The Joy of Mathematics: Part 2

Professor Arthur Benjamin shows how everything in mathematics is connected; how the beautiful and often imposing edifice that has given us algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability and so much else is based on nothing more than fooling around with numbers.

Lost Art: The Story of Missing Masterpieces

Guided Tour of the Veterans Grove

Knotwork Band

The Knotwork Band is a trio performing Celtic folk music from Ireland, Scotland, England and Brittany, as well as American and world music with ties to Celtic folk music. Like Celtic knotwork, the talents of the band members are interwoven to form each piece of music with a variety of instrumentation: silver flute, high and low whistles, wooden flute and piccolo, guitar, resonator mandolin, hardanger mandolin, banjo mandolin, cittern, bodhráns, bones and vocals.

Buster Keaton: Celebrated Silent Comic Film Actor, Director and Writer

With his deadpan humor and acrobatic talent, Keaton created a world unlike that of other comic stars of the 1920s. Please note: all full-length films and film shorts are silent films with musical soundtracks and text on screen to convey dialogue and plot. We will view five full-length films (60 – 70 minutes).

Based on a true story, London broker Nicholas “Nicky” Winton helps rescue hundreds of predominantly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia in a race against time before the Nazi occupation closes the borders. Fifty years later, he’s still haunted by the fate of those he couldn’t bring to safety. This movie is rated PG with a run time of one hour and 50 minutes.

Take in this uplifting interactive program of “familial” folk, bluegrass, gospel, mountain and coal mine music performed with vocals accompanied by guitar, fiddle and claw-hammer banjo to emulate the coal mining musicians of Northeast Pennsylvania. Jay will sing, fiddle and flat-foot clog-dance simultaneously on a piece of plywood.

President Herbert Hoover: Everything We Learned About Him Was Wrong

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25, 2 P.M.

Internationally celebrated as a humanitarian, Herbert Hoover was considered the most versatile American since Benjamin Franklin. No American President entered office with greater expectations or left with more bitter disappointments.

“Democracy is a harsh employer,” Hoover said. In this presentation, we reconsider Hoover and his contributions to American democracy. Jean-Paul Benowitz teaches history at Elizabethtown College where he is the director of public heritage studies.

Malta Band Concert

Established in 1912 by the Knights of Malta, the Malta Band has been bringing musicians together to engage in and enjoy music and share their love of creating music with the local community. They play a variety of different types of music, from timeless concert band pieces and classic marches to modern composers and popular tunes.

A musical in which a modern day Romeo and Juliet are involved in New York street gangs. On the harsh streets of the upper west side, two gangs battle for control of the turf. Music Merrymakers Concert

Americana and songs of labor that helped shape our country, as well as fun songs, love songs and Gospel tunes, come together for this concert by your peers. The Music Merrymakers will entertain you for an hour of music right before the calendar changes to the melody of autumn. Singing makes the body feel good and warm, brings back a memory and forges new friendships. You’ll recall some of these old songs, while some may be new to you.

Elizabethtown Masonic Village Veterans Club Service, Memories & Friendships

A core group of veterans is working on the final charter and plans to officially start the Elizabethtown Masonic Village Veterans Club (EMVVC). ROOSTER WOODSHOP

Masonic Village Rooster Woodshop is located on the corner of Freemason Drive and Umbaugh Drive. The showroom is open Monday through Friday, from 8 – 11 a.m. and 1 – 3 p.m. It is also open on Saturday, from 8 – 11 a.m. There are many assorted items produced by the members. All items on display are for sale, and all Masonic Village residents and employees receive a 15% discount on a showroom item priced $100 or more. The shop can produce custom furnishings and novel items from wood, and members can also perform minor repairs to furniture upon request. Scan the QR code for a link to our Facebook page.

Walt’s Children’s Puzzles: Walt Cook is our resident children’s puzzle maker. He loves to create colorful, amusing and child safe wooden puzzles. He also specializes in making customized puzzles of a child’s name. These make great gifts to be cherished for a lifetime. May we suggest that these will make great affordable gifts for the young ones in your family. We have many other unique creations for sale in our showroom. Come and visit us if you have a need for a project made from wood.
