PREPARING FOR SummerCAMP
BY DARREN THORNBERRY RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Are you a parent or guardian overwhelmed by the choices and seemingly endless to-do list before sending your children to camp? We reached out to some local camp directors for tips on how to plan well and have a great experience — all before the kids even walk out the door!
BE REALISTIC & STRATEGIC
Think practically. If you work full time, you need a camp that doesn’t take you too far from your commute and provides a full day of care. If you have a lot of flexibility in your budget, location or hours, look for half-day camps or specialized camps in your community and beyond. - Andra Coberly Webster, Executive Director of Communications, YMCA of Northern Colorado
Remember who you are looking for. Don’t get caught up in hype around this program or that one. It’s for your child, and they have their own preferences and likes. Too often, parents don’t even allow their campers any input when choosing a camp and then are surprised when it doesn’t work out.
- Drew Wancket, Virtual Director, Steve & Kate’s Camp
REGISTRATION BEST PRACTICES
Know the registration opening dates and know which camps fill up fast. Take advantage of any early promotion periods to save a little money. Have medical forms and information ready during registration, though you may not need it right away Pay attention to the emails that camps send out; that’s how most camps communicate. - Andra Coberly Webster
Don’t feel a rush to register early. Programs will try to pressure you because they often have goals that they need to
meet. Look for programs that take registration on an ongoing basis since that is a sign that they are not tying the camp to certain financial thresholds on their side. - Drew Wancket
BEST FINANCIAL VALUE
Does the fee cover meals, snacks, supplies, or special activities? Additionally, consider any sibling discounts, early registration deals, or scholarship opportunities the camp may offer. A slightly higher upfront cost may be worth it if the camp offers a robust, enriching program that aligns with your child’s interests. - Holly Hansburg, owner of Rocky Mountain Day Camp
Camp is an investment in your child. What they experience at camp and the friends they make will last a lifetime. While they are only at camp for a short time, the environment fosters stronger relationships as well as memories. Most camp experiences help children grow in independence and confidence. Hands down one of the best investments you

ATTEND A CAMP EXPO?
I always advise parents to attend a camp expo since you can do side-by-side comparisons of programs. Even though I work for a camp, I want families to talk to everyone so that when they get to me, they know what we can offer that is different.Drew Wancket
Camp expos are a great way to get familiar with your summer options, especially if this is your first year looking for camps or you are new to the area. You can ask questions, see the variety of camps, discover options for your specific needs and talk to the staff face to face. - Andra Coberly Webster
HELPING WITH SEPARATION ANXIETY
Encourage your kiddo to talk about their feelings. Help them understand that it’s totally normal to feel nervous. You also want to encourage kids to express a wide range of emotions; for some kids, they may fixate on fear or anxiety, but remind them that it’s going to be fun to see their buddies or to ride on a bus or to go swimming You don’t want to try to change how they feel, but just remind them that there are also positive emotions inside them. - Andra Coberly Webster
Preparation is key to easing camp jitters, especially for firsttimers. Start by talking positively about camp and highlighting the fun activities they’ll get to do. If possible, visit the camp beforehand to help your camper feel more familiar with the environment. For campers experiencing separation anxiety, send them to camp on the first day with a small comfort item, like a family photo, and assure them that feeling a little nervous is normal - Holly Hansburg
IS THE CAMP DIRECTOR AVAILABLE?
You should expect to be able to contact the director directly. I think it is very important that parents have this chance because they are entrusting me with their children, which is something we do not take lightly at Blue Mountain Ranch. - Tim Graf Families should absolutely expect to have direct access to the camp director. A responsive and approachable camp team
is a good indicator of a well-run program. You should be encouraged to reach out with any questions, as it’s important to feel confident and comfortable with your choice. - Holly Hansburg

Fun Ways to Keep Kids Occupied Over Summer Break
“Summer is an opportunity to nurture every aspect of a child’s development through creativity, discovery and skill-building.”
BY JULIE KAILUS RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
From day camps to boredom busters, there are plenty of ways to keep your kids involved and engaged all summer long. We consulted experts from schools around the county on ways youngsters can explore, create and grow outside the classroom.
BUST THAT BOREDOM
Matt Jenkins, communications manager for Community Schools at BVSD, says that kids can keep summer boredom at bay with activities that are as educational as they are fun. For example, BVSD’s Never Bummer Summer camps offer half- or full-day, oneweek camps that let children explore outside, cook, dabble in engineering or learn new sports. “Kids will make lasting memories and spark curiosities all summer long,” he says.
Keeping summer exciting can start at home with a boredom-buster jar. “Fill it with fun ideas written on popsicle sticks to keep kids engaged,” says Cara Johnson-Bader, vice president of marketing and parent experiences at New Horizon
Academy. Activities should cater to different interests and learning opportunities indoors and out. Examples include scavenger hunts, STEAM challenges, crafts and sensory play ideas. “This simple tool is a great way to encourage children to explore new interests, develop new skills, and stay active,” she says.
New Horizon also knows how to keep things interesting, with preschool and school-age summer camps covering all kinds of topics: outdoor adventure, gardening, insects, beehives, rainforests, underwater worlds, Earth-saving and more.
UN-STRUCTURE, DABBLE & CREATE
“Summer is an opportunity to nurture every aspect of a child’s development through creativity, discovery and skill-building,” says Meg Gardner, school director of Shining Mountain Waldorf School. She suggests encouraging outdoor exploration, gardening and family reading to spark curiosity and strengthen connections.
“Younger students flourish with unstructured play and hands-on activities like cooking, which integrates math and problem-solving,” she says. “Older students can pursue their interests through summer jobs, capstone projects or leadership roles at camps.” Other positive summer focuses could include music practice, reading challenges, outdoor camping, and reconnecting with grandparents, extended family, and friends.
DEVELOP
CONFIDENCE & UNCOVER TALENTS
According to Sharon Reiter, director of auxiliary and experiential programming at Boulder Country Day School, summer is a great time to encourage kids to develop confidence in exploring new interests. BCDS offers specialized camps

in a wide range of interest areas, from sports and outdoor adventures to arts and technology, that may not be available during the regular school year.
“These camps provide a great opportunity for parents to encourage their children to step outside their comfort zones in a safe and supportive setting without the fear of failure or grades,” she says. “Through specialized programming and enthusiastic instructors, summer camps have the potential to uncover hidden talents or passions.”
Other local schools offering summer programming include Bixby and Friends. Bixby School’s play-based summer camp features plenty of open-ended creative pursuits and outdoor time on a safe and beautiful 3-acre campus, open to all kindergarten through sixth-graders.
Friends School supports a variety of summer break options, from preschool backyard camp to classes in theater, cooking, science, art, sports and more for students ages preschool to 14 years.

Inspiring kids through arts, music and imagination
BY ADAM GOLDSTEIN RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Summer camps don’t have to only be about archery, swimming and survival skills.
For Kindergarten through 12th grade students, the summer is an ideal opportunity for growth in all phases of their lives. Sure, the warmer months are a wonderful chance to get physically active, and traditional summer camps offer plenty of chances to get out into nature. Still, the summer is also a great time to focus on a child’s creative development. Time off from school can mean honing one’s artistic skills, whether in music, performing arts, drawing, painting or other forms of expression.
Boulder County is home to several camps that cater to children’s creative side. These camps are the perfect option for kids who want to use their time off from school to tap into their inner muse while enjoying the warm temperatures and outdoor splendor of Colorado
The Spark Performing Arts organization in Boulder (thesparkcreates. org) offers a number of summer options for aspiring actors, performers and tech crews, from theater intensives to art excursions to events designed specifically for backstage crews. This summer at the Spark, for example, will include talk-back events at the Little Theatre of the Rockies in June, a “dramaturgy quest ” tied to a production of “Pride and Prejudice” in July and a backstage tour at the Candlelight Dinner Theatre, in August. With its varied menu of activities that span all aspects of the performing arts experience, Spark is a great way to offer aspiring theater kids a 360-degree view of the art form.
Similarly, one of Boulder’s signature theatrical traditions, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (cupresents.org), also offers options for students aged 6 to 18 opportunities to build up a familiarity with the Bard of Avon. Shakespeare’s Sprites introduces Shakespeare’s oeuvre for students ages 6 to 9, and Camp Shakespeare, designed for students ages 9 to 18, offers participants the chance to “learn about Shakespeare by rehearsing, staging and performing a shortened play.” The Camp Shakespeare program culminates in a free public performance in the Roe Green Theatre.
The Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids also offers young performers to garner valuable, real-time experience on a stage in front of an audience. With both indoor, stage-based summer camps, the RMTK (theaterforkids.net) will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025, offering students camps geared for the youngest performers (ages 5 to 9) and those who may have a little more experience (ages 8 to 18).
Boulder County also offers campers plenty of ways to hone their musical skills during summer The Boulder Children’s Chorale (boulderchorale.org) offers students “opportunities for creative thinking, artistry and exploring the performing arts through music by fostering

self-expression and boosting confidence,” according to BCC manager Eileen Krenzel Rojas. “Showstoppers Week emphasizes musical artistry using musical theatre repertoire with drama games, vocal exploration, dance and singing, culminating in a final performance.”
In Longmont, Mojo’s Music Academy (mojosmusicacademy.com) offers aspiring young musicians the chance to build valuable experience with other artists. In addition to private lessons in a wide array of instruments and group classes, Mojo’s eight-week summer camp program is a chance for students ages 8 to 16 to prepare music for a full performance in front of an audience. “Mojo’s has been inspiring young musicians since 2007. We offer students the chance to make friends and lasting memories,” Mojo’s spokeswoman Jessica Rogalski said. “They can learn from professional musicians who give students skills to create a set of diverse music to perform for family and friends at the end of each week,” she added, noting that Mojo’s offers instruction in rock and roll, classical, jazz and vocal performance.
For young musicians whose specialty is more orchestral, the Colorado Music Festival (coloradomusicfestival.org) offers its own ways for young artists to build expertise during the summer. CMF Education Director Kathy Kucsan explains, “In our summer mini-camps (which range from one to three hours for a week), students are introduced to instruments … In Digital Music, they learn to compose their own music through technology (keyboards and composition software). Listening, singing, movement and playing are all part of their experience in a warm and welcoming environment.”
A child’s imagination is a big part of their creative life, and Renaissance Adventures (renaissanceadventures.com) caters to those skills with its focus on experiential education through live-action roleplaying games. “In Adventure Quest camps, campers embark on a mythic quest filled with mystifying riddles, interesting challenges and puzzling dilemmas designed to inspire teamwork and creative collaboration,” Director Pam Federer said.
For young artists whose interests lie in drawing, painting, printmaking and other similar expressions, Groundworks Art Lab (groundworksartlab.org) offers a wealth of workshops, classes and experiences in fields ranging from clay to printmaking to woodworking. With a wide range of locations, times and specialties, Groundworks is the perfect entry point for developing a child’s artistic skills.

The Transformative Impact of
“When they master dance skills, it boosts confidence and reduces future performance anxiety"
BY SHELLEY WIDHALM RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Five dance centers in Boulder County offer regular dance lessons and summer camps that teach various forms of dance and inspire creativity, collaboration, courtesy and discipline.
Mountain Kids Louisville is a gymnastics and dance school with classes in dance and ballet for ages 2 to teen, as well as in gymnastics and a Ninja Zone that focuses on fitness and developing motor skills.
“What’s unique about our dance program is it’s a non-competitive program that focuses on the art and performance quality in an artistic sense as opposed to a competitive sense,” said Anna Narvaes, owner of Mountain Kids Louisville. “Dance really provides students with an opportunity to grow and discover who they are. It’s such a cool opportunity for them to grow in their sense of self and in their confidence.”
Narvaes said students learn about choreography, collaboration with other dancers and performance, as well as
general spatial awareness, balance and coordination.
Mountain Kids Louisville offers a few summer programs, such as the Summer Day Camp, a full-day adventure camp for ages 5 to 12 that will be offered from May 27 to Aug. 8. The camp includes lessons in several areas with gymnastics twice a week, Ninja Zone once a week and several sessions of karate, dance and yoga, plus an average of four field trips per week.
The half-day Summer Dance Camp is two days a week, June 3 through July 31, and is for ages 3 to 7. The lessons center on a theme each week, including Frozen Adventure, Snow White, and Unicorns and Dragons
“It’s a creative ballet and musical theater camp, and each week, there’s a creative theme with arts, crafts and a snack, and it ends with a performance each week for the parents,” Narvaes said.
The Colorado Conservatory of Dance in Broomfield offers several summer residency programs, including an advanced intensive for ages 14 to 25, an intermediate intensive for ages 10-14 and a Summer Dance Camp for ages 1 to 3, 4 to 6 and 6 to 9. The intensives provide day long training in different dance skills and forms, focused on ballet, while the summer camp combines dance lessons with other activities.
“We find dance is a very powerful tool to help students understand their emotions, and these emotions can manifest different feelings,” said Sandra Parks, artistic director of the
Kinesis Dance.

Colorado Conservatory of Dance. “We teach dance as a tool to express those feelings through movement. These expressions can impact a whole room. ”
The Summer Dance Camps for ages 4 to 9 are offered in two six-week sessions, June 9 to 27 and July 7 to 25. The Classic Fairy Tales Dance Camp is for ages 4 to 6, and Creative Dance and Storytelling is for ages 6 to 9, with a theme selected each week that draws inspiration from popular culture and literature.
“We are firm believers that high-quality dance education means to teach life skills,” Parks said, adding that dance teaches communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity skills. “We promote the work ethic and the idea that you work really hard toward a goal, but you might see results immediately.”
Kinesis Dance in Boulder is a dance school that offers all forms of dance, including ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary, for ages 2 to 18 and for adults. The half-day summer camps are offered in one-week sessions from June 2 to July 25 and are divided into ages 3 to 4, 5 to 7 and 8 to 12, with choreography and techniques tailored to each age group. Lessons are based on a different theme each week, such as Moana, Wicked and Frozen, and there is a mini-showcase performance at the end.
“When they master dance skills, it boosts confidence and reduces future performance anxiety,” said Cindy Burdine, owner, CEO and artistic director of Kinesis Dance. “We foster a lot of teamwork and communication skills with kids, and that increases their social benefits. It helps them create a supportive community for themselves.”
Dance allows students to be creative while also building body awareness, improving posture, developing motor skills and improving strength, flexibility and coordination.
“They are developing all these cool skills they can take into other sports,” Burdine said.
The Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance studio in Boulder offers classes for ages five to adult in fabric, sling, rope, straps, and
low-flying and static trapeze, blending aerial arts with the grace of modern dance. Aerial Summer Camps will be from June 2 to July 18 for ages 5 to 17, with lessons at the beginner to advanced levels. Students will learn how to fly through the air, dance and perform while they build strength and flexibility and improve balance and coordination. They also will practice teamwork and engage in creativity and improvisation.
Airborne Colorado in Longmont provides foundational dance classes for ages 3 to 8 and technique dance classes for juniors ages 9 to 12 and teens ages 13 to 18, with life lessons offered through sport and art There are also beginner through advanced recreational programs and competitive dance, gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling opportunities. The Summer Break Camp is for ages 4 to 12 and will be offered from May 28 to Aug. 8.
David still remembers the moment his life changed.
As a boy, David was a part of the Cal-Wood Education Center camp, and his group came upon a stunning overlook. The instructor pointed at the mountain range in the distance and said, “See this? This belongs to you, and it’s your job to take care of it.”
David returned to Cal-Wood to do an article on the camp and told the instructors his story.
“It sparked his passion for the environment and set him on a path to becoming an avid outdoorsman and environmental advocate,” said Debbie Duran Stewart, director of development and communications for Cal-Wood.
Outdoor education provides many brain-expanding opportunities for kids through camps and activities that
connect with kids in deeply personal and transformative ways, like with David.
The hardest part of getting kids outdoors is getting them past all those screens. “Young people are so connected to technology When we disconnect them from technology and connect them with nature, magical things happen,” said Andra Coberly Webster, executive director of communications for the YMCA of Northern Colorado. “They get curious and adventurous. They challenge themselves. They try new things and sometimes fail, but they keep trying. That fosters resilience. They get to know themselves and their own abilities better.”
Webster went on to discuss how disconnecting from tech helps in other ways. “At camp, young people find a special kind of peace that can only be found in nature. The love and respect they develop for the planet and for wildlife is invaluable. They will carry that with them throughout life,” she said.
Jennifer Quermann, senior director of communications and

marketing for the Butterfly Pavillion, agrees. “Outdoor and nature training play a vital role in shaping young minds by fostering curiosity, creativity and resilience. Immersing children in natural environments encourages hands-on learning and sparks a sense of wonder about the world around them,” she said. “These experiences help develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as kids explore, observe and interact with nature. Additionally, outdoor activities promote physical health, reduce stress and enhance emotional well-being, which are crucial for cognitive growth and focus.”
Quermann used the example of camper Nathan (also not his real name) to highlight the impact.
Nathan is fascinated by bugs, and he and his family frequent the Butterfly Pavillion often, even though they live an hour away.
“Nathan’s journey with Butterfly Pavilion took a new turn when he became old enough to attend camp His parents were initially hesitant. Diagnosed with ADHD, Nathan sometimes finds structured, all-day settings like school challenging. But his unshakable enthusiasm for invertebrates convinced them to give it a try,” she said.
At Rosie’s Discovery Camp, Nathan thrived. “He absorbed new knowledge about invertebrates while eagerly sharing his own impressive ‘buggy’ facts with both staff and fellow campers. His excitement was so contagious that, according to his parents, he spent the entire drive home animatedly recounting his experience,” she said.
“His story reminds us how passion and curiosity can overcome challenges and how fostering a connection with nature can truly transform lives.”

Camps for Active Kids
From soccer to rock climbing, northern Colorado has you covered
BY ROSS MAAK RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
For some children, getting involved in sports camps is the ultimate excitement. For others, it’s like pulling teeth.
Regardless of skill and experience level, the number and variety of summer camps in Longmont and northern Colorado are seemingly endless.
YMCA OF NORTHERN COLORADO
The YMCA offers a host of different summer camp choices, primarily during June with its Sportopia Camp.
“Every week, campers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in multiple sports, including traditional sports like soccer, basketball and flag football, as well as nontraditional sports like climbing and pickleball,” said Andra Coberly, Executive Director of Communications, YMCA of Northern Colorado
“We will also include some fun and healthy competitions during each session. It’s a new camp, and we are thinking of it as an introduction and exploration of a variety of sports for young athletes or kids who just love moving and trying new things.”
Coberly said families can sign up starting Feb. 3 for one to four weekly sessions between June 2 and 27, and they’ll be at the Longmont, Lafayette, Loveland and Johnstown YMCAs.
ALBION SC BOULDER COUNTY
Looking to focus solely on soccer? Albion SC Boulder County is a great place to start. Albion offers a wide range of programs for both age and ability. Kids as young as 4 can kick their soccer career off in their Juniors program, while adults are welcome with their USL2 and USLW pre-professional teams And, of course, just about everything in between. When it comes to summer camps, AlbionSC is fully loaded.
“This year, we will have a June and a July camp that we call, ‘Final Third & Finishing School,’” According to Scott Stanton,
Director of Marketing. “The final third is considered the end of the field where you’re trying to score, so it’s all about how to create and score goals – arguably the most exciting part of the game. Though goalkeepers at the opposite end might contest that statement, we also have a June and July offering for them.”
Albion SC also offers the Kickin’ It Skills Camp, which is focused on developing technical skills with an emphasis on learning through smallsided games.
“Small-sided games offer realistic game-like situations with lots of repetition in problem-solving,” Stanton said.
The U13-U19 Pre-Season camp aims to help high schoolers kick start their fall season, while Joga Camp is for advanced U8-12 players. Team camp is for U9-15 teams looking to get some work in before the start of fall programming.
“And, finally, we are offering a College Talent ID camp for high school players looking to get some exposure to college coaches and learn about the recruiting process,” Stanton said.
BOULDER ROCK CLUB
From cardio (soccer) to strength (rock climbing/bouldering), Boulder Rock Club offers full-day camps for children ages 6 to 12 and 12 and up. According to Programming Manager Josh Hall, weekend camp sessions are also available for 4-5 year olds.
During the school year, Boulder Rock Club offers afterschool programs.
“Our Trailhead Tiny Tots for ages 4 to 5 help our youngest climbers learn to feel comfortable in a climbing environment

while instilling them with a love and awareness of the sport,” Hall said. “Our Basecamp Buddies for ages 6 to 8 help build upon these skills for our longtime participants. The Ridgeline Rangers for ages 9 to 11 start to really show the kiddos the ropes (literally) as we work to build an understanding of the rope systems. Finally, our Summit Seekers dive into training and technique for our older climbers.”
“We offer a variety of formats and have an internal scholarship program to allow for better access to climbing without cost being a limiting factor,” Hall added.
"Joining a summer camp can give participants an edge going into the next competitive season."
ABC KIDS CLIMBING
According to Chase Retrosi with ABC Kids Climbing, it is the first climbing gym in the world built specifically for the growth and development of youth climbers.
“All kids from 2.5 to 19 have access to ABC’s facility through recreational classes, competitive teams, outdoor rock climbing camps and clubs, birthday parties, and more,” Retrosi said. “ABC caters to all aspects of climbing and offers an accessible and challenging environment for all climbers – from a recreational child just starting to Olympic medalists and international champions.”
Camp ABC is the featured camp, exploring the foundational aspects of climbing.
“Camp ABC is specially designed to cater toward the climber’s journey, regardless of experience level,” Retrosi said. “Beginner, intermediate, and advanced climbers will set goals, challenge themselves and develop their physical, social and mental fortitude through indoor and outdoor rock climbing.”
WARRIOR PLAYGROUND
Is there a kid (or adult) who doesn’t harbor dreams of becoming a ninja?
“At Warrior Playground, we specialize in ninja warrior training, which combines elements of obstacle course racing, parkour, and functional strength training,” said Operations Manager Claire Pearson, adding that camps are available for all skill levels.
Joining a summer camp can give participants an edge going into the next competitive season, whether they compete in ninja warrior events or other sports.
“Beyond the physical benefits — like improved strength, balance, and coordination — our programs also focus on mental skills such as perseverance, problem-solving and teamwork,” Pearson said. “Ninja warrior training, in particular, encourages kids to tackle challenges head-on and develop a growth mindset, which benefits them on and off the course.
So, whether you’re interested in soccer, hoops, rock climbing or becoming a stealthy ninja warrior, organizations across northern Colorado have just what you’re looking for

Time to STEAM
Ahead!
BY WENDY MCMILLAN RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Although arctic blasts suggest otherwise, summer is only a few pages torn off the calendar—which means it’s time to start planning! When school’s out, children deserve experiences that enrich and enthrall them, allowing inspiration and imagination to flourish. Enter the world of STEM/STEAM-based Summer Camps. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and STEAM (STEM with an additional focus on Art) programming has become solidly established in schools for good reason. When exploration and discovery are on the menu, summer campers are treated to a different dish. Raised in the Rockies looks at four camps that give campers a taste of adventure.
Boulder County has two camps: the Longmont Museum Summer Camp and the Museum of Boulder at Tebo Center Two others offer more far-flung adventures: Deliberate Detour and Cottonwood Gulch Explorations.
MUSEUM OF BOULDER AT TEBO CENTER
Emily Zinn, Director of Education, seems as excited as campers by the offerings. The Boulder camps are:

LONGMONT MUSEUM SUMMER CAMPS
Leigh Putman, Museum Program Leader, explained that the Longmont Museum Summer Camps are week-long, half-day, themed camps for children ages 5-13. She said, “We offer 37 different camps including local history, archaeology, regional Native American culture, Dungeons & Dragons, arts & crafts, painting, ceramics, sewing, dance, music, the environment, ecology and pop culture. We also provide scholarships for summer camp, which families can apply for online.’
The Longmont camps are June 2 – July 18 (excluding June 30 – July 4). Putman said each camp is designed for age groups 5-7, 8-10, or 11-13 years of age. Additionally, the museum offers teen volunteer positions for ages 14+. Teen Volunteers can apply online.
Putman explained, “Our goal is to support each camper in a process of self-discovery as they delve into new subjects and creative avenues. We hope to make their summer experience enriching and rewarding by providing a fun, educational, welcoming, and inclusive program. Campers take home projects that they made with pride and new skills to experiment beyond their time with us. We encourage an environment where campers meet peers with shared interests and make new friends –we love to see families exchanging phone numbers during pick-up so that they can meet up after camp and continue these new friendships."
DELIBERATE DETOUR
Stephanie Tolk founded this program, known for making “world schoolers” out of families. Groups fly to Mexico or Peru for immersive outings, teambuilding, relaxing and learning about history with local experts. The two- or three-week sessions are for students ages 7 to 16 and can include their families.
Tolk said, “Take summer camp international! With Deliberate Detour, show your children the world while connecting them with peers in a safe, supportive environment. Through two—and three-week programs in Cusco, Peru and Oaxaca, Mexico, children immerse themselves in the culture and history through hands-on workshops, neighborhood walks, museum visits, exploration of archeological sites, and more. Activities include experiences like cacao workshops, visits to Inca salt mines, tropical fruit tasting, and Zapotec crafting.
Core programs run Monday through Thursday from 9:30- 3:30, with optional Friday Field Trips to significant historical and cultural sites open to the whole family While our team supervises children, adults can join Parent-Only Activities like cooking classes and walking tours to have
their adventures! While programs are facilitated in English, children may add on Spanish tutoring two afternoons per week. Deliberate Detour serves homeschooled and traditionally schooled children ages 7 to 16 (and mature 6-year-olds) with programs running spring through fall
At Deliberate Detour, our mission is to create a more empathic, peaceful world. We work toward this outcome by providing culturally immersive programming that opens minds, dismantles stereotypes, and expands perspectives on different ways to live on the planet. Join us in Peru or Mexico in 2025!”
COTTONWOOD GULCH EXPEDITIONS
Summer Camp Director Cass Landrum said, We are very proud of our history- we started as an idea from a school teacher in Indianapolis in 1926. Hillis Howie (the grandfather of our Enrollment Coordinator) envisioned a science-focused and experiential exploration of the American Southwest- way before
the environmental education movement. We still run our treks with his founding principles and his legacy of working with local Dine members to teach about Indigenous culture.
As we plan for our 99th summer, we still utilize old friendships and professional connections to build our itineraries.
I think that’s what makes us unique—that our all-boys Prairie Trek group can work on a forestry project alongside a ranger whose father attended Cottonwood Gulch, for example. We have so many local friends and families who are excited to share their homes, culture and experiences with our trekkers.
However, what really keeps me at work with the Gulch is the transformations I see in young people- even just in one summer. Our programs emphasize self-discovery and independence through community support. We’re a very accepting group of nerds that want to do cool adventures, learn about the place we’re in, and maybe make a painting or a song about our experience. It’s heartening to be a part of something changing so many lives.”

Inclusive Summer Camps
Empowering children through connection and confidence
BY BEN HANEY RAISED IN THE ROCKIES
Summer camps offer children a chance to explore, grow and connect. For children with special needs or challenges, inclusive camps provide even more: a safe, supportive environment where they can thrive. Camps like Roundup River Ranch and ABLE to Sail are leading the way in creating experiences for children with unique needs in Colorado
At Roundup River Ranch, children and their families can enjoy supported programs like Neuro-Week, a camp fully dedicated to neuro-divergent kids. The camp provides a full staff of medical volunteers that support the kids through various activities such as canoeing, archery and arts and crafts. “Our campers are just kids who want to be kids,” says the camp team. The environment allows them to embrace childhood experiences while building independence in a new environment.
ABLE to Sail takes a unique approach to empowerment by combining sailing lessons with life skills. Diane McKinney, the program’s founder, uses sailing as a metaphor for overcoming life’s challenges. Through lessons on capsize recovery and navigating windless moments, campers learn resilience, self-esteem and problemsolving skills. “We don’t hope they get it; we teach it,” McKinney explains. The program emphasizes combating negative thought patterns and helping children and teens develop a mindset of empowerment and “enoughness.”
Both camps highlight the importance of inclusivity, encouraging children to embrace their abilities and build connections. For parents considering an inclusive camp, the benefits extend far beyond the summer. Programs like these instill confidence, independence and lifelong memories.
From early childhood adventures to high school backpacking expeditions, Teton Science Schools
Summer Programs immerse your child in outdoor exploration and place-based learning Whether it’s exploring Grand Teton National Park, discovering local public lands, or engaging in exciting activities in Jackson Hole, Wyoming or Teton Valley, Idaho, every day is an opportunity for discovery, growth, and unforgettable traditions

Play, Learn &
The benefits of preschool summer camps
BY BEN HANEY
RAISED IN THE ROCKIES (Photos courtesy: Treehouse Learning).
Summer is an exciting time for young children to explore, grow and learn outside the classroom
Enrolling your preschooler in a summer camp offers a variety of benefits, providing opportunities for development through learning and social engagement.
At Treehouse Learning, owner Amy May emphasizes the value of camps designed specifically for preschool-aged children. “Play is the work of young children, and the ideal method through which all learning takes place—even in the summertime,” she explains. Treehouse Learning offers a dynamic summer program featuring field trips to local libraries, parks and splash pads, as well as onsite activities like nature programs. Weekly learning themes such as "gravity" or "the sun" integrate literacy, math and STEM into fun projects.
For parents exploring summer camp options, May advises choosing programs that offer consistency and familiarity. “Preschool children thrive in settings where they can attend for multiple weeks, build relationships and have time to explore and rest,” she notes. Avoiding overstimulating environments and focusing on camps with smaller, nurturing settings can make the experience more enjoyable for younger children.
Summer camps tailored for preschoolers, like those offered by Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) Early Childhood Education and St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) Preschool, provide structured environments that support social-emotional development and academic growth as well. These programs help children build relationships, adapt to group settings and develop critical early learning skills.
Whether it’s participating in hands-on science experiments, creating art, or enjoying outdoor adventures, preschool summer camps allow children to continue learning while having fun. Programs like those at Treehouse Learning, BVSD and SVVSD ensure children are ready to take on new challenges.
