NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION
The Spiritual Gift of Giving Pastor Preston Van Deursen, director of pastoral care
As we approach the holiday season, we are reminded of the spiritual gift of giving, an innate ability to see the needs of others and to use our resources to help them. These resources are more than just monetary gifts, they can also include lending your talents and time. Each of us has a specific talent to share. These talents may include sewing, cooking, building, writing and more. With these talents, we can sew clothes for the needy, cook for those grieving the loss of a loved one, help build houses for the homeless and write letters to brighten the days of others. Sometimes, we take our talents for granted and do not always see how they can benefit others, but, those with the spiritual gift of giving always feel compelled to share these abilities for the greater good. Residents and community members donate their talent, time and money through the Outreach Program of Sell Chapel.
16
Together, we contribute monthly to a variety of chosen charities. These charities have included the CROP Hunger Walks to end hunger and poverty; local homeless shelters; the Elizabethtown Community Food Bank; Communities That Care to reduce youth violence and alcohol abuse; Hope Within to provide mental health services for the uninsured; and Operation Christmas Child to deliver holiday gifts to children in need.
In addition, the Sell Chapel congregation and community members operate the Employee Assistance Fund for Masonic Village employees and their families. The fund has assisted more than 25 employees so far this year. Recently, the fund was able to assist a couple whose child was born with a heart defect. The child’s condition has required extensive and financially draining surgery and prolonged hospitalization. In addition, the Sell Chapel congregation is currently helping Masonic families in Texas and Florida who have been set back by the recent hurricanes. We have already provided $10,000 in assistance. In addition to monetary donations, the giving of your time can also change someone’s life. Volunteering not only improves well-being and life satisfaction, but it’s also linked to increased happiness and a longer life span. When you volunteer, you experience stronger social relationships, purpose and that “feel good” feeling we all crave. Within Sell Chapel, consider participating in committees, visiting members of the congregation, serving as an altar guild and singing in the choir. These are all ways to enhance someone else’s life, as well as your own. May each of you have a blessed holiday season and contemplate how you can express your spiritual gift of giving.
