1730 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.442.3003, www.pizzerialocale.com

This contemporary pizzeria, from the creators of Frasca Food and Wine, is inspired by the traditional pizzerias of Napoli, Italy. Two Frasca alumni, General Manager Chris Donato and Pizzaiolo Jordan Wallace, both trainied in Italy, are in charge. Donato says the neighborhood pizzeria theme works well. “It’s a community meeting spot, a relaxed environment where everyone hangs out. The pizza is delicious, made with basic ingredients, and there’s wine on tap. Here we follow the traditions of hundreds of years of using certain ingredients – buffalo mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, Caputo 00 [zero zero] flour. We offer warm hospitality, a well informed staff and people are taken care of.” Wallace, who had worked his way up to sous chef at Frasca’s, explains that pizzaiolo is the name given to the head chef. “It’s a prestigious role in Naples, held by some for a long term. They design the menu, are the face of the pizzeria and are treated as celebrities.” Enhancing its bona fides, Pizzeria Locale claims to have the first Stefano Ferrara oven in Colorado and the first V.D.F. prosciutto slicer in North America. “You find this style of wood-burning oven in pizzerias in Naples,” says Wallace. “They are made of brick, stone, sand and mortar and can reach temperatures of 850 to 950 degrees Fahrenheit. The V.D.F. slicer is an antique Belgian model restored by an Italian family.” Fantastico!

BEST BARBECUE

The Rib House

1801 13th St., Boulder, 303.442.RIBS; 1920 S. Coffman St., Longmont, 303.485.6988, www.theribhouse.com

Barbecue is a touchy subject. Depending on where you grew up, it can mean pulled pork doused in vinegar and pepper sauce, chicken dripping with sweet marinade, dry rubbed ribs or any number of other flavor combinations. We all think our version is the “right” one. Arguments and cook-offs ensue. In the midst of all this controversy stands The Rib House, a Kansas City-style barbecue joint that leaves no opportunity for squabbling because everyone’s mouth is too full of chef Tracy’s famous illegal ribs. Slow cooked to perfection, so tender that the meat is falling off the bone and served with your choice of four warm sauces on the side, these baby back ribs are relentlessly delicious. The Rib House is home to a wide range of hickory smoked delights – sausage, brisket, turkey, chicken and ham – as well as lip-smacking sides like okra, spicy BBQ beans, coleslaw, two kinds of potato salad, red skinned mashed potatoes, fries and a can’t-miss cheesy corn bake. Enjoy your order in-house with a cold beer or get it to go so you can share it with other reformed barbecue connoisseurs.

BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

Jax Fish House

928 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.1811, www.jaxfishhouseboulder.com

Once again, Jax takes the prize for best seafood in this landlocked part of the world. Adam Reed, executive manager of the three Jax Fish House restaurants, Boulder, Denver and Fort Collins, says, “We have had a steadfast commitment to the freshest seafood since we opened 17 years ago. Our guests can trust the freshness of our food. It’s a unique place, with familial staff, regulars who come year after year, and new people all the time.” What’s especially popular at Jax? “Our calamari sets us apart. It’s really fun to see the menu evolve. Our chef, Adam Watts, takes a seasonal, sustainable, local approach to the menu. We have sources in Colorado for striped bass and catfish, among other fish. Every Thursday is “farm to table” night; we serve what we bought at yesterday’s farmers’ market. Our fish is tremendously fresh, the best possible, high quality, with delivery from both coasts. It’s the freshest fish in Colorado.”

BEST RESTAURANT SERVICE:

Frasca Food & Wine

1738 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.442.6966, www.frascafoodandwine.com

It may not be a surprise that Frasca, home to award-winning Friuli-Venezia Giulianstyle cuisine, took home the Boulder Count Gold for customer service. The finest dining establishments must have a complementary mix of inspired food and service. Hiring a top-notch staff is just the start. “When I sit down to hire someone, their resume is not the most important thing I consider,” says Master Sommelier and co-owner Bobby Stuckey. “The most important thing is that I notice that the employee cares about people.” Another focus is ambience. An elegant, calm setting is something Frasca regulars have come to expect. “We’ve worked really hard to manage sound, so even on a busy Saturday night, every guest can hear and talk to each other, which lends itself to a better dining experience,” he says. But perhaps the most critical yet intangible aspect of service is empathy. Stuckey says, “If a guest is rushing from Denver in a snowstorm to make a 5:30 reservation, the best thing we can do is to be honored and humbled that they’re making such a huge effort.”

BEST NEW BAR

Absinthe House

1109 Walnut St., Boulder 303.443.8600, www.BoulderAbsintheHouse.com

Absinthe House opened last summer with an international theme. “My business partner is from Belgium and I worked in Europe for years,” says co-owner Eric Turner. “We do European restaurants and bars. We wanted a European flavor, something that differentiates us from other Boulder bars, which are mainly sports bars, or microbreweries, none with international flair and also a nightclub. We have DJs from all over the world.” Besides absinthe and other European-style drinks, the European theme is evident in the international menu, which offers popular panini, salads, pasta dishes and upscale pub foods. The menu frequently changes. “We have a great venue, various kinds of music and theme nights, like a 1980s European happy hour on the roof.” Because of its location, some people come in expecting the Foundry, which used to be in the same space. “We have music, DJs, dancing food and drinks, not what was here before,” Turner says. Besides its Boulder Gold award, Absinthe House was just named Best New Bar in the Denver Metro Area, by Metromix.com, an entertainment website.

BEST PLACE FOR A ROMANTIC DINNER AND BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT

Carelli’s of Boulder Ristorante Italiano

645 30th St., Boulder, 303.938.9300, www.carellis.com

Boulder loves Carelli’s. “We’ve been here 21 years,” says owner Greg Carelli, who trained as a chef in his father’s Chicago restaurant. “We do well because we’re owner-operated. I’m here every day. We’re a great neighborhood trattoria. We give good value and good price points.” And then there’s the food. “I’m a kitchen guy; food is a priority for me.” He’s fluent in Italian and goes to Italy every year to buy and to experience food and life there. He infuses those influences into the restaurant. “My chef’s accredited. She’s an artist like me. She brings in local products and imported ones that you can’t get anywhere else. We can create something special.” And the atmosphere is the third ingredient for success in business and for a romantic evening. “Architecturally, this place is stunning. We had a vision for using natural wood like cherry and birch, and copper detailing. We have four fireplaces, nice warm hues. Good food and good atmosphere creates good ‘theater.’ We spared no expense on décor; it’s beautiful here.” And with live jazz and old standards playing in the background, who wouldn’t fall in love?

Need a Philly fix? How about a grilled Steak sandwich? To build the perfect deli sandwich, Salvaggio’s starts with fresh bread, baked from scratch every day. Then they add a bounty of meat (Genoa salami, turkey, ham, roast beef, mortadella, pepperoni, steak or pastrami) and your choice of cheeses. Top it off with fresh veggies and dressing and get ready for a tasty feast. “We make wonderful sandwiches at Salvaggio’s,” says general manager Maria Gonzalez, with obvious pride. “It’s amazing how much meat we put on every sandwich.” All the side orders (like the macaroni and potato salads and the crisp coleslaw) are made in house every day, too. Salvaggio’s serves up nearly 100 sandwiches in an average day, with a great menu to choose from. Top favorites are the juicy Prime Rib (served only at the 2609 Pearl St. location), the Reuben and Italian. “Our customers like the fun, lively atmosphere, but above all, they do love our deli sandwiches,” Gonzalez says.

Classic American cooking has always been about its connection to the land. The Kitchen’s farm-to-table menu uses locally produced seasonal ingredients, simply but skillfully prepared and served to appreciative diners who are gathered around the community tables for lunch, dinner or the popular weekend brunch. Even the tables themselves are notable, many crafted locally by hand from 100-year-old reclaimed wood. “The Kitchen is a place of connection, from the people who produce the food to the people who prepare it, to the people who enjoy it in our restaurant,” says Sara Brito, director of community. Founder chefs Hugo Matheson and Kimbal Musk, with design director Jen Lewin, have created a casual but elegant ambiance that invites you to relax and enjoy the excellent food, wines and company. “All our wines are organic or sustainably produced, and we’ve worked hard to create a wine list that aligns with our food and values,” Brito explains. And when it comes to values, The Kitchen walks the talk: Monday nights feature a fourcourse family style dinner with 20 percent of the profits going to help plant gardens in local elementary schools.

This ain’t your corporate burrito, friends. “You can get a burrito anywhere,” says general manager Gabe Smith, “but here you know you are going to get fresh, local ingredients served by friendly people. All our beef and pork is from Niman Ranch, our avocados are organic and you get a generous serving of everything.” Hey, that’s how Illegal Pete’s rolls, and we love it. What’s your favorite? Chicken, Beef, Pork Carnitas, go Vegetarian or go Fish – it’s all good! Just step up and tell the friendly burrito meister what you want on your very own masterpiece and it’s ready in just minutes. Add a cold beer or a tasty concoction from the full bar. “We’re locally, independently owned,” Smith says, “we dress how we like, play good music, keep the line moving quickly and work hard to make everybody happy.” Up early? Rise and dine with a breakfast burrito brimming with eggs, potatoes and cheese and all the fixins. Enjoy two convenient locations, on The Hill or on the Pearl Street Mall. Roll on buddy, roll on.

Cosmo’s Pizza

Cosmo’s Pizza’s celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. In this decade it has become an essential resource for Boulderites and legions of college students. “You get great service, a high-quality and consistent product, and you get it on time,” says owner Ryan Shorter. “We’re always striving to make it a great experience. Customers can be sure the pizza is the same as it was five years ago; it hasn’t changed since I started.” He credits Cosmo’s success to hard work, too, and attention to detail; he visits the two Boulder shops and the Denver shop every day. General Manager Kevin Behnke cites “great food, atmosphere and reasonable prices. Our pizza slices are huge; we make 24-inch pizzas. We grate our own cheese, make our own sauce and cut all the vegetables in the shop. We make our dough every day; it’s the best in town for taste and consistency, all hand-tossed.” Business is brisk at Cosmo’s every night of the week until closing at 2:30 a.m. After the bars shut down at 1:30 a.m., “People go home and get hungry and call us, almost exclusively for pizza slices,” says Behnke. And to make the deal even sweeter, delivery is free every day.

You can take our food to go and know it will be fresh.” There’s an iPhone app for ordering takeout from Noodles and you can order online through the website, www.noodles.com. “This has been crucial so folks can jump the line.” Favorite takeout dishes are penne rosa, Wisconsin mac & cheese and Japanese pan noodles. You can order “square bowl” meals to go – containers big enough to feed a family. Sandwiches are popular, too, especially the chicken Mediterranean. The focus is fresh, fast and friendly environment with globally inspired foods. Yum.

“We want people to feel they’re coming into our living room,” says Phil Vaughn, manager of Avery Brewing Tap Room. “We want them to be well accommodated, with great service by a staff educated about the brewing process. The fact that our bartender is in love with the product makes for a better experience.” The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with copper paneling and an old-fashioned tavernlike feeling. Favorites are the one-off beers not found elsewhere. “We have a series of beers that come out over the year. We release them once until they’re gone. The number one seller is India pale ale, which focuses on hops; we add more hops and get more aroma. Another favorite is the Out of Sight, a coffee-flavored beer; the Unseen Bean in Boulder brews a coffee for us and we use it to infuse our beer.” Tappings take place every Friday. “It’s all about educating the customers. We’re changing the perception of beer. We’re opening people’s eyes to new things.”

BEST BAR

Sundown Saloon

1136 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.449.4987

First off, the Sundown Saloon is an unpretentious, unrepentant bar, not a cocktail lounge, OK? So expect great deals on the PBR and rotating drink specials, a friendly round of darts or shuffleboard, free pool in the daytime and a rockin’ juke box that plays some killer old school tunes. It doesn’t have to be complicated to be fun or even to win the Best Bar award. Happy hours can get pretty crowded, especially when CU is in session. Did we mention it’s in a basement? Frommer’s Review (yes, that Frommer’s) calls the Sundown Saloon a “raucous dive” and a “CU institution” which seems about right since it’s been here, like “forever.” If you consider yourself a true local, you gotta “do the ‘Downer’” at least once. And if you are a true local, we bet you already have.

Brasserie Ten Ten

Lucile’s Creole Cafe

Sometimes there’s just nothing like some good ole’ Creole. You can’t eat it every day, but that’s what makes the highly indulgent breakfast at Lucile’s that much more special. With a long history, since 1980, in downtown Boulder’s delightfully cozy yellow Victorian, Lucile’s famed Chef Mickey continues to hand-make impossibly fluffy yet crunchy buttermilk biscuits, decadent pain perdue (New Orleans-style French toast), authentic beignets, grits, red beans and about every Cajun-inspired egg dish known to man. “We emphasize fresh ingredients and quality,” says general manager Shin Chang. “We don’t do leftovers and there’s nothing out of a bag.” Lucile’s is a place to eat, certainly, but also to enjoy a cup of Southern Louisiana chicory coffee, fresh-squeezed orange juice, café au lait or homemade hot chocolate with friends at the eatery’s community tables. With its energetic vibe, knowledgeable staff and celebration-worthy dishes, Lucile’s is like a little Creole party every morning.

The Buff Restaurant 1725 28th St., Boulder, 303.442.9150, www.buffrestaurant.com

While this French-inspired eatery started serving up yummy meals in 2003, it’s Brasserie Ten Ten’s decadent weekend brunch that has really caught on. Thanks to executive chef Anthony Hessel’s (who also heads The Med) immersion in French culture and cooking overseas, the restaurant maintains a lively social scene that feels like a true brasserie. “It’s a place to have fun, eat well, enjoy your friends and relax with a glass of French wine or Belgian beer,” says spokesperson Peggy Romano. The atmosphere is only trumped by the wide variety of scrumptious late-morning edibles. Favorite entrees for sweet and savory taste buds include fresh fruit bellinis, eggs Benedict, and the pan-roasted chicken and waffle with herb and peach syrup (back by popular demand). Salads, soups, steak frites and crepes also crowd the menu. New items include a country scramble and scrambled eggs with Long Family Farm pork belly and local farm-fresh vegetables. The menu changes seasonally but the solid service, thankfully, does not.

BEST LAFAYETTE/LOUISVILLE/SUPERIOR/ERIE RESTAURANT:

The Empire Lounge Restaurant

816 Main St., Louisville, 303.665.2521, www.theempirerestaurant.com

It’s like that place where everyone knows your name: friendly and comfy yet incredibly fresh and inspired at the same time. In addition to Julia Child naming owner/chef Jim Cohen one of “eleven best chefs in America,” Empire Lounge and Restaurant boasts another accolade: a Zagat rating as one of the top 10 restaurants in Colorado. But these lofty accomplishments have yet to change this alwayswelcoming establishment, where regulars come together for consistently good, locally sourced and reasonably priced grill-based foods. “Our key to success has been to offer amazing food at a very approachable price,” says general manager Lexi Cohen. To extend its community reach beyond neighborhood diners, Empire has trimmed down its regular menu to add a fresh “farm menu,” featuring the best produce from area farms that week. But don’t worry, the savory burgers, coal miner’s mac and cheese and Chef Connie’s famed rustic apple tart with vanilla ice cream are still around. So tell all your friends: A newly refurbished back room is ready for parties of up to 50.

BEST LONGMONT/LYONS RESTAURANT:

The cuisine at Colterra is inspired by the flavors of Southern France and Northern Italy. Owner/Executive Chef Bradford Heap received classic European training from culinary legends like Alain Ducasse, Georges Blanc and Carlo Cioni. He has served as guest chef at the prestigious James Beard House and had successful stints at Full Moon Grill and Chautauqua Dining Hall. Heap’s love of French and Italian cooking and desire to work intimately with local farmers, ranchers and purveyors is at the root of his vision. He strives to use seasonal, fresh, local ingredients to produce original flavors in each and every dish. The organic gardens at Colterra allow him to grow some of his own produce and herbs. Heap’s ability to create simple clean flavors from ultra-fresh local produce has earned him a loyal following. He invites guests to try a variety of tastes and sip various wines by the glass from a substantial wine list.

In a small-batch brewery that birthed the award-winning, hand-canned, hoppynosed Dale’s Pale Ale, everything else is supposed be a sideshow, right? Wrong. At Oskar Blues, the Cajun-infused provisions, house-smoked North Carolina BBQ and remarkable lineup of live music shows makes the beer seem like relish on a muffaleta. Two locations give both Lyons and Longmont an intimate hometown craft beer bar where neighbors and friends can connect over liquid, solids and airwaves. So whether you come for the local and national blues, rock, bluegrass, jam bands, folk, Americana or trad-country acts, some Southern-style comfort food, or your favorite craft pour straight from the tap, each visit is an eclectic experience found only at Oskar Blues.

2580 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.442.0320; 2331 Clover Basin Drive, Longmont, 720.652.9229, www.redrobin.com

There’s some special ingredients that go in to making a restaurant deliciously kid-friendly. And for a couple of decades now, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers has nailed it. It’s about toddler-approved bottomless spaghetti and parent-approved grilled chick-on-a-stick. It’s great milkshakes, Freckled Lemonade (strawberry lemonade), apple pie bites and messy mud pie, plus some seriously tasty burgers for which adults always seem to find an excuse to bring the family back. But more importantly, says Eric Frey, general manager at the Boulder location, “We connect with the family and their children. We go out of our way. We talk directly to the kids.” Here kids are free to order for themselves, even if it takes awhile; bring 30 friends to celebrate a birthday in style; and jump around with a balloon in one hand and chicken fingers in the other. It’s just that kind of place.

At Vic’s, first and foremost it’s about the coffee. Good coffee, dark roasted and served pretty much anyway you want it: solo, doppio or with a splash of steamed almond milk. If you can order it, they can make it. The baristas are friendly in a noncorporate way and keep things moving. Locally-baked scones, pastries and muffins go great with your espresso, or tuck into one of MAME’s tasty breakfast burritos while the free wi-fi keeps you plugged in and productive. The Vic’s ambiance somehow manages to be both busy and laid-back at the same time. Meet a friend at a table out front, or chill inside with the laptop crew and work on your great American novel (or spreadsheet – whatevah). As a perennial winner of the Boulder County Gold award, Vic’s success is all about “good product, good service, good customers and a good staff.” Good enough to be the best, we say.

1770 13th St., Boulder, 303.442.4993, www.boulderteahouse.com

The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse has become a cultural icon. This piece of art and gathering place was created as a gift from the mayor of Dushanbe, Boulder’s sister city in Tajikistan. Over three years, more than 40 artisans from Tajikistan handcrafted ceiling, tables, stools, columns and exterior ceramic panels to reassemble in Boulder and showcase the country’s wood-carving and painting skills handed down through the generations. Today the teahouse is a quiet community presence where Boulderites enjoy one of the world’s oldest rituals—tea time. The menu features over 100 premium loose-leaf teas, including interesting international imports and blends. There are food options for all meals, as well as brunch, appetizer and dessert items for the in-between times. A traditional afternoon tea is served from 3 to 5 p.m. at English-style white linen tables, along with a pot of tea and a tower of pastries, cucumber sandwiches and sweet cakes. There’s even a special children’s afternoon tea, perfect for birthday parties.

BEST DESSERT

The Cheesecake Factory 1401 Pearl Street, Boulder, 303.546.0222, www.thecheesecakefactory.com

At The Cheesecake Factory, it’s not just about graham cracker crusts, cheese-sweet filling and sour cream topping. Offering a huge variety of sweets and treats keeps this Pearl Street establishment always fresh when it comes to dessert. Under low lights, in comfy booths and with a little mood music locals can be alone with decadence in many popular forms, according to manager Alice Smith – Godiva Chocolate Brownie Sundae, a refreshing Bowl of Fresh Strawberries and cheesecake flavors ranging from Reeses Peanut Butter to Red Velvet to Dulce de Leche Carmel. But that’s just for starters, or an ending. The Cheesecake Factory also does small plates, entrees, a “skinny” menu (with everything under 590 calories), specialty liqueur drinks, kids classics, 12 new milkshakes, coffee concoctions, fruit smoothies and so much more. Here there really is something to that saying “there’s something for everyone.”

This year Glacier celebrates its 10th anniversary in business, and what a ride it’s been. New stores have opened – including one in Northglenn and three in China! The wholesale business to restaurants in Boulder and Denver has blossomed. Gelato is faring well; owner Mark Mallen’s son manned the cart on the Pearl Street Mall this summer. Glacier is doing a lot of ice-cream catering: “We set up sundae bars in Boulder and Denver,” says Mallen, “and we have a 2,000-person event coming up.” Its ice cream factory tours are also popular; with more than 1,000 taking place so far this year. (At the end of the tour, you get to eat fresh ice cream with your choice of toppings.) A top seasonal seller is fresh Colorado peach ice cream, about which owner Mark Mallen says, “We’ll process over 1,000 pounds of peaches a year from the Western Slope to make ice cream, gelato and sorbet.” Glacier’s ice cream makers experiment a lot, and come up with such popular flavors as triple berry sorbet and vanilla raspberry truffle. “It’s not just about eating ice cream,” Mallen says. “We try to create a fun atmosphere for people and families. We employ great people – the ice cream makers and the counter people. We’re very grateful to the Boulder community. They recognize quality products and have given us great support. It inspires us to do new things.”

Breadworks

2644 Broadway, Boulder, 303.444.5667, www.breadworks.net

A lot of locals got acquainted with the Breadworks over a bowl of one of their famous soups or a tasty Panini, just two choices on the menu that is created each day by Colleen Doran, a classically trained executive chef. But those diners sure notice the bread their lunch is served with, too. “We started with the bread,” says owner Larry Dimnitz, who opened the Breadworks on Valentines Day, 1995. “We still use 100-percent organic flour, hand-shape each loaf and bake it in the stone hearth oven like we have for 17 years.” A lot of the 40 to 50 different types of bread are seasonal favorites, like the Roasted Squash Bread with butternut squash, cranberries and currants. Besides selling their artisan baguettes, ficelles and Bavarian pretzels and more to customers in the store, Breadworks also supplies their bread and baked goods to many local restaurants and grocery stores across Boulder County. The kitchen runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to get it done. “We figured it up recently; we’ve mixed over 13 million pounds of bread since we opened,” Domnitz laughs.

Want a perfect way to reward yourself at the end of a hard day? Get over to happy hour at The Med, where there’s a bounty of tasty tapas, mouthwatering pizzas and refreshing cool drinks guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Seven days a week from 3 to 6:30 pm, The Med’s happy hour menu tempts us with small-plate selections from the culinary traditions of the sunny Mediterranean. Order several and pass them around – you’re bound to discover a new “favorite” you haven’t tried yet. “We keep our prices at real happy prices,” says Peg Romano, who opened The Med over 17 years ago. “It’s a great deal, and we’re not going to change the formula; it’s working great. We even make our own fresh mozzarella cheese.” Start with Bruschetta, some Fried Artichoke Hearts and perhaps some Polenta with red pepper coulis and a nice glass of Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. The Margarita pizza, bubbly hot from the wood-fired oven with its golden crust, is divine simplicity (they serve up to 200 of them on a weekend night), perfect with a draft beer or glass of Chianti. Or get fancy with Cabbage leaves stuffed with cous-cous, peppers, olives and pine nut salad – a crunchy mélange of flavor that will have you ordering seconds. There’s no better place to enjoy your happy hour, lunch or dinner than the fabulous courtyard patio, just a few steps from the hustle-bustle of downtown. With its colorful geraniums, market umbrellas, hand painted tiles and a fountain, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a private garden retreat in Italy. It’s no surprise that The Med is a veteran winner of the Best Outdoor Dining award. We guarantee you’ll long to linger just a little longer.

Slow Dance With A Hot Pickup, Phantom, The Drowsy Chaperone. What a great lineup of shows – and they’re playing in Boulder this season. Since 1977, Boulder's Dinner Theatre has delighted audiences with live, Broadway-quality entertainment and fine dining – with a twist: The actors serve the food. “We do good theatre,” says Artistic Director Michael Duran. ”I’m very proud of our talented cast and the set design, costumes, lighting design, and live orchestra. And I’m proud that our actors also wait tables, so the audience sees them up close and personal. Some great relationships develop between audience members and cast members. Some people have been coming here since we opened. Others are here for the first time. As to the food, we try to vary the menu, make the food taste good and look good, within the limited capacity of our kitchen. We keep it varied because people come here more than once. We hope to keep entertaining in the Boulder area for many more years.” Members of the company have performed all over the country, from New York and Chicago to Hollywood. They've been cast in sitcoms and feature films. Some have been nominated for Academy Awards. Some are just starting out. But they all call Boulder's Dinner Theatre "home."

With all the pizza parlors in Boulder, what makes this one stand out? Jim Cohen, chef and partner in Pizzeria da Lupo, has convincing answers. “We use a woodburning oven, slow-rising dough made with Caputo flour from Naples, great olive oil and San Marzano tomatoes – a cut above what most pizzerias use. My background in high-end restaurants differentiates us from others. We use very fine ingredients.” But, he points out, “We are not pretentious, our wine list is not high-priced. We are very old world.” Cohen first got interested in pizza at the Phoenician Hotel in 1996. “I started working on the dough; slow fermented dough develops a lot of flavor. Ours ferments for three days at 40 degrees.” Other pizzerias tend to make the dough in the morning and use it the same day. Reviewers give raves to the crust; one describes it as “crispy, wood-fired, golden, flaky, with just-enough-salt-thatis-not-too-soft-or-doughy.” Cohen and partner Ken Wolf also own Empire Lounge and Restaurant in Louisville.

For authentic Mexican food, speed past the fast-food chains and settle in at Efrain’s, a Lafayette institution for more than two decades. This is the mother ship for three restaurants serving home-cooked favorites from the Gomez family’s trove of traditional recipes. “I’m happy with the menu right now and the customers are, too,” says owner George Gomez. Chicken chimichanga is the most popular dish, with chicken and beef fajitas and chile verde is not far behind. “We sell a lot of margaritas and we have the best prices. The tequila company we buy from says we buy a lot of tequila.” Recently, another Efrain’s restaurant opened in Lafayette, just four blocks away, named Senor Gomez. “We serve breakfast and lunch there now. The food is different from our other restaurants and we’re still working on the menu. In the future, we’ll open for dinner, too.”

It seems like you can find sushi just about anywhere these days, from the deli aisle at your grocery store to food trucks that deliver it to your office. A lot of it is “good enough” but there’s only one place to get the best, and that’s at Japango – your premier destination for authentic sushi. Fresh fish is flown in daily and turned into tempting tidbits of Nigiri, Temaki, Sashimi and custom rolls by skillful sushi masters. “Our master chef was trained in traditional sushi making in Japan and has been doing this for 42 years,” says owner Jon Banis. “That’s just one example of how committed we are to bringing you the best and freshest sushi we can.” Japango’s stylish, hip ambiance complements the visual delights on your plate, and the staff is friendly and energetic. Sit at the sushi bar and meet a new friend as you watch the sushi crew work their magic, or grab a table and enjoy exploring the generous menu choices. You’ll also find other traditional and Asian-inspired dishes, like Lobster Potstickers, Spicy Calamari or the Hawaiian Tuna Steak with wasabi sauce and vegetables. “We strive to maintain an authenticity to Japanese cuisine,” Banis explains, from the ingredients and recipes to the way each dish is composed on the plate. Tuesday is All-You-Can-Eat Sushi Night, a favorite event so popular that people write it on their calendars. From 5 to 10 p.m., order just about anything you want from the sushi or dinner menu and don’t stop ‘till you’ve had enough. “We’ve done this since we opened almost 12 years ago,” Banis says, “and we have a packed house all night long. It’s crazy, but great.”

“We’re one of a kind,” says Gerald Manning, managing partner of Leaf. “In Boulder there’s not another concept of a full-scale vegetarian restaurant serving world cuisine. The room is a beautiful, tranquil setting. The chefs have done a great job with the menu. We hold ourselves to a particular standard of quality and we stay ahead of the curve of what vegetarians are looking for in their food and drink.” All the wines served at Leaf are biodynamically or organically grown. “We’re focusing our wine list on domestic products to limit the carbon footprint, including Colorado growers like Jack Rabbit Hill and Two Rivers.” A new addition to the Leaf enterprise is Three Leaf Farm, almost two acres of land at US Highway 287 and South Public Road acquired in February. In its first season, it has produced a bounty of greens, veggies, fruits and herbs.

BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT

Tandoori Grill

619 S. Broadway St., Boulder, 303.543.7339, www.tandoorigrillboulder.com

For those who savor the tastes and aromas of Indian cuisine, Tandoori Grill has been a Boulder destination for 13 years. Gurjeet Dhanoa, owner of Tandoori Grill with her husband, Paul, says, “We’re successful because we serve good food. Paul is the head chef, and he’s a really good cook; he was trained by his mom. Our food is very consistent. Our other two chefs have been with us for six years and eight years. We don’t change the way we prepare things. Our foods are typically Punjabi, from the Punjab region in northwest India.” She describes the cuisine as fusion: steaks, salmon, duck and mahi mahi are prepared using Indian spices and cooking methods. Steak and corn, for example, are cooked in the tandoori oven. In preparing coconut shrimp, the chefs substitute chickpea flour for regular American flour. “We get more and more busy every year. The most popular dishes are chicken tikka masala, chili tandoori chicken, and bengan bartha (roasted eggplant). When my husband does a special dish, if it hits well, we put it on the menu.”

BEST PLACE TO HEAR LIVE MUSIC:

Boulder Theater

2032 14th St., Boulder, 303.786.7030, www.bouldertheater.com

There’s a fine balance between holding on to a rich history and pushing forward to appeal to modern tastes. The crew at the Boulder Theater seem to have found just the right mix. First opened in 1906 with a lineup of silent movies, operas and musicals, this century-old theater has a certain lived-in vibe that is impossible to replicate in Boulder. However, while the art deco style, murals and fresco ceiling create a cool atmosphere, an aging balcony seating and older sound system does not a spectator-friendly joint make. So in July the Boulder Theater replaced the upper deck with comfy new seats and added a state-of-the-art sound system. Change is good—in more ways than one. Just off a merger with Boulder’s Fox Theatre, talent buyer Kirk Peterson says the Boulder Theater lineup of shows— music, comedy, benefits and more—are better than ever. Two solo shows with Jeff Tweedy kicked off this year. “It’s nice to be able to focus on putting on the right show in the right room in Boulder instead of constantly competing,” he says. With two complementary venues, “We can schedule like-minded shows on different nights and it’s helped us stabilize ticket prices.” As for variety, Boulder Theater booked the Disco Biscuits, The Decemberists, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Ice Cube, Iron and Wine and an African acoustic show this year. B.B. King just played a sold-out show, and the theater kicked off its first-annual Boulder Roots and Blues Summit Festival (with Cheryl Crow and Lucinda Williams, among others). Stand-up has ranged from Seth Meyers to Canadian act the Trailer Park Boys. Leveraging its storied past with a bright outlook for the future, this multi-faceted venue has only just begun.

BEST BOULDER COUNTY EVENT:

Boulder Creek Festival

Downtown Boulder along Boulder Creek, 303.449.3137, bceproductions.com

It’s hard to believe Boulder’s rite of summer, the Boulder Creek Festival, has been around for 25 years. Maybe it’s been so successful because organizers listen to what citizens say they like and dislike—and tweak the creek scene it to perfection each year. With 10 event areas, five stages and nearly 500 vendors, you’ll need more than one day to experience all the food, art, performances, informational booths, family activities, and the Great Rubber Duck Race (benefiting the Boulder Parks and Recreation EXPAND Program). Recently the festival has focused on becoming a zero waste event, says Meg Denbow, Director of Communications for BCE Productions. “BCE has managed to reduce the landfill waste at the Boulder Creek Festival by close to 40% in the past two years.” Hundreds of volunteers are the event’s unsung heroes. “Generations of families have grown up volunteering together and they are a pivotal part of the significance and success of BCE’s management of the festival,” she says.

Rally Sport Health & Fitness Club

A winner in three categories this year, RallySport is proving it has something for everybody. While the facility has earned its reputation over 30 years, it never rests on its laurels. Each year, RallySport upgrades with new equipment, evolved fitness classes, exceptional trainers and the kind of general maintenance that keeps customers happy and healthy. Just coming off a massive renovation, everything at RallySport feels fresh and new, says director Erin Carson. “We have consistently invested in the most cutting-edge equipment. This year we are featuring 40 new bicycles, fully equipped with power meters, in our group cycling area.” But technology is only one aspect of the facility’s success. Taking care of its people is even more important. “RallySport is truly a community,” says Carson. “We take interest in our members’ lives and want to be sure that they are getting what they had hoped for from their health club.” Two ways Rally accomplishes just that is with over 30 top-notch personal trainers and life-balancing classes like yoga and Pilates. Trainers are encouraged to continue their education and focus on resultsoriented functional training and sport-specific workouts as well as crucial muscle development and strength. Group classes are equally effective, featuring instructors who take their practices very seriously and many parent participants who can truly focus while their kids are nurtured at RallySport’s amazing well-organized childcare facility.

Grease Monkey keeps Boulder moving. Offering a full line of fluid maintenance services, this family-owned store (28th Street) since 1984 has developed a loyal following at its now seven Boulder County locations. “We’re really focused on customer service and honesty,” says general manager and owner Tim Reeves. “We strive to be honest and upfront in everything we do. We follow manufacturer specs to a tee and give customers enough information for them to make an educated decision. We’re not pushy.” He says repeat customers come from as far as Aspen for regular service. Patrons also appreciate the free top-off service: A complimentary check and fill of major fluids plus tire pressure check and set between a regular Grease Money full-service oil change. With lots of competition in the car-dealing business, Flatirons always seems to rise above the sea of mediocrity. Perhaps it’s the family-owned feel at the dealership, passed down from managing partner Scott Crouch’s father who opened his first Boulder dealership nearly 60 years ago. It could also be Flatirons’ approach to service. A team of advisors tries to make each car-buying experience personal and, well, downright fun. In addition to a wide variety of Acura and Subaru models plus meticulously inspected previously owned cars, Flatirons has added the Hyundai line at a fully renovated 30th Street facility. “With the addition of the Hyundai brand to our Subaru and Acura line-up we feel like we have three product lines matched perfectly for the Boulder market,” says Crouch. “Subaru continues to dominate the Boulder market and we are looking forward to the all-new Subaru Impreza, which should be arriving this fall.” In the spring, Acura will debut the re-designed RDX sport utility with a new MPG rating of 30 MPG. With over five decades of experience under its money belt, Elevations Credit Union has become one of Boulder County’s largest and most successful credit unions. Claiming over 80,000 member-owners, Elevations has established a deep foundation and lasting relationship with the community it serves. This financial institution offers all the traditional personal and business banking products and services: credit cards, checking and savings accounts, and loans for cars, college, mortgage or business needs. Staffed with financial advisors who understand investments, income and retirement planning and can help members make the smartest and most fiscally responsible choices, Elevations is once again the credit union of choice for Boulder County residents.

Sometimes you don’t need a big box of bolts. “We have lots of products that we sell in single units,” says McGuckin marketing manager Randy Barker. “You can buy one nut, bolt, screw, washer, sheet of sandpaper or a single picture hanger. We sell grass seed by the pound and rope, chain or cable by the foot.” That’s just one of the simple but profound things McGuckin Hardware does every day to service its loyal customers. Another is employing a helpful team of experts. “When you buy from us, our knowledgeable employees can help you select the right product the first time. At other stores you are sometimes on your own, and if you are not competent in what you are doing you may purchase the wrong thing,” says Barker. “In some cases, we have assisted customers in repairing their product rather than having to bear the expense of a replacement.” Speaking of repairs, McGuckin houses a service shop that cuts keys and glass, repairs window screens and lamps, cut boards, replaces broken tool handles and sharpens knives and blades.

The key to their high standard of customer service is empowerment. “They are completely empowered to make decisions that ensure that our clients are well taken care of,” Doug says. “They can do what they need to do so all the customers are satisfied.” After 23 years in business, Tans To Go features the products and services that make it Boulder County’s number-one choice for tanners. “There are many choices out there,” says Cindy. “We need to earn our customers’ business and treat them well to keep it.” A wonderful new addition to the menu of services is a full massage therapy program, with 30-, 60- and 90-minute massages; state-ofthe-art equipment adds to the quality of the service for clients. And Tans To Go has greatly enhanced its custom airbrush business, offering remote airbrush direct to your home and business. “We are proud to be selected once again by CU to sponsor the Cheer and Dance teams,” says Doug.

This business has a long history in Boulder. “We are one of the original storage facilities in town and the first on the north side,” says owner Michelle Luko. “We have been in business for over 30 years and I have customers who have been here over 30 years!” The key is great customer service. “We’re here for our customers – we’re a friendly and knowledgeable staff. We have a clean facility, a variety of storage sizes, available parking, and we’re a one-stop place for possessions and vehicles. We also accept small boats. Our great location is another reason why customers store here. In the summer we help the students with their storage needs. Our employees love being here; we all love our job, to help people in a stressful situation. We meet a lot of neat people.” The staff is definitely long-term; the former manager was here for 17 years. Boulder Bins believes in doing community service, too; they gave the Fourmile Fire victims one free year of storage.

BEST SINGLES HANGOUT

BEST PLACE TO ENTERTAIN KIDS

1002 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.5335, www.themedboulder.com

Pearl St., Boulder, www.boulderdowntown.com

Whether by choice or by chance, we’ve all done some solo time as a “single.” The very term seems to suggest you’re a little “less than,” doesn’t it? But hey, being single has its good points. You never have to fight over the TV remote, or make what’s-for-dinner compromises. And you get to flirt like you mean it. We choose The Mediterranean Restaurant as this year’s top spot for singles to hang out, put on that flirt and (just maybe) meet someone special. Two full bars, cozy dining areas and a romantic outdoor patio set the scene, providing lots of quality people watching. Kick back with the good tunes, tasty tapas and a shared bottle of wine, enjoy some witty repartee and see what happens. The Med’s the perfect spot to start something new (we’ve heard that couples think it’s great, too).

The Pearl Street Mall is famous for its shopping, dining and bars – always a good time for the adults. But the mall was designed from the beginning as a special place for entertaining kids, too – and most of the fun is completely free. What envious adult hasn’t wanted to join in the exuberant fun of the pop-jet fountain (in the 1300 block) on a hot summer day? The frog and snail sculptures in the 1400 block – a favorite “photo-opp” – patiently await your climbing kids. Rock structures and fountains beckon young explorers. And our perennial favorite street performers are guaranteed to make the little ones stop in their tracks and watch in awe, as Ibashi-i contorts himself into a small Plexiglass box, or the busker in a top hat on an eight-foot unicycle juggles fiery batons. Frequent arts and ethnic festivals add to the fun and texture of a visit to the mall and seasonal events like the Munchkin Masquerade (a costume parade and trick-or-treat visit to mall merchants scheduled for Monday, Oct. 31 from 2 to 5 p.m.) add festivity to this special place in the heart of our city. Watch for these additional holiday events, for the young and the young-at-heart: Switch on the Holidays (Santa counts down to the illumination of the Boulder County Courthouse, the Pearl Street Mall and the star on Flagstaff Mountain, Sat. Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.); St. Nick on the Bricks (Santa visits the mall Friday. Nov. 25 and Saturdays Nov. 26 through Dec. 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and holiday favorite the Lights of December Parade (marching bands, floats, fire engines, scouts, carolers and much more, Sat. Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.).

Typically, they study at Wildflower School between three and seven years. ”A huge thanks to the voters in the Boulder Gold Awards who recognized the faculty, staff, students and parents at Boulder High School,” says Principal Kevin Braney. “We appreciate the recognition from the community; it’s great to get such good news at the beginning of the school year. We’re fortunate that we have talented students and teachers. We focus on our students first and then on programs. Our students are very talented and creative and dedicated to learning and growing at the school. In general, we’ve been working hard to engage students and parents to make Boulder High an even better place. We have a lot of talented supporters who help us to improve the school.” Founded in 1875 as part of the University of Colorado, Boulder High School is one of Colorado’s oldest and finest high schools, maintaining strong traditions in academics, athletics, fine arts and activities. The school has a strong academic reputation, with one of the most extensive Advanced Placement programs in the state.

We have only 60 to 70 residents and 60 employees – we’re like a family. We, all employees, always try to go the extra mile for everyone here,” McMurray says. The Academy has completed construction on a new spa and fitness center with salt-water lap pool, hot tub, an exercise room with state-of-the-art weight and cardio equipment designed for seniors and a massage and treatment room. They also added a bar for socializing and a community room with audio specifically designed for people with hearing aids.

Hearing loss can distance us from the world around us. Its causes can be complex, and we want to have the highest confidence in those who diagnose and rehabilitate the condition. The staff at the Family Hearing Centers brings unmatched technical expertise and personal commitment to their work. “We are fiercely dedicated to staying at the cutting edge of technologies and being continuously attentive to the human side of our profession,” says senior audiologist and owner Christopher Schweitzer, Ph.D. “We take seriously the old adage: ‘Everyone is Different, and Everyone is the Same.’ We recognize the shared experiences of hearing care consumers, but focus on the uniquely individual and often nuanced needs.” What do people like most about Family Hearing Center? “I have to think it is the personal attention, balanced with professional skill. Our company started serving the hearing care needs of Boulder area residents in 1963, so we are closing quickly on the 50 year mark!” Schweitzer says. “It’s unbelievably gratifying to be involved in the restoration of inter-personal connections; that’s what we’re all about. Once the medical issues are addressed appropriately, it’s all about connections of people to messages and to the sounds of Nature.”

Residents enjoy a full menu of activities and amenities designed for all levels of care. “We address the whole person at Frasier Meadows,” says Lyn McQueen, director of wellness. “It’s exciting seeing people get excited about the possibilities in their life, including all the social, physical, intellectual and spiritual aspects.” Community events at the Wellness Center (which is being renamed the Alice Mae and Aubrey Bowen Wellness Center at Frasier Meadows) can include a concert band, ice cream and peach festival, CU night, a field trip to the Boulder Philharmonic, gin rummy and line dancing. Frasier Meadows residents are also active in Community Food Share and the Circle of Care (a program for those interested in auditing classes at CU). “Our continuous care program allows residents to stay within their familiar community as their care needs change,” McQueen explains. The caring staff works hard to make Frasier Meadows the best. “This is a vibrant and friendly, dynamic community that really values the quality of life, for everyone who lives or works here. It’s a team effort, and we work with each client to get to where they want to go. Founded in 1922, Boulder Community Hospital is a community-owned and operated not-for-profit medical facility providing the full range of care to Boulder County citizens. “Patients and their families recognize that our doctors, nurses, other staff and volunteers work diligently every day to make medical care at BCH as good as it can be,” says Rich Sheehan, director of marketing and public relations. “BCH is a ‘community hospital’ in the truest sense -- our patients are also our neighbors and friends, so we really strive to make sure they receive care that addresses their emotional and spiritual needs as well as their physical condition.” BCH is recognized statewide for the quality of its cardiology, orthopedic and neurological services, and the expertise of talented and experienced surgeons attracts patients from across Colorado. “We have a proud tradition of introducing new procedures and technologies to Boulder County. For example, we’re the only hospital in the county offering the innovative da Vinci surgical system which uses breakthrough technology to provide a minimally invasive alternative for many complex surgical procedures.” Besides being a best place for your medical care, Boulder Community Hospital has also been recognized as the Best Local Employer. “Our employees often comment that their coworkers are what make BCH such a special place to work,” says Janice Blankenship, director of human services. “We have over 300 employees who have worked here more than 15 years. This speaks to the loyalty and commitment our employees have toward the hospital and toward each other.” The hospital is truly a family of individuals who support each other. Many employees contribute each year to a special fund that is used to assist coworkers who are facing a financial crisis or emergency. The fund has provided more than $10,000 to employees who were affected by last year’s Four Mile Fire. Employees enjoy opportunities for continued professional growth and development, with a hospital tuition reimbursement program as well as scholarships provided by the hospital Auxiliary. And of course, there are times to get together and just have fun, with special activities like going to a Rockies games or seeing a performance at Boulder’s Dinner Theater.

Are you tired of misplacing your glasses, or that daily fuss with your contact lenses? Maybe you should consider the laser solution. But how to choose the right place? When it comes to your vision care, you really only want the best. Beyer Laser Center wins our vote once again for their personal approach to providing the latest in Lasik technology and services. “Our patients appreciate our extensive experience and warm, comfortable environment,” medical director Craig Beyer says. “Every eyeball is different, so all of our services are customized to the patient. A lot of people wonder if they are candidates for Lasik surgery. They may have heard they are too young, or too old, or that they can’t have laser surgery because of astigmatism. We offer a free, no-obligation consultation visit to see if it’s right for you. And if it turns out that you’re not, we’ll provide you with free contact lenses for a year.” We love the easy access to their office with lots of parking, and the fact that Dr. Beyer is one of the most experienced laser eye surgeons in the country, with professional athletes and a celebrity or two among his fans.

BEST PLACE FOR WORSHIP

Flatirons Community Church

355 W South Boulder Road, Lafayette, 303.664.5524, www.flatironschurch.com

In our daily, hectic lives, we often forget to take some time out for contemplation, thankfulness and worship. We might experience our epiphanies on a street corner or out on a hiking trail. But for many in Boulder County, the most popular place to join with others in worship is Flatirons Community Church, a large congregation that just moved in April to their new facility, a repurposed “big box store” at the east end of Lafayette. The new building is “only a vehicle to build relationships... because that’s what it’s always been about.” Flatirons Community Church offers something for all ages and situations, from the Kids Ministry to middle and high school, college, singles and couples. Special workshops and events include a Girls Night Out, men’s and women’s retreats, grief counseling, and Sh!ft (“A Better Way to Do Life”). The church is involved in community outreach through several programs such as the Sister Carmen Community Center, Heritage House Ministries and Habitat for Humanity. At Flatirons, they “teach Biblical truths to help people find a better way to do life with Jesus Christ. Our desire is for you to experience the love God has for you no matter where you are in your spiritual journey.”

BEST NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION

Eco-Cycle

5030 Pearl Street, Boulder, 303.444.6634, www.ecocycle.org

We’re serious about our recycling in Boulder County. And thanks to our friends at Eco-Cycle, the paper, cardboard, paperboard, aluminum cans, plastic containers and glass bottles that we use are easily returned to the recyle stream to become everything from carpet to jewelry to…uh…new paper, cans, and bottles. “We frequently hear that Eco-Cycle creates a quality of life that defines our community,” says communications director Marti Matsch. “We create the opportunity for residents, businesses and schools to live according to their environmental values in a way that is not typically possible in other places around the world. It makes people feel proud of where they live.” Eco-Cycle was formed in 1976 as a volunteer-based organization and is now one of the largest and oldest non-profit recyclers in the nation. The Boulder County Recycling Center and the Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM) both opened in 1991. “Our latest program is a Junk Mail service, sponsored by Eco-Cycle to allow all residents and businesses in Boulder County to get off junk mail at no cost,” Matsch explains. “People can sign up at www.ecocycle.org/junkmail. Our goal is to make Boulder County the most junk-mail free community in the world!”

BEST PET GROOMING SERVICE

The Hydrant

2900 Valmont Rd. # E2, Boulder, 720.204.3627, www.thehydrantboulder.com

If wags were wishes, every lucky dog in Boulder County would get to visit The Hydrant in Boulder, the premier pet grooming shop “for pets of distinction and owners who care.” Since 1970, The Hydrant has been the locally-owned place to bring your canine friends for some special attention. Whether your best friend is a bull mastiff or a teacup poodle, every dog is Top Dog at The Hydrant. “Our full grooming service includes an invigorating bath, and we clean the dog’s nails and ears. Then we give your dog a haircut and finish with conditioner,” says Elisha Martinez, manager at The Hydrant. “Our main goal is to keep your dogs clean and happy.” Groomers Valerie Brandner and Lori Marcin are like “super stylists for dogs.” The most popular service is the full spa package, complete with a facial, aromatherapy, paw treatment and special cologne. At The Hydrant, dogs come first – but we like their great customer service, too.

Oh, to be a lucky dog spending the day at Cottonwood Kennels! First, there’s the friendly staff, dedicated to caring for your canine’s every need. Then there are all the exciting adventures to be had, like playing with the other dogs or walking in the pasture and investigating all the sights and sounds. There’s always good food and a quiet climate-controlled place to retire for a rest. It’s like visiting a very cool farm. “Our staff of 32 caretakers works very hard. We put a lot of energy into hiring the best people who have a real love for pets, then we train them well,” says co-owner Tom Bonfili. “Our customers appreciate the full, customized care their pets receive here. Dogs who can play together with others enjoy socializing in the group yard. We take the older dogs or dogs that need more one-on-one attention on private accompanied walks where there are lots of stimulating things to keep them interested.” Bonfili, who has been at Cottonwood Kennels since the mid-70s, says that some of their pet owners remember coming in with their parents. Cats get their own special place up on the second floor, where there are lots of plants, windows and space to hang out. “We have a rocking chair up there, and we like to give the cats plenty of snuggle time.”

Your pet deserves the best, whether you have a cat that’s under the weather or a dog that just needs regular preventive care. That’s why so many Boulder County pet owners take their animals to Broadway Animal Hospital, the place for “exceptional care for your pets, and peace of mind for you.” Doctors Lee Woods, DVM and Patrick Kalenzi, DVM and their friendly staff provide immunizations, nutritional counseling, dental care, orthopedic surgery, radiology, hospice and pain management services, all while ensuring your pets’ comfort and dignity. There’s even a certified canine massage therapist on the staff to help post-surgery or aged and chronically ill dogs feel better and thrive. “We love animals and are compassionate in their treatment,” says Mallory Bednorz, client relations manager. “Our staff has been here a long time and they build a relationship and rapport with our clients while providing the highest standard of veterinarian care. We are accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association; only 15 percent of animal hospitals nationwide receive this accreditation. Our doctors will even make house calls if that is needed to provide your pet with the best.”

Rocky Mountain Day Camp

3351 South Indiana St., Superior, 303.495.5204, www.rockymtndaycamp.com

What do you do when you can’t find the right summer camp for your children? For Holly and David Hansburg, both professional educators, the answer was to start their own camp. With activities like archery, music, drama, arts & crafts, a climbing wall and much more, every day offers a new adventure. “Our campers like that every day is different and really fun!” says David Hansburg. “The campers love all of the crazy special events and activities we do every summer.” Boys and girls participate in the daily age appropriate events separately, developing confidence while allowing them the space to participate without inhibitions. “Our parents love RMDC because their campers love coming to camp every single day! Parents also like our amazing staff because they genuinely enjoy working with campers and being at camp each day. We constantly get comments about how enthusiastic and energetic our counselors are with all of the campers all of the time. This is why we are the best.....we have the best staff. The most satisfying part of running a great summer camp is watching our campers gain confidence and self-esteem that lasts a lifetime!”

Paul Roach, RE/MAX of Boulder

2425 Canyon Blvd, Suite 110, Boulder, 303.441.5693, www.pauljroach.com

If numbers underscore a real estate agent’s reputation, then Paul Roach’s $200 million in volume sales in the last 25 years should paint a picture of this RE/MAX agent’s success in the Boulder community. While he’s taking his skills beyond Colorado as a volunteer director of an orphanage in Chiapas, Mexico, he attributes his local achievement to three simple things: trust, knowledge and communication. Roach also counts himself lucky to be a part of a truly dedicated team of agents. RE/MAX of Boulder has been the number one producing single RE/MAX office in the United States for the last three years in a row. “Boulder is always on everyone’s map when they think of relocating,” he says. “Where else in the U.S. can you find a university town with a cosmopolitan feel, incredible weather, multiple recreational opportunities and a job that actually pays?” The secrets to his trade are not that complicated. He advises buyers: Be patient. Get good advice. Follow the advice. For sellers: Be patient. Get good advice. Don’t compromise.

Peggy Arnold

Program Coordinator for PrestigePLUS at Longmont United Hospital

Peggy Arnold, program coordinator for the PrestigePLUS program at Longmont United Hospital, says her job is all about community and networking. “PrestigePLUS is Longmont United Hospital’s senior wellness program, established 20 years ago,” she explains. “We are committed to actively promoting and sustaining a community in which we all age well - and we are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of older adults. I meet with older adults daily to hear their stories and support them with the resources they need. Fortunately, we have a community that is rich in resources, so it’s often just a matter of pointing folks in the right direction.” These resources can include wellness activities and educational programs, clinics, consulting, health screenings and self-care strategies. PrestigePLUS has partnered with other community groups - businesses, schools, community agencies/ programs, faith groups, media, physicians, for example, to enhance the reach and effectiveness of the program. Arnold says that these are “exciting and challenging times, when we are more connected than ever before, and yet can still feel isolated. The time is ripe for innovative ideas for creating meaningful community!” We think she’s “The Best” but she is pretty humble about the recognition. “We are ALL Community Champions and equally deserving of this award!” she says.

Classic Facets Antique Jewelry

942 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.938.8851, www.classicfacets.com

After 26 years in business, Classic Facets has figured out the how to sell the fascinating niche of antique and vintage jewelry. Customers can browse some 20,000 pieces from Classic Facets’ diverse consignors around the country—and the world. In addition to fine jewelry from the 1700s through the 1950s, ranging from authenticated antique diamond engagement rings to Art Deco pieces, the store has started selling contemporary classics. “I am mentoring two local women who design and hand-make jewelry,” says owner Mikki Rainey. “It is very affordable, which mimics times past. Who knew 100 years ago that some plastic jewelry would be worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars today (i.e. Bakelite)?” Rainey’s interest in the history of jewelry, the hows and whys people wore certain designs, is infectious, but most importantly, she says, the purpose of jewelry is to make you feel good! But to ensure that each purchase is more than just a good feeling, Classic Facets’ staffs a GIA Gemologist, who is also a Certified Appraiser, another expert training to become a Graduate Gemologist and one of the only 123 Certified Master Bench Jewelers in the country to repair antique jewelry.

Bedell & Company

The oldest and one of the most trusted bike shops in town, locally owned and operated University Bikes fits the Boulder community like a perfectly worn saddle. The shop stocks a variety of bikes—rentals, commuters, kids, mountain and road persuasions—as well as a smart staff that “lives and breathes cycling,” according to general manager Lester Binegar, and helps customers find just the right fit. This year UBikes, as it’s affectionately coined, is expanding its clothing, MTB and commuter bike selection. “We cater to the 90 percent of the cycling public and, most of all, we love where we live: the friendliest, happiest, healthiest place on Earth,” says Binegar. There’s just something special that comes with running a bike shop in Boulder—and it usually has a way of rubbing off on customers. Binegar’s favorite things about managing University Bikes? “Selling a kid a bike for their birthday, watching a novice cycling customer become addicted to cycling and knowing what we do is something good for the planet.”

BEST ANTIQUE DEALER AND BEST CONSIGNMENT STORE AND BEST HOME FURNISHINGS

The Amazing Garage Sale

4919 North Broadway, Boulder, 303.447.0417, www.theamazinggaragesale.com

It’s like an estate sale that never ends. The Amazing Garage Sale is open seven days a week, and owner Judi Lesta has been keeping the ever-changing marketplace alive for 12 years. “We’re always adding Danish modern and mid-century furniture plus lots of estate jewelry,” says Lesta, who also scouts retro-cool home décor, art and other treasures and stores them in her five warehouses. Her work is consuming, but Lesta’s knowledgeable and passionate presence is part of the experience at this truly one-of-a-kind paradise for creative shoppers. “Besides working 24/7, I am dedicated. It’s my life,” says Lesta. “I offer extreme personal service. Customers are friends and they know that.” The shop is intended and staged to sell carefully selected items at affordable prices. “We don’t take in things that clutter the store. We don’t take consignments that we mark down and eventually give back to the consignor or donate,” explains Lesta. “We only take in things we know will sell—and pretty fast.” She stresses that The Amazing Garage Sale is not a thrift store. And that concept works perfectly for the Boulder market. “People want a bargain and they also want quality,” says Lesta. Buying recycled wares is another important attraction at this endless estate sale. And for honest customers who are in love with an Eames chair that they know will be snatched up, but can’t afford on the spot, Lesta allows tabs. She says, “We don’t charge any interest. We basically trust them on a payment schedule that suits their needs.”

You know the story: The name Grandrabbit started when some children name their mother Rabbit. When her children had children, she became Grandrabbit. Today, owner Lynne Milot deserves the credit for turning this circa 1977 toy shop into the amazing multi-location wonderland it is today. She stocks just the right assortment of high-quality, go-to-your-happy-place toys, games and accessories, while securing employees who know all about them. “Our books remain very popular,” says Milot. “We carry really inspirational and value-based books and we get a lot of positive feedback about our staff’s knowledge of authors and titles.” Loads of fun new and retro gizmos and gadgets—those little items perfect for parties—are also traditionally hot sellers. And, of course, well-informed locals enjoy Grandrabbit’s selection of green toys, now more competitively priced than ever, says Milot.

1107 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.447.2074, www.boulderbookstore.com,

Browsing at the downtown Boulder Book Store is a storied tradition. Since 1973, this meandering, 20,000-square-foot shop has grown to some 100,000 titles, including a stellar local lineup of authors and quality used books to bestsellers and well-organized topical reads. Now the official bookstore for Naropa University, Boulder Bookstore also sells textbooks, Naropa bags, T-shirts and sweatshirts. In fact, this maze-like shop is filled with accoutrements around each corner: Out of Print Tee Shirts (classic book cover prints), scarves, socks, water bottles, mugs, lunch boxes and toys. Inspiring, big-name author readings—from Deepak Chopra to Chelsea Handler—happen regularly and customer service comes standard. “We do everything we can to make sure our customers have a great experience when they are at our store, which is something online retailers cannot offer,” says Stephanie Schindhelm, Promotions and Marketing Manager. “We try to make a personal connection with our community through our events, our Readers Guild Program and our staff recommendations.”

Think Western art—without the cowboys and Indians. More like glorious landscapes of the West, still life, antique maps, vintage botanical prints, even contemporary abstracts: That’s Mary Williams Fine Art. “I am bursting with pride about the quality of my painters,” says owner Mary Williams. “I’m constantly improving the quality of work I show, and we are at a beautiful pinnacle with nationally famous people.” In addition to a showcasing a large range of Western works—at the same location for 16 years and on Williams’ famous national “road shows”—the gallery is also known for its high-quality art framing business. While Williams admits it’s the most difficult time in her 30-year art-selling history, she exudes an insatiable commitment to her craft. “When we encourage people about buying art, we tell them it’s an investment in their surroundings,” she says. “It makes you feel better. That’s its most important function: to be beautiful and to make you feel like there’s hope.” And until Boulderites feel better about their futures, we’ll manage, Williams says with the guts that keeps her gallery afloat year after year.

The question is really what can’t you find at Michaels? It’s an art supply store, a hobby mecca, crafter’s connection and gift bonanza all wrapped into one big box. With the “Do-It-Yourself” craze in full swing, Michaels is more popular than ever. And that’s good, because there’s practically one on every corner now. Scrapbookers will find more photo and paper trappings than they could dream up, with new ones seemingly popping onto shelves daily. Weekly coupons keep Michael competitive and customers content. And employees always seem to know right where that handy Triple Thick glaze resides (the one that turns seashore rocks into works of art), along with the thousands of other crafty-cool treasures that can turn anyone with a little imagination into a DYI genius.

You might know about Verlo’s high-quality, locally crafted, made-to-order mattresses. But “many people may not know Verlo was the originator in using the most eco-friendly materials in our manufacturing process—castor bean oilbased foam, natural talalay latex foam, bamboo, cashmere, certified pine, organic cotton and U.S steel,” says owner Dick Sumerfield. “Our ultimate goal is to provide the healthiest sleeping environment possible for our customers.” New at Verlo is the Cool Contour Gel bed, a pressure-relieving material that sleeps cool and offers superior weight distribution. Verlo’s repeat customers sleep better knowing they own a comfort- and support-tested mattress with a 20-year, nonprorated guaranteed. “And you can sleep easy knowing that by buying directly from the manufacturer you saved 40 to 60 percent over the national brands,” says Sumerfield. “Verlo is the only mattress manufacturer in Boulder County. Everyone else is just a retailer.” In keeping with his local focus, Sumerfield serves on the Boulder Valley YMCA board, volunteers in the schools, puts on an annual kid’s triathlon and supports many community causes. “Giving back in order to help build a strong and vibrant community is what it’s all about!” he says.

Seems costumes never go out of style. There’s always Halloween, but how does a dress-up shop stay in business year-round? The Ritz has always been and continues to be Boulder’s “party before the party.” Boulder County residents and business can certainly throw some swanky soirees. And then there’s those crazy college students who always seem in search of the best toga or hippie getup. In fact, there seems to be a steady flow of people just waiting to don both traditional and trendy costumes, plus the wigs, boas, sunglasses, makeup and accessories to go with them. Nutting carries it all—from the surreal Mad Hatter outfit to retro-realistic Mad Men-inspired attire.

BEST MEN’S CLOTHING STORE

The Regiment Shop

2425 Canyon Blvd., #F, Boulder, 303.443.2713, www.theregimentshops.com

The Regiment, a traditional menswear shop, has been just going to show us what good customer service does for business since 1959. Gary Cartwright, who co-owns the store with Steve Jacobs, says customer relationships are everything at The Regiment. “All stores have product, but it comes down to how much we enjoy our customers,” he says. “We like fashion and the changes that come with it, but we really enjoy the relationships that we’ve built and want to create new ones.” Speaking of changes, things appear to be going a little more traditional in terms of looks and patterns this fall, says Cartwright. Hot colors are purple and orange, and cashmere sweaters, scarves and sport coats will sell well. The Regiment stocks everything from accessories to suits by top brands Robert Talbott, Tommy Bahama Denim, Lone Pine, Jack Victor and Hickey Freeman. But it’s the extras like onsite tailoring, color analysis, a made-to-measure program for suits and sport coats, and free gift wrapping that make each purchase feel a little more special at The Regiment.

Pedestrian Shops

Pedestrian Shops, which remains firmly rooted on the ultimate pedestrian-strolling avenue, is so much more than a shoe store. It’s a Boulder institution. With locals logging way more than the average human on some of the planet’s best trails, footwear is essential here. But at Pedestrian Shops, this word also comes in two other forms: footware and footwhere. This nifty little slogan, explains president and founder Richard Polk, covers Pedestrian Shops’ inventory perfectly: the things you put on your feet, the accessories galore related to walking, and the maps and books that send you in the right direction. Think hiking shoes, vegan sandals, high-tech socks, BackJoy orthotics, pedometers, handbags, walking sticks and Boulder County maps, to name a few. When it comes to shoes—and lately much less of them with the barefoot movement—Polk says the shop and knowledgeable long-time employees are still “all about comfort. Wellness is part of the story and people here are just more conscious about how they feel.”

Aspen Eyewear

They say the eyes are a window to the soul. So how could you trust something so precious to just any eye care store? Boulder County has counted on Aspen Eyewear, a third-generation, family-owned and operated business, to keep them seeing clearly or over 25 years. Using the industry’s top-of-the-line equipment and staffing only board-certified opticians, Aspen Eyewear offers eye examinations, prescriptions, contact lenses, fashionable yet functional eyewear and glasses repair. “Especially now when people may not be able to afford new glasses, we pretty much fix anything,” says Manger Jennifer Ebner. “If my dad can’t repair it, it can’t done.” New progressive Nikon lenses and extremely lightweight, durable and hip styles are all the rage at Aspen. The store also maintains an in-house lens finishing service, which means new orders can be ready in just a few days. But there’s no rushing the right choice in eyewear at Aspen. It’s the store’s unofficial policy to spend more than hour to help each customer outfitted in the most appropriate eyewear. “We’re not a fast-food optical shop,” says Ebner.

If anyone knows quality flooring its Atlas Flooring owner Leister Bowling, who started working a the local store when he was just 15. In addition to stocking boatloads of carpet for competitive pricing, the shop carries wood flooring, accessory flooring material, and now cabinetry for residential or commercial setups. The kitchen department is the latest growth area for Atlas. “We are proud to offer the best price around on cabinets, from fully custom frameless cabinets to face frame production cabinets,” says Bowling. “We have a two-week lead time and the best prices in town.” Bowling is not shy about his pricing power. “We have one of the largest stock inventories in the state. With the quantity of flooring we buy and keep in stock, we are able to negotiate our prices to sometimes half of what our competition is selling a similar product for.” Most Atlas customers are repeats or word-of-mouth referrals. That’s because Atlas knows the secret of any service business: “Keeping people happy keeps people coming back,” says Bowling.

BEST TREE NURSERY

The Tree Farm

11868 Mineral Road, Longmont, 303.652.2961, www.thetreefarmlongmont.com

THANK YOU!!!

In Colorado, new trees and shrubs won’t grow without a little TLC. And the over 60-person staff at The Tree Farm in Longmont can help even wannabe green thumbs find planting success in this challenging landscape and climate. “You have to baby it in the beginning,” says manager Mike Gittleson. “It’s hard to overwater in this climate. Keep it moist whatever that takes.” At least for the first two to three years, anyway. The Tree Farm sells lots of trees shade trees, roses, flowering shrubs and over 1,000 types of perennials. And now’s a good time to invest in beautifying your outdoor environment: The Tree Farm’s annual fall sale is on. But while great deals are available, Gittleson openly admits that The Tree Farm has never been price-driven. “You can get things cheaper someplace else, but you have generally inferior service and quality,” he says. The Tree Farm ensures those two crucial elements are covered through an inverse staffing arrangement. Instead of putting most people in sales, The Tree Farm keeps a majority of employees in the nursery, because “plants are the most important part of our business,” says Gittleson.

Sturtz & Copeland, a floral, garden and plant shop helping Boulder County grow well since 1929, may be as well known for its people as its plants. “I have the best employees and the best customers in Boulder, and that makes my job fun, exciting and wonderful,” says owner Carol Riggs. General Manager Connie Smith is one of those shining stars. She doesn’t just sell flowers, she blogs about timely and useful garden tips throughout the year from the company website. She also heads up the day-to-day management of this full-service shop and a staff with an impressive collection of knowledge of all things botanical. “We hire people with experience because there is very little that is black and white in the plant/gardening/design world,” says Smith. “The nuanced information we give makes all the difference. We love it when our customers return and say they can always count on us, whether it’s with help designing the best arrangement, choosing the right plant or solving a pesky bug problem.” Sturtz & Copeland’s best sellers are from a full line of organic gardening and houseplant products. “Ladybugs, of all things, continue to sell well,” says Smith. “Fairy garden items continue to be popular, and our colorful and extensive ceramic pot selection consistently impresses our shoppers.” Cut roses in a wide selection of original colors are always a premium. Sturtz & Copeland also now consistently offers lots of gardening and floral design classes with easy registration right through the website.

Liquor Mart

1750 15th Street, Boulder, CO 80302, 303.449.3374, www.liquormart.com

Liquor Mart has been serving the Boulder community as the largest liquor store in Boulder County since they opened in 1968. Tom Lacey, a CU graduate, founded the store and pioneered the idea of filling the shelves with products so that the customers could be more involved in their purchases, just like a grocery store. “While other liquor store’s made the competition their business, Tom made pleasing the customer his business,” according to liquormart.com. Although Tom has passed away, his philosophy has been maintained through the years and brought the store to its current location of 32,000 square feet. The store has a vast selection of wines, spirits and beer, which continue to change with Boulder’s tastes. The store offers clubs for everyone’s flavors. The Single Malt Scotch club and the Eco Friendly Wine club are just a few of the clubs customers can purchase for themselves or give as a gift to friends and family members. If stopping by the store seems overwhelming, shop online. On the store’s website, customers can choose to have the products delivered or pick them up when it’s convenient.

Not only does the store make sure that the staff is well trained on the growing industry, but it wants to guarantee that the customers have an enjoyable and pleasant experience while at the store. The friendly staff will cater to whatever growing needs a customer may have. “Many people come into the store just to talk and gather information,” says Fields. Whether customers are currently gardening or are entertaining aspirations to grow inside or outside, Family Hydroponics has the products and advice to make it a success. With its motto of putting “passion in your soles,” Boulder Running Company is the clear choice of the Runnerati. Whether you’re racing, hiking, walking, running, training or just looking for some comfy shoes, BRC has you covered. The company is renowned for its video gait analysis that helps determine the best shoe for your unique foot and stride. Runners swear by it. Putting the best shoes on your feet – footwear that actually affects your good health – would be a daunting undertaking but for BRC’s whip-smart staff. And shoes are just the start. All-season apparel and accessories abound for women, men and kids. Yet, stocking great products is not what sets Boulder Running Company apart. Owner Mark Plaatjes explains, “The product doesn’t make the business. You can get many of the same products that we have somewhere else. We differentiate ourselves by taking care of the people who walk through the door. In some cases, two and three generations of families come to us. We know them.” It is an emphasis on community that creates such longstanding trust with customers. “Boulder County Gold is an important honor for us because it tells us the community thinks we’re doing a good job. We sponsor many local events because we believe in the investment in community,” says Plaatjes.

BEST SPORTING GOOD STORE AND BEST OUTDOOR RECREATION STORE

REI

1789 28th St., Boulder, 303.583.9970, www.rei.com

REI is shining its two golds in the Best Sporting Goods Store and Best Outdoor Recreation Store categories. That’s no surprise, really, because REI will outfit you for camping or climbing, for biking or snowboarding, for cycling or skiing. With a full service bike shop, outdoor equipment rentals, even a community center, it’s hard to pin down one’s favorite thing about REI. “Our staff have fun, they’re passionate about what they do, and hopefully that comes through to the customer,” says asst. manager Chris Dangerfield. A trip to REI for ski boots may result in a backpacking class, booking a rafting trip, or just great conversation with fellow outdoors enthusiasts. (Check out REI’s website to see its many events and courses.) REI is of course a co-op that has been around since 1938, but how does it fit with the myriad outdoorsy stores in our area? “There are a lot of great players in the local outdoors scene, and plenty of places to find what you need, “Dangerfield reasons. “Our stance is to offer a very personal approach to customer service, to connect at a community level. Our outreach coordinator does a great job of setting up events that foster inclusiveness.” Impressed? It gets better: REI is naturally committed to all things green, and the store itself was built to top green standards for commercial interiors.

BEST PLACE TO BUY WINDOWS (WITHIN COLORADO)

SolarGlass Window & Door

Innovative Openings Inc.

7123 Arapahoe Rd., Boulder, 303.442.4277, www.solarglass.com

1672 30th St., Boulder, 303.449.6465, 667 S. Pierce Ave, Louisville, 303.665.1305 www.innovativeopenings.com

What is so innovative about Innovative Openings Inc? Let us count the ways! From a small business focusing on energy-conserving products in 1980, the company has grown into the largest supplier of window coverings in the Colorado market. Let their friendly experts assist you in selecting solar and blackout shades (motorized ones, too), blinds and shades, draperies and valances, shutters and even exterior window and patio covers. Innovative Openings has been selected by Hunter Douglas to be part of a national network of Dealer Service Centers to protect the Hunter Douglas Brand nationally by offering a consistent warranty repair process for retailers and consumers. “We’ve been doing this for a long time. We started in Boulder 31 years ago. Our customer service philosophy is simple: Work hard to provide the customer with excellent service,” says co-owner Rick Pease. Across the Front Range, in most towns from Castle Rock to Ft. Collins, Innovative Openings simplifies your day by coming to you to measure and design. And the company’s expert installers are not contract workers; they’re Innovative Openings staff. Hot tip: They will even repair products they did not install. Check out Innovative Openings’ recently opened service center in Louisville at 667 S. Pierce Avenue.

Howard’s Draperies

Solar heat gain? E-glass? Wood or aluminum frames? Argh! You need new or replacement windows, but the maze of options is giving you a headache, right? The cure is a call to SolarGlass, with whom window-shopping means something special. By the time SolarGlass has guided you through the maze, you’ll almost be an expert yourself. That’s because since 1981, SolarGlass has fulfilled its mission of turning customers into educated consumers. It’s not just windows, of course. SolarGlass installs doors and skylights, too. “We have awfully special people in this company. There’s longevity. We managed to survive the economic downturn without losing a single person, which means our excellent service, commitment and talent are intact,” says proud owner Gwenael Hagan. “We’re a family, not just a business.” SolarGlass staff will ensure that you understand pricing and products. A visit to the showroom, featuring Marvin products, is an exercise in peace of mind. Also see their handy online window replacement guide. With each window sold, SolarGlass makes a promise to care for the customer’s home. “It’s an honor to win this award. The highest compliment someone could give me is to rave about a member of our team who delighted them. The power of word of mouth cannot be bought,” says Hagan.

BEST PLACE TO BUY CUSTOM COUNTERTOPS

Moros Fabrication

3871 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.473.0111, www.morosfabrication.com

If you can dream it, Moros can fabricate it! The company has been masterfully making custom granite and marble counters right here in Boulder since 2000. Whether it’s a new build or a facelift for your kitchen, bathroom or bar, Moros Fabrication will make it a thing of beauty. It doesn’t matter if you’re a weekend fixer-upper or an architect. Make that appointment for a design consultation and free in-home estimate. Granite, marble, natural stone, kitchen countertops, bathroom vanity tops, tub decks, shower and fireplace surrounds and bar tops are all on the table, so to speak. Owner Marty Moros estimates about 10% of his current business is in new builds while remodels are on the rise. “We pay attention to what customers want. So much of our business is in referrals from friends and family. If we get that, we know we’re doing something right,” says Moros. “We’re family owned and dedicated to customer service. It’s that simple.” Moros’ website has a very cool feature – 3-D edge profiles that show you what a variety of edges, colors and patterns look like from several angles. (Bet your imagination can’t do that!) You’ll be amazed at Moros’ selection of natural stone, quartz and eco-friendly products and soapstone.

BEST SHOPPING DESTINATION (WITHIN COLORADO)

Pearl Street Mall

Pearl Street, Boulder, 303.449.3774, www.boulderdowntown.com,

Strolling along Pearl Street, ice cream in hand, watching a jazz trio (maybe some juggling), grabbing the kids a handmade puzzle at a boutique toy store, then feasting on a scrumptious pizza, sitting outdoors, watching the sun go down … this might just be the quintessential Boulder shopping day. Pearl Street takes all kinds and offers a wealth of fantastic shopping options. Did you know that 85 percent of the businesses on this famed walkabout are locally owned? “If you’ve visited Pearl Street, you know it’s an amazing place. Many people in fact refer to it as the ‘living room’ of Boulder. You come hang out, browse, watch people, eat, drink and shop. It’s got whatever you want to do,” says Boulder Downtown executive director Sean Maher. Chances are you have a specific Pearl Street memory, whether it’s seeing a marriage proposal, a sword swallower, finding that perfect pair of cowboy boots, or enjoying the best chai of your life. “Whether you’re 3 or 93, you’ll be entertained on Pearl Street,” says Maher. “That’s one of the secrets to Pearl Street: something for everyone.” Like many retail hubs, the Mall suffered in 2009, saw a pick up in 2010 trade and is up substantially in ’11. Maher reasons that the abundance of locally owned shops and restaurants is what keeps people coming back. And Boulder seems to agree.
