WELCOME

Hello... ...and Happy New Year to you from everyone here at ASC. We trust that you all had a fabulous time over the holidays and that your batteries are still well and truly recharged as we race into 2010. Angie Parkins kicks off this issue’s cardmaking with a romantic array of love-themed cards for you to make and send, starting on page 10. Whether you are celebrating a wedding or an anniversary, a birthday or even Valentine’s Day, Angie’s versatile and contemporary styling makes her creations suitable for all. Following the fantastic response to her article in issue 21, Tina McOnegal is back by popular demand with more cards inspired by Spellbinders on page 21. Here she offers advice on making the most of your dies, and shows how even very basic shapes can be used to create a unique design. Lindsey Hopkins takes inspiration from across the pond with her card collection on page 38 as she showcases the treasures on offer from cardmakers’ favourites American Crafts and, not to be outdone, Hunkydory takes centre stage on page 54 with an eclectic array of sophisticated feminine designs. Debi Potter incorporates hidden elements into her cardmaking this issue with a wonderful selection of pop-up cards. Simple in design but exquisite in their detail, Debi’s cards are sure to delight anyone who receives them. Judith Hannington is going digital on page 59 as she lifts the lid on hybrid cardmaking and downloadable craft stash. As a self-confessed technophobe I have shied away from all things computer-generated up until now, but having read Judith’s novice-friendly ‘how to’ guide, I am definitely going to give it a go. With all of this and much more besides, including a fabulous guide to elegant embossing on page 72 and a wedding invitation extravaganza on page 30, I think I will leave you to it. See you next time Editor diane.grimshaw@practicalpublishing.com.au

SEASONAL with love

ANGIE PARKINS Designer

‘ Love actually A contemporary colour scheme combined with a traditional design worked really well for these cards

Whether you are sending a Valentine, celebrating an anniversary or wedding, or simply saying ‘I love you’, Angie Parkins has all areas covered with her stunning designs

WOODEN HEART

LOVE YOU LOADS

This is simple but striking and the bold design and colours give it a great masculine feel

We love the use of hemp here – its rough, frayed texture and natural shade are perfect

TWO HEARTS AS ONE

CLASSY HEART

Using a double knot instead of a bow in ribbon keeps it from looking at all girly

This design works best with a strong shape like a heart that reveals just enough background

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

EASEL CARD

This is an ideal way to present tickets, vouchers or other love tokens you are giving as a gift

We love the choice of an embellished button as the ‘stopper’ for the easel element

C

reating the perfect romantic card is easier than you think and it doesn’t have to cost the earth. A few bold accents and well placed sentiments are all that’s needed to pass on your loving messages, and I’ll bet you can find everything you want already at home in your stash! The homespun style is always a popular choice and, what’s more, it’s great for creating cards for both men and women. Homespun projects incorporate a warmth into your cards through the materials you use, so natural browns such as kraft cardstock and parcel string are a great choice.

KRAFT WORK Kraft cardstock is all the rage at the moment

10

www.australiansimplycards.com.au

and, because it is so versatile, it will continue to be so well into 2010. Kraft cardstock co-ordinates perfectly with any colour, which makes it a cardmaker’s dream, and it has the added advantage of not being as harsh as its white counterpart. Another beauty of kraft cardstock is that even with ‘white space’ a card doesn’t look sparse, so you can keep your creations clean and contemporary in design without feeling like you’ve left unsightly space, thanks to the warmth of the colour.

TRUE COLOURS When you go into a store to buy a wedding or anniversary card you are often greeted by a sea of red, pink and purple offerings with barely a hint of anything else, but you

shouldn’t feel restricted to these colours. Any colour can be adapted to your needs, whatever the occasion, and romantic cards are no different. Picking one traditional and a selection of non-traditional colours can make all the difference when crafting for both sexes, and sometimes it’s good to jump out of the box and dive head first into non-traditional colours! The resounding theme for love and romance, whatever the colour scheme, is the trusty heart. This instantly makes us think of love, romance, togetherness and companionship, so including a heart on your projects helps set the theme from the start – and the shades of cardstock, ribbon and any other embellishments you use will jump in line and fall into place. ■
