Lifelong Learning

Wonders of the National Parks: A Geology of North America, Part 2

Sept. 2

Redwoods, Sequoias and the Sierra Nevada

What caused California gold deposits to occur, how did the glaciers sculpt the terrain of Yosemite and what special conditions promoted the growth of the giant sequoia?

Pinnacles to Joshua Tree: The San Andreas

We have learned about the San Andreas fault. Now, we will trace its routes through the Golden Gate to Mexico’s Sierra de San Pedro Martir in the south.

Sept. 9

Denali to Gates of the Artic

We return to the subduction plates of Alaska in the three largest national parks in the U.S.

Death Valley and the Great Basin

Just as Africa has a rift zone, so does the U.S. in Death Valley. This week, we will study the continental rifting that created the driest place in North America.

Sept. 16:

Shenandoah: The Collision of Old Continents

At one time, the continental collision raised the Appalachians to a height that rivaled the Himalayas. But time has eroded them. We will follow that geology from Newfoundland to Shenandoah National Park.

The Great Smoky Mountains and Hot Springs

What makes the Great Smoky Mountains the most visited national park, and how were the hot springs formed?

Sept. 23

National Rivers: Gorges, Falls and Meander

The Upper Missouri River Breaks, the New River Gorge and Niagara Falls are just some examples of the role water geology plays in scenic rivers, parks and water trails.

Great Sand Dune Fields of North America

The Colorado Rockies is not a place where you would expect to see sand dunes. We will learn how they occur, as well as other sites with sand dunes, such as White Sands and Death Valley.

Sept. 30

National Seashores and Lakeshores

Shorelines at Cape Hatteras, Cape Cod and other coastal parks abound with a dynamic process for dunes, salt marshes, ponds and lagoons.

Reefs: Virgin Islands, Florida and Texas

We will travel where reef creatures are helping to create new carbonate rocks and a massive reef from the past is now the towering height to Guadalupe National Park.

ART CLASSES

Meet Our Resident Artist

Spending time creatively can help you feel less anxious, depressed and even have less physical pain. How? It moves one’s focus away from their pain to their art.

Meet Mary Preuss, who says, “When painting, I lose myself for hours. Painting is the best nerve pill I can take.” Mary traveled the world and now is painting memories of her trips. She enlisted her instructors to help her over several months to recreate a detailed watercolor painting of the Temple of the Sun in Chichen Itza, Mexico, as a present for a special student. Her current project is to paint a loving likeness of her beloved cat, Keira. One time, I gave her a plant from my garden to paint, not realizing there was a live caterpillar inside. She just painted it into her finished piece. We all chuckled. She brings lots of laughter to our Wednesday afternoon watercolor sessions.

Cost: Your Lunch

Sewickley, dubbed “Queen of the Suburbs” back in 1895 by the author of the first blue book of Sewickley Society, is a charming old village with a lot of history. We will go back in time by exploring the impact of the three Rs: Road, River and Railroad. We will also see some fine houses built by notable architects and discuss Sewickley organizations known far beyond the local community. The walk will take an hour and a half, and then we will stop for a bite to eat. Sign up by calling the registration line; attendance is limited.
