NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION

Village Connect: A New Information Portal for Residents Mark Eyer, director of retirement living

In 2016, Masonic Village formed a partnership with K4 Connect, a company that provides a communications product which can better connect residents and employees. Later in the year, Masonic Village piloted K4 Connect technology with approximately 30 residents in Sycamore North Apartments. Internet connectivity was provided, and participants used a tablet device to access K4 Connect. With the product, residents were able to control their thermostats, lighting and television in their apartments. They were also able to use safety sensors that would turn on bathroom lights; monitor their fitness devices; play games; and communicate with family and friends at no charge. The pilot proved to be a success and led to the next phase of Masonic Village’s partnership with K4 Connect: designing a portal specific to the needs of Masonic Village residents.

Village Connect

K4 Connect assisted us in creating a portal, which is a specially designed application that can serve as a single point of access for information. Two hundred residents will pilot the portal, which will be accessible through a smart phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. Residents can use their personal Internet service or use free Wi-Fi that is available at various locations on campus.

16

What is on the Portal and Why Should I Use it?

The portal, also known as “Village Connect,” will allow residents to receive urgent messages and easily connect with family and friends. Restaurant and café menus will be at the user’s fingertips, along with current Masonic Village publications including Village Voice and Village Living. Updates from the Baird Wellness Center and the outside community will also be available. Campus presentations, such as Cindy Phillips’ PowerPoint on Grand Lodge Hall renovations, will be available for Village Connect users.

What’s Next?

Based on feedback we receive from trial users, we will continue working with K4 Connect to extend the portal and build better communication. In the new cottages, we are working to develop products that will support the potential for “smart home” devices. These devices may include lights, thermostats and motion sensors that can be controlled with a smart phone, tablet or computer.

Sign up to Use Village Connect Portal

We’re welcoming volunteers for the pilot project. Sign up in the Retirement Living Administrative Office. Give it a try, and see what all the excitement is about!
