NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION

Live Long and Healthy Stacy Schroder, director of wellness and prevention

Leading a long and healthy life requires more than eating right and exercising. It also takes maintaining good mental health, a healthy self-image and a healthy lifestyle. Staff at the Baird Wellness Center are always here to help you on your journey to better wellness. Through personal training, fitness classes, various massages and workshops on nutrition, stress management and brain health, you can explore and improve each and every part of your health. Here are eight ways to start!

Drink More Water

Most of us don’t drink the proper amount of water our bodies need. Sixty percent of our bodies are made of water, and keeping your body hydrated can actually flush out toxins, treat headaches, relieve fatigue and aid in weight loss. Try carrying a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep may be one of the most under appreciated aspects of good health. More than benefiting your energy level, sleep is important for maintaining a healthy memory, something many of us worry about as we get older. At least seven to eight hours of sleep is needed each night.

Meditate

Meditation quiets your mind and calms your soul, aiding in brain health. Meditating can even improve concentration and slow aging! Don’t know how to meditate? Don’t worry, you can learn how at the Baird Wellness Center.

Exercise

You should exercise not only a few times a week, but every day. Research has shown that exercising daily brings tremendous benefits to our health, including

lowering the risk of diseases and bone density loss. Try starting with 30 minutes of exercise per day.

Eat More Fruits

Fruits provide a plethora of vitamins and minerals. Do you know that oranges offer more health benefits than vitamin C pills? Fill your plate with these nutritious fruits: watermelon, apricots, avocados, apples, cantaloupe, grapefruit, kiwi, guava, papaya and strawberries. Most fruits are a great source of fiber, and some even improve your skin complexion!

Eat More Vegetables

Experts suggest we should have five to nine servings of fruits/vegetables a day. Unfortunately, most people don’t even meet five servings. Some of my favorite vegetables include: black beans, asparagus, French beans and carrots. These vegetables are all easy to slip into your favorite dishes.

Be Positive

Positive mental health is an important part of a healthy life. Purge negative people from your life. If you feel that a friend is overly critical or negative, let him or her go. Also, purge negativity from yourself. Listen in on your thoughts and get rid of negativity. De-stress yourself by listening to music, meditating or taking a moment to think about something positive.

Live with Purpose

Are you living a life of meaning? Try to incorporate the things you love most into each day. Consider it part of your health! Live in the moment, achieve balance, live by your values, and experience true contentment in your life.
