What is a SMART Cottage? Learn the newest in senior living technology.
Inside Masonic Village's newest cottages, some SMARTHome technology will be installed, improving the design and assisting residents in maintaining independence as they “age in place." Some basic "smart" elements will be built into each of the new 72 units, but one specific cottage will receive an extensive package of features. These features will be tested to determine which will have the most benefit to residents in the future. Learn how these latest "smart" innovations could impact your life here at Masonic Village.
6
LEARN MORE! SMARTHome Design Presentation Thursday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. Deike Auditorium This initiative is a partnership between Masonic Village, RLPS Architects, Warfel Construction and K4Connect, the provider of the Village Connect portal. Presented by Patrick Sampsell, chief environmental and facilities officer for Masonic Villages, and representatives from the partners listed above.
NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION
Fire Safety at Masonic Village Dan White, director of safety and security
Peace of mind is a priceless benefit of living at Masonic Village. Masonic Village is one of the few retirement communities that have a full-time staff of internal security personnel who are available 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, to maintain a safe and secure living environment. A key focus for our security team is fire safety, which is a concern for many residents.
Building Design
We design and build according to federal, state and local codes including those from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Our designs include easy exits from all building locations; building materials that are more resistant to fire; buildings designed to contain or slow the spread of fire and smoke; sprinkler systems that activate during a fire to help reduce damage and also trigger alarms; smoke detectors in all buildings and cottages; and fire alarm pull stations located throughout apartment buildings. Masonic Village inspects and tests all alarms and sprinklers bi-annually and annually.
Fire Alarm Notification
All of our buildings have fire alarm notification systems that report to our on-site switchboard operator. If any smoke detector, sprinkler or fire pull station is activated, an audible fire alarm will sound in the building and an emergency notification will be sent immediately to the operator.
The operator will immediately radio the Security and Maintenance Departments. The local fire department is called during off-hours. If there is an active fire, additional emergency response personnel will respond, and Security and Fire Department personnel search the building and make sure everyone is out of the building. If an alarm is activated, immediately leave the building using the nearest exit. Remember to never use elevators. If you are unable to exit your apartment or cottage, call the operator at ext. 200. Finally, once outside, do not go back into the building until emergency responders and security officers give permission.
Prevention
Remember, most fires in the home are started in the kitchen. Fortunately, there are tips on how to avoid accidents. Never use your oven or stove top as a storage area. Do not store items too close to the stove or leave your stove or oven unattended when cooking or baking. Also, remember to make sure burners are completely turned off when you finish cooking. Educational sessions on fire safety will be available in the future. As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding our fire protection systems or fire safety in general, don’t hesitate to contact me or one of our patrolling officers.

A New Home Health Service is here for you.
Because
home is where the heart is. Ashlar Home Health, which will be called Masonic Village Home Health by late summer, received its accreditation. Currently, service is available to residents with Medicare Part A. Staff are in the process of applying to be able to serve those with other insurances. In the meantime, they will coordinate home health care services for residents with outside agencies, serving as an advocate and resource to ensure your care is well managed. Once a Medicare certification is acquired and contracts with additional insurances are established, home health will be available to more residents, and eventually, to the local community. Questions? Speak with Cheryl Hohrath, director of home health, by calling ext. 14050 or by emailing MVEhomehealth@masonicvillages.org.
