NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION

A Successful Year at the Village Cindy Phillips, executive director As I approach the end of my fourth year as your executive director, I find myself especially grateful. Our staff and volunteers are amazing, and we are so blessed for the many generous donors who make our Mission of Love possible. I visit many other communities throughout the year, and I always return knowing how special Masonic Village is.

and providing services to those returning from the hospital or with chronic conditions to prevent hospital visits. Masonic Village Home Health, Hospice and Home Care will continue as critical contributors to our community's wellness.

A Successful Year

As I look ahead to 2018 (and beyond), our priorities continue to be you - our residents and employees - as well as financial stewardship. These are linked together, as we are challenged to provide the same quality services with a projected labor shortage and decreasing healthcare reimbursement and insurance coverage. It's a tall order, but we've proven for more than 100 years we know how to evolve and adapt.

As I look back on 2017, there are a few highlights that stand above the rest. First, we became an overall 5-star facility through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Our Masonic Health Care Center staff, from nursing, environmental services, social services, therapeutic recreation, rehab, maintenance and food services, worked hard to achieve this goal. While this is the first time we've been awarded that 5th star, we've always known we provide the highest quality of care. A second major accomplishment in 2017 was the renovation of Grand Lodge Hall’s restaurant and kitchen. This historical space will now move forward as two beautiful restaurants with expanded seating and outdoor dining. Additionally, the opening of the Goose and Gridiron Tavern provides a space to enjoy gatherings of all types. The entire "Main Street Corridor" has proven to be a welcomed enhancement to your daily activities, and we are proud that we've modernized it while maintaining and respecting its original grandeur.

Lastly, as part of our commitment to home and community-based services for our residents and the surrounding community, 2017 debuted our new home health service. We are now growing

Looking Forward

Early in the New Year, we will continue with the master plan to keep our campus viable and appealing to both our current and future residents. As the Grand Lodge Hall project finishes, we will begin renovating our Freemasons Cultural Center, including the Three Loaves CafĂŠ, Deike Auditorium, Brossman Ballroom and the connecting common areas. In April, we will finish the last of the 72 new cottages along Commandery Road. Since retirement living started here in 1990, we've grown about 300 living units each decade, only deciding to build when the economy and the demand could sustain it. We consistently selected the right style and number of units to achieve a significant number of reservations before the project was started, maintaining our strong occupancy. While the Townhomes at Sycamore Square project has started a little slower, it is a new service line beyond

the traditional continuing care retirement community housing market. It will position us to provide another option for prospective residents to join our community. We fully expect to have enough reservations secured by next summer to begin construction and make the Townhomes at Sycamore Square a reality. So, why do we keep growing? The answer is quite simple: demand. Adding cottages or townhomes allows us to meet the growing demand for baby boomers on our wait list and others who want to move to Masonic Village. With our amenity-rich campus, adding residents also enables us to spread our fixed costs for things like dining venues, roads, computer systems, wellness facilities and even staff salaries. This growth will help us absorb the increasing costs of operating a campus like ours. One of the main reasons our cost control has become more difficult is the rising gap in healthcare reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid. In 2017, our charitable spending will likely exceed $25 million in Elizabethtown alone, with more than $15 million representing losses from skilled nursing care. While remaining committed to our mission, this level of charitable care is unsustainable. If the Medicaid funding and policies change as predicted, it could increase that loss by 30 percent or more. We are examining every option to continue providing the highest levels of care in ever-changing ways.

2017-2018 MASONIC CHILDREN’S HOME

Giving Catalog

Our home and community-based services, use of technology (like K4 automation) and creative sustainability efforts with other healthcare providers are just a few of the initiatives we've started so far. In addition, we will continue mission reviews of all departments to ensure we eliminate or limit losses that are not supporting core resident services. Lastly, the third critical priority for 2018 and beyond is our employees. With more staff retirements and an increasingly competitive recruiting climate, we know our culture and work environment are keys to attracting and retaining the workforce of the future. In 2017, we began a new partnership with the county’s IU13 unit to provide skill-building opportunities for students from Columbia and Donegal High Schools. We hope to expand this to the Elizabethtown Area School District in 2018. Since it's getting more difficult to find high-quality employees like we have today, we continue to focus on employee satisfaction. While many things change each year at the Village, we never lose sight of our Mission of Love. As each year passes, we have many achievements and positive changes. However, each year also brings a new set of challenges. I am optimistic we are up for the task and will continue to keep our Village beautiful, safe and a wonderful place to call home. Happy New Year, and may yours be filled with hope, good health and much happiness.
