The Science of Extreme Weather Part I

We take pleasant weather for granted, but it’s the extreme weather that really grabs our attention. Presented by an award-winning university professor who is a meteorologist and storm-chaser, Part I topics include winds, humidity, storm radar-tracking, thunderstorms and lightning. Propaganda and Persuasion

Life Long Learning Center
While persuasion, propaganda, manipulation and coercion have always been a part of the human experience, in the 20th and 21st centuries, we’ve seen an increase in mass media and an explosion of digital messaging, making it critical that we understand the tools and science of persuasion. Over their reigns, monarchs from Denmark, Holland, Norway and Sweden have fought, won and lost some of Europe’s largest wars; ruled empires that included overseas territories; and attained a permanent legacy in their realms. Come explore these fascinating but scarcely known European royal families with Dr. Robert Wheelersburg, who has studied Scandinavia for nearly 40 years. Barry Yiengst, Magician

GLH Solarium
Barry Yiengst became interested in the art of Magical Illusion at age 10, when a favorite uncle gave him a magic set for Christmas. Those simple props became a springboard to a performing profession that has spanned 50 years. Barry uses audience participation and clean, lighthearted humor to enhance the wonder of Magical Illusion. A second show will take place on Friday, Oct. 13, at 3 p.m., in the Keystone Room.

Scott Baylor, Elizabethtown Area High School chemistry and forensic chemistry teacher, will discuss the case of Jack the Ripper, an unidentified serial killer active in the impoverished Whitechapel district of London, England, in 1888. If you had polio, would you like to join a post-polio support group? If so, we would love to hear from you. Caregivers are also welcome. At this point, we want to identify other “survivors” to learn if there is sufficient interest in moving ahead with this effort. The plan would be to meet occasionally to share experiences and personal care ideas with some educational component as we determine fits the need of the members.
All inquiries will remain confidential until we feel there are enough people to establish a meeting time and date. Meetings will likely be held at a convenient location in the Grand Lodge Hall. Located in the Freemasons Cultural Center, the Baird Wellness Center offers an array of cardiovascular and strength equipment, functional training, personal training and group fitness classes. Massage therapy and wellness workshops on mind, body and spirit are also offered.
Open daily, from 5 a.m. – 9 p.m. Staff are available Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Group exercise classes are broadcast on MVTV Monday through Friday, in the morning.
Please purchase punch cards at the Baird Wellness Center. Punch cards are a way to “pay as you go” to land and aquatic classes. You will receive the option of attending 10 classes per punch card, and punch cards are available for $35 each. For questions, call 717-361-5699.

A collection box is available in the James Buchanan Clubhouse Lobby and in the Grand Lodge Hall for unwrapped gifts you would care to donate. Gift ideas include small toys, toiletries, crafts and stuffed animals.

Wreaths Across America 2023
Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 3,700 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad, including our own Masonic Village Cemetery. Save the date for this year’s event on Dec. 16. The theme is Serve & Succeed.
Wreath sponsorships are for sale during resident Giant and Weis gift card sales, the second Monday of the month, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. in the FCC Atrium and 2 - 3 p.m. in the Keystone Room.

ROOSTER WOODSHOP
Congrats to our Elizabethtown Fair winners! Bruce and Pat Schweigert won four first place and one second place ribbon for their creative woodworking entries in this year’s fair. Both are members of Rooster Woodshop. Bruce is renowned for his fine art of wood turnings, and Pat excels with her outstanding scroll saw works of art. You are welcome to stop in to see more of their creations and our entire showroom of other fine projects made by the members of the Rooster Woodshop. We can customize your request.
The showroom is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It is also open on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The shop can also perform minor repairs to furniture upon request.
