SAFE SEX

Birth control is very sexy

Gettin’ it on? CU can help you be healthy about it (and give you free condoms)

ure, life could be roses and lollipops if the damn kids these days practiced abstinence, but we all know that is just not practical. Instead, we must impart our wise wisdom upon the children so they can stop spitting out spawn at age 13. But you’re not children anymore. Look at you, so adult. College looks sexy on you. While you’re flaunting your adult, if you plan to embark on a career of nonabstinence, let’s hope you make some wise decisions. Whether you can be found pants-down in the backseat of a car, behind a downtown alley Dumpster, or just missionary in bed — let’s learn how to be safe and healthy about sex. Yes, my toddler was a pleasant surprise, but since I could be your (smokin’ hot) mom, the timing was fine. There’s no way in hell I could’ve handled a child in college. I was too busy washing down ditch weed with kegs and trolling gangbangs. Of sorts. And speaking of babies, you will NEVER SLEEP AGAIN. So if you like to sleep and have sex, it’s time for you to research your options on campus. And remember, let’s all be cool humans and get a firm “yes” for consent on both sides. Rape and assault are not needed in a world that’s struggling for peace against violence. Don’t be assholes to each other. We’re all on the same team. If you are a victim or witness of sexual assault, there are various resources and information listed below. From counseling, to testing, to free condoms, to

DORM LIVING

Get along, little roommates Remember this sage advice for when the going gets a bit sticky

t’s 2016, and the robot revolution is imminent. But today, we still have to deal with other human beings and their messy emotions. Especially when it comes to roommates. During your years of dorm dwelling at CU, chances are you’ll find yourself in more than one sticky situation (heyyo!) with cohabitants. Here’s how to live and let live, courtesy of Professor Heidi Burgess, director of CU’s Conflict Information Consortium, and Boulder County psychotherapist Jen Phillips:

Listen

“When there is conflict, listen and try to find out what their point of view is,” said Burgess. “You may initially think they’re an idiot or a liar or all sorts of things, but if you listen, they likely have a reasonable point of view and a reason for their behavior or Jeremy Papasso / Staff Photographer ideas.” Gabby Scott and Tara Khan move in to Willard Hall. Your roommate, like you, is a carbon-based, sentient being with messy emotions and a shifting identity. When shit hits the fan, remember to cut each other some slack. “I like to be curious. That takes the judgment out of it,” said Phillips. Ask: “How did You’ve got a bud you grow up? Who are you? What do you believe in?” she in Ombuds said, rather than judging a

DORM DECOR

Function, feng shui in your space Good things come in small quarters: Ideas to make the most of it By Amelia Arvesen Staff Writer

W

hen it comes to dorms, using every square inch of space becomes necessary. College students, renters and interior designers across the country have come up with some smart and appealing ideas for merging function and fun in small quarters. Bring some personality to your pad with these tips.

Find ALL the hiding places

No corners can be ignored when you’re sharing a small space with a few roommates. Search low and high and everywhere in between for extra storage space. Cady Gorhum, former director of the Residence Hall Association, said getting organized can simplify life in your minimal space, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Gorhum suggests raising your bed using bed lifts, which can increase storage space or even provide a large enough space to add a desk or extra seating. “I’ve never had my bed lofted, but I do lift my bed up to the highest pegs so I can fit storage bins and my clothes hamper underneath it,” she said.

The cantaloupe rule

Reduce clutter using the cantaloupe rule. Use accents that are at least as big as a cantaloupe. Smaller items will make your dorm look cluttered, so look for medium to large vases, chunky trinkets and bulky oddities to use sparingly in the space. The rule will help you

reduce the amount of knickknacks in your space and allow the larger pieces to shine instead of fighting with a cluster of pieces. Don’t be afraid to go bold with the larger accents. Color and pattern will add some big character to your small space.

Dual purpose

Make your decor work for you by buying funky pieces that are also functional. Instead of a love seat, find a funky futon with colorful sheets or striped fabric over the cushion that will add a pop to the space and provide somewhere for friends Jeremy Papasso / Staff Photographer to crash. Ideally, your dorm will be a place where you can work and be comfortable, as Roman Dougherty has achieved

Drugs, alcohol: When to draw the line

CU offers help for substance-abuse issues By Amy Bounds Staff Writer

N

ow that pot is legal in Colorado, you might assume that every day is like a scene straight out of the movies “Half-Baked” or “Dazed and Confused.” But at some point, marijuana — and other drugs — can leave the realm of fun and may start to affect your daily life in a bad way. How do you know where to draw the line? Here’s a look at the health effects of some common drugs and where you can turn for help if you develop a problem.

Marijuana and minors

Because of the polarized debate on pot, not to mention “holidays” like 4/20, marijuana is a prominent concern at CU. While it’s legal now in Colorado, marijuana is still classified as a Schedule I controlled substance and illegal under federal law. It’s also illegal to smoke on campus and if you’re under 21. The Good to Know Colorado campaign breaks down all

Set boundaries You have to decide exactly what your needs and wants are as a person and find where compromise is possible. Personal boundaries then need to be expressed, and not telepathically. In the dorms, CU requires roommates to use My Room 2.0 to create a roommate agreement, which covers how the roommates will handle noise, visitors and cleanliness, and lays out how to handle violations of the rules. “It’s kind of like a pre-nup agreement, working out expectations and needs from the very beginning,” Burgess explains. She said the contact gives you a tool in possibly awkward situations. “It’s a great conflict-resolution instrument. All you have to do is say, ‘Remember that agreement we have?’” “(Laying out your boundaries) is going to feel awkward, and it’s going to probably not be graceful at times,” said Phillips, who notes that such intimate details rarely come up even in close friendships. Hurt feelings are normal, and getting over them is part of growing up.

MENTAL HEALTH

It’s more than OK to ask for help You would for any other serious health issue

Staff report y the time most young adults arrive on campus, they have been lectured about sex, reminded to wash their hands, caught and fought a cold, and they maybe even know the symptoms of alcohol poisoning and bacterial meningitis. In the midst of all this helpful information, one vital piece is often missing, something not so black-and-white, but crucial. The lack of similar conversation about mental health issues — which students are far more likely to face than meningitis — can be downright troubling. “So many people, parents in particular, don’t think of starting that conversation.

B

They’re hoping their young adult will go off to college and be OK,” said Boulder’s Tracy Markle, clinical director of Collegiate Coaching Services. “So when everything’s not OK, we find stigma alone is one of our biggest challenges in getting young adults the help they need.” At CAPS — the acronym for CU’s Counseling and Psychiatric Services, formerly Counseling and Psychological Services — Dr. Dorothy Moon often meets students reluctant to ask for mental health help, or who are ignorant of available mental health resources. “Sometimes they won’t go

Gyrotonic tower emphasizes rotation Method is designed to both lengthen and strengthen your muscles

By Aimee May Staff Writer

yrotonic Bohdi, 3200 Valmont Road, Unit 4, Boulder, 347-693-4408, gyrotonicbodhi.com Instructor: Jennifer DePalo-Peterson, of Broomfield, a Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis instructor of 20 years. She trained directly with the founder of the method. DePalo-Peterson is also a professional dancer. She was a principal dancer with the esteemed Martha Graham Dance Company for 18 years. She now dances with 3rd Law Dance and is a faculty member at Colorado Ballet Academy. She also ran a Gyrotonic studio in New York for 12 years. She opened Gyrotonic Bohdi on Nov. 30 after moving to Boulder to raise her two kids here. She says she first learned about Gyrotonic when she was 21, from a professional dancer she admired. “I made an appointment for the next day, and it changed my entire life. I was never injured. My dancing changed. I felt different after Gyrotonic, and then I knew I wanted to teach it to pass it on,” DePalo-Peterson says. “It completely opened my body and my mind and my thoughts.” What is the workout? A method of movement designed to simultaneously lengthen and strengthen muscles, as well as improve circulation, coordination and joint mobility. Some say it fuses some principles of yoga, tai chi, swimming and dance. Movements are made up of repeating circular, spiraling, 3-D flows that you

coordinate with your breath. The method is done on a special piece of equipment called the Pulley Tower Combination Unit, which has adjustable pieces to guide, support and challenge (through resistance) students in different exercises. It is built to encourage a full range of 3-D, functional motion of the joints, with no stops and starts (where most injuries happen). There is no compression or impact. “It completely decompresses your spine,” says DePalo-Peterson. “You use a contrasting force, stabilization through oppositional forces, to connect from the

insertion of the muscles — not superficial places, but the deeper roots of your muscles, where they connect to the bone.” She says the class will mobilize your spine, stimulate your organs and systems, make fascia more pliable — “like a massage, from the inside-out.” She says it also incorporates the nervous system, which is why it is effective for people with neurological issues, such as Parkinson’s. What’s different? Unlike yoga and many other workouts, Gyrotonic has an emphasis on spiraling and rotation, with no end point. Although the Pilates Tower may look similar to an outsider, with a bench and looped bands for your hands and feet, the use is really different. “Gyrotonic works on all of the systems of the body at the same time. You’re working the nervous system to your bones into the muscle, cardio, balance,” DePalo-Peterson says. “It’s a system that is realigning the body to be in upright, at home and harmonious in yourself.” Gyrotonic is much more than just stretching. Cost: The studio offers two to three free classes a month to try or for people who can’t afford to pay. But even the drop-in classes are affordable: $10 for artists, students and people who need a sliding scale or $15 for others. Once you know the techniques, you can buy a 24/7 membership to the studio to use the equipment for $33 a month. “It’s so important to do the work,” DePalo-Peterson says. “That’s what I wanted to change. People couldn’t afford it. ... I want people to come and do what’s good for them and heal themselves.” Level: All levels, ages and abilities. Participants range from elite athletes to dancers to people with Parkinson’s,

Still, because it tapped into deep muscles in new ways, I found the class an exciting challenge. It was harder than I expected but never painful; it somehow felt great, while my muscles were shaking. I would rate it a seven on a 10point-scale of difficulty, although it could be easily increased or decreased.

Abuse from page 12 Wardenburg Health Center. Some of the downsides include memory loss and driving impairment. There’s also a compounding effect when you’re drunk and high, compromising motor skills, reaction time and anticipation ability. Marijuana use, like any other drug use, can hurt your learning and academic engagement, officials said.

Prescription drug problems

Prescription drug abuse among students can be broken down into two categories: stimulants and other drugs, which includes depressants and barbiturates. Along with negative effects like irritability and explosiveness, using stimulants like Adderall as a study aid tend to make students over-interpret how much they’ve actually accomplished. People using stimulants feel like they’re achievementoriented and making progress on tasks when really

Movement from page 18 Finer says he was not a lifelong athlete, beyond being a ski racer. He also trained with Portal and CrossFit, but he says the intent at the collective is different than at a fitness facility. “There, the main thing is to come lose weight or look good naked. We don’t discuss that or make it a priority,” Finer says. “Our big focus is on quality and making people better in their bodies.” If you lose weight or feel good naked, that’s a byproduct, he says, but that’s not the goal. What is the workout: All classes here are called Movement. Each class includes some aspects of mobility, gymnastics, strength work and hand-balancing. Classes may also incorporate coordination work, locomotion patterns, dance foot work and martial arts-style partner interaction. “I find it really difficult to describe,” Bernstein says. “The biggest thing we’re doing is exploring how to be a really good, general mover.” Not fitness. Movement. Classes are not focused on achieving a certain trick or goal. They teach a process of learning. And that builds, day after day, in small increments — not major jumps. Bernstein says he encourages students to think three months to a

year out. That means components of class may repeat day after day; what changes is you, how you execute the movement and then how you build on and deepen it. “Most of these things aren’t quick fixes. We’re rebooting systems, and it takes time to do that,” he says. “Classes are all different, but there is a lot of drilling and exposure to the same concepts.” What’s different? This is the only facility of this type in the United States, Finer says. The next closest one is in Brazil. “A lot of people come in here because they’re wowed by the handstands or acrobatics or strength. They come in with a preconceived notion that this is like yoga or like gymnastics,” Finer says. “That’s not actually what this is. That’s just a small part of the pie.” Unlike adult gymnastics classes, the students here are not gymnasts and many did not take gymnastics as kids, Finer says. They point to their students as the proof of what makes the facility different. “It’s hard to find other groups putting out the same kind of quality among their students,” Finer says. Cost: First class is free for locals. After that, a one-time drop-in for the hour class is $20 and $25 for the 90-minute class. Level: All levels.

Autumn Parry / Staff Photographer Jon Kolaska practices the QDR position during a class at Boulder Movement Collective.

No, seriously. I know you will see the photos and think, “Nope. A class with people doing 60second handstands is not for beginners.” It is, though. Because the class is so process-oriented. “The truthful joke we

make is everyone who walks through the door is a beginner, even the people who think they’re capable,” Finer says. “A lot of people are intimidated by what’s going on here, but most of our clients didn’t have any of this, even a few months ago.”

He says that he was not athletic as a kid. “I was picked last every single time in dodgeball,” he says. “We come from a background of raw clay beginners. We’ve been through the process and

or martial arts background, but I felt comfortable in class. Totally challenged to the max, but with no pressure — again, because of the logical way each movement is broken down into a process of specific steps. Just practice the step you can do. Physically and mentally,

the class was really tough — we’re talking 10 out of 10 on so many levels — yet it was zero stress, zero pain, zero judgment. That combination is rare and magical. “We’re not looking for talented people. We’re unimpressed when talented peo-

ple come in,” Bernstein says. “How can you take a person who wasn’t athletic, who didn’t do this when they were a kid and give them the skills to do high-level stuff? One-arm chin-ups, and we’re not climbers. Students who can pick up patterns but aren’t dancers.” When: Check the schedule for classes every day: 90-minute classes in the morning and evening and hour-long one at lunchtime. I took a 90minute class at 9 a.m. on a Thursday. Muscles worked: “We’re the physical ed class you never got,” Finer says. You will feel it everywhere, with an emphasis on spinal mobility, balance, core strength, yeah, OK, everywhere. It’s not about doing more, better, faster. It’s about quality. “The way I felt for a long time was I watched all these amazing, talented gymnasts and acrobats and felt like they got handed a secret manual I didn’t get to see,” Finer says. Now, he says, he can go to a dance class and understand the pattern because he was taught a process to do that. He can go to a climbing gym and he might not be the best climber, but he has the strength and mobility to participate. “I have freedom in my body now,” Finer says. “It’s so satisfying and liberating.” What I loved: When you

walk through the door, the first thing you see is a place to put your shoes and a sign that reads, “Check your ego here.” I think every gym, especially in Boulder, should have that sign. It was so easy to be there. I learned a ton about my body and had a blast. I felt like the teachers read me the intro in that secret manual on movement, and I didn’t want them to stop. I am intrigued by the philosophies taught here and delighted by the comfort of approaching difficult physical tasks with manageable steps. “We appeal to nerds. We’re just nerds who happen to move our bodies around,” Finer says. What I didn’t like: That I had to leave after class was done to go to work. That was the worst part. The biggest concern by other people is whether the class has a cardio component, Bernstein says. “The answer to that is of course we do, but we do it in a different sense,” he says. “We’re not going to send people out on a run, just to simply attack cardio. We are never looking at it from just one perspective.” How I felt after the class: All. Jazzed. Up. Also, I was sore for approximately ever. Aimee Heckel: twitter.com/ Aimeemay

“Most important is you become pain-free, because you decompress,” DePaloPeterson says. The studio has nine different Towers, which limits the class size. When: Regular classes are offered two to five times a day (mostly in the morning) with more to come. Privates are by appointment. Space is limited, so contact the studio to reserve a spot. The studio also offers other Gyrotonic equipment and specialized equipment classes. What to prepare: Wear comfortable clothes, no shoes, socks optional. Everything else is provided. Muscles worked: You will mobilize your spine, stimulate your nervous system, hydrate the fascia, open up energetic pathways of the body and more. I especially felt it in my

hips. Later that day, they felt achy and slightly sore in an unusual way. DePalo-Peterson says that’s because the alignment of my sacrum changed to align with my pubic bone, and I dropped my ribs from narrowing my pelvis — all while using deep, tiny, connecting muscles. “You should feel a softness and ease, but strengthening in the places that need strength,” DePalo-Peterson says. What I loved: First, the spiraling felt so wonderful. Better than a massage. So I wanted to be there. It’s rare to find a workout so effective that feels so good. My core felt totally on after class, and my body felt connected. Best of all, five days later, that feeling had not left. I am intrigued by the strengthening I felt in my deep hip muscles.

Based on how good my body felt after class, I expected sessions to cost $35 to $40. I am shocked these classes are so inexpensive. Shocked enough to immediately email my workout buddy and rally her to start going with me. What I didn’t like: Right now, there are only classes in the mornings, which may exclude some people, based on their schedules. How I felt after the class: Tall, relaxed, wrung out. I was surprised to feel slightly sore as the day went on and for several days after. But I also felt calm and focused, and I noticed my posture was excellent all week. If I can make the morning schedule work, you will see me here regularly off the clock. This is a new fave. Aimee Heckel: twitter.com/ Aimeemay

Mental from page 20 for help, they won’t talk about it and they’ll suffer in silence,” said Moon. “Common excuses we hear are ‘I’m the only one going through this problem or mental health issue’ and ‘No one will understand me if I share’ or ‘I don’t need help and can deal with this all on my own.’” The result of such attitudes can be an untreated health concern that’s just as serious as when a minor infection is ignored despite readily available care. Ignorance about available treatment, Moon says, is why

CAPS does outreach work to make sure students know they do not have to deal with mental health issues on their own, and that there are a plethora of resources they can lean on — no stigma attached. “‘My problem is not big enough.’ I’ve heard that one, too, but we will not turn you away,” she says. Like any other medical care, she adds, “It’s important to seek help early.”

Mental health resources Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) 303-492-6766 colorado.edu/counseling Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Psychological Health & Psychiatry (PHP) have combined into one department under Wardenburg Health Services. CAPS, formerly Counseling and Psychological Services, serves all CU students, graduate and undergraduate, international or local. No-appointment-necessary walk-in hours are 10 a.m.4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. Expect a walk-in visit to last about 60 minutes with paperwork, possible wait time and a 10-15 minute assessment. After this assessment, all students can access six counseling sessions per school year free of charge and medication management visits, and as many free groups and workshops as they desire. Group and workshop offerings are listed online. After initial contact with CAPS or another provider, PHP can be the best choice for ongoing mental health issues. PHP treatment is included under the Student Gold Health Insurance Plan or is otherwise fee-based. As a psychiatry practice, PHP can prescribe medication and treat mental illnesses in addition to providing talk therapy. The newly merged CAPS department is still in the same two locations: the Center for Community and Wardenburg Health Center. Muenzinger’s Raimy Psychology Clinic 303-492-5177 colorado.edu/clinicalpsychology/raimy-clinic The Raimy Psychology Clinic offers low-cost psychiatric treatment to students, faculty, staff and adults in the wider community. The clinic is able to do so because it is a training site for graduate students in the Clinical Psychology PhD program, though graduate school therapists are supervised by licensed psychologists and other mental health professionals. After a free intake evaluation, fees are based on a sliding scale. Off-campus options If you carry private insurance, the Boulder community has a wide selection of mental health therapists and other resources likely covered under your plan. CAPS is an excellent source for recommendations and contact information.

She led the cycling portion of class, and Emma Updike, the co-owner of the Boulder Dailey Method studio, taught the second portion of class. Updike, of Boulder, is a lifelong athlete who discovered The Dailey Method eight years ago and taught at the Denver studio for two years. What is the workout?

Dailey Cycle is a new class that features 40 minutes on an indoor cycling bike and 20 minutes on a mat on the floor to focus on flexibility as well as arm and abdominal strength. It brings more cardio to the body sculpting and stretching of The Dailey Method (a studio known for its ballet barre classes). The cycling is beat-driven and monitored on a personal screen, where you can track your watts, beats per minute, distance and estimated calories burned. The Dailey Method also Cliff Grassmick / Staff Photographer offers a Dailey Cycle45 class, Diana Serpe, left, Erika Peterson and Erin Petruch take a Dailey Cycling class at the Dailey Method in Boulder. which is 45 minutes of Dailey Cycle fuses the body sculpting and flexibility aspects of The Dailey Method with the cardiovascular

The studio has offered this class since Jan. 20 but has been offering only samples of the Dailey Cycle hybrid class and will roll out regular sessions in March. The newest Dailey Method franchises are all opening with a cycling class now, says Updike. She says clients want diverse exercise options. “In the crazy haven that is Boulder, where everybody does 17 million different workouts before 5 a.m., you have to offer something different and new,” Updike says. “Barre has a place. It’s a great, strengthening body workout, but there’s also a cardio component.” She says some people alternate cardio and barre workouts, while the more hard-core Boulderites take the Cycle45 and barre classes back to back. It lives under the guise of a rainbow covered in soft fur. The feline has the power to lurch the human body into an extreme immune-defense response to purge Fel d 1 — a mix of kitten saliva, urine and dander proteins. Mental from page 35 young adults seek mental health services include anxiety, depression, relationship problems and addiction, and such issues are often not mental illnesses. But young adults should ask for help when any mental health concern is affecting their quality of life — or seems to be affecting the life of a friend or loved one. In terms of possible warning signs in yourself or others, “The biggies are isolation, when somebody starts dropping out of contact, not returning phone calls,” said Markle, who notes that lack of communication or troubling communication can also be detected on social media. “Or maybe they’re staying in bed, not going to class, coming home late, being under the influence on a regular basis or their hygiene isn’t good,” she said. “Maybe you’re not seeing them eat, or they’re not going to the cafeteria

with you anymore.” Whether you feel yourself falling into these behaviors or worry about such signs in others, CAPS should be your first stop or first recommendation. Even if its counseling and group work are not the best fit for a specific mental health concern, they’re the epicenter of all available help, able to connect students with other resources both on and off campus. First and foremost, though, bring up the subject. Talk about mental health. Don’t be afraid to speak about how you’re feeling or to ask others about themselves, in both cases with kindness and without judgement. The more frank, caring conversations we have about mental health, the more we decrease negative stigma. “Walk the talk. The more you’re open, the more a friend or family member will be open with you,” said

Moon. “I think any transition or major change like going off to college will really test you, but it’s a great learning opportunity and growth opportunity.” So, ask for help and be of help. During a possibly dark and dangerous time for someone, a simple and kind intervention to show you care could drastically change or even save a life.
