EDITORS NOTE Here is the second issue of PRACTICE. Magazine but, first, I want to thank all of those who contributed to or viewed the first issue. Especially, those that shared and told a friend about PRACTICE. Magazine. After you flip all the way through this issue, be sure to check us out on instgram @ practice._mag. You'll find extra images from the spreads in this issue and early images from the fall issue. While you're there, feel free to submit your work or a suggestion in the DMs. You can also submit by email at practicemagazine19@gmail.com. You'll also find bonus photos from the spreads on my instagram @mcraephotos. The inspirational topic for this issue is health & wellness. One of the featured artist stated that without your health there's not much you can do. I understood this while working on this issue and handling my own wellness. During this process, I also began to undertand that a healthy state of well being is not a character trait. It is not a milestone that someone can achieve once and be finished. It's a continuous process that begins again every morning. Like with anything, health and wellness must be practiced and improved everyday. In this issue, you will see creatives that work hard on their craft daily. However, you'll also see humans that have to work hard on their well being daily. You will find that we're all not that different and we're all advancing towards the same goals. Why not advance together? PRACTICE. Magazine Editor-in-Chief Isaiah McRae

Maintaining health and wellness is an important factor in living a higher quality of life. According to the World Health Organization, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” However, The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as "a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential." Participating in activities to maintain a positive state of wellness in turn contributes to good overall health. Wellness is commonly broken down into the Eight Dimensions of Wellness. The Eight Dimensions of Wellness includes emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual. By breaking wellness into 8 different categories we can easily identify which area of wellness could use more attention. Emotional Wellness – Refers to having healthy coping mechanisms to stress. As well as, understanding your own emotions to reduce any stressors that would create an unhealthy mentality. Environmental Wellness – Refers to receiving optimal health by creating a supportive, and clean surrounding environment. Living in a harmonious environment can look like having a clean room, or reducing clutter in a work/study space. Financial Wellness – Refers to managing money in order to create satisfaction in future and current situations. Financial troubles can indirectly influence our anxiety causing negative ripples to other areas of our lives. Intellectual Wellness – Refers to participating in intellectually stimulating activities to produce healthy results in our brain. Expanding our skill set and learning new ideas that are of interest is a constructive way to improve wellness. Occupational Wellness – Refers to gratification one finds in their work. Physical Wellness – Refers to detecting the need for exercise, nutritious foods, and sleep. Recognizing the need to seek medical attention for potential illnesses also plays a role in physical health. Social Wellness – Refers to creating a support system, and building a connection to create a sense of belonging. Being a part of a community no matter how big or small gives us comfort.
Spiritual Wellness – Refers to maintaining a set of values and beliefs that feel purposeful. Spiritual wellness regardless of religious dominations can allow us to cope with everyday life. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not always simple. Being healthy requires effort every single day. Wellness involves complete honesty to oneself in order to be aware of the dimensions of one’s life that could use improvement. Having a healthy mind, and body demands more than just getting enough water, and sleep. Health and wellness involve self-learning, self-understanding, and self-improvement. In order to reach our full potential, we must find balance in every area of wellness. It is acceptable to be in a state of not being able to preserve every dimension, and we are under no obligation or timeline to be healthy. Nevertheless, being actively aware of our state of well being and health can always be obtained. Never give up, or lose hope. Have patience, and be kind to yourself. Wellness is more than just being free from illness, it is also self care!
How do you practice health and wellness?
Patrick Maarice I meditate but not in a way that others meditate as in sitting and clearing my mind. Any free time I have I use to focus on the positive things and getting positive things done in that time. I’ll turn the radio off and plan out what I have to get done. I’ll meditate on getting positive things done in my life. As far as physically, I also use any free time, even if its just twenty minutes. I’ll do pushups and once I get started as might as well try to fit in pull ups throughout the day. PRACTICE. MAGAZINE
