Massing of the Colors Tribute Flag Installation

SATURDAY, NOV. 2, 9 A.M.

Veterans Grove

Grids will be measured and marked on Friday, Nov. 1, at 9 a.m. Many volunteers are needed to install the field of flags for this annual tribute. Meet at the Veterans Grove parking lot, and join with members of the National Sojourners, Harrisburg Chapter No. 76, in remembering and honoring more than 7,000 U.S. military personnel, including those from our own state, who have died in the war on terrorism since 9/11. Dress for cold weather and wet ground. Coffee, hot chocolate and donuts will be available for those who assist. Helpers will also be needed for flag removal at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13 (in the case of rain, removal will be postponed to the next dry morning).

Election Day

TUESDAY, NOV. 5

Voters across Pennsylvania will cast their ballots in statewide and national races. This includes presidential, congressional (U.S. House and Senate), row office (attorney general, auditor general, and treasurer), and legislative elections. Polls are open continuously between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. For those who vote off of campus and need transportation, please call ext. 33818 to make a reservation.

Veterans Day 2024 Program: Service and Sacrifice

MONDAY, NOV. 11, 2 P.M.

Brossman Ballroom

The Veterans Committee, on behalf of the executive director and staff of Masonic Village Elizabethtown, invites all residents and employees to its annual Veterans Day Commemoration. This year’s guest speaker is Major General Mark J. Schindler, Adjutant General of Pennsylvania and director of the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The March Masters, Masonic Village Men’s Chorus and the Colonial Color Guard from National Sojourners Chapter No. 76 will also participate. Attending veterans and spouses are invited to an informal reception hosted by the Grand Chapter of Pennsylvania, Order of the Eastern Star, in the FCC Atrium immediately following the program. Help for Our Heroes donations will be accepted at the doors.

Generations Big Band

Central PA’s premier big band includes 16 instrumentalists and two singers. They feature music from the Great American Songbook and beyond, offering a variety of music for your listening and dancing enjoyment. The ABCs of Medicare

Every year, changes are made to Medicare, and this year is no different. This presentation will discuss the basics of original Medicare, Medicare supplemental options, Part D prescription coverage and the changes for 2025. There will also be opportunities for assistance with your Medicare planning. Instructor Travis Albanesius is a licensed Medicare advisor at DeverCare Insurance.

Let’s Talk About Dogs

This discussion topic was a suggestion from the Masonic Village Pet Club and is geared for our residents who have canine companions. As we all know, these companions give us great joy! At this get-together, share problems, concerns, issues and needs. We also will learn about the use of dogs at the Masonic Health Care Center and other topics. Homemade cookies and Masonic Village cider will be served, and there will be a special treat to take home for your canine companion.

The Evolution of American Federalism, Part 1

Over 250 years, the pendulum of federal versus state power has swung back and forth, and it continues even today. Step back and examine American political history as Professor Joseph Hoffmann takes us into the heart of American law and political theory that are part of the political landscape today. Part 1 topics include Federalism: America’s Great Innovation; States Can’t Nullify Federal Laws; Guns, the Military and Foreign Affairs; and Borders, Immigration and Citizenship. How Railways Transformed the World, Part 1

This talk explores the natural beauty of Iceland, focusing on landscapes and the history of volcanoes and glaciers. Delve into the magical beings that influence people and nature from the viking gods, like Odin and Thor, to the hidden folk in more recent times, like fairies and elves. Dr. Robert Wheelersburg will lead this talk and has been traveling to Iceland for over four decades to serve in the military and conduct research.

The Arts and Crafts Movement began in England in the Victorian Era and quickly followed in America as a response to the manufacturing changes of the Industrial Revolution. Dan Kennedy is an award-winning composer, pianist and recording artist from western Massachusetts, whose solo piano music has been lauded across the country for its style and feeling. Swimming: From the English Channel and Vermont to the Italian World Championships

The librarian turned marathon open water swimmer turned ice swimmer Louise Darlington will share her adventures of how she learned to love swimming in 32°F water. Hear her tales from across the globe and what it takes to be an endurance open water and ice water swimmer. She will detail what it is like to swim and train for events in the Catalina, English and North Channels, as well as within the Arctic and Antarctic Circles. She will also discuss the upcoming World 2025 Ice Swimming Championships in Molveno, Italy.

A nominee for the 5th annual Central PA Music Hall of Fame, South Mountain is a well-known bluegrass Americana and folk band. Nevin Jackson, one of the best known and loved local string music teachers, leads this quintet on banjo and vocals. Ken Gehret is on fiddle; Dale Dourte on guitar, mandolin, banjo and vocals; Suzanne Molitoris on mandolin, guitar and vocals; and Sarah Molitoris on bass and vocals. Joanne Swords-Wang Harp Concert

Joanne Swords-Wang has played the harp for nearly 30 years for weddings, receptions and other fine occasions, including Sunday brunches at Masonic Village. She plays the cello for a local string quartet, the viola and violin for two community orchestras, the piano for church services and sings with the Lancaster Opera Company. The Baird Wellness Center offers an array of cardiovascular and strength equipment, functional training, personal training and group fitness classes. Massage therapy and wellness workshops on mind, body and spirit are also offered.

Staff are available Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Group exercise classes are broadcast on MVTV Monday through Friday, in the morning.

Help us bring to children in need overseas

by donating a gift to Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox Project.

Volunteers are collecting small children’s items to fill shoe boxes to send to children in need around the world. Toys, school supplies, personal care items, clothing and craft items will be accepted until Monday, Nov. 18.

ROOSTER WOODSHOP

Masonic Village Rooster Woodshop is located on the corner of Freemason Drive and Umbaugh Drive. The showroom is open Monday through Friday, from 8 – 11 a.m. and 1 – 3 p.m. It is also open on Saturday, from 8 – 11 a.m. There are many assorted items produced by the members. All items on display are for sale, and all Masonic Village residents and employees receive a 15% discount on a showroom item priced $100 or more. The shop can produce custom furnishings and novel items from wood, and members can also perform minor repairs to furniture upon request. Scan the QR code for a link to our Facebook page.

Dave Koch is one of the fine members of the Rooster Woodshop. He is shown here with a unique table that has storage cells for nine bottles of wine. It also has hangers for wine glass stemware and a drawer for other items, like a cork removal tool. This table has already found a customer; however, we can build another, perhaps to your specification. Come in and see all the creations in our showroom.
