Why Do Our Residents Flock to the Art Studio?
We instructors love our resident painters. Some come with vision problems; others have poor hand coordination, tremors and advanced arthritis. But with each person who comes regularly, we’ve watched them improve as they paint. We firmly believe it has something to do with using their creativity while in the studio.
Research shows that painting is good for the health of older adults. It can improve manual dexterity, engage the mind and various arm muscles, offer opportunities for socializing and conversation and boost morale and self-esteem.
Two of our residents, Jo Hannon and Jackie Eakin, for example, have limited sight. With a little guidance, both are producing wonderful landscape paintings. Asked why they come to the Art Studio, Jo says she has always wanted to take watercolor classes but didn’t have the opportunity. She was looking for an outlet after her husband passed away. Jackie loves the camaraderie and laughter; she especially loves having us encourage her watercolor painting efforts.
