SqrFactor Housing for one (National Competition) | individual | 2018 site: unspecified area: 250 sqft brief: to design housing in an area of 250sqft providing shelter to the homeless, and creating a community for their wellness and survival. skills: concept, design and presentation softwares used: sketchup, archicad, photoshop, adobe illustrator, lumion
the problem Budget housing, low cost housing, slum redevelopment plans, all these have been undertaken repeatedly over the past years. Yet have failed to work! Reason being the ignorance towards making these places liveable. 1) Vertical housing that grows in rows- poor light and ventilation 2) 200-250 sqft houses barely provide for living, no space for workfront. 3) no individual character of housing . The aim of this project is to provide housing to low income group in a condition that feels like HOME to THEM.

PORTABILITY modular unit: can be placed across the horizontal plane or stacked vertically. ECONOMIC-OPPERTUNITY ground floor provides workspace for each house hold
TRANSFORMABILITY balconies extend out from window openings
PRIVACY partitions provided using curtains hooked at ends USABILITY OF SPACE the wash basin collapses to form bathing area; eliminating the cost of additional plumbing
view from drawing room
the community The proposed design for community is one of the many arrangements possible with the module created. Each module is vertically stacked in groups of 3 with workshops on ground floor. The stacking is slightly staggered to give each house character and individuality. Each of these houses hence have windows on all sides and good quality of light and ventilation.
arrangement of modules
These are further arranged in groups of 6 in a hexagonal (molecular structure - known for its molecular packing efficiency) with a courtyard in the middle. Trees shadow the parking available on all sides of the building block. The entrance from below the stairs creates avenues and interesting spaces. A community requires to be closeknit and at the same time have breathing spaces.

site: sector 16, Chandigarh brief: to design a kindergarten school for a capacity of 80 children, a space with enough flexibility and control, for the children to explore, learn and grow skills: concept development, design representatin softwares used: hand sketches, autocad, archicad, lumion, photoshop, adobe illustrator

ground floor
Keeping these in mind as objectives of design, the kindergarten for kids aging 3-6 years is planned. It requires classrooms, staff rooms, indoor and outdoor activities, and most importantly interactive and interesting spaces.

A foam pit with rope climbers connected to the first floors.
In today’s age, where learning and growth of a child’s mind is of utmost importance to the parents, the school needs proper infrastructure and provision for co-curricular activities to spark excellence of the infant mind and generate interest in varied fields. At the same time, the safety of the tiny tots is as important an aspect for schooling.
Furniture is scaled down to be fit for use by children.
To provide a comfortable and adventurous environment for these kids in a moderate climate like that of Chandigarh, the plan works around an open courtyard. The windows of the classroom face north, bringing in adequate glare-free light.
The stairs are coloured and numbered to encourage learning in all ways.
Colourful circular cutouts in the wall, generate interest and create interaction spaces for the kid and integration with environment. Use of colours in edges and furniture with white walls, makes the space delightful yet not overwhelming. The wall acts as a canvas for the kids and their imagination, by providing surfaces than can be wiped clean.
A shallow swimming pool lets the children enjoy, safely.

Liminal-
a transition, a phase, an ‘in-between’. It is what comes amidst two positions, choices or ideas. It is a constitution of facets both physical and temporal. If we were to say a physical place could influence and lure our mind to a temporal state, where the physicality of a place sparks a liminality in our brain, a place that comes to mind…..PRISON. In the prison, the liminality becomes the phase of a criminal’s prison sentence, a pivotal point leading them to either redemption or destruction.
But what needs focus is “What makes them criminals?” Is it poverty? Peer pressure? Hunger? Or a series of ghastly and devastating experiences? These experiences go on to become a part of the person’s being, hardening the negativity to the core.

plan
Owing to the impressionable minds of adolescent criminals, it is easier to influence them, hence, the site chosen JUVENILE WELFARE HOME.
We propose a DOG DAY CARE CENTER in Juvenile homes, a facility where inmates take care of dogs that come to the dog day care center. An amalgamation of two such varying facilities will provide the much needed dynamism to the monotonous grey walls of the Juvenile homes. Dogs are scientifically proven to induce happiness in human beings and thus improve their mental health by giving them a distraction from the past and the worry of a future that is unknown. Hence, transforming and reinventing what these places really mean to the inmates as well as to the society, reaffirming their trust in these children and providing a sense of belonging in the minds of the juveniles. Moreover, taking care of another living being instills in them a sense of responsibility and maturity.
We wish for these children to realize what they possess - compassion, love, responsibility and most of all their childhood. We aspire to bring about a change not just in the surroundings of these children, but to make them see who ‘they’ really can be. To give shape to our program, we decided to use squares (40x40cm) to produce a design that is multifunctional. These modules will be made in a row of 5 squares and at each hinge, it can be locked at any position or angle, forming activity-tracks and seating to promote interaction between dogs and inmates. Mural design and painting (volunteer work) | group | 2019 site: juvenile welfare home, sector 25, Chandigarh skills: design and implementation of mural
To give new wings to our ANDC design proposal, we volunteered to make the common spaces inside the Juvenile Welfare Home more lively by creating murals and meaningful paintings. We started with a 18ft x 10ft mural on the central courtyard wall. Our aim was to bring colour onto the monotonous walls of the Juvenile Welfare home and also into the lives of the children who had taken a dark path in life. The particular wall was chosen because it is visible to the children from their rooms, the mess and the library of the juvenile home campus. Our design aims to instill in the children a hope and love for the world outside, urging them to drop their dark covers(symbolised by the umbrella) and bathe in the colours and wonders of the world (symbolised by rain- each colour representing values of love, honesty, trust and respect). We hope to resurrect these souls and bring them back to a world of good, using art as a medium for change.
