BEST BURGER Roadhouse Boulder Depot

The best burger in town awaits you at Roadhouse Boulder Depot. The restaurant occupies Boulder’s storied train depot, melding historic with urban and offering a menu that is quintessentially Boulder. Buddha burger, anyone? The beef is Colorado hormonefree, age-verified angus, naturally raised 100-percent vegetarian using certified humane animal handling practices. “The Best Burger award is validation that the 12 years of time and effort that we’ve put into developing and redeveloping our burgers is resonating with our guests,” says Co-Owner John Shipp. “I think we won because of the research and constant innovation that we put into our burgers, and anything else on our menu for that matter.” At Roadhouse Boulder Depot, Shipp says, happy servers interact with guests and get feedback that they share with the kitchen. That’s where innovation starts. And it’s a fun and friendly place to be. 2366 Junction Place, Boulder, 303.443.2167, roadhouseboulderdepot.com. And the list goes on. Try a seaweed salad or steamed swai fish with a pot of dragonwell green tea. Takeout and catering? Of course. Chef Gao and wife Jennifer have worked hard and are thrilled to have received this honor from our readers. “We are stoked and really proud,” he says. Food & Drink BEST COFFEEHOUSE

Ozo Coffee Company

This isn’t the first time Boulder has shown Ozo the love for its amazing coffee. With four locations, amazing staff, and an unrivaled coffee selection, it’s easy to see why. Ozo truly is on the forefront of specialty coffee, and their baristas and roasters reflect the depth of the company’s passion. Ozo sources from farms that staff actually visit. They work on creating a longstanding relationship with the farmers and/or co-ops that supply the coffee. “We love to hear that the good people of Boulder enjoy what we are providing,” says Ozo’s Founder and President Justin Hartman. “We dial in the best roast to bring out the flavors in the coffee that we fell in love with while tasting at the farm level. Then we bring the coffee into our retail locations where we strive to have the most skilled baristas in the industry creating your final product.” 1015 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.645.4885, ozocoffee.com.

If you just can’t get with the calzone, then surely you’ll fall for some cheesy bacon tots, pesto bread or wings! “Honestly, it doesn’t surprise me that people voted for us,” says Manager Antonio Calloway. “We make sure our customers get what they want, and we try to deliver an experience for every person who walks in the door.” 1622 Broadway St., Boulder, 303.444.9663, dpdough.com. CU AND BOULDER’S BEST 7

Food & Drink BEST LATE-NIGHT License No. 1

The iconic Boulderado is only made cooler by an underground scene that goes when other shops stop. License No. 1 is not the typical Boulder bar, says General Manager Mike Larkin. “We provide quality cocktails, good service, a fun atmosphere and live music, as well as a trivia night and Karaoke night. In other words, we have a lot of fun things to do here besides just having a drink.” A pool table and skee-ball add some more bar games that appeal to the latenight crowd. While cocktails aren’t pushing the creativity envelope, there are plenty of classics on the menu, with bar tenders who are happy to whip up a twist on the traditional. And many house-made mixes keep things fresh. The No. 1 drink at License No. 1? The Old Fashioned, Larkin says. The old-school-cool drink is made by muddling sugar with bitters, adding some whiskey or brandy, and topping it all off with a twist of citrus. 2115 13th St., Boulder, 303.442.4344, license1boulderado.com.

BEST INDIAN/NEPALESE AND BEST NEW RESTAURANT

Kathmandu Restaurant II

Glacier Homemade Ice Cream & Gelato BEST ICE CREAM

Just when you thought you had to head up the hill to Nederland to get your fix, Kathmandu Restaurant II opened at the site of the former Golden Lotus restaurant on 28th Street. It serves the best of Indian and Nepali cuisine for carnivores, vegetarians and those who eat gluten-free. Warning: Don’t read the reviews on Yelp and Facebook while you’re hungry! Boulder is full of folks who have eaten authentic Nepali and Indian food, so the clientele at Kathmandu II tends to be discerning. (They wouldn’t cast a vote for anything marginal.) You might want to chow down on the lunch buffet, or perhaps you want a classic combo like a lamb and chicken curry with saag soup and chai tea. Is masala your thing? Try tikka, paneer or potato with a steaming naan. Yum. Bottom line: Boulder gets pretty serious about its Far East food, and obviously Kathmandu II is a huge hit. So check it out. 1964 28th St., Boulder, 303.442.6868, facebook.com/ KathmanduRestaurantII. Runner Up for Best Indian/Nepalese: Sherpa’s Adventurers Restaurant & Bar, 825 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.440.7151, sherpasrestaurant.com.

Glacier Homemade Ice Cream & Gelato

There’s ice cream, and then there’s Glacier Homemade Ice Cream & Gelato. And the difference between the two is BIG, as our readers know so well. Glacier’s got actual award-winning ice cream, gelato, sorbet, yogurt, milkshakes and more, made with naturally grown produce and ingredients. Seventy flavors are constantly showcased at each store, so if you crave Death by Chocolate, chances are great that you can find it. “Our emphasis has always been delivering the best possible ice cream to our loyal fans,” says General Manager Kate Busse. “This means using the best ingredients we can find, listening to our customers’ requests, and constantly innovating. We have Glacier classics like funky donkey (Oreos, peanut butter, fudge) and red raspberry chocolate melt, but we also try to make new flavors weekly like my favorite this week - honey basil pistachio.” 4760 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.499.4760, 3133 28th St., Boulder, 303.330.6542, glaciericecream.com.

Runner Up for Best New Restaurant: Doug’s Day Diner, 2400 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.449.5733, dougsdaydiner.com.

Arugula Bar e Ristorante

BEST ITALIAN Arugula Bar e Ristorante

Would it be stretching it to say that Brasserie Ten Ten’s happy hour is glorious? No way! Our readers picked it as THE after-work spot downtown. The restaurant’s Frenchinspired cuisine, “Le Grand” Platter, weekend brunch, and stellar wine and cocktail menu are a few of its finer points, but it’s also an ideal spot to unwind when you leave the office. The Happy Hour Hors d’Oeuvres, Fromage and Charcuterie are on point, giving guests just enough to satisfy the pre-dinner cravings. Enjoy scrumptious well cocktails, A-List beer, margaritas and more without breaking the bank. Director of Operations Greg Topel and the restaurant staff are thrilled to have gotten your vote. “This is outstanding, and we are incredibly grateful to the community for supporting us,” he says. “We’ve steadily grown our happy hour program over time, and this honor is very much appreciated.” 1011 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.998.1010, brasserietenten.com.

Without the most visible location in town, out-of-theway-in-a-good-way Arugula depends on locals as its core customer base. And while the eclectic, made-fromscratch menu here changes twice a week, regulars count on a few delicious items that haven’t left the list over the Italian ristorante’s seven years in business: tomato-fennel bisque; Colorado bison bolognese; and a vegetarian or vegan platter, with varying renditions like the white bean-stuffed savoy cabbage leaf, warm quinoa, beet and tempeh salad, pickle, nuts, cheese and vegetable chips. If that doesn’t sound like traditional Italian that’s intentional, says Chef/Proprietor Alec Schuler. “We have a healthy slant here with a canola-free kitchen,” he says. “We only use extra-virgin olive oil, butter and a sunflower oil from a local provider.” A warm, cozy yet contemporary atmosphere punctuated by funky artwork made from antique kitchen implements completes the modern vibe at this neighborhood favorite. 2785 Iris Ave., Boulder, 303.443.5100, arugularistorante.com.

Runner Up: Roadhouse Boulder Depot, 2366 Junction Place, Boulder; 303.443.2167, roadhouseboulderdepot.com.

Runner Up: Carelli’s Ristorante Italiano, 645 30th St., Boulder, 303.938.9300, carellis.com.

Food & Drink BEST ROOFTOP

BEST MEXICAN

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant

Agave Mexico Bistro & Tequila House

You say rooftop; we say Rio. The lofted outdoor dining scene is always hopping atop Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant in downtown Boulder. “It’s the views, the atmosphere, the food, service, margaritas, etc., but also it’s a big patio and we’re a popular restaurant, so we may have more people coming to our rooftop than anyone else in town,” says the Rio Boulder’s General Manager Derek Stoldt. Find your way through this old building’s funky maze of stairwells and you’ll be treated to a majestic view of the Flatirons, complete with a calming fountain, heaters and misters, music and a rousing bar. “At dinner, it’s our most requested space,” Stoldt says of the rooftop. “We feature our full menu, plus plenty of space for folks more interested in meeting friends for happy hour, margaritas and some guac or queso.” 1101 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.3690, riograndemexican.com. Runner Up: Boulder House, 1109 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.443.8600; boulderhouse.co. ipage.com.

Tangerine Restaurant

BEST PLACE TO CURE A HANGOVER Tangerine Restaurant

While healthy is at home here, with alternative dishes like “beans, roots and greens,” comfort food is also a welcomed complement at Tangerine. Some morningafter huevos rancheros, anyone? How about a slowbraised short-rib benedict? Or the ultimate hangover nosh: pan-fried chicken breast, breaded with brioche bread crumbs, cooked in sunflower oil, served on a Belgian waffle with Vermont maple syrup and seasoned home fries. “It’s come as you are here. We are casual and relaxing,” says Justin Medlin, general manager. “We want to help you get your day going in the best possible way – even if you are a little hung over.” An excellent wait staff encourages questions, and Medlin touts his crew as some of the best-trained baristas in Boulder. Drinks are not an afterthought. A Conscious Coffee espresso will get you going again, or a Bloody Mary or mimosa can help wind the party down. 2777 Iris Ave., Boulder, 303.443.2333, tangerineboulder.com. Runner Up: Foolish Craig’s, 1611 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.247.9383; foolishcraigs.com

BEST PIZZA

Beau Jo’s Pizza

Beau Jo’s is a Colorado tradition – it’s a mountain pie thing. There’s no competing with that special recipe that just works so well at high altitude or that incredibly sweet white or wheat crust made for a honey-dipped dessert. In a sense, you can taste the local love that goes into every pizza. “We have a great product that we put our hearts into each and every day,” says Nick Sposato, general manager at the Boulder location. “You can only find Colorado mountain pies at one place. We are a one-of-a-kind pizza that can’t be found anywhere else.” The Beau Jo’s brand started over 40 years ago and continues to defy the odds stacked against pizza places trying to compete in a flooded market. Sposato says Beau Jo’s success comes down to basics: business done right. The ingredients are simple: “Serve amazing pizza with friendly smiles,” he says. “Continue to be in balance and do what’s right.” 2690 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.554.5312, beaujos.com.

Dining at Agave is like visiting Owner Rene Cervantes’ mom’s kitchen. “We do very traditional Mexican, not New Mexican of Colorado-style Mexican,” Cervantes says of the bistro’s twist on the often-misunderstood cultural genre of Mexican food. Everything is made from scratch based on legacy recipes and influenced by Mexico City and coastal regions of Mexico. “These are flavorful dishes that me and my mom created over the years,” he says. Highlights include fresh-roasted poblano peppers, simple but mouth-watering tomatillo salsa with handmade chips, and tableside dishes made-to-order in a molcajete, a traditional heated lava-rock mortar and pestle. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are always available, an area where many Mexican restaurants fall flat. Cervantes laughs, “If they only knew where my family’s from – they got to eat meat like once a month!” An earth-tone color scheme softens the palette of this uptempo, casual fine-dining spot. Cervantes says, “There are no mariachi bands, but there’s a lot of tequila, energy and fun.” 2845 28th St., Boulder, 303.444.2922, agavecolorado.com. Runner Up: Efrain’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina, 1630 N. 63rd St., Boulder, 303.440.4045, efrainsrestaurant.com.

BEST OUTDOOR FOOD/DINING

The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse

There’s just no place like Boulder’s teahouse. What place can compete with this exotic gift from Boulder’s sister city: ceiling, tables, stools, columns and exterior ceramic panels hand-carved and -painted by more than 40 Tajikistan artisans. Luckily quality food, unusual teas and a dreamy outdoor environment live up to the notable billing. “We are the only restaurant to have a patio on Boulder Creek,” says General Manager Matt Kiefer. Breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menus are infused with a variety of flavors from around the world. Service is as elevated as the menu. “We strive to take all facets of the experience to the next level,” Kiefer says. “Creating a superior guest experience is our focus every service, every table, every time.” For the full effect, sip and savor at real afternoon tea, featuring herb-butter cucumber sandwiches and lemon scones, at this globally minded landmark. 1770 13th St., Boulder, 303.442.4993, boulderteahouse.com. Runner Up: Brasserie Ten Ten, 1011 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.998.1010, brasserietenten.com.

Food & Drink BEST SEAFOOD Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar

Coastal tourists may scoff at the idea of a legit fish restaurant in coast-less Colorado, but one step into the fresh and briny atmosphere of this jam-packed West Pearl restaurant, and they’ll quickly learn what we locals already know: Jax does seafood well. So well, in fact, that they’ve won multiple awards and accolades since they began shucking oysters and slinging salmon in 1994. On the menu, you’ll find vast crab selections, fresh fish from the grill and caviar dreams, and that’s just the beginning. But just because Jax sources their seafood from flown-in locales doesn’t mean they’ve left the eat-local movement behind: local farms supply the majority of Jax’s fresh vegetables. And lest we forget a commitment to sustainability, which is at the forefront of their mission: Jax is proud to be Colorado’s first restaurant to be certified by the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch. Ahoy, mateys. 928 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.1811, jaxfishhouse.com.

BEST SPORTS BAR

The Lazy Dog Sports Bar & Grill

What started as pipe dream of a bar in 1973 has grown to multiple locations with plenty of dedicated followers from all walks of life. When Boulder residents and students aren’t actually outside playing sports, you can bet they’re saddled up in a cozy seat here to watch the game on some 30 TVs or enjoy good company and entertainment for community evenings like Wednesday trivia night. “It’s just a good, friendly environment where everyone can get their game on,” says Assistant Manager Brad Dickman. Happy hour is huge, with popular 50-cent wings, but the bar and grill also features live music four nights a week and a massive rooftop deck perfect for warm summer nights. 1346 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.440.3355, thelazydog.com. Runner Up: Mudrock’s Tap & Tavern, 585 E. South Boulder Road, Louisville, 720.890.7900, mudrockstapandtavern.com.

BEST WINE SELECTION

Frasca Food and Wine

Wine is a way of life at Frasca. Co-Owner Bobby Stuckey and the Frasca wine team have been building an extensive wine cellar for the last 12 years, and the selection grows each month. “Our team works diligently to source the best regional Italian wines, as well as wines from around the world,” Stuckey says. “Through travel, education and a constant pursuit of excellence, we strive to provide a warm and unique wine experience to all of our guests.” Expert staff members help guests curate custom wine pairings for specific meal choices. The restaurant also holds regular Monday Night Wine Dinners. “It’s a great way to introduce our guests to winemakers and importers in a casual setting,” Stuckey says. “We write the menu around the wine flight that we will be pouring that week. It’s also a great deal: $50 for a four-course menu (not including the wine flight).” 1738 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.442.6966, frascafoodandwine.com. Runner Up: Liquor Mart, 1750 15th St., Boulder, 303.449.3374, liquormart.com. 12

CU AND BOULDER’S BEST

BEST THAI Khow Thai Café

Khow Thai has won more Boulder’s best awards than we can count. And that’s because the authentic cuisine is memorable, but so is the way this café makes you feel like family. The story of Khow (sounds like cow, but means rice) Thai’s beginning – a “dream in the head of a little immigrant woman” who broke all the rules of entrepreneurism but still found success – just makes everything taste better. Now the plate has been passed to the next generation, with a seamless transition and the same attention to food and customer-service quality, according to Owner Nicki Jaraschatrkaew. “You will always feel welcomed by our servers, and we do our best to keep the customers happy.” Fresh, tasty meals like the popular pad Thai, pad kee mow, and green and yellow curry dishes come made-to-order – and fast – whether you’re dining in or picking up takeout. 1600 Broadway, Boulder, 303.447.0273, khow-thai.com. Runner Up: Chez Thuy Vietnamese Restaurant, 2655 28th St., Boulder, 303.442.1700, chezthuy.com.

BEST VEGETARIAN

Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant

Boulder packs a lot of veg-heads, and when they’re hungry they head to Leaf for way more than lettuce wraps. Executive Chef Rachel Best changes the menu every three months and includes intentional variety for dedicated vegans and vegetarians, as well as carnivores who want to add more plant-based options to their diet. “I try to think about what would appeal to people who normally eat meat, too,” she says. Sellouts include Jamaican jerk tempeh with black rice and coconut plantain sauce and pad Thai, currently prepared with spaghetti squash “noodles.” To translate creative meat substitutes it takes a patient wait staff, which Leaf has managed to keep for the long haul. “Our servers are so knowledgeable and passionate about what they do,” Best says. More popular than ever, part of Leaf’s appeal may be its connection to community – using foods from its own local farm and churning its own compost in a “neat little system.” 2010 16th St., Boulder, 303.442.1485, leafvegetarianrestaurant.com. BEST LOCAL BAND

REI

Jello Biafra

Ummm, Jello Biafra’s not a band. Yes he is. No he’s not. Back story: Eric Boucher was born right here in Boulder and went to Boulder High and in 1977 he became Jello Biafra, front man for the proto-punkers The Dead Kennedys. The music and the lyrics were political and the shows shocked the likes (and dislikes) of Tipper Gore. The DKs were bigger in England than in the US, but got plenty of attention for controversy and insightful commentary. Jello ran for mayor of San Francisco in 1979 and came in fourth out of a field of ten. He started turning his artistry towards spoken word projects and other activism. Today he maintains a very active Facebook page, posting videos and commentary on whatever he wants. He guest DJs all over the country and keeps a hand in Alternative Tentacles, the record label that he founded in 1979. So y’all, here’s to Jello Biafra, the Best Local Band Dude. There’s always room for Jello! facebook.com/ jbiafra. Runner Up: Natural Motives, facebook.com/ natural motives.

Founded more than 75 years ago, REI is THE destination for clothing, gear and solid advice for camping, hiking, climbing, cycling, running, paddling, skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding and anything else related to outdoor recreation. Joanna Smith, a retail sales manager at the Boulder store says, “Our CEO Jerry Stritzke has gotten us back to our authentic self. Our ultimate goal is to get people outside to enjoy the outdoors. Satellite Boardshop

Eldora Mountain Resort

Raul Pinto and partner, JG Mazzotta, co-own Satellite Boardshop. The two started the business while they were students at CU. In the last 14 years, they’ve managed to make quite a name for themselves. “Snowboard Magazine voted us one of the eight shops that are saving snowboarding,” Pinto said. He added, “What we’re selling is a lifestyle.” Satellite is one of the best resources for boardsports, not just in Colorado, but in the nation. Perhaps that’s why they’ve been singled out by both Vans and Nike as a go-to spot for all things skate and snowboard related. In addition to supplying some of the best equipment around, Pinto and Mazzotta are invested in the local community. Pinto says their commitment to “going above and beyond from a community involvement and participation standpoint” is a big part of their success. It’s the selection that we’ve curated that makes us different.” Art + Soul carries internationally-known designers from Europe, England, Canada, Armenia and other countries, as well as local artists like Amy Clay, whose fine art show opens at Art + Soul on April 29 at 5 p.m. April 29 will also be the opening for a trunk show with one of Art + Soul’s most well-known designers, Alex Sepkus. 1615 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.544.5803, artandsoulboulder.com. By controlling it, I can do a better job,” he says. “We can not only put better quality materials in and sell it for less money, but we also can service the bed.” For a year after purchasing your mattress, if you find it too soft or too firm, Verlo’s will adjust it for free. Verlo’s is in the process of remodeling their showroom, which means there are some great deals available on floor models. The remodel is expected to be finished in late April. 3080 Valmont Rd., Boulder, 303.447.1154, verlo.com. We’ll set the scene: Wisteria drapes elegantly through the pergola’s beams, while spindly, exotic orchids reach tall for the sunlight. In the corner a fountain bubbles, guarded by a bronze frog playing the saxophone. No, you haven’t taken too much Ambien – you’ve just sauntered into the gardens at Sturtz & Copeland. Since their humble, dirt-road beginnings in 1882 at 1500 Arapahoe, Sturtz & Copeland has been Boulder’s go-to source for all that’s green and grows. In addition to the vast selection found in their garden center, they also offer a wide array of retail products (exotic pottery or raw honey, anyone?) as well as public classes, like Beekeeping, Seed-Starting, and the all-ages Fairy Garden Magic. One fan says enthusiastically, “It’s like a jungle in there!” This is probably one of the highest compliments they could receive. 2851 Valmont, Boulder, 303.442.6663, sturtzandcopeland.com. Founded by Bill McGuckin and now owned by his daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Dave Hight, the store was built on an ethos of service and community involvement. ”We are not so much profit-minded as service-minded,” said Dave in a recent interview. “We’ve built a real good thing for the city. You’re strolling down Pearl Street, humming to yourself and minding your own business, when – zing! – a sparkly something in The Little Jewel’s window catches your eye. You pause, pivot and gaze longingly at the silver twinkling beauty you swear is winking at you. So goes the story for many-a-visitor to The Little Jewel. Tucked into a glassy nook on the Pearl Street Mall, the Little Jewel has been selling Boulder’s most gorgeous custom designs for the past 34 years. Whether you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind piece or to repair that long-broken necklace, the experts at The Little Jewel will know just how to help. 1225 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.443.3353, thelittlejewelco.com.

And one more number: 6, which is the approximate number of Advil you’ll need after a night with one too many of Hazel’s selections. When Boulder’s behemoth liquor store opened its doors in 2012, shoppers found a new kind of booze-buying experience: Bright, wide aisles, low shelves, legible signage, an open, airy feel – and incredibly low prices. Since then, Hazel’s has upped its own ante. BEST HYDROPONICS STORE

Magnolia Road Cannabis Co.

If you’re from Boulder and you hear “Magnolia Road,” you’re likely to think one of two things: The curvy, cliffhugging road in the canyon that winds up Keystone Gulch, or Boulder’s most favorite hydroponics store tucked into a minty green strip mall off 30th Street. For our purposes, we’ll tell you about the latter. Clean, uncluttered, and highly (get it?) professional, Magnolia Road Cannabis prides itself on their premium product, affordable prices, and friendly budtenders, who offer knowledgable customer service with a smile. A well-organized haven for strain chasers and edible fans alike, Magnolia Road Cannabis knows their hydroponics. And we’ll “leaf” it at that. Christina’s Luxuries

In a town that’s known for its laid-back, granola style, a luxury lingerie boutique may seem out of place. But if the popularity and foot traffic at Christina’s Luxuries is any indication, Boulder’s ladies demand quality, style and comfort from their undies. Christina’s Luxuries, located at the corner of Canyon and Folsom, is ground zero for curated lingerie collections, swimwear, sleepwear, and other high quality, luxurious items you won’t find crammed on the racks at your local discount retailer. “We are all about romance, beauty and femininity. We have luxurious lingerie so you can live beautifully and love deeply,” says Owner Barb Wilson. And aside from the luxury, Christina’s offers the practicality to match: With the help of experienced bra-fitters, women can find the best bra for their body (which, for us women, can be a truly life-changing event). 2425 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, 303.443.2421, christinasluxuries.com. Classic meets modern for all men’s clothing needs at Weekends, a 26-year-old Boulder establishment. This locally owned fashion center on Pearl Street features both men’s and women’s clothing, but this year, their offering of men’s threads won our top award. Owner John Schopbach attributes this award to the selection found in their denim store, a section in the back of the building stocking all of the premium denim lines. “Denim is still big and as strong as ever,” Schopbach said. “We are able to offer younger more contemporary modern clothes back in the denim store for the younger crowd.”Another popular fashion with the younger crowd is the Common Projects Italian sneaker line available at the store. Shoppers of all ages are also drawn to the quality of the fabrics found at Weekends. “We are getting all of our spring in,” Schopbach said. “We have t-shirts and really nice soft fabrics. Looking for mountain views, pet accommodations and a space for community interaction? He answered that he wanted to spend more time with her, and suggested they open a pet product store. “It was my husband’s idea because I like animals so well,” Withers says. Withers love for animals carries over into her work and she appreciates the Boulder community’s respect for animals. “They are extending their lifestyle and their beliefs onto their animals,” she says. “They want their animals to be as healthy as they and their children are.” Withers says that the “Best Customer Service” award is what makes them “Best Pet Product Store.” I think the key is the second award we got: service,” she says. “My people pride themselves on knowing names, remembering what food people buy, and helping the customer when they come into the store. Take a vivid stroll down memory lane through the power of music at Bart’s Record Shop, one of Boulder’s favorite places to score hard to find vinyls, 45s, CDs and more. Owner Will Paradise recently acquired the store, and still works with original owner Bart, who started the establishment 25 years ago. The four employees of the store hold over 100 years of combined experience when it comes to selling records. “The thing that makes this store unique and why I wanted to buy it is the fact that the staff and the folks that have worked here have a great appreciation for music and the customers,” Paradise said. “It is an oasis environment that is low pressure. You can come in and relive your memories and get some good music” Additional services the store provides are stereo, equipment, record and CD repair, as well as consulting for the music portion of estate sales. As far as connecting with new generations, Paradise embraces the cycle of the old becoming new again. “There are a lot of people that want to experience vinyl,” Paradise said. “It starts with the packaging itself, such as the beautiful artwork, the smell when you open the package, and then holding the record. And then you listen to the whole side of the record. We have more and more younger people coming in who want this experience, what their parents have had experience with.” 1625 Folsom St., Boulder, 303.444.1760, bartsrecordshop.com. BEST WOMEN’S CLOTHING STORE Barbara and Company

Barbara and Company

If wardrobe advice and versatile pieces are needed, Pearl Street’s Barbara and Company offers a solid collection of fashion for women of all age groups, body shapes and sizes. “We do that on purpose,” Owner Kathy King said. “We are eclectic in the way that our clothes can be put together. We can look young or more business. We cater to students and their parents when they come in, and we have a lot of customers who drive in from Denver.” The 33-year-old company opened in Boulder in 2008. It is the second Barbara and Company, which is originally based in Denver. King takes pride in the combination of younger and mature sales people at the Boulder branch. “Their whole goal is to help people feel good in what they leave in,” King said. “We want people to feel comfortable in what they purchased. We stress that everyone be honest with the customers. If it is not the right thing, it is not the right thing. We want to make sure that what you leave the store with adds to your wardrobe.” 1505 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.443.2565, barbaraandcompany.net.
