The folks that run the Pearl Street Laughing Goat like to think of their caffeine house as the original gangsta of Boulder coffee houses. Other longtime purveyors may take umbrage, but there’s no doubt, the Goat has created a fine bohemian hangout just east of the downtown mall. The coffeehouse brews “single-origin varietals, organically certified, fairly traded premium coffees, roasted especially for them by a small roaster in Denver. Along with a full menu of breads, treats and coffees, lovingly crafted and poured by devoted baristas, the Pearl Street Laughing Goat hosts live music and other performances every night of the week. Hurrah for supporting the arts, Goats! CU students know they can run to the Norlin Library to get a cup of Goat Joe whenever the library is open, too. When CU students need a quick lunch, a nice sit-down dinner when the folks are visiting town, or when they get the late-night munchies, Golden Sun Chinese restaurant often makes the cut. The restaurant near the corner of 28th Street and Arapahoe Avenue carries the typical Chinese fare – sesame chicken (popular with students, manager Tina Zu said), Kung Pao Shrimp, Szechuan Beef, Chow Mein Noodles, Fried Rice and the like. But Zu said regular customers also appreciate the items found on the Golden Sun Chef Specials menu. “They like Chili Pepper Chicken and Chinese Twice Cooked Pork,” Zu said. The Golden Sun is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. until 2 in the morning. 1635 28th St., Boulder, 303.449.0783, bouldergoldensun.com.

Best Bagel MOE’S BROADWAY BAGEL

Best Bakery AND Best Dessert BOuLDER BAkED

Kevin and Kirsten Comstock grew up in a family that did good desserts. On mom’s side was a tradition of Southern cakes. On dad’s side were brownies and cookies and other baked goodies. About 10 years ago, the brother and sister tandem realized it was hard to find quality old-fashioned desserts in area restaurants. So they cooked up the idea for Boulder Baked, a café and delivery service that specializes in home-style goodness. “More than anything it’s the consistent quality that makes people coming back,” Kevin Comstock said. “We use old-fashioned recipes with premium ingredients. We use butter instead of margarine, eggs instead of substitutes, real sugar instead of molasses or corn syrup. We serve home-style desserts you can’t find anywhere else.” Kevin handles front-ofhouse duties, and Kirsten oversees the kitchen. While Boulder Baked started as a delivery outfit – their made-to-order cookie boxes, delivered to your door right after they come out of the oven - still makes up a healthy sized portion of the bakery’s business, Kevin said. Cupcakes, like the strawberry shortcut version or the cookie dough cupcake, are also popular. Boulder Baked also has an array of vegan and gluten-free deserts to choose from, as well. Kevin Comstock said, however, it’s one of the bakery’s earliest items, the carrot cake, made with an old family recipe, that remains the standard bearer. “That carrot cake that we grew up with, that’s our bar,” Kevin said. “Everything we do here, as far as I’m concerned, has to be on par with that.” 1911 Broadway St., Boulder, 303.444.4999, boulderbaked.com. Runner Up for Best Bakery: Breadworks Bakery & Café, 2644 Broadway St., Boulder, 303.444.5667, breadworks.net Runner Up for Best Dessert: The Cheesecake Factory, 1401 Pearl St., Unit 100, Boulder, 303.546.0222, thecheesecakefactory.com

Best Breakfast ThE Buff RESTAuRAnT

Longtime diners at The Buff Restaurant know the Boulder establishment moved from its former digs on 28th Street to Canyon Boulevard this past January. The new location is a little bigger and a lot more modern, said Chris Meyer, who since 1995 has owned The Buff with his wife, Jacquelyn Sproul. What hasn’t changed is the Buff’s awesome grub, like the popular Two Step, the Ole Skillet or the Breakfast Tacos. “They’re getting as many rave reviews as they ever have,” Meyer said. The restaurant is open from early until 2 p.m. every day, and that means it puts its focus on breakfast and simple, delicious lunches. For years, one of the town’s most popular morning chow houses, The Buff puts the customer’s needs first and foremost. “We work on pleasing each and every person who comes through the door,” Meyer said. 2600 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, 303.442.9150, buffrestaurant.com. Being in the middle of the country, it took a while for Boulder to get used to eating a boiled bread with a hole in it – something that wasn’t a donut – for breakfast. Thanks to Moe’s Broadway Bagel, which has been making and serving fine bagels to locals for 21 years, the bagel is here in Boulder to stay. Over the years, Moe’s has introduced and perfected bagels of all varieties – tomato cheddar, jalapeño, cranberry walnut and more – and schmeared them with fine cream cheeses. The Moe’s build-your-own or specialty bagel sandwich has also become a local lunchtime staple. And each customer gets the “moeservice.” That’s a “customer first, satisfaction guaranteed” service, said general manager Steve Pagnotta. So what really makes a Moe’s bagel so good? “Easy,” Pagnotta said. “We make the bagels with love.” 3075 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.442.4427, 2650 Broadway, Boulder, 303.444.3252, 3267 28th St., Boulder, 720.406.9000, moesbagel.com. Best Brew Pub Walnut BreWery

Brewpubs weren’t invented during the last decade. That’s just when they blew up in Boulder County, and elsewhere. To find Boulder’s first brewpub, you need to head to the Walnut Brewery, which has been crafting its own beer right on the restaurant’s premises since 1990. Since then, the Walnut has earned several craft brew awards, and continues to be a hotspot for beer hounds and food lovers. Why? One man – Rodney Taylor, the Walnut Brewery’s brew master. “He’s been part of the craft beer movement for 20 plus years, and he makes really exceptional beers,” said Walnut Brewery manager Chris Portillo. “Anybody that tastes any of the beers that he makes knows that they’re exceptional. He puts a lot of work into that.” The Indian Peaks Pale Ale is the Walnut’s signature brew. But people love the seasonal beers Taylor concocts, as well. “We have a pretty big following when the Sled Dog Red comes out the Old Thumper Barleywine comes out,” Portillo said. 1123 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.447.1345, walnutbrewery.com. Runner Up: Mountain Sun Pubs & Breweries, 1535 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.546.0886, 627 S. Broadway St., Boulder, 303.543.0886, mountainsunpub.com

Best Beer Selection Backcountry Pizza & taPhouse

Whether you’re looking for a rare Belgian brew on tap, a Birrificio del Ducato aged barleywine from Italy or the latest IPA from a Colorado brewer, chances are Backcountry Pizza and Taphouse has it. The pub carries nearly 70 brews on tap, and more than 300 others in bottles. You can also encounter staff members who are Cicerone trained – that’s the rigorous certification training program for beer masters, similar to a wine sommelier. What you won’t find at Backcountry, though, is a snooty attitude. “We try really hard not to be pretentious,” said manager Mary Boerman. “We know a lot about beer, but we like to have fun and introduce people to knew things.” The taphouse hosts regular beer-tasting events, too, where enthusiasts of all levels can try new tipple, and take down one of the restaurants signature pizzas or burgers. 2319 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.449.4285, backcountrypizzaandtaphouse.com.

Best Elegant Dining AND Best Wine Selection Frasca FooD anD Wine

Students, you can sit in your dorm with Chef Boyardee and a box of wine, or you can put on a nice shirt and enjoy an elegant and transformative experience in what is arguably Boulder’s classiest restaurant. Frasca pays homage to Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia region with a menu that highlights the sophisticated flavors of the area and a wine program that cellars more than 200 and pairs exciting choices with meat in an uncomplicated way. “One of the most important things about fine dining that is lost by many professionals is the empathy that we have for our guest and what it takes to make a reservation to get here,” says owner Bobby Stuckey. “We push ourselves to be very in tune with that.” Frasca champions local farms and offers the best naturally raised meats and organically grown produce available. It’s a beautiful thing to then see these local ingredients combined in a meal that is wonderfully Friulian. 1738 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.442.6966, frascafoodandwine.com. Best Classy Bar the Bitter Bar

At The Bitter Bar, it’s all about the vibe and balance. Dimly lit and comfortable, the bar puts a new, hip spin on the cocktail lounge. When it comes to The Bitter Bar’s cocktails, its mixologists know how to pour a perfect drink. “There’s a fine line between too sweet or too tart too bitter,” said general manager Burton Daniel. “I think we’ve always done an incredible job of making balanced cocktails that have nuances of all those things.” Daniel suggests The Cowboy, a fine blend of rye whiskey, lemon juice, maple-cayenne syrup and orange bitters. “It’s the sort of drink where you can tell there’s whiskey in it, but it’s not overpowering,” Daniel said. Part of The Bitter Bar’s allure comes from its kitchen, too. Menu highlights include the chef’s housemade pasta dishes, and a Crispy Chicken. “They crisp up the skin in a skillet and finish it up in the oven,” Daniel said. “That’s our biggest seller right now.” Yum. 835 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.442.3050, thebitterbar.com. Runner Up: Jill's Restaurant & Bistro, 900 Walnut St., Boulder, 720.406.7399, stjulien.com

Best Deli/ Sandwich Shop Deli zone

One of the secrets to a satisfying sandwich is the quality of the bread. Deli Zone, which boasts three busy locales in Boulder, knows from good bread. “We have our own bakery,” said Jon Stuckenschneider, who works the counter at the Deli Zone on the Hill. “All the bread gets sent here daily from our own bakery. Don’t expect something fancy when you pop in for something to fill your stomach. The radio is usually blasting tunes, the TV is set on a sports channel, and the dudes working the grill are, well, dudes. If you’re seriously hungry, take a bite out of the Baby Kong. “That’s by far our favorite sandwich,” Stuckenschneider said. “It’s got fresh eggs, sausage, hash browns, American cheese. It’s thrown through the toaster so it comes out nice and hot.” 1322 College Ave., Boulder, 303.449.6952, 4800 Baseline Rd., Boulder, Suite D-104, 303.499.9213, 2900 Valmont Rd., Suite D1, Boulder, 303.447.9349, delizone.net. Best Indian/Nepalese Food Curry-n-Kebob

Curry-n-Kebob is the highest rated Indian restaurant in Boulder. Regular patrons know all about owner Zuned Khan’s legacy of great restaurants in this area and were overjoyed when this eatery opened. The food is made to order in 10 to 15 minutes. Spice combinations are made from scratch. So if you want a stale Indian food buffet under hot lights ... look elsewhere. Daily lunch and dinner specials (vegetarian, too) keep it student-friendly, served with rice, nan, onion bhaji and dessert. Curry-n-Kebob makes world-class tandoori, masala, and korma. Vegetarian Aloo Gobi and Mutter Paneer would make even the most hardened carnivore change teams. It’s all excellent. The top rating is well deserved. Most entrees are under $10, making the attention to taste buds that’s shown in every bite even more astounding. Check out the plethora of rave reviews on Google + Local! “Thank you to all the readers who supported us,” says Khan. “We are very happy to be chosen.” 3050 28th St., Boulder, 720.328.4696, currynkebob.com. Best Food Truck bumPer CroP Food truCK

Admit it: your tongue starts wagging when you catch a glimpse of Bumper Crop’s unmistakable red truck. This food-mobile has made a huge splash in its first year rolling around Boulder, culminating with our readers’ votes in this category. Business partners Dave Miller and Gary Silverman have more than 90 years of combined fine dining restaurant experience, and boy does it show. “Our philosophy is simple: food from scratch, good ingredients, slow cooking, no need to manipulate it,” says Miller. “We receive a lot of compliments on how our flavors stand out, and that’s largely due to our simple, honest cooking and ingredients.”Bumper Crop’s food is inspired by the cuisine and culture of New Mexico. And while it did not set out to be a taco truck, the cries of the people could not be ignored. Today its signature is tacos, although a Reuben or Mac n Cheese will steer you right, too. “We’ve been in the business a long time, and we love throwing a party,” says Miller. “With the food truck, everyone’s invited!” 303.746.8893, bumpercropboulder.com. Runner Up: The Tasterie Truck, 303.550.6111, tasterietruck.com

Best Fast Food Good tImes burGers & Frozen Custard

Another win in this category for Good Times because people recognize that it offers something that’s not available anywhere else: all natural beef and chicken with no steroids, hormones, or antibiotics; vegetarian fed; and humanely raised. If that’s not Boulder enough for you, then consider wrapping your lips around a big “Fresh” umbrella; fresh cut fries, fresh frozen custard made every few hours, and fresh squeezed lemonade. “We’re trying to push the flavor envelope and pull ideas down from full service restaurants into fast food,” says CEO Boyd Hoback. “Examples are our Portobello Mushroom sandwich, Lemon Caesar Salad, Bananas Foster Shake, and Oregon Blackberry Custard. We have a pipeline of new ideas that you won’t find anywhere else in fast food. We want to keep a funky vibe to Good Times brand and be Colorado’s own.”Hoback says that the restaurant tries to be “non corporate” in its approach with a culture that is based on respect, having fun and high standards. It’s refreshing to know that Good Times isn’t going to bully you into buying and consuming crappy food. “We win on quality,” continues Hoback. “We don’t have a Value Menu or play the low end game, but we focus on providing the best quality we can at everyday prices.” 2050 26th St., Boulder, 303.449.5185, goodtimesburgers.com. Runner Up: McDonald’s, 1800 28th St., Boulder, 303.443.4700, mcdonalds.com

Best Calzone d.P. douGh

It’s 1 in the morning. You’re in desperate need for some carbs and protein. If you’re on or near the Hill, there’s a good chance you’re hitting up D.P. Dough’s, the calzone shop on Broadway. “We use the best ingredients we can find,” said Dough’s Daniel DiMarchi. “We’re always innovating.” Regulars know about the secret stash menu. Eight monster calzones, tucked away, out of sight of women and children and anyone who might be frightened by the mounds of edibles the D.P. Dough-makers put into them. “They have a crazy amount of ingredients,” DiMarchi said. “One of them that’s really popular is the Godfather Trifecta.” That comes with steak and chicken and bacon and potatoes and pesto and mozzarella cheese. And check out D.P.’s dessert calzones, too, a flaky pastry dough treat filled with raspberry preserves or apple-cinnamon gooey-ness or chocolate-marshmallow fillings. 1622 Broadway St., Suite B, Boulder, 303.444.9663, thedoughshack.com. Best Juice Bar Jamba JuIce

Boulder loves its Jamba Juice! Students know what a shot of wheatgrass or a Kale-ribbean Breeze smoothie can do for the body after a late night out. There’s a whole lotta Jamba around town, making it easy to get your fix. “We have a great team, and we provide excellent customer service,” says Bekah Haban, shift manager at the 29th Street location. “We have products that many people like and a lot of variety.”Jamba Juice is known for its whole food, classic and all fruit smoothies. When you’re swarming the Hill at 2 a.m. and you’re so hungry you could eat your own hands, does anything even come close to the Big Fish at Illegal Pete’s? It’s so good it really should be … illegal. This institution on the Hill (and Pearl Street) is ready to feed the masses into the wee hours, serving up burritos, taquitos, quesadillas, tacos, nachos – there’s plenty to keep you busy. The food is fresh, the music’s right, and the vibe is a straight up celebration of humanity. Illegal Pete’s is as good a venue to connect with your friends as you’re going to find in Boulder. “We make everyone feel welcome,” says general manager Milton Guevara. “We’ve got great service, high quality food and a price that is right for students. We’ve got the whole package.” Illegal Pete’s is open on the Hill until 2:30 a.m. Get there, chow down, and figure out where you’re going when they kick you out. This bar might be as close to “Cheers” as you can get in Boulder – friendly, unpretentious and welcoming. Every time. You might not hear “Norm!” when you walk through the door, but the bartenders and wait staff will know your name eventually. People might come to Sundown for the specials and pub games, but they stay because it feels like home. “Thanks to our loyal patrons and our staff,” says co-owner John Tuschman. “We have terrific clientele and great people in the bar.” Sundown has darts, shuffleboard, foosball and five pool tables. Billiard lovers of all skill levels compete in an open tournament on Monday nights. On Tuesday, it’s league play, so come watch if you get rocked on Monday. You might learn something. Sundown still offers $6 pitchers of PBR when a lot of bars are doing away with pitchers altogether. In fact, it’s known as THE PBR Bar in Boulder, although the bar’s craft beer selection is impressive. 1136 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.449.4987.

Glacier wins again in a town with numerous popular ice cream joints. The ice cream and gelato are as good as it gets, according to our readers. Glacier goes way beyond those signature items with milkshakes, malts, hot fudge sundaes (with from-scratch hot fudge!), fresh waffle cones, banana splits, ice cream cookie sandwiches, root beer floats, and customized ice cream cakes. “I think...the Boulder community appreciates our dedication to using the highest quality ingredients, our use of local products, and attention to detail when it comes to our gelato and ice cream flavors,” says general manager Kate Busse. “My hope is that our love of ice cream and gelato and the community we make it for shines through in all of our flavors. Best Seafood Jax Fish house & oyster Bar

Best Thai Food Khow thai CaFé

In business since 2001 – Know Thai is no stranger to accolades for their renown palate-pleasing fare. Owner Larry Newman credits his wife, Toi, for her kitchen prowess. Taught by her mother in Thailand, she’s the force behind the flavor that locals have come to favor. While dishes like Pad Thai are longtime favorites, Newman says a new fave is Pad Prik Khing, made with spicy green beans, bell peppers, lemon leaf and panang curry paste. Another popular option – Thai noodle bowl. The new menu pleaser combines a light celery broth, with rice noodles, bean sprouts and chili – garnished with scallions and peanuts – if you like. Walk into this open kitchen environment and immediately feel the energy – from the chefs rattling a pan or two – to order up. Red walls and big picture windows invite light that streams into this casual space. Friendly service and reasonable prices attract both the college crowd and local neighbors with mortgages. 1600 Broadway St., Boulder, 303.447.0273, www. khow-thai.com.

With nearly 20 years in the seafood business, it’s safe to say Jax Fish House knows a thing or two about preparing delectable fishes dishes. On any given week, they procure about 700-800 pounds of seafood in Boulder alone. General Manager Rick Compton says that’s a conservative figure, considering three additional locations. What it means for customers – Jax has the buying power that lands the freshest catch of the day. It’s flown in daily from the Pacific Northwest, and both coasts. Order Dungeness crab, and it’s usually less than 24 hours out of the water. French trained chef Alex blends farm-fresh ingredients with a divergent array of delicately balanced flavors. From Asian inspired spices like nam prik pao and green curry, to sambal, a spice from the Middle East, his inspirations give customers a glimpse into the flavor palates from around the globe. Why people come to Jax, “Freshness and the family vibe,” says Compton. 928 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.811, jaxfishhouse.com. Best Margarita AND Best Outdoor Food/Dining AND Best Rooftop the rio Grande Mexican restaurant

Best New Restaurant Gondolier italian eatery

You may remember The Gondolier from back in the day when it sat in that cozy space on Pearl Street – for all 54 years. With a brief 15 month hiatus and a move across town, the Gondolier has reinvented itself. Owner Nelson Kugel chuckles to think they’ve been around for so long and yet won the Best New Restaurant category. Red birch wood tables, wine crate walls and Venetian candles evoke a warm welcoming feel inside. Plus, this neighborhood favorite is easy on the wallet –making it a perfect place to bring the family. Oh – and no more fighting for parking. Whether you dig scratch-made pizza crust and savory homemade sauces or the Tuesday night $6.99 bottomless pasta bowl, Kugel says the menu is filled with yummy options. Plus, wine and beer enthusiasts will delight in the 14 in-house taps the keep on pouring. Special occasion? They host private parties up to 40 people. 4800 Baseline Rd., Boulder, 303.443.5015, gondolierboulder.com.

What makes Rio’s house margarita one of the best in town? While traditional margaritas rely on that tart flavor that makes your lips pucker up to your ears, at Rio, they like to keep things on the sweeter side, without that “limy bite,” says Manager Stephanie Gaydos. Want to try something different? Big Tex margarita hits the spot with fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice. Perhaps another reason Rio pours so many yummy margaritas – the prices. Thursday night from 9 p.m. to close means $4 margaritas. Whether you need an excuse to get outside or a reason to round up friends after work, the rooftop at Rio is where it’s at. If you haven’t been there lately, go check it out since they’ve completely remodeled these digs. Few hotspots in Boulder can compare with Rio’s rooftop views – where the Flatirons memorize your soul as much as the bubbling fountain that lulls you into relaxation. “We’re open to providing customers a sanctuary from the daily grind of life. Just sit back and let us take care of you,” says Gaydos. While the drinks and atmosphere rock, it’s the items on the menu that keep your tummy in good graces. Homemade fare, from the freshest sauces, salsas and tortillas, they spare no detail when dishing up their culinary sensations. Fresh roasted chilies made onsite give any dish a certain punch of flavor. A popular appetizer to try – Verduras Del Mar, served with monetary jack cheese, peppers, onions and mushrooms – and shrimp if you like. As if that’s not enough, unique décor inside, like the hand painted chairs add a certain art-clectic appeal. 1101 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.3690, riograndemexican.com.

Press Play bills itself as a “barcade” – that’s half bar, half arcade. During the day, all ages are welcome as the fun focuses mainly on the video games. But after dark, Press Play turns into a dance club, complete with amazing lighting, a brand new speaker system, and pros, like DJ Bedz and DJ Z-Star, behind the turn tables. “The number one thing we stress is customer service,” explains Dustin Leidholm, one of the club’s managers. “It’s all about what the customer wants.” In that vein, Press Play will soon be unveiling a new private room directly adjacent to the dance floor, bookable for groups, corporate parties and birthdays. Leidholm describes Press Play as a less expensive alternative to Dave and Buster’s. There are non-alcoholic slushies and video games for the kids, and plenty of fun for adults, too. Best Local Musician/Group Gasoline lollipops

Gasoline Lollipops describes themselves as “an alt country/roots rock quartet from the mountains of Northern Colorado that are the soundtrack of the American highway.” Rose Clay, the band’s founder, certainly knows a thing or two about music. His mother, also a songwriter, even worked with music legend Willie Nelson. The band’s style is somewhat theatrical, using their music to create a soundscape that conjures vivid pictures. “As you pass through the lowlands of Tennessee, you’ll hear barn dances scatter across the fields, while on the planes of Eastern Colorado, you’ll be haunted by murder ballads and love lost. This is the canvas that the Gasoline Lollipops paint so well,” says their Facebook bio. One part rockabilly and one part alternative rock, the Gasoline Lollipops have carved out a space for themselves in the Boulder music scene with a sound and feel that is all their own. facebook.com/ gasolinelollipops. Best Local band the casUal sinners

When asked to describe his band, Derek Weiman, guitarist and singer, replies, “Casual Sinners is not just a band, but a way of life.” They are a modern rock band with a bit of a grunge sound. Their other influences include folk, hard rock, classic rock and even dance, giving them an eclectic sound that makes for a unique brand of rock. Both the group’s front men, Weimen and Nate Folsom, are Boulder natives and proud to have carved out a name for themselves in the local music scene. Weimen’s guitar riffs are soulful and well crafted, while his voice is on the edgier side. By contract, Folsom provides rich, smooth vocals, which contract nicely. They’re backed by what Weiman calls a “driving, powerful rhythm section.” The Casual Sinners play live nearly every weekend, and have a self-titled EP set for release within the next couple of months. Best Local Celebrity DJ BeDz

Cassidy Bednark, better known as DJ Bedz, is a busy man. Somehow, he manages to juggle weekly appearances at local nightclubs, not one, but two radio programs (“Party To Go Mix”, each weekday at 6:45 p.m. and 8:45 a.m., and “White Shadow Radio” every Sunday morning from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m., both on 95.7 FM), and has served as the official DJ for the Colorado Nuggets for the last 8 seasons. A lifelong fan of music, particularly hip-hop, Bedz is inclined to give credit where credit is due. It was, after all, his mother who took him to see some of his favorite artists live. She also encouraged him to take SafeHouse Denver under his wing. SafeHouse provides assistance to victims of domestic abuse. Bedz has donated thousands to this worthy cause in the last couple of years alone. Back then, the shop was located in a small basement on the west end of Pearl, but grew so quickly that it moved to its current, larger location in less than a year. Since that time, University Bicycles has made a name for itself as the go-to spot for bike repairs, sales and service. “Our store has a museum in the rafters that tells the story of cycling since 1869,” Binegar explains, referring to the wide variety of cycles hanging from the ceiling inside the shop. “We love kids, commuters, mountain bikers and roadies.” Whatever style of cycling you lean toward, University Bicycles has got you covered. 839 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.4196, ubikes.com. Best CU Student Organization University of Colorado Program CoUnCil

Program Council has been a vital part of CU campus culture since the 1950’s. “Our goal is to bring affordable, quality entertainment to the CU Boulder campus and community,” said Kelsey Gonzalez, the current Director of the student organization. Program Council achieves this by booking concerts and comedians for on-campus performances, as well as hosting viewings of films, including cult classics, current-run flicks and even yet-to-be-released titles. It’s impressive, particularly given that this is a student-led effort. “It is the best way to get your foot in the door in the music entertainment industry while still being in college,” Gonzalez explains. In fact, many of Program Council’s student leaders make solid industry connections through the experience, and even line up their first post-graduation jobs. Best Musical Festival roCkygrass

In late July the small mountain town of Lyons becomes the center of the bluegrass universe, as generations of legends and future-legends converge on the red rock cliffs above the St. Vrain River. Originally founded by Bill Monroe and members of the Colorado Bluegrass Music Society, today’s RockyGrass, which is held at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons, is known internationally as one of the great traditional bluegrass festivals. All day, headliners on the main stage entertain the audience. Then, when the last entertainer is finished, the campgrounds are filled with the sounds of bluegrass jam sessions. The 2014 RockyGrass will be July 25-27. Alas, all tickets were soldout by mid-January. “We are touched with this award, especially in light of what the community of Lyons went through in September 2013,” says Brian Eyster of Planet Bluegrass. “Our property was completely under water. But we’re still here and looking forward to welcoming folks here. This year’s tickets sold out faster than ever before. We are doing three festivals on the same grounds, and tickets are still available for two – Rocky Mountain Folks Fest, August 15-17, and Kinfolk Celebration, September 19-20.” Planet Bluegrass Ranch, Lyons, 800.624.2422, bluegrass.com/ rockygrass. Here’s the skinny on those popular pool tables at the 28th Street Tavern, according to owner Matt Notter. “Depending on the time of year, we have pool leagues four to five nights a week. We’ve been in business for four and a half years, and have had our tables for the same amount of time. We’re a sports bar, so pool seemed a natural fit – and we have the room to make it a nice set-up. The atmosphere and space in our place makes it appealing to our pool players, and to our customers in general, as well as our specials and our food. The tables aren’t too crowded, and it’s a nice neighborhood bar. We re-felt our tables every year, and keep them clean. Customers can play pool from open to close, and a great bonus is that we offer free pool about 45 hours a week (11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Monday through Saturday, and all day Sunday). The Tavern is a great place to relax and shoot a game!” Note that the 28th Street Tavern also won Best Sports Bar, Best Happy Hour and Best Hamburger this year! 2690 28th St., Boulder, 303.444.1562.

Historic Chautauqua Park offers everything from sweeping views to miles of trails to a variety of wildlife. Yet perhaps its greatest perk is its proximity to the city, said Jim Reeder, division manager, City of Boulder Open Space. “It’s great because it’s close in, you don’t have to drive hours to get to it,” Reeder said. “You gain immediate height, get great vistas of mountains and city.” In addition to the sweeping views, the extensive trail system offers trails that are exposed to the sun, and those that are in the cool of shade, as well as the opportunity to put together any length of hike or run using the many trails. “Most trails are relatively easy hikes; people of all abilities can use (them), whether you’re a runner, hiker, or out for a stroll,” Reeder said. The area is known for bears and mountain lions, as well as a range of other species, and raptors often soar over the Flatirons. “Chances are as good there of seeing wildlife as anywhere in the system,” Reeder said. “It’s impressive that you see it that close to the city.” The ranger cottage, dining hall and other amenities offer additional experiences. “Folks can stop in before or after a hike and enjoy all the things Chautauqua has to offer,” Reeder said. 900 Baseline Rd., Boulder, 303.442.3282, chautauqua.com.

We make sure our stores are not a cookie cutter approach and we make sure our stores are relevant to the customers who are shopping them.” McGannon also mentions that Kroger’s size – Kroger owns 2,424 stores in 31 states - can be a major benefit for King Sooper’s shoppers. “We are able to leverage the size of Kroger to get additional savings on products that we’re able to pass on to the customers but we’re still given the ability to be locally headquartered and make local decisions that are important to the communities we serve,” she says. 16050 30th St., Boulder, 303.443.9622; 3600 Table Mesa Dr., Boulder, 303.499.4004; 6550 Lookout Rd., Boulder, 303.530.1020, kingsoopers.com.

Best Dry Cleaners John's Cleaners

John Elwood’s dry cleaning service is a Boulder original that began with Dugout Cleaners opened by Vincent Elwood, Sr., in 1923. Their expansion to four stores in the area is a testament to their desirability and success in the community. Their long history in the community doesn’t mean they have fallen behind: in fact, they’re using cutting-edge technology like heat seals for computerized, tagless garment tracking. John’s Cleaners also uses SystemK4, an environmentally friendly, halogen-free solvent made by Kreussler. “It’s a brand new solvent that they evolved,” Elwood says. “I’m real happy with it. I think it does a better job than most of the solvents that are out there.” John’s Cleaners works hard to be green in other ways, too. They use fuelefficient delivery vans for their free pickup and delivery service, recycle most of the hangers that are returned to them and use solar-power at their home office. 4800 Baseline Rd., Boulder, 303.665.9493; 3325 28th St. #6, Boulder, 303.444.2877, johnsdrycleaners.com Runner Up: Art Cleaners, 1715 15th St., Boulder; 303.440.8600, artcleaners.com
