How safe is your smart house? By James Figy, Angie’s List (TNS)

mean a big difference in system operability, reliability and security,” says Dave Pedigo, senior director of learning and emerging trends for the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA).

It’s called the “internet of things.” And it’s made up of smart devices that allow homeowners to control a light switch or thermostat, lock doors and close the garage, and watch surveillance feeds of their home with a smartphone or tablet. But as the internet of things expands, and our wireless world impacts more moving parts in the real world, homeowners and industry experts continue to question the security and reliability of smart home technology. Stay in control of your home Ethical hacker Daniel Crowley works as a senior security consultant for the SpiderLabs team at Trustwave, an international information security company headquartered in Chicago. Crowley co-authored a report titled “Home Invasion 2.0” about security flaws in common smart-home devices. “People are still finding very silly flaws in smart-home devices,” he says. The report lists a number of devices and how the researchers hacked into them. The researchers concluded: “Considering that many of these devices have control over the physical world, the poor security measures suggest that introducing network-controlled embedded devices into one’s home or business puts one at risk for theft or damage.”

With the Philips Hue smart bulb, homeowners can control their interior lights from an app on their phone. (Photo courtesy of Philips Hue)

According to Crowley, it doesn’t take a skilled hacker to exploit known security issues. “With some of the flaws, it’s incredibly easy,” he says. “With one of the flaws that we found, it was possible for anybody who could do a Google search and click buttons to take control of somebody’s home.” This is why it’s important to hire a skilled and experienced professional to install and configure your system. Protecting one’s home from a virtual invasion takes knowledge, skill and the right hardware. “Just a small error on a checkbox here or there can

Fix the problem before it starts According to industry experts, homeowners still face two main problems with smart home technology: – The different devices developed by different manufacturers don’t communicate well with each other, which can cause malfunctions or security breaches. – Homeowners have to use too many apps – one for the lights, one for the thermostat and so on. New hardware and mobile apps, such as Wink, allow homeowners to control their smart devices with one program, instead of a different one for every device in the home. Sean Weiner, CEDIA member and owner of Starr Systems Design in Baltimore, says problems often occur when homeowners install too many devices on a network without the help of an expert. Too many apps and too many devices that can’t communicate with one another slow down the network. To secure your smart home, Crowley suggests putting all home automation systems on a separate secure personal network, so their security issues don’t compromise personal information on your computers or other electronics. He also advises regularly checking for updates, which patch security

breaches. According to Crowley, when ethical hackers expose a security flaw, they publish the findings online to inform the public and hold manufacturers responsible. So before installing that new security camera, search online for the product’s name along with “security flaw.” Who’s responsible for the security breach? Sometimes manufacturers do fix the problem. Recently, when researchers discovered that WiFi-enabled LIFX LED light bulbs could be hacked and give away personal network information, the company released a patch soon after. But security updates aren’t effective unless the homeowner constantly checks for them. Weiner says the industry continues to enhance the security of these devices, but technology takes time to evolve. “There are rarely guarantees, but at this point, we have not seen large-scale attempts to hack home automation systems,” Weiner says. “If we want that to continue, it is the obligation of every homeowner, integrator and manufacturer to be mindful of the potential dangers and take every precaution possible to protect the integrity of the systems they install.” James Figy is a reporter for Angie’s List, a trusted provider of local consumer reviews and an online marketplace of services from top-rated providers. 3 hacks to make moving home painless, according to experts By Sophie Miura, Domaine (TNS)

Unboxing your wares doesn’t need to be a chore.

Moving house can be an exciting transition, but when the buzz from finding your new home and planning the decor has dulled, there’s one task that fills most movers with dread: unpacking. If the prospect of unboxing your possessions in your new home seems daunting, there’s a new service you need to know about. John-Morgan and Lauren Bush are the founders of Unpackd NYC, a genius packing service that promises to take the pain out of moving house. How? The husbandand-wife duo will do the task you dread most and unpack your boxes for one room – or an entire house. Yes, while they take care of admin and style your new home with

items you already own, you’re free to have brunch, hit the gym or do whatever you please. The entrepreneurial pair tells Elle Decor that unboxing your wares doesn’t need to be a chore. They mastered the art of moving during a transition from Boston to New York and have developed some handy hacks to take the pain out of the process. Here are the expert tips they swear by: 1. Unload boxes straight from the van to their designated room: Load the van so boxes for each room are stored together, then unload them directly into their new space. Unloading boxes into an entryway or holding area might seem fast, but it’s a short-term solution that will increase your workload. 2. Style your bedroom first: According to John-Morgan,

this is the most important room to prioritize. “Create a perfect bedroom to retreat to so that you can relax when it seems like everything else in your place is falling down,” he says. 3. Don’t delay unpacking your closet: “People often save their closet for last, because it takes the most time,” Bush tells Elle Decor. “But you can get rid of some of your biggest boxes that contain most of your day-to-day stuff if you tackle your closet early on.” Refresh your closet by tossing mismatched hangers and replacing them with one style for a coordinated, c lutter-free look. Thompson Daviau Realty offers home-buying guidelines In light of National Preparedness Month, Janet Thompson and Kirsty Daviau, of Thompson Daviau Realty, list the top five tips when preparing to purchase a new home. BOULDER – Janet Thompson and Kirsty Daviau have over 20 years’ experience between them in the local real estate market, and have both earned the Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) and the Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR) designations. “A big part of our business, naturally, is working with buyers,” says Thompson. “We tell them that there are many things to consider when buying a home.” No. 1: Talk to a lender. “First and foremost, it is important to talk to a local reputable lender,” says Daviau. “It’s very important to know your budget. The lender will tell you how much you can borrow to have a monthly payment with which you are comfortable. No. 2: Determine how much space is required.

“This is not just about square footage or the number of rooms, but rather how those work together,” adds Thompson. “You can probably answer how many bedrooms you are looking for fairly quickly, but is one to be used as an office and/or do you really need a guest room? How important is a private landscaped yard or neighborhood pool?” No. 3: Decide on location. “You can look for your perfect house in the best location, but most people have a budget that can make this difficult to find,” says Daviau. “So what is your priority? Do you want to live where you can get to shops and restaurants in just a few minutes? How long of a commute to your place of business are you wanting? Are local schools important? Where is your balance between the house

you want and the location you are looking for?” No. 4: Decide if the home needs remodeling. “If you find a house that is move-in ready, perhaps you can make a larger down payment and move right in after closing,” says Thompson. “Remodeling is a lot of work and can cost a lot, but you could end up with a house that suits you better.” No. 5: Be somewhat price-flexible. It is necessary to have a budget and to try to stay within it. “You need to buy a house that you can live in comfortably and be happy with your monthly payment,” concludes Daviau. “That said, it is also important to not get completely fixated on a number. If you find a house that is ‘the one’ and you can afford it, don’t pass it up because the price is just over the number you set in

DESIGN RECIPES

How to make your first house a home

A living room before.

By Cathy Hobbs, Tribune News Service (TNS) You just decided to purchase your dream home. Now what? Whether you are flying solo, part of a newly married couple or two people who have decided to simply live under the same roof, purchasing a home can be an overwhelming task. Kitchens and bathrooms Bathrooms are very personal and can often be a key selling point for potential buyers. Kitchens remain the heart of the home. If you are building a home, buying an existing home in which you can pick your own finishes or you are just looking to share your personal spin, here are some basic rules: - Select finishes that are neutral, not trendy. This will help when it comes time to sell your home. - Purchase high quality appliances. High quality appliances will not only outlast the inexpensive ones, but will also add value. - Consider mixing finishes, from mixing different types of tile to mixing woods. Bedrooms and living rooms: how to begin Start with each person determining their own personal design style. This may mean walking the floors of local furniture stores, scoping out flea markets or ripping images from 8

pieces first then your accessories. Your furniture enhances the space, and the accessories enhance the furniture.

Identify your personal style Typically, nearly everyone’s design style falls into one of these four categories, and then there are sub-sections from there. - Traditional - Contemporary - Modern - Global

Use universal artwork Instead of photos of one family dominating, purchase pieces of art. Great art doesn’t need to be expensive. Consider purchasing artwork from street artists, small galleries and even art students.

Select a signature piece After selecting your personal design category, narrow it down a bit more and define each person’s style more specifically. From here, each person should select one signature piece that each person feels defines them the most. It can be an area rug with a big, bold graphic pattern or a fabulous piece of artwork or a gorgeous chandelier. Whatever piece they choose will serve as the anchor for the room and help fill in the rest of the blanks of the decor. By selecting a single signature piece that is special to each person, it helps ensure harmony and serves as the foundation to build a design palette. Purchase large pieces first then accessorize Once you have selected signature pieces that best represent each person’s personal taste and style, choose your largest

Need help? Why not hire a professional? When looking to hire an interior designer, be sure to do your homework. The first place to start is with a professional organization such as ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). Here, you will find a host of professionally trained interior designers in your local area. Other places to look include IIDA (International Interior Design Association), U.S. Green Building Council (for a list of professionals specializing in sustainable design) and AIA (American Institute of Architects). When selecting the right interior designer for you. I would suggest interviewing approximately three different designers. Be sure to ask to see samples of their work; nearly all interior designers have websites with numerous portfolio photographs posted. You may also wish to see their work in person. Don’t be afraid to ask an interior designer about their education and credentials. These credentials

can also be confirmed through sites like asid.org and ncidq.org. Beyond an interior designer’s credentials and work on paper, making your interior designer selection may just come down to personality and whether or not you feel you can trust and would enjoy working with this professional for what may be as long as a year or possibly longer. How interior designers charge for their services Most interior designers either charge a flat design fee or hourly. Hourly fees typically range from $100 to $300 per hour, based on the designer’s experience and years in business. In addition to a design fee, designers also charge a certain percentage for items that are sourced or purchased through them, typically between 10 and 35 percent. Expect a professional interior designer to also charge for such extras as drafting services, creating construction drawings, renderings, shopping, phone calls and overseeing construction management. HOME AND GARDEN

Bulb planting time is upon us BOULDER COUNTY – One of the best things a gardener can do for themselves is shake off the end-of-season blues, get out, and get planting. What you pop into the ground now will result in an invigorating, eyepopping start to next spring’s season when the bulbs you plant come out to play. Dig deep into your well of stamina, get out the trowels, your kneeling cushions and start planting: finally the time has arrived to pop those bulbs in the ground. For best success, keep these tips in mind: – With bulbs, size matters. Choose large, well-formed bulbs that are blemish free. – Plant bulbs when soil temperatures are cool, 55 to 58 degrees. – Dig holes four times the height of the bulb, and place bulbs tips up. – There’s no need to fertilize at planting, instead, fertilize in spring when shoots first show. – Add four inches of mulch to buffer soil temperatures. What’s hot in bulbs

CAROL O’MEARA

Colorado State University Extension, Boulder County right now: Foxy Foxtrot tulip. A gorgeous, double-flowered early tulip is an apricot and rose colored stunner. Foxy Foxtrot’s ruffled petals mix well with other colors, especially purples and whites. It grows well in containers so gardeners in deer country can place them up on decks away from munching animals. Zones 3–8. Daffodils (Narcissus spp.) are an enchanting group that, as a bonus, is deer resistant. And if you’re thinking daffodils are limited to the singlecup with petals, explore your options: Hoop

Petticoats (Bulbocodiums) look like the dresses they’re nicknamed after, with deep, bell-like flowers. Multi-flowered, nodding Triandus, and single flowered cyclamineus types will woo you with back swept petals (reflexed), or fragrance. And those with split coronas are simply magnificent. Look for the fantastic Tête Bouclé, a two-toned jewel of yellow and orange. The double blossoms arrive early to midseason. Or add in the large, ruffled cups of Tromba Rosa, with its orange-pink trumpet and white petals. Zones 3–8. Double flowers aren’t limited to tulips or daffodils; hyacinths have them too. With Blue Tango, hyacinth lovers get a densely packed display of the perfumed bulb. They’re harder to find, so if you’re looking to add them, shop now. Earning the name Crown Imperial for good reason, Fritillaria imperialis’ tall, tufted stalks cause strolling neighbors to stop and stare. Wreathed in

Unusual in many gardens, this bulb is a sure winner of hearts when planted in clumps of three to five. But these bulbs are temperamental. If bruised in shipping they rot instead of thrive, so check the quality closely when you purchase or receive yours from mail order. Plant in full sun with good drainage. Zones 4–7. work might seem minor, but fixing them now not only means you’ll have less to worry when the inspection is done, it also shows both the inspector and the buyers that you’ve taken good care of your home. One of the smartest things you can do to get your home ready for sale is to hire your own home inspector to go through it before it goes on the market. If problems are discovered, you have the time to either repair these yourself or disclose them upfront to the buyer,

eliminating the possibility that the buyer will ask you to make repairs later.

Home inspection tips for sellers BOULDER – One of the best ways to make certain your home attracts buyers and the highest possible sales price is to make sure it’s “dressed for success,” both inside and out. A fresh coat of paint and some new landscaping may seem like obvious first steps in preparing your home for sale. However, when it comes to the home inspection, there’s much more to do. Beginning with the exterior, repair things like loose steps, disconnected gutters and rotted trim. Look for anything that’s September 22-23, 2016

been neglected and needs repair, like a rotted windowsill or missing roof shingle. A pair of binoculars is a good tool to use for the roof review. Besides missing shingles, look for loose metal flashing around chimneys and plumbing vents, a common cause of leaks. Inside, give your mechanical systems an honest assessment. If your heating and cooling system hasn’t been recently inspected and/or serviced, do it now. If you are aware of any minor plumbing or

s a new home buyer, you get to make a lot of choices. The most important decision of all is choosing your homebuilder. In Broomfield, families who are looking for unparalleled livability, efficiency and quality are choosing Wonderland Homes. The new Harvest and Legacy Series single-family homes at Quail Creek are getting rave reviews from those who have visited the community and toured the model homes. So it’s no surprise that many people are choosing a home here for their very own. The new Quail Creek community is ideally located near 136th Ave. and Zuni, just 20 minutes from downtown Denver and 30 minutes from Boulder. Residents are just a short walk away from shopping, dining and highly-rated schools.

Harvest and Legacy homes by Wonderland Homes add an exciting new dimension to your lifestyle. Buyers can choose from seven new two-story home plans, priced from the $400s, with floor plans from 1,995 to 2,841 square feet. Plans feature three or four bedrooms, plus optional finished basements. A menu of elevation options for each home adds diversity and modern appeal to the community. Options include frontfacing or alley-loading garages on park-like courtyards. Many families got their first look at these homes several weeks ago, during the Quail Creek grand opening. “We want to thank everyone for coming to see us,” said Mike Davidson, vice president of sales and marketing. “The visitors were very enthusiastic, and their comments just confirmed that we are delivering the right homes,

in the right place at the right time. In particular, they said that they like the open floor plans, outdoor living areas, and Energy Star construction.” Open plans let parents in the kitchen stay involved with kids doing their homework or watching TV in the living area. Rooms are filled with light from vaulted ceilings and generous window placement. Wonderland Homes doesn’t cut corners on the windows, even on the sides of homes where other builders may scrimp to reduce costs. The inviting outdoor living spaces bid you to relax and enjoy the views. Every Quail Creek home backs to open space or trails, so you are just steps away from more outdoor fun. Wonderland Homes has been building award-winning homes and communities in Colorado

for 50 years and across three generations. Locally owned and just the right size, Wonderland designs one-of-a-kind homes for a one-of-a-kind you. Seven models, and your choice of elevations The Harvest Series includes three unique plans: The Fillmore (2,493 finished square feet, from $462,900), Grant (2,532 finished square feet, from $473,900) and Monroe (2,841 finished square feet, from $489,900). The traditional architecture and frontloading garages deliver classic appeal. Legacy Series homes feature alley-loading garages on parklike courtyards. Plans include The Jefferson (1,995 finished square feet, from $402,900), McKinley (2,097 finished square feet, from $419,900), Harrison (2,261 finished square feet, from $435,900), and Madison (2,291 finished square feet, from $454,900). Buyers work directly with professional interior designers to choose the fixtures and finishes of their new home. Wonderland’s standard finishes are equivalent to other builders’ expensive upgrades.

HOME ORGANIZATION

The simple organization hacks tidy people do every day By Sophie Miura Domaine (TNS)

swear by for an organized workspace.

Ask me to locate an electronic bill and a quick Command + F will retrieve my archive in an instant. Ask me to find hard-copy medical records or receipts, and that’s a completely different story. If, like me, you’ve mastered a digital filing system but don’t quite know how to organize life’s administrative paperwork, it’s time to declutter your desk. The digital age might have replaced mounting paper bills with a bursting inbox, but according to Martha Stewart, a filing system is crucial for important documents – something many millennials overlook. Guilty? Here are five simple hacks tidy people

Centralize paperwork Leaving items scattered around the house or creating multiple filing spots is an easy way to lose track of paperwork. Choose one place to store all important documents, ideally near a computer so you can cross-reference soft and hard copies. Reduce receipts Holding onto important receipts and warranty information might seem like a safe bet, but it can quickly spiral out of control. “One of the things that causes chaos is that people don’t know what they need, so they save everything,” says Julie Morgenstern, author of Organizing From the Inside Out. She suggests

making an automatic toss list for unnecessary receipts and storing the rest in an accordion file by month. Review this at tax time, and toss any papers that aren’t relevant. Create a mail sorting area To prevent paperwork from piling up, add a wastepaper bin to your entryway so that you’re forced to keep or toss mail straight away. Sort bills by month, not type Professional organizer Barry Izsak says it’s a mistake to file bills based on type. Instead, he recommends organizing paperwork by month or scanning the copy to add it to your digital system before recycling the original.

Professional organizer Barry Izsak recommends organizing paperwork by month or scanning the copy to add it to your digital system before recycling the original.

Use a safe-deposit box Some important documents should be stored away from the rest of your filing in a safe-deposit box. This includes birth certificates, medical records and legal documents. Make sure you keep these together

and retain copies for quick reference. Get the latest on home decor trends, design ideas, shopping guides and food news, and take a look inside your favorite celebrity homes on DomaineHome.com.

DESIGN RECIPES

Dress your shelves to impress By Cathy Hobbs Tribune News Service (TNS) From bookshelves to China cabinets and built-in bookcases, there are opportunities to make a bold decor statement using a technique called shelf dressing. Shelf dressing is a technique long used by home stagers and stylists to add interest and creativity to spaces that may otherwise feel bland. Gone are the days where bookshelves are just for books, or built-in China cabinets reserved for only for China and crystal. These days, many homeowners want to display decorative items that can range from books to blooms, decorative items, travel finds and treasured mementos. When looking for ways to style bookshelves and built-ins, here are five general design rules to follow. Less is more You don’t have to have an item on every single shelf. Displaying fewer items will help your decor stand out.

Use florals Florals not only add color, but texture as well. Look for interesting books From design books to those on fashion or those with colorful covers or splines, books can be an affordable decor item for shelf dressing. Mix materials Don’t be afraid to mix materials and finishes. Mixing glass with ceramics can be interesting and appealing.

Mixing books with decorative items and blooms is a creative way to style shelves.

Go metallic Metallics remain hot in home decor. From silver to gold and brass, feel free to mix and match different metallic finishes. If you’ve ever moved into an apartment with a balcony, you know the initial excitement that comes with daydreams of long summer nights spent outdoors, visions of morning coffees under the sun, and aspirations of neighborly cocktail parties at sunset. The initial intention is always to create an outdoor space to rival the greatest landscape artists, so why does our outdoor decor always seem to become an afterthought? Even though outdoor spaces can’t always be used year-round, it’s no excuse to leave them undecorated. If you’ve reached September and your balcony is still a sad empty space – or if you’ve haphazardly purchased an outdoor set at the local hardware store and called it a day – it’s not too late to make your alfresco space Insta-worthy. With a few simple tricks, you can whip your balcony into shape and even extend it into the fall months. Wait no more – the time to transform

your balcony is now. Start with plants An outdoor area should never be without greenery. Flower boxes and potted plants are an easy, low-cost way to infuse greens into your outdoor space, no heavy lifting required. Ground it with a rug Outdoor rugs are prettier than ever, and companies like Dash & Albert are coming up with hundreds of fun and weatherresistant patterns. You ground your living room with a rug, so why not do the same with your balcony? Embrace the bistro table Nothing is more satisfying than having breakfast outside and basking in the sun before a long workday. When space is limited, all you need are a couple of chairs and a smaller bistro table. When in doubt, do stripes Outdoor stripes are quintessential summer decorating. If you’re upholstering furniture, September 22-23, 2016

purchasing outdoor pillows, or shopping for an umbrella, always look at thick stripes in bold colors to bring life to your space. Plant a vertical garden. The easiest way to hide unsightly neighboring balconies is to block the view with a vertical garden. Simply install a trellis, and hang away. Just make sure your building approves it before making significant changes. Throw in pillows. Don’t think you’re limited to the pillows that came with your outdoor sofa. Just as outdoor rugs are now more varied than ever, so are their pillow counterparts. This means you can infuse the same decor personality indoors and out! Consider lighting. Hanging out on your balcony on a balmy summer night is a luxury – as long as you can see

around you. If your balcony is covered, consider hanging string lights to create a starry nighttime effect. If it isn’t, wall sconces or even candle-filled hurricanes are great alternatives. Put in the finishing touches. Add final decorating touches with vases, candles and other accents to finish off the space. Treat your balcony as you would any other room in your house to get a layered décor effect. Warm it up for fall. When temperatures start cooling down in September, extend the season by furnishing your space with throws and sheepskin rugs that will keep you and your guests cozy. Do’s and don’ts for luxurious guest bathrooms

pooktacular

Sat

By Cathy Hobbs, Tribune News Service (TNS) Guest bathrooms are often an integral part of the home, typically the one and only bathroom seen and used by guests. In styling or laying out a guest bathroom, there are some basic do’s and don’ts to help ensure a guest bathroom is always guestready and showcased in the best possible light.

Enter Your Home by October 16!

Grab your kids and out ghoul your neighbors with the first annual Halloween Home Decorating Contest presented by atHome Colorado.

DO’S Do make your guest bathroom a functional space in your home. Ideally a guest bathroom should not be used for storage or cleaning products or supplies and should feel fresh open and airy. Do use florals. While fresh flowers are ideal, in many instances it simply is not feasible. An attractive artificial arrangement will do the trick. Do incorporate color into your guest bathroom. A pop of color can go a long way. Do have a fresh set of towels hanging. Many guests may be turned off by the idea of using the towels you and your family use for bathing. Do infuse fresh fragrance in your space in the form of candles. Candles can also help add color. DON’TS Don’t make your guest bathroom an afterthought. Guests

will certainly not feel welcome in a space that does not feel clean and fresh. Don’t ignore the opportunity to include artwork. Artwork helps to add interest, especially in small spaces. Don’t only showcase your guest bathroom when guests are on the way. Ideally, a guest bathroom should always be guest-ready. Don’t ignore lighting. A welllit bathroom is always more appealing. Don’t overdo it. Guest bathrooms tend to be small, and you will not want to overcrowd your space.
