NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION
New Commandery Cottage Landscaping Scott Ruth, director of land management
It's been an exciting year up on the hill off Templar Drive! The Landscape Department moved into their new building on Pump House Lane on Feb. 1, 2017, while demolition and earth-moving started on the new Commandery Road cottage site. Ebersole Excavating, B.R. Kreider Excavating and the Warfel Construction Company teamed up to build 72 new cottages, scheduled for completion in summer 2018. Now, less than a year later, all 72 foundations have been placed, with nearly 14 cottages completed! Our first residents moved in early November. Landscaping is one of the last items to be completed on the new cottages. Warfel Construction put that responsibility in the very capable hands of Brandt’s Landscaping. Owner Jon Brandt is working closely with our Landscape Department to ensure Masonic Village’s satisfaction with the progress of “greening up” the new site, which Rettew Associates designed. In late spring, as the huge piles of soil were relocated, Brandt’s Landscaping was busy following behind, stabilizing the completed areas with grass seed, straw and matting. Landscaping the site calls for nearly 400 deciduous and evergreen trees, along with over 300 shrubs and ornamental grasses throughout the neighborhood’s common areas. The cottage foundations have four
individual landscape designs to complement each style of build. In October, more than 600 shrubs and 25 ornamental flowering trees were ordered, so any cottages completed during fall 2017 would be landscaped for the new residents moving in. Recently, "Old Man Winter" awoke from his nap, and the landscaping on the project has slowed down. Brandt’s assured us they will keep landscaping throughout the winter as weather permits - mostly common area tree planting and patio installations. Landscaping around cottage foundations starts back up in spring. Cottages landscaped last fall will be tidied up this spring, cleaning up the winter construction debris and straw that blew over the newly mulched beds. Masonic Village’s Landscape Department hired one new staff member in January and will hire a second new employee in early spring to assist with maintaining the new neighborhood. Our Landscape Department will install annual flowers to each of the new cottages in May. As the warm weather returns, so will the "greening up" of our newest cottage neighborhood!
