NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION

Creating Moments that Matter Maureen Dolk-Metcalfe, director of hospice services

As the holiday season approaches, it’s a great time to be enjoying family, friends and hobbies; all things that make life worthwhile. While in our care, many patients reflect upon their lives, telling us what they enjoy most and about things they wish they could do once more. Staff and I often make it our mission to grant those last requests, which can range from having a couple’s date night with take-out food to riding a horse. No matter the complexity of what we accomplish, to see the smile plastered across a patient’s face and the joy in their family members’ eyes is not something that can be easily forgotten. So far, in 2016, we have helped many make memories that can be cherished. On a sunny March day, Masonic Village Hospice took a resident and Army veteran on a last flight across Gettysburg battlefield. Memories of his time in the sky immediately came back to the avid pilot, who took plenty of flights for fun in his younger years. The family man raised his children before getting into the expensive hobby, and usually had his sons, who were then old enough to appreciate the once-in-a-lifetime trips, by his side. Timothy Nickel, hospice chaplain, teamed up to arrange the flight with volunteer Masons who have now formed project Brother Flight. The group will help fund, gather volunteers and pilot future flights for Masonic Village Hospice patients.

This summer, we enlisted members of the Garrison Carida, a Star Wars costuming group, to surprise a 27-year-old patient, who had been a fan since childhood. He was surprised with a meet-and-greet, gifts and personal screening of the newest movie. The experience surely brightened his day and brought cheer to hospice staff who were excited to witness the special moment. The group also brought smiles to Masonic Health Care Center residents, kids of the Masonic Village Child Care Center, Adult Daily Living Center participants, staff and their children (pictured above). This year, we also focused on creating simpler memories including taking patients fishing and out to eat at favorite local restaurants, going on spa trips and taking patients to visit home towns and family members. Since 2009, Masonic Village Hospice has cared for hundreds of patients and families, focusing on the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients so they may complete their lives joyfully. Masonic Village Hospice not only serves residents and their families in the comfort of their homes, but those residing throughout Lancaster, Dauphin, Lebanon and Eastern York counties as well. We are looking forward to growing our program and continuing to provide top quality service for years to come.

23 EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY BY KATHY COOGAN

“November is the pearl-grey month, the changeling between warm crimson October and cold white December; the month when the leaves fall in slow drifting whirls and the shapes of the trees are revealed. When the earth imperceptibly wakes and stretches her bare limbs and displays her stubborn unconquerable strength before she settles uneasily into winter. November is secret and silent. -ALISON UTTLEY, WRITER
