RESTORING THE NEIGHBOR BACK TO THE ‘HOOD PLEDGE “I pledge allegiance to do my part in Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood. I pledge to develop myself, my family and my household to the greatest extent possible by being a shining example of a husband, father, son, brotha, wife, mother, daughter and sister in my neighborhood. I will learn all that I can in order to give my best to improve the quality of my neighborhood. I will work diligently to honor my family in my neighborhood with good deeds and treat my neighbors as my extended family. I will keep myself mentally sound, spiritually grounded and physically fit; building a strong body, mind and spirit that will exemplify positivity and productivity in my neighborhood. I will unselfishly share my time, knowledge, resources and wisdom with my neighbors (young and old) in order to build and maintain a healthy neighborhood. I will do my part to keep my neighborhood clean and safe. I will discipline myself to direct my energies thoughtfully and constructively to maintain peace, harmony and love in my neighborhood. I will train myself to never hurt or allow anyone to harm someone in my neighborhood for an unjust cause or through negative behaviors of stealing, gun violence, verbal abuse, police brutality, selling drugs, rape or any other social ills that work to destroy my neighborhood. This is my pledge to do my part by being a caring neighbor in my neighborhood by working to keep my neighborhood a peace zone instead of a war zone.”

Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood / Introduction

Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood is an initiative led by local community organizer and activist, Yusef Bunchy Shakur, who grew up on Ferry Park Street in the center of the neighborhood that was once called Northwest Goldberg, but which is known in the community as Zone 8. Gangs, crime and drugs became common in Zone 8 because of the social, economical and educational neglect by the powers that be and as a result it was reduced from a neighborhood to a ‘hood. It is the influence of these foul social conditions that 8

Yusef cites as the source of his wild and untamed behavior, which eventually led to his imprisonment at age 19 for a crime he did not commit. While in prison, Yusef met his father for the first time. Yes, he had met this man before, he had seen this man on and off growing up - but it was in prison that he first met this man as his father. The relationship that formed between Yusef and his father in prison was a pivotal experience, one which put Yusef on his path to redemption. His father inspired him to redeem his life, encouraging Yusef

PS03 _ RESTORING THE NEIGHBOR BACK TO THE ‘HOOD

to spend his incarceration productively. He kept mostly to himself and read ceaselessly - pouring through the philosophical and revolutionary texts of Black freedom fighters. Yusef was released with a mission - a new purpose - to rebuild his community into something it deserves to be. While in prison, Yusef developed skills for motivational speaking and organizing, and by 2008 he had established himself as a motivational speaker, author and organizer, touring the country spreading his message of hope, redemption

and transformation - a constant advocate for the oppressed. He has written four books and produced a documentary released through his company, Urban Guerilla Publishing.

and utilize their skill sets through workshops and other training.

On a mission to transform an abandoned house on Ferry Park Street into a home for the community, the Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood Training Center will operate as a neighborhood center seeking to improve the social and educational skill level of the community.

The Training Center will provide programming to support community interests, literacy, and essential needs. The Training Center will be a safe place to gain access to computers and job information. It will be a safe place for community members to express themselves through song or poetry, and for nurturing and development of artists, writers and leaders.

The house will be a place to nurture the community, as a group and individuals alike,to help people hone

The Training Center will establish a model for other communities across the country to adopt and

create centers of hope that become the anchor of their communities by meeting the needs of their residents.

“The house

will be a place to nurture the community and its members.”

NORTHWEST GOLDBERG NEIGHBORHOOD (ZOnE8)

Once a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, Northwest Goldberg transitioned to become predominantly Black, and by 1955 was home to King Solomon Baptist Church, Detroit’s first Black church to be located on a major street and eventual site for Malcom X’s 1963 “Message to the Grassroots” speech. 12

Other important cultural institutions such as White’s Records, Soul Day (the first organized festival in Michigan) and Motown Records. All of these historic sites are just down the street from 2431 Ferry Park.

Neighborhood Context & Precedents/ Neighborhood Timeline

“I look at the blight, abandoned buidlings and empty lots in Detroit neighborhoods as a direct result of misappropriated funds, political/ religious/community activits/non-profit corruption and a lack of vision by those who so desperately want to lead this city and its residents. The more than three decades’ worth of abandoned buildings still standing in Detroit neighborhoods is an ironic metaphor for the heart of this great city, which continues to fight for survival after having been left to create beauty out of some ugly shit!”

Neighborhood Context & Precedents / Urban Network

The Urban Network Book Store In 2009 the Urban Network Book store opened off Grand River Avenue, just south of W. Grand Boulevard. The Urban Network was the first iteration of many of the programs set to launch at the Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood Training Center. The Story: Yusef “Bunchy” Shakur was the motor that drove the vision of this institution, which he founded with three other formerly incarcerated men. He recruited these brothers to support a mission to offer something positive and productive in the neighborhood that he had once taken pride in destroying. As Yusef has stated many times, “When I went to book stores to ask them to carry my book, they told me no! So, I said fuck them and opened up my own book store!” Originally operating as a book store, weekly “Rap Battles” allowed young Black males to escape the 16

dangers of the streets, to hone their skills in a nurturing environment that challenged them to see themselves as more than street thugs. The Urban Network quickly became an anchor for the community that people took pride in– here they were not looked down on but regarded and treated as equals. After struggling to meet the bills, Shakur was offered a $20,000 dollar grant that he invested in the Urban Network, transforming it into the “Urban Network Cyber Café”. Adding a café, commercial kitchen and recording studio, the Urban Network then operated on a financially sustainable

PS03 _ RESTORING THE NEIGHBOR BACK TO THE ‘HOOD

model. It became what is right about development in Detroit - a financially sound operation cemented at the ground level in a neighborhood that has been rejected socially and economically, striving to make a difference. In 2013, after a new owner purchased the building, the Urban Network was forced to close. For four years it met the needs of the people who live there, providing them with resources and programs that fostered concrete hope, as well welcoming people from all over to participate in the mission of Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood!

Homeboy Industries Homeboy Industries “serves high-risk, formerly gangrelated men and women with a continuum of free services and programs, and operated several social enterprises that serve as jobtraining sites.” Based in Los Angeles, CA, Homeboy Industries provides an example of community development whose primary goal is social good, but which is also able to support itself without dependence on philanthropic institutions.

Boggs Center Located on Detroit’s east side, the Boggs Center is a crucial precedent for RTNBH. This house is incredibly important to the history of the Black liberation movement in Detroit, as well as around the country, and has stood as a distinct landmark in the community of activists, authors, and leaders. The Boggs Center serves the community in many ways, one of which is by creating a safe space to have difficult conversations surrounding race, inequality, and respiriting human beings.

Rural Studio Established in 1993 by Sambo Mockbee at Auburn University in Alabama, Rural Studio is a unique form of architectural education. Students gain an in-depth knowledge of building systems, pragmatic solutions, and the real world effects of design decisions by designing and then building homes for members of Hale County’s underserved population. Working with a maximum of $20,000 for each house, students must also explore innovative uses of materials in order to avoid exceeding the budget. PS03 _ RESTORING THE NEIGHBOR BACK TO THE ‘HOOD

COMMUNITY & BUSINESS PROGRAMS / Community Service Programs

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS

At the heart of the RTNBH Training Center will be the community and business programs. These programs will go hand in hand— the support of individuals in the many different business programs that will be housed in the RTNBH Training Center will provide 24

the direct funding to execute many of the different programs that are designed to meet the needs of the people. The community programs will educate people regarding the importance of nurturing our human capital, and the business programs will

PS03 _ RESTORING THE NEIGHBOR BACK TO THE ‘HOOD

exist to allow people to use capital to invest in practical programs. Both programs will allow people to play a role in the mission of human and community development through RESTORING THE NEIGHBOR BACK TO THE ‘HOOD.

BACKPACK GIVEAWAY The Backpack Giveaway is an annual event to foster hope and love through a neighborhood block party. Featured at this block party is live music, food, games and entertainment for families, and a giveaway of backpacks filled with school supplies for each child. The Backpack Giveaway has become a much anticipated event and over eight years has distributed over 4,000 backpacks.

FEED THE PEOPLE

Feeding the people events is part of the People’s Survival Program that will take place monthly. It isn’t about feeding the homeless, but rather feeding anyone a hot cooked meal. We invite people from the community to cook different meals and come together as one community to break bread. After operating monthly for a time, Feed the People will eventually become a weekly program.

CLOTHING DRIVE The clothing drive also works in conjunction with The People’s Survival Program. This program allows people to distribute new and gently worn clothing with other people in the community. The house will become a location for clothing drop offs. As with Feed the People, this will begin as a monthly program, and eventually become a weekly program.

COMPUTER LAB The computer lab will allow people in the community free access to computers. Not only will they have access, but will also have the option of taking classes supported by our neighborhood partners to learn how to utilize computer programs and the internet. At RTNBH, young people can use the computers for homework, adults can use them for career advancement.

General Baker was a natural educator and leader. Baker was an organic intellectual who read voluminously, and was an excellent historian with a keen interest in the history of workers and black radicalism. As a speaker, he had a way with an audience that was a sight to behold: once you witnessed it, it became immediately clear how he remained such an effective labor and community organizer and propagandist since the 1960s.

His power as a leader and speaker came from his undying commitment to - and love for - those who catch the most hell under capitalism. His fearlessness, earnestness, and unwavering commitment to this cause moved people in ways that is rarely seen. General had spoken on the topics of revolution, historical materialism, bearing guns, and confronting police in front of largely hostile, predominantly conservative 44

Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was an American bondwoman who escaped from slavery in the South to become a leading abolitionist before the American Civil War. She was born in Maryland in 1820, and successfully escaped in 1849. Yet she returned many times to rescue both family members and non-relatives from the plantation system. She led hundreds to freedom in the North as the most famous “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, an elaborate secret network of safe houses organized for that purpose. Tubman made use of the network known as the Underground Railroad to travel nearly 90 miles to Philadelphia. She crossed into the free state of Pennsylvania with a feeling of relief and awe, and recalled later: “When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven.” 46

The “Hall of Sacrifice” is not to only remind us of their significance, but that it is on their shoulders we must stand and that each generation has the obligation to continue to fight for freedom for Black people. Freedom is an idea that can’t be murdered and it is re-born in each Black person that awakens from his or her oppression, and freedom can’t be achieved without sacrifice. The “Hall of Sacrifice” will be a history timeline to guide, educate and inspire us to be like our Afrikan Ancestors FREEDOM FIGHTERS!

NEIGHBORS & PARTNERS / Community Members

Neighborhood Residents In a neighborhood where there is a scarcity of places to gather, to share a meal with a friend, to attend a performance, to meet a politician, or just to sit and read a book, now there will be RTNBH, that will provide a space for gathering, expression, and education. RTNBH is committed to serving the members of the neighborhood and will be a space for people to gather for a meal, receive training, and be empowered as individuals.

52

Programs and events at the house will cater to neighbors of all ages, including activities for kids, training for youth, and skill workshops for adults. Whether someone is coming to eat at the weekly fish fry, to stop in and read a book, to use the computer, or to get help on a piece of writing, the house will be there to cater to the community’s needs. Walking distance from bus stops on West Grand Blvd., and Grand River, and also within walking distance from Northwest High School and several churches, RTNBH is will be a destination for the community throughout the day.

Boots on the Ground The “boots on the ground” mentality is a strong theme at RTNBH. Developing and nurturing leadership in everything that is done at the house. With many already scheduled weekly and monthly community service events, volunteers at RTNBH will help to make sure these programs and events run smoothly, and will allow members of the surrounding communities a chance to participate and become familiar with the neighborhood.

Community partners will be encouraged to host classes, workshops, and also to facilitate conversations that will be free and open to the public. These will include computer literacy workshops, writing classes, or helping with larger events such at the annual Backpack Giveaway.

In the past, various groups of students, visiting distinguished peoples, and casual travelers have spent time at RTNBH, helping out activities and programs, and getting a chance to meet the neighbors.

Authors & Performers

Local and visiting artists and activists will be sure to make RTNBH a destination.

RTNBH is dedicated to providing a space for local artists and activists to preform. Inside of the house will be a stage for small audiences, for poets, solo musicians, or authors to come and preform, and for events to happen in all seasons. An outdoor stage and deck will accommodate large groups, bands, and speakers. RTNBH will be a place where anyone can preform, and will host weekly events such as poetry slams and open mics. 54

house while they visit, and also to attend the activities and events while they stay in the house.

Allies and guests will come to RTNBH to help support the mission and work. RTNBH hopes to be a blueprint for other communities looking to establish a space for gatherings, performances, As RTNBH gains national and international recognition, the house will be open to visitors looking to experience a Detroit other than just seeing downtown. Out-of-towners will be welcomed to stay in the PS03 _ RESTORING THE NEIGHBOR BACK TO THE ‘HOOD

55

NEIGHBORS & PARTNERS / Community Members

Mentors & Giants Elders, mentors, and teachers are encouraged to provide a space to share wisdom and knowledge and in a practical way. Although RTNBH is dedicated to serving the local community, the house is open to the entire Detroit community. Detroiters will be welcome to come to the house to have a meal, find a book, attend any preformances, or to host their own event or workshop.

The Team

“I will unselfishly share my time, knowledge, resources and wisdom with my neighbors (young & old) in order to build & maintain a healthy neighborhood. I will do my part to keep my neighborhood clean and safe.

58

“It’s been challenging, but their enthusiasm, questions, skills and willing to get dirty has been a welcome addition!” —YBS

“I was skeptical at first of the potential to develop a consistent customer base for the business programs. But after ten minutes sitting on the porch with Yusef, seeing people drive by honking or walking up to as for advice, I knew it wouldn’t be a problem” —CSW

“Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood has confirmed my original desire to move to Detroit, to understand how communities work together towards resiliance. Working beside Yusef and watching how he connects with his community, and empowers his community, has been moving to say the least.” —MAD

“Working with Yusef and learning more about Zone 8 has reassured my belief in Detroits revival through a coupling of empathy and smart design.” —RPL

“The combination of social goals, self-sustaining business structure, and established relationship to the community made this an incredibly exciting project to work on, and a fascinating intersection of organizational structure and architecture. I look forward to supporting the work of Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood.” —JBS

WORK TO DATE / Progress

Progress Since first walking into 2431 Ferry Park Ave, Yusef has taken considerable steps towards the stabilization and renovation of the house, making significant progress towards the realization of the Training Center. What once stood on the block as just another derelict structure dotting Detroit’s wide-streching landscape is now adopting a new role as an anchor within the immediate community and establishing itself as a model of resilience and resistance to the complacency which 66

once filled this city. Despite a limited budget, the team has been able to take action through the support of other fighters and advocates for the movement. Volunteers have gathered throughout the summer to participate in the first modifications to the house. Sweat, laughs and a growing sense of community are laying the foundation for an institution of hope, which will well serve and meet the needs of this community.

APPENDIX / Acknowledgments

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In January of 2014 I decided to launch the GoFundMe Campaign to ask people for help through donations. It was my first time doing something like this, and it was real uncomfortable to ask but I realize that the work of Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ‘Hood is not the job of one man or woman but the job of many. To my surprise, many people locally and nationally stepped up to support the cause. I put a call out for $20,000 and as of today we’ve raised over $6,000, and also many of the same donors donated to this year’s annual backpack giveaway. So whatever good that comes out of our neighborhoods will be a direct result of the good we invest into our neighborhoods. Thank you to all that donated, no matter how big or small!
