American art developed a distinctly realistic character during the mid-19th century, taking its place in the international arts arena. The Civil War, the Industrial Revolution and an increase in the circulation of illustrated newspapers and periodicals provided subject matter and inspiration for artists. Explore the architectural creations of Renwick and Richardson; lithographs, drawings and paintings of Winslow Homer; the art of Thomas Nast; portraits and scenes of American social life by Thomas Eakins; landscapes of Bierstadt; genre paintings of Eastman Johnson; and the intense photographs of Civil War subjects by Matthew Brady and Timothy O’Sullivan, as well as paintings by other Civil War artists. The focus will be on visual creations, and literature and music will be discussed. Handouts will be provided. Professor Cindy Rose, from HACC, will instruct. Call ext. 14509 to register.

Inspired by the words and prayers of a new friend, John trains Hannah for the biggest race of her young life. Rated PG, with a run time of 1 hour, 59 minutes.
9/11 and the Heroes of Flight 93
SATURDAY, SEPT. 11, 2 P.M. Deike Auditorium
Review the events of 9/11 and see the day through the eyes of an air traffic controller who helped shut down the nation’s airspace and dealt with United 93 prior to its crash near Shanksville. Shortly after the Pentagon was hit, Mal Fuller, watch supervisor at Pittsburgh International Airport, evacuated the control tower and radar room when a hijacked plane was headed directly for the airport. The plane was later identified as United 93. When Fuller returned to the radar room to see if there was still a threat to the airport, the aircraft was no longer under radar coverage. Shanksville is eight miles beyond Pittsburgh’s radar range. Little did the nation know, nor understand, what the 40 Heroes of Flight 93 did. Fuller learned air traffic control in the U.S. Air Force and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for 36 years at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and JFK International Airports, as well as Lancaster and Capital City Airports. Mal and his wife, Chris, have lived at Masonic Village since June 2018.
Charlie Zahm Concert SUNDAY, SEPT. 12, 7 P.M. Deike Auditorium

With his beautiful baritone voice, Charlie has become one of the most successful performers on the Celtic festival circuit, weaving magical moments of Scottish and Irish history for the listener and viewer. A master of the guitar as well, Charlie brings an authentic love and respect for the music he sings. With dashes of humor and a light in his eyes, he will draw you into the stories of his songs! Charlie has collected several hundred popular, beautiful and more obscure selections and performs them for thousands of fans up and down the Eastern Seaboard, across America and on cruise ships. Charlie Zahm is one of the few singers in the world to be invited to sing live twice with Scotland's “Black Watch.”

Monday Lecture Series: A Republic of Virtue MONDAYS, SEPT. 13, 20 AND 27; OCT. 4, 11 AND 18, 2:30 P.M. Life Long Learning Center
The founders of our nation wrote our Constitution based on classical republicanism. They also incorporated lessons learned from examples of republics in the old world. What were the political conditions and philosophies in the colonies and in the old world that shaped their thoughts when crafting our particular republic? Why did they declare and fight for independence? What are the similarities and differences between the political tensions then and now? This series of DVD lectures will attempt to answer these and other questions about the formation of our nation. Each session will include time for group discussion. The facilitator is resident Bill Decker. Call ext. 14509 to register for class.

9/11 and the Heroes of Flight 93 Saturday, Sept. 11, 2 p.m. Deike Auditorium Review the events of 9/11 and see the day through the eyes of an air traffic controller who helped shut down the nation’s airspace and dealt with United 93 prior to its crash near Shanksville. Mal and his wife Chris have lived at Masonic Village since June 2018.
