ON-CAMPUS NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION

Preparing For Flu Season

Donna Hershey, R.N., director of personal care and outpatient services As we approach fall, it is time to gear up for football and flu season! Influenza (the flu) is a contagious disease that spreads across the United States on an annual basis, usually from October through May. Masonic Village was very fortunate to have a mild flu season this past year, and we are working to make this year a mild one as well.

that the high-dose vaccine is more efficacious. However, after reviewing the most current literature, the Masonic Village pharmacy ordered the high-dose vaccine for our flu shots this year. The high-dose vaccine contains a higher dose of antigen than the regular vaccine, thus, it is expected to provide a more robust immune response.

The flu is caused by the influenza viruses and is mainly spread by coughing, sneezing and close contact. There are multiple flu viruses which shift annually. Thus, a new vaccine is made each year in an effort to protect against the three to four viruses that are projected to cause disease in the upcoming season. While receiving the vaccine doesn’t guarantee protection against getting the flu, it certainly lessens the severity should you contract the illness. It also helps you from spreading flu to others.

As in past years, we will be providing flu shots to our residents and staff (high-dose vaccines for residents and quadrivalent vaccines for staff). Both vaccines are preservative free and contain no live flu virus; in other words, the vaccines cannot cause the flu. Medicare B and most Medicare Advantage plans cover the flu vaccine.

Flu symptoms usually occur suddenly and last several days. Symptoms vary by age but usually include: fever/chills, sore throat, muscle aches (think Mack truck), fatigue (think, “I can’t get off the couch or out of bed”), cough, headache and runny or stuffy nose. In its severest form, the flu can also lead to pneumonia and overwhelming infection. There are multiple types of flu vaccines available. People over 65 have access to two types: a regular dose (which can be either a tri- or quadrivalent vaccine) or a high-dose vaccine formulated specifically for those 65 and older. Until now, there hasn’t been clear evidence

How do we stop the spread of flu? Stay home if you aren’t feeling well, and only leave to receive medical care. Also, avoid crowds or other social gatherings, wash your hands and get your flu shot! Antivirals such as Tamiflu® (generic oseltamivir), Relenza® (generic zanamivir) or Rapivab® (generic peramivir) can be used to treat the flu but must be started as early as possible, usually within 48 hours of symptoms in order to be most helpful. Treatment also includes adequate fluids, rest and acetaminophen for fever. Look for more information concerning the locations, dates and times to receive flu shots on campus.
