country. Call the registration line by Oct. 19 to register.
