BEST BAGEL MOE’S BROADWAY BAGEL 2650 Broadway, Boulder • 303.444.3252 3075 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder • 303.442.4427 www.moesbroadwaybagel.com
“What makes Moe’s special is that it offers great products in a friendly atmosphere,” says Steve Pagnotta, general manager. “Customers appreciate our quality and freshness. Everything is made fresh. We bake bagels at least every 20 minutes, the pizza and pastries are made from scratch, subs and sandwiches are made fresh and to order. And everything is made according to the old-school, New York-style.” Of course, the old school didn’t know about Moe’s jalapeño, cranberry-walnut or tomato-cheddar bagels, or thin-crust pineapple or artichoke pizza. No chain store, Moe’s is still a mom-and-pop operation, founded almost 15 years ago by Patty and John Sherman. “This is their community; they live and work here. They and their families are hands-on,” Pagnotta says. More sandwich and sub roll menus, pastries and fruit salads are coming in the fall.
BEST BAKERY BREADWORKS CAFE
2644 Broadway, Boulder • 303.444.5667
When customers come into Breadworks and ask, “What’s new?” they mean it literally. Something new is always in the works. Recent expansion doubled the size of the cafe. A new wood-burning pizza oven turns out Tuscan-style crispy pizzas. There’s now a line of hot foods and grilled sandwiches, as well as fresh-tossed salads. Breakfast at Breadworks is elaborate, with such hearty foods as frittatas, French toast made with challah or brioche, and polenta or red-flannel hash. You can also find freshly spun gelato (try lavender with caramel) and sorbet (pomegranate is original). Owner Larry Domnitz credits executive chef Colleen Doran and Lola Sarur, her top assistant, for introducing so many new dishes. He explains Breadworks’ success: “We are fanatical about quality. Everything that we serve is as good as we can make it. We’ve built up a reputation over the last 11-1/2 years. We add things that are of interest to our customers and staff. Everything is fresh. We use top-quality ingredients.”

Did you know that Vic’s first opened in Boulder way back in 1992? The store at 2680 Broadway is the original. General manager Justin Hartman says, “We’re grateful for the local, loyal support for Vic’s all these years.” No doubt that Vic’s is a big hit. Another branch just opened at 1800 Broadway, and as we go to press CU students will be lining up on campus at the Atlas Building for their caffeine fix. “We pride ourselves on friendly, fast service,” says Hartman. Vic’s is also proud that those who prepare espresso drinks are highly qualified, trained baristas. Sweet accompaniments come fresh from local bakeries: Brillig’s muffins, Spruce Confections’ scones, cookies and croissants; and Family Bakery’s cinnamon rolls, poppy seed rolls and caramel nut rolls. Vic’s also serves soups and sandwiches in some of its shops.

KT’S BARBECUE
KT’s formula for success is simple, according to manager Chase Pravlik: It serves consistently good barbecue in a friendly atmosphere. Expect tasty, tender meats and homemade fixings like garlic mashed potatoes, hearty beans, key lime pie and brownies. You can spice up your beef, pork, chicken, sausage or ribs with KT’s Texas sweet mild sauce, a Memphis tangy vinegarpepper variety, or Double Diamond straight hot sauce. KT’s has a loyal following of customers. “One guy comes in every night, others three times a week.” The low staff turnover translates to friendly service. “The staff has been here for three to five years,” Pravlik says. “They don’t leave ’til they’re done with college. It’s a fun place to work; we have good customers.” RUNNER UP: THUNDERBIRD BURGERS & BBQ

Bewitching steam rising from a bowl of hot and spicy soup. Savoring the tang of fivespice chicken. Rice noodles, lettuce, cucumbers, bean sprouts and grilled shrimp entwined, topped with peanuts and accented with nuoc mam sauce. Relishing the complex flavors of sesame tofu. These are the delights that await you at Chez Thuy. Serving authentic Vietnamese cuisine since 1993, Chez Thuy has been a local favorite from day one. Meat lovers and vegetarians alike have a wide selection of entrees from which to choose. And kids can’t get enough of the skewer combination plate created just for them. “We get lots of compliments. BEST BAR RHUMBA
BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT
950 Pearl St., Boulder • 303.442.7771 • www.rhumbarestaurant.com
Rhumba is a feast for all the senses. General manager Mike Henderson says of Rhumba, “It’s totally unique. There’s nothing like it in Boulder or any other major land-locked city. It’s like being on the islands. We have killer-unique food, with something that appeals to everyone. It is hands-down the best patio in town. People just sit and watch the scene with a mojito and a Cuban sandwich.” This delicacy from the island 90 miles from Miami is stuffed with pressed pork, pickles, jack cheese, ham and molten mustard aioli. Cuba and Jamaica are major themes – note the pictures of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro – but you could be on any Caribbean island. “We’ve established a reputation for the bar,” Henderson says. “We take the lead in cocktails, which are creative, using fresh, high-quality ingredients. We even involve our chefs in developing drinks.” The place heats up on Sunday afternoons with live music – and the can’t-sit-still rhythms of salsa and samba dancing.
ORCHID PAVILION
1050 Walnut St., Boulder • 303.449.4353 • www.orchidpavilion.com
Twenty years after taking over as chef, and seven years after assuming ownership, Kenneth Leong is still doing the cooking himself. “I keep the food consistent,” he says. “I always use fresh vegetables, fresh meat and seafood.” He cooks in several regional Chinese styles – Mandarin, Cantonese and Szechuan – serving up such popular dishes as sesame chicken, cashew chicken, honey roast duck and Peking duck. He also offers traditional Chinese banquet dinners, beloved by gourmet diners; the meal starts with cold appetizers followed by soup, duck, and five or six maincourse dishes not on the restaurant’s menu.

BEST HAPPY HOUR & BEST OUTDOOR DINING & BEST APPETIZERS & BEST AFTER-WORK GATHERING SPOT MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT (THE MED) 1002 Walnut St., Boulder • 303.444.5335 www.themedboulder.com
After 14 years in business, the Med is doing more than something right – they’re doing everything right. Winning four different categories is a testament to the restaurant that manager Jason Berger describes as “casual, upbeat and fun.” Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. and includes half off all tapas; margarita pizzas for $3.50; and a dollar off house red and white wine, well mixed drinks, red and white sangria and draft beer. If you’re in the mood for something swankier, try the Buffalo Margarita, made by mixing Petrone Silver, Cointreau, fresh lime juice and a splash of orange juice, and then shaken. Hard. Another favorite is the Pomtini, made with Pearl pomegranate vodka and a splash of Chambourd. Enjoy these refreshments on the newly remodeled patio, featuring a new fountain and mosaic, designed in a classic Mediterranean fashion and riddled with flowers. Once you’re settled in, take some time to peruse the 40 different appetizers. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by deliciousness, try one of the favorites: grilled skirt steak with olive oil and bleu cheese crumbles; grilled, marinated lamb brochettes; or caprese with fresh, homemade mozzarella. Berger adds, “Generally people say we have the best fried calamari in town.” Given the fabulous patio; the wealth of unique and authentic appetizers and the stellar happy hour, how could the Med NOT be the best after-work gathering spot in town? But don’t worry – the Med is known for taking very large parties, serving groups between 20 and 50 every night. And it doesn’t hurt that their prices accommodate all sizes of wallets. Here’s the skinny on Tom’s hamburgers: They’re not humongous, or grilled with mesquite or anything like that. They’re just 5 and 1/3 ounces (three patties to the pound) of Coleman’s 85-percentlean natural beef cooked the way you like ’em and served on a bun. Order the basic plain burger, a cheeseburger or a bacon-cheese (owner Tom Eldridge’s favorite), or a chili burger topped with Tom’s own red chili. The old-fashioned fixings apply: lettuce, tomato and onion, french fries (cooked in heartsaving canola oil), and your pick of potato salad, macaroni salad or cole slaw. Watching your carbs? Order the low-cal plate with patty sans bun, plus cottage cheese and fruit salad. Eldridge has been in business 45 years and credits wonderful employees and clientele for his success. “Now,” he says, “I help my son Dan run the place.” The place is a Boulder institution. New Yorkers can tell that the ambience at Salvaggio’s is that of a typical Lower East Side deli. It prides itself on high-quality, freshly made foods, fair prices and quick service. General manager Nick Middlebrooks says, “We have a good balance of new and regular customers. GLACIER HOME MADE ICE CREAM
Asked why Glacier Home Made Ice Cream is so popular, manager Kathy Giansiracusa explains, “We’re a small company that started in Boulder, we try to bring the Boulder atmosphere into each of our stores and we tailor our ice cream to [the tastes of ] our customers.” Those tastes vary from Black Raspberry Chocolate Melt to the new cherry-lime gelato. (Customized ice-cream cakes can be pre-ordered.) The newest shop on Baseline Road features a coffee bar and free wireless Internet, making it a great place to hang out. “We make every single product inside our store, we have our own machines, so [the different flavors] are freshly made every day.” Clearly the people at Glacier aren’t afraid to play with their food. SUNFLOWER
Sunflower isn’t a strictly vegetarian restaurant. It just happens to do vegetarian better than anyone else. “Our vegetarian meals are not an afterthought, they’re by design,” says owner and executive chef Jon Pell, who has been cooking natural foods for 30 years. Take the barbecue seitan, for example, which is grilled with orange-maple barbecue sauce and served with a dilled baby red potato salad, grilled organic corn on the cob and carrot-fennel slaw. This is not your typical veggie fare. “We prepare really good, balanced meals for vegetarians, with lots of protein,” adds Pell. Sunflower cuisine is 95 percent organic, the ingredients are locally grown as seasons permit, the wine list includes more than 40 organic or biodynamic wines, vegetarian selections are made entirely without animal products and every meal is prepared in aluminum-free cookware. The food at Sunflower is created first and foremost with your health in mind. “I’m not doing this because it’s a fad,” emphasizes Pell. “I’m doing this because I believe in it.” And guess what? It just happens to be delicious. RUNNER UP: LEAF VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT

“The chili rellenos are really, really popular,” explains Juanita’s manager, Jessica Durham. If you’re not feeling chili, the fish tacos or the burrito deluxe are sure to warm your belly, especially if they’ve got the calabacitas vegetable mix. Featuring over a hundred different kinds of tequila, Juanita’s takes its Mexican roots seriously. Recently, the Ultimate Margarita has been introduced, a madeto-order concoction featuring key limes – something easily found on the beach, but not in Boulder. Open since 1983, Juanita’s enduring popularity is due to a focus on authentic Mexican food; a friendly, closely knit staff and their special nights. Sporting a late happy hour (from 10 p.m. to midnight, Wednesday through Sunday), Juanita’s takes it a step further on Tuesday Taco Night, featuring dollar tacos, well drinks and some draft beers. “Wednesday nights we have karaoke night. BEST MARGARITA RIO GRANDE MEXICAN RESTAURANT
1101 Walnut St., Boulder 303.444.3690
Despite repeated attempts, manager Brian Cross refuses to give up the secret recipe for the one-of-a-kind margaritas famous in Boulder. He claims nobody but the original creators know it and they’re not singing. Reaching mythological proportions, the margarita that captured hearts and palates some 20 years ago are available on the rocks or frozen, and there’s even a frozen strawberry version. If you’re looking to try something different, try the frozen agave martini, made for tequila aficionados who can choose their poison before it’s mixed with Triplesec, lemon-lime mix and Grand Marnier. The Rio Marg is limited to three per person, and while the claim is that it’s for safety, the reality might be that it’d be just too much tart and tangy goodness for anyone to handle.

CARELLI’S OF BOULDER RISTORANTE ITALIANO
645 30th St., Boulder • 303.938.9300 • www.carellis.com
Greg Carelli and his restaurant have been wining and dining Boulder County for 17 years. Focusing on a combination of Northern and Southern Italian foods, such as fetuccini carbonaras, shrimp scampi and steak vesuvio, Greg feels very strongly that fine Italian dining is, “Not just about pasta.” Giving his chef a lot of latitude to play with while designing dishes, Carelli brings something different to the table every time; things like pork loin, suckling pig, polenta, quinoa and buckwheat. Fireplaces in the dining room, and incredible finishes of copper, cherry and birch make the restaurant an architectural gem. Money and attention to detail went into the décor that has garnered awards from organizations such as the American Institute of Architects. A banquet room christened La Botega di Vino, designed in what Carelli calls, “New York Schwank,” is great for large meetings, wedding rehearsal dinners or whatever else a customer can dream up. The recently revamped wine list is very thorough, drawing from an unheard-of 14 of the 20 regions of Italy and featuring more than 100 selections. Be sure to save room for dessert, since the menu includes items such as tiramisu, chocolate lava cake with cinnamon, crème brulee and spumoni.

After some reflection, manager Eartha Fine finally nails down why Abo’s Pizza is so incredibly popular in Boulder County – “It’s the sauce. I think the sauce and the thin crust. Everybody says it’s the closest to New York-style that they’ve had out in Colorado.” But before you ask, the recipe is secret. Manager Kevin Behnke thinks Cosmo’s is popular because it’s “quick, cheap and great late-night food – just a slice of pizza. The atmosphere in our place is fun, we have the music up loud, everybody’s in here after the bars.” They serve until 2:30 a.m., but if there’s a line out the door, Cosmo’s makes sure everyone gets served. They also have calzones, salads, breadsticks and even beer at the Broadway location. Cosmo’s makes its own sauce, grates its own cheese and uses fresh ingredients that are chopped daily. “It’s better quality than the normal joint and we keep our prices affordable.”

Being able to eat breakfast hot off the grill in the middle of the night is no easy feat if you’re not willing to make it yourself, but Denny’s has our backs. Its most popular dishes include the grand slam, the mini-burgers and the sampler platters – great choices to quiet the stomach after an evening out or charge up for an all-night studying session. And after 11 p.m. it’s tough to find a sit-down place to eat in at all, let alone one that’ll welcome you in flip-flops or stilettos. So bring your books and your wallet and hash out those physics over French toast like Newton would have wanted. RUNNERS UP (TIE): OLD CHICAGO

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: We live in a land-locked state. We’re lucky to have sushi at all. And then to get amazing sushi, fish that is flown in fresh daily and combinations that defy both tradition and taste expectations? Let us take a moment to appreciate the genius of Hapa. Then let us go there and order Shumai and Magic Mushrooms for starters, followed by a Spider roll, Multiple Orgasm roll and at least four kinds of nigiri. Heaven. The food at Hapa is outstanding. But that’s only part of Hapa’s appeal. It’s also a fun place to be, with a hip, welcoming ambiance and hospitable staff. “We treat people how we want to be treated,” says founder and president Mark Van Grack. That includes people of all ages. Children are welcomed with ample high chairs, mini chopsticks, origami paper and PB and J rolls. “I look at these kids as my future customers,” explains Van Grack. “Then from 7 to 9 p.m., we cater to my kind of crowd – the over-40s who don’t want to have to scream while they eat.” As the evening progresses, the music gets louder and the restaurant becomes home to a party atmosphere and a younger clientele. Hapa has something for everyone. And for that we are ever so grateful. RUNNER UP: SUSHI ZANMAI

Featuring both Thai and Japanese cuisine, the menu is as extensive as it is mouth-watering. Choose from Thai treasures such as roasted duck with Thai basil and fresh ginger curry, Japanese favorites like tempura and teriyaki, and a slew of sushi – all with plenty of vegetarian options. Every dish is prepared with high-quality ingredients and without MSG. Best of all, Siamese Plate on the Go is fast. Drop by one of its three convenient locations for a quick bite or to grab take-out – you can order ahead by phone or fax. Or take advantage of speedy delivery if you live in Boulder or Louisville. Using freshly ground spices to create the exotic dishes of the Great Mogul Court of 16th century India, the Taj specializes in combining casual dining with formal food. Look out the enormous windows at the panoramic views of the foothills as you savor a dish such as lamb korma – lamb simmered for an extremely long time in a yogurt, tomato and onion gravy. Or try the tandoori chicken, marinated in spiced yogurt before baked over live coals in the Tandoor oven. Vegetarians have plenty of options, including the Baigun Bharta, a charcoal-roasted eggplant made with ginger, garlic, tomatoes and garam masala. Entrees include sea scallops served with lobster oil and black rice, filet mignon accompanied by olive oil mashed potatoes and peppercorn sauce, and a lamb shank braised in port and paired with mushroom, tomato and parmesan risotto. On the first floor of the Bridgetown building in Lafayette resides an intimate club, a haven for music lovers – creators and appreciators alike – with a distinctly community vibe. Nissi’s attracts some of the best local, national and emerging talent around, including classical, jazz, rock, folk and blues acts. Nelson Rangell, Arthur Lee Land, Trace Bundy and Acoustic Eidolon are just a few of the artists who have recently graced the stage. “We designed this place to be artistic and classy for people who enjoy quality music, yet warm and friendly enough to bring their kids, grandparents or out-of-town guests, as [our shows are] all ages all of the time,” says owner Teresa Taylor. But Nissi’s is home to more than great music. It also offers a host of delectable, bistrostyled, small plates that melt in your mouth without burning up your wallet (prices range from $3 to $13). Nissi’s chef draws upon French, Spanish and Italian influences to create the extensive menu. Dive into the warm goat cheese salad, crab cakes, steak au poivre, Mediterranean pizza or wrapped dates. Or go straight for one of the decadent desserts; we hear the chocolate lava cake is a life changer. After only a year in business, Nissi’s has made a name for itself in both musical and culinary circles. No small feat. “Most people go out to eat and go to a movie,” says Taylor. “We just gave people an alternative – a fun, tasty dining experience along with a live show. It’s not easy to pinpoint exactly what about Oskar Blues won over voters in this category. Was it the delicious southern- and Cajuninspired cuisine? (The Texas Toothpicks are to-die-for.) Was it the selection of awardwinning microbrews? (Ever heard of Dale’s Pale Ale?) Was it the stellar lineup of live musicians? (Blues, Americana, jazz – this brewpub attracts some of the country’s top acts.) Or was it the scenic mountain-town location? (It’s the perfect place to stop after a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park.) Ever been to Lucile’s on a weekend morning? If so, you know that it’s the most happening Victorian house in town. And why wouldn’t it be? The Creole café was built on the New Orleans traditions of great food and festivity. Guests line up at the Boulder and Longmont locations to enjoy delectable dishes such as Pain Perdue (French toast), Eggs Pontchartrain (fresh pan-fried mountain trout and poached eggs with béarnaise sauce), or the Cajun Breakfast (red beans with meat and poached eggs with hollandaise served with grits or potatoes, andouille or hot Louisiana sausage, and a buttermilk biscuit). And most won’t leave without ordering the restaurant’s pièce de résistance: a plate of piping hot beignets (mouthwatering New Orleans-style donuts topped with powdered sugar). They go perfectly with chicory coffee, another restaurant specialty. Guests enjoy all these treats and more while being surrounded by Mardi Gras paraphernalia and Cajun, zydeco or jazz music. Boulder County-area residents know that as far as nice restaurants go, Flagstaff House is the crème de la crème. And this year is a very special year for the fine dining establishment – it is celebrating its 35th anniversary! Thirty-five years ago Don Monette founded the mountainside restaurant, and today he and his sons Mark and Scott continue the family tradition of serving exquisite food with detailed service in a breathtakingly beautiful location just five minutes from downtown Boulder. The menu at Boulder’s only four-star restaurant incorporates French American cuisine with Asian accents and changes daily to take advantage of the freshest seasonal ingredients, including fresh fish flown in daily, locally grown organic products, and herbs from executive chef Mark Monette’s own organic garden. And the 20,000-bottle wine cellar is one of the largest in the state. Of course, it’s the scenery that provides the perfect backdrop for such amazing food and wine: The restaurant has floor-to-ceiling picture windows and several outside terraces that afford diners unparalleled views of nearby wildlife and Boulder below. Let’s give Boulder’s Dinner Theatre a standing ovation! This lively venue has been entertaining and feeding us for almost 30 years, and has once again received rave reviews in the category of Best Theater Performance. “Our performers set us apart,” says artistic director and producer Michael Duran. “Some of them have been here for as many as 16 years. They are highly professional and very versatile and bring a lot to every production.” (In fact, Duran himself has 23 years of experience in the New York theater scene.) If you’ve never experienced one of the dinner theater’s fine meals served alongside a full-length Broadway musical, then you’ve missed out on something very special. But, rest-assured, the best is yet to come: “Crazy for You” – the Tony Award winner for Best Musical in 1992 – is playing from Nov. 3, 2006 to March 3, 2007, and “Ragtime” is playing from March 9 to May 5, 2007. ILLEGAL PETE’S
AJI LATIN AMERICAN RESTAURANT Breaking away from the pack, Aji features something not found anywhere else in Boulder: South American cuisine. Manager Jerry Manning touts the fresh ceviche and the empanadas, but if you’re willing to dig deeper, the Argentinian carne asada with authentic chimichurri for flavor or the deconstructed Brazilian feijoade, a braised meat and black bean stew, are solid choices. Unusual drinks include the caipirinha, a Brazilian drink made from a sugar cane-based liqueur. Casual diners are welcome at the lively restaurant which features South American paintings and artifacts, one of the nicer patios in town, and tons of greenery – from which the restaurant’s “leafy” name is derived.
Ever get hit with a late-night craving for Mexican food? You can mosey over to Illegal Pete’s until really late (2:30 a.m.) Thursday through Saturday, and 10:30 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and chow down burritos, tacos, quesadillas and taquitos. From chicken pesto to steak to fish or green chile, there’s plenty to satisfy your hunger. And this is Boulder, after all, so check the vegetarian menu, too. “We do a lot of late-night business; the bar crowd gets hungry and comes in,” says general manager Travis Holgate. “We get people of all ages, including tourists on the Pearl Street Mall. We take pride in the quality of the food – clean, fresh food is one of our mottos – and our staff is friendly and interactive with the customers, giving the place a community feeling.” He points out that Illegal Pete’s also has a full bar.

WHAT YOU REALLY NEED
For eight years in a row, Elevations Credit Union (formerly U of C Federal Credit Union) has been a Boulder County favorite. “We have such loyalty because our office and branches are local and because we help our account holders become more informed consumers,” says Rich Jones, vice president of marketing at Elevations. He explains that the credit union has an amazing education program – in the form of online resources and free seminars – that teaches account holders about subjects like identity theft and how to buy a new home. “We’re just as interested in helping account holders learn how to get a good deal on a car as we are in getting them the loan for the car,” he adds. “Our goal is to help Boulder County residents become financially healthy and savvy.”

Established in Boulder in 1921, Art Cleaners is the area’s oldest and most reliable dry cleaning service. Art Cleaners is also the only dry cleaner in Boulder that uses the GreenEarth-licensed dry cleaning solvent, an environmentally friendly solvent that cleans well and is odorless and gentle on clothes. “We focus on our customers,” says Brian Hansen, owner of all five Art Cleaners branches. “We do all cleaning in-house at our Lee Hill plant (except leathers), we have free pick up and delivery from or to our customers’ homes or offices, we clean lots of specialty items (such as wedding dresses and handmade quilts), we have a full-time seamstress who does minor repairs at no charge and alterations, and we can do same-day service.” With all these services at customers’ disposal, it’s no wonder that everyone cleans up well at Art Cleaners! RALLYSPORT HEALTH AND FITNESS
PRECISION PLUMBING, HEATING & COOLING
RallySport is proud to take the honor of Best Place to Work Out. “This is such a fabulous area for fitness, and people have a lot of choices about how and where to be physical, so we’re very pleased to have received this recognition,” says Erin Carson, general manager of the club. Carson says the key to the club’s success is its effort to provide the best possible exercise experience for people, mainly in the form of personal training and group exercises. RallySport also boasts racquetball courts, studios for yoga and Pilates, a nursery and playground, an indoor and outdoor lap pool, a cardiovascular area, a weight room and more.
According to Boulder County residents, Precision Plumbing, Heating & Cooling is the hottest – and coolest – air conditioning and heating service around! That’s because they have come to rely upon the locally owned and operated company for their heating, cooling, plumbing and electric needs for nearly 25 years. “The customer service we provide goes above and beyond,” says Nancy Lewin, Precision call center manager. “We hire the best of the best technicians and customer service representatives, and most of the people who work here stay here because they enjoy what they’re doing. Plus we warranty our work.”

In fact, this salon has created a whole new definition of loyal customer following. “Some of our clients have been coming here for 20 years,” says owner Kim Niles. What keeps people coming back for more? Finishing Touch has a comfortable, relaxing environment, reminiscent of the Mexican coastline. The staff – some of whom have been with the salon from its inception – is highly trained, experienced and friendly. The prices are reasonable. And the hours – Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. – are extremely convenient. “We have a lot of professional clients who need to get in on evenings and weekends,” explains Niles. The most important goal of Tae Kwon Do is cultivation of the self – body, mind and spirit. To that end, Master Vu Tran and his instructors at Tran’s Martial Arts and Fitness Center teach more than martial arts, they teach a way of life. Self-defense and physical fitness are certainly a large part of the picture. But self-esteem, responsibility, teamwork, respect, family and community are given equal importance. Students are encouraged to become leaders both in and out of the classroom, with opportunities to compete, teach other students, join leadership programs and participate in community service projects. Tran’s is also home to an explosive Thai Kickboxing program. Designed to enhance fitness for Tae Kwon Do students, the kickboxing classes are great for anyone who wants to get in shape. Dr. Jackson, Dr. Miller and Chief Surgeon Dr. Warren Tripp pay extra attention to the fact that eye surgery is delicate business. “Entrusting your eyes to someone is emotional, and we take that very seriously. You’re not going to find a better home away from home for your pet than Cottonwood Kennels. They have a peacock named Elvis, for crying out loud. What could be better than that? Located on a small farm, Cottonwood is home to many other barnyard friends – ducks, chickens, geese, sheep and alpaca – in addition to the dogs, cats, bunnies, birds and other small animals that are boarded. It’s a wonderful environment. Dogs have plenty of room to romp and play, indoors and outdoors. Cats are treated to climbing gyms, sunny windows and a jungle of plants to explore. And every pet is treated with a heaping helping of tender loving care. Cottonwood is all about the pet-to-person connection. “Our staff is incredibly hard-working and very dedicated,” says co-owner Penny Vardell. We’re not always at the top of our game when we visit the vet. The simple act of coaxing the dog into the car or wrestling the cat into the carrier is stressful enough, and that’s not taking into consideration the added worry when you have a sick pet. The grace and sensitivity with which Alpine Hospital for Animals deals with this situation truly sets it apart. “We try to stress communication between ourselves and our clients so that clients feel comfortable with the decisions they make for their pets,” explains co-owner Candace Sayles, DVM, CVA. “We try to make it less stressful for them and for their pets.” Alpine combines state-of-the-art veterinary care – it’s a fullservice hospital – with a true compassion for animals. “We love what we do,” adds Sayles.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF BOULDER
1820 15th St., Boulder • 303.402.6400 • www.fpcboulder.org
Founded in 1872, the First Presbyterian Church of Boulder is steeped in history. The chapel was added in 1894; its architect, F.E. Kidder, also built Chautauqua auditorium. Such a rich and storied past, yet First Presbyterian is known for its eye on the future. Senior pastor Dr. Peter Barnes believes people are drawn to his church for four reasons: 1) the diversity of programs and worship services, 2) equal parts tradition and innovation, 3) a clear message in the midst of competing voices, and 4) the missional focus on meeting the needs of people – body and soul – here and around the world. “We are only one small expression of the greater work of God’s kingdom in the world,” says Barnes. “And we are pleased to be partners with other churches in the area to be the hands and feet of Christ in reaching out to the world with God’s love and grace.”

As residents of Boulder County, we are fortunate in any number of ways. Not least of which is having world-class medical care in our back yard. Nonprofit and community-owned Boulder Community Hospital has been improving our health since 1922. Now the hospital is home to more than 2,600 employees, including 600 physicians in 48 medical specialties and more than 900 volunteers. In 2005, its professionals performed 259 openheart surgeries, welcomed 1,900 births and fielded 244,983 outpatient visits. Don’t let the big numbers mislead you, though; health care at Boulder Community Hospital is about quality, not quantity. Cutting-edge training, resources and equipment are standard operating procedure. Case in point: two physicians at the hospital are part of the first surgical team in Colorado to offer minimally invasive heart valve surgery. The staff ’s technical skills are surpassed only by its incredibly compassionate care. Your health matters to them on a personal level. The people of Boulder Community Hospital like what they do and like where they work. And it shows.

Real estate agents aren’t all that different from mechanics when it comes to quality of service. You can make do with mediocre, but when you find the best it’ll change your life. A great real estate agent saves you time, money and heartache. He gives you the data you need to make informed decisions. And he works toward your best interests, not his bottom line. His name is Dave Fish. “Having clients trust me to help them with something as important as their home – and then later referring me to their friends and family – is truly an honor and the best part of my job,” says Fish. So whether you’re looking for an investment property or the perfect place to hang your hat, give Dave a call and experience what the best has to offer. RUNNER UP: DUANNE DUGGAN, RE/MAX OF BOULDER

BOULDER HIGH SCHOOL / BOULDER PANTHERS
1604 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder • 303.442.2430 www.bvsd.org
Boulder High School principal Bud Jenkins feels the secret to Boulder High’s success is “a great faculty that’s very dedicated and highly motivated kids. You put the combination of those two things together and you get good results.” Besides carrying a whopping 27 advanced placement classes, the BHS Panthers place an emphasis on creating an environment that both nurtures individual students as well as giving them the tools to achieve later in life. When it comes to sports, team records aren’t everything at BHS. “Coaches connect with kids and make it a good experience for them.” Relationships are everything at Boulder High. “Our mantra here is that this school is a place for everyone,” explains Jenkins. This attitude explains the warm welcome the school extends to the entire community as well as the alumni’s fierce loyalty to the school’s sports programs.

When you walk into The Spot, you know you’ve arrived. Freestanding boulders, some 18 feet high, tower above you. A 25-foot-tall roped climbing wall looms in the distance of the more than 10,000-square-foot facility. In a word? Wow. “It’s the best bouldering gym in the country,” says regular customer and climbing enthusiast Ty Foose. “And I’ve been to hundreds of them.” In fact, The Spot is the first climbing gym in the country to be dedicated to bouldering. The terrain mirrors that of Yosemite, Hueco and Fountainebleau, giving climbers an unparalleled experience in a safe, indoor environment. As a mountaineer would say, it looks, feels, climbs and thrills like real rock. And there are real experts on hand to take every level of climber to the next elevation – classes, private guiding, teambuilding activities and more. Besides her extensive work in getting students excited about community projects such as blood drives, Kasynski also leads diversity classes in the evening for interested parents. Taking the extra time to write extensive notes on homework as well as report cards, Kasynski’s dedication to her students, their families and the community demonstrates the positive influence one person can have on a child’s life. BEST BOULDER COUNTY MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB
MOUNT SANITAS
www.ci.boulder.co.us/openspace
Just blocks from downtown Boulder you can immerse yourself in mountain fun, and the fun doesn’t get any closer or better than Mount Sanitas. Just ask one of the many lunch-hour peakbaggers that you’ll find up there on any given weekday. At the mouth of Sunshine Canyon on Mapleton Avenue (just west of 4th Street and past the Boulder Community Hospital Mapleton Center) you can pick up the trailhead on the north side of the road. Just a hop and a skip away you’ll feel like you’re miles from town. Often, Mount Sanitas climbers will do the loop hike: If you take the south ridge first, you’ll climb 1,300 feet up a steep and rocky trail for 1.4 miles before gaining the summit. At 6,683 feet, you’ll be rewarded with some great views of Boulder and the Indian Peaks. From there you can descend the steep east ridge to the valley floor, where it joins the wide, graveled Sanitas Valley Trail, which is nestled between Mount Sanitas and Dakota Ridge. This hike is a little more than 3 miles round trip and it takes most people about two hours – this average doesn’t include the many trail runners you’ll see wizzing by as you’re huffing your way up.

BEST COLORADO SKI RESORT VAIL
P.O. Box 7, Vail • 970.476.9090 • www.vail.com
It’s no wonder Vail was chosen by Boulder County residents – yet again – as Colorado’s best ski resort. Just look at the numbers – sunny days each year: 300; average annual snowfall: 346 inches; total number of lifts: 33; number of conventional ski trails: 193; number of terrain parks: 4 (including one 400-foot-long Superpipe with 18-foot walls); longest run: 4 miles; and vertical rise (from base to peak): 3,450 feet. But if those numbers aren’t enough to convince you, did you know that Vail, with 5,289 skiable acres, is the largest ski resort in the United States? Or did you know that Vail boasts the most groomed terrain in the world? Or how about the fact that you can find seven back bowls (yes, that was SEVEN) stretching six miles (yes, you read that correctly, also). Not to mention, Vail offers many specialty programs and ski classes. So regardless of your skiing abilities, Vail offers a little something for everyone – or, to put it more accurately, “a lot of something for everyone.”

HUMANE SOCIETY OF BOULDER VALLEY
2323 55th St., Boulder • 303.442.4030 • www.boulderhumane.org
Did you know the Humane Society has been around for more than 100 years? In that time, the number of companion animals that have enjoyed the shelter and nurturing of this non-profit is astronomical. With only 85 employees but 600 volunteers, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley reunited almost 2,000 animals with their guardians and mediated more than 4,600 adoptions in 2005. This non-profit sinks its energy into services that both aid animals and people, ensuring owners find their pets, teaching the community about stewardship, and providing interim homes as well as health care for displaced animals. Every animal is welcome there, despite behavioral or physical troubles, and that kind of lasting compassion is both hard to find and easy to support.
It’s quite a feat when one business wins two categories! “It all boils down to our employees,” says Scott Crouch, co-owner. “We have a great crew that believes in taking care of customers, and this award proves that our customers appreciate that.” A family-owned and operated dealership serving the area since 1951, Flatirons Acura/Subaru prides itself in offering customers the finest selection of new and pre-owned Subaru and Acura vehicles in Colorado, as well as the most advanced and comprehensive service around. They also pride themselves in their community involvement: Flatirons Acura/Subaru donates money and/or vehicles to the Kiwanis Club of the Foothills, the Eldora Special Recreation Program, Boulder and Fairview High Schools and many other local organizations.

Many participants have no previous experience with theatre productions and there is no audition process. Students study an American musical, learning the songs and dances in the span of a week and then presenting that show to the community. While the majority of the programs occur over the summer in one-week sessions, there are lunchtime and afterschool classes as well as workshops available for students from pre-school to high-school ages. At the end of the program however, the lessons learned revolve around self-esteem and comfort speaking in front of groups – and those are better things to take home than a macramé potholder. It’s an industrial-looking space located on 15th Street in Boulder – a destination gallery where main exhibits rotate every month to month-and-a-half. “The shows are very diverse. One month might be a pop art exhibit, the next landscape, and the next figurative – customers are surprised each time they come in,” says Belochi. Starting Oct. 20, 2006, Exhibitrek will be featuring the work of renowned Boulder painter Frank Sampson.

What people remark upon most at the Amazing Garage Sale is the variety of merchandise – the store carries everything from mod to retro to antique items. “I work hard to take only very unique and collectible things,” says owner Judi Lesta. Most of Lesta’s merchandise is bought from people who call her because they don’t want to organize their own garage or estate sales; however, she also does consignments. The result is what she calls “a wonderful mix of the unusual.” Customers think so, too. In fact, each week the Amazing Garage Sale sells one-third of its merchandise. In other words, if you fall in love with something, buy it right away – chances are it won’t be there when you come back. There’s no need to count sheep when you’re lying on top of a Verlo mattress. That’s because every Verlo mattress is virtually custom-fit to its owner. “We’re a factory,” explains Dick Summerfield, owner of Boulder’s store. “That means we make the mattresses right here in Boulder. If a customer finds his or her mattress to be too soft or too firm, we can tear it open and adjust it.” Being a factory also means that Verlo can sell higher-quality mattresses for less than its competitors because customers pay factory-direct prices. “Our ultimate goal is to give people a good night’s sleep,” says Summerfield. And Verlo has been doing just that for almost 20 years.

Yes, the selection is incredible. The flavors can’t be beat. The quality surpasses every expectation. The bakery, the cheese, the bulk foods, the cornucopia of organics, the essential oils and vitamins, the ready-made dinners, the olive bar, the sushi, the fresh meat, seafood and produce ... it boggles the mind. But when you ask associate store team leader Bruce Green what sets Whole Foods apart, he’s quick to tell you it’s the people. “It all ends up with our team members and our commitment to hiring the best people available,” he says. “We invest a lot in training, and we empower them to be excellent and take care of our customers.” You’ve noticed it, too, right? That time you were looking for quinoa flour or the perfect cheese to accompany your basil-infused crackers? It was easy to find someone to help, and they were happy to do it. They were really quite happy, as it turns out. Whole Foods Market was named No. 15 on Fortune magazine’s annual list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For this year. It’s been on the list since the store’s inception nine years ago. Remarkable customer service makes for a very pleasant shopping experience. And although it can’t be proven scientifically, we happen to believe it makes everything taste better, too.

DELI P.C.’S PANTRY FOR DOGS AND CATS 2600 30th St., Boulder • 303.245.9909 • www.pcs-pantry.com
With so many dog and cat lovers here in Boulder County, it’s hard to believe there was a time before P.C.’s Pantry. Featuring an almost ridiculous array of leashes, collars, toys, beds, books and more, the shop in the old Steelyards building on 30th Street really specializes in food. Sure, they have tons of healthy bagged and canned food, but with freshly baked, wild concoctions like liver loaves and salmon cookies laid out in the display cases, it’s almost guaranteed your dog will pout if you don’t bring him in with you. If you don’t have a pet, the lively and welcoming store is a good place to find one – check out the listings of little buddies that need a home and stock up on the necessities in one shot. BEST JEWELRY STORE & BEST COMPANY/STORE THAT GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY HURDLES JEWELRY
1402 Pearl St., Boulder • 303.443.1084 • www.hurdlesjewelry.com
“If anybody walks through the front door, we should be able to handle any request that they have,” explains third-generation owner Keith Hurdle. After almost 60 years in business on the Pearl Street Mall (making them the oldest retailer on the Mall without a name change), the commitment to customer service at Hurdles Jewelry has stood the test of time. “We can either find the product they’re looking for, make the product they’re looking for or refer them to someone who carries it.” With three in-house designers, the store offers full-blown custom work, so bring your design in and let their professionals hop to it. Of course, the customer service at Hurdles extends far beyond those seeking jewelry. With on-going donations of time, money and expertise bestowed upon the community, Hurdles has made a name for itself with non-profit organizations such as the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. “I try not to say no to anybody who’s local. I don’t care if it’s a school event, Boy Scouts, whoever.” For Keith Hurdle, it boils down to treating people right. “It’s a time in people’s lives where they’re trying to do something nice for somebody else and I think they should be treated accordingly.” RUNNER UP FOR BEST JEWELRY STORE: WALTERS & HOGSETT FINE JEWELERS
