NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION
Your Pharmacist is Here to Help Don Brindisi, pharmacy manager
October is National Pharmacists Month. Many do not know Masonic Village has four licensed pharmacists on campus. With a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, pharmacists are medication experts that have gone through many years of rigorous training enabling them to provide a wide array of services. Masonic Village pharmacists are an integral part of your health care team. On a day-to-day basis, physicians and nurses rely on their knowledge to maximize drug therapy and the safe and effective use of medications. This can involve checking for possible drug interactions, avoiding allergies, ensuring correct dosage and answering drug information questions from physicians. At Masonic Village, residents’ medical charts in the Masonic Health Care Center are reviewed monthly in order to find new ways to improve resident care and quality of life. In addition to physicians and nurses, pharmacists are a valuable resource to residents’ families. Often times, patients get confused about the medications they are taking and may experience undesirable adverse side effects. Luckily, for these individuals and their families, pharmacists can answer any questions that come to mind, without the need for an appointment. To avoid added confusion, consider filling all of your
prescriptions at the same pharmacy. This will provide your pharmacist a better opportunity to monitor your medication history. Pharmacists can now administer vaccinations to patients. Vaccines for the flu, shingles, hepatitis, pneumococcal pneumonia, and many others are available at the campus pharmacy without an appointment. Make sure you take advantage of this convenience, especially with flu season approaching. We have some exciting new projects starting in the pharmacy. First, we are working on an Antibiotic Stewardship Program that will create guidelines for physicians to select the best antibiotic treatment for residents. We are also exploring the establishment of a Coumadin Clinic. If approved, this new clinic would enable our pharmacists to make adjustments to Coumadin (a common blood thinner) doses to improve medication efficacy and patient safety. Please stop in during October for promotions and giveaways to celebrate National Pharmacists Month.
