HOME DÉCOR
The biggest holiday decor trends, according to a Williams-Sonoma stylist By Sacha Strebe, Domaine (TNS) Nothing compares to the nostalgia we all feel once the holiday season hits. This really is the most wonderful time of the year – a moment for us to sit back and reflect on all we’ve achieved, embrace our family and friends (without the nagging of work e-mails), indulge in the art of feasting and prepare ourselves (both emotionally and physically) for the new year ahead. If you’re feeling the festive spirit too, then it’s officially time to set the mood and create a space where memories can be made. While many of us can’t wait to break out the tinsel and glitter balls, the green-and-red Christmas home decor isn’t everybody’s taste or cultural tradition. It is possible to style a home without the classic ornaments and still fill it up with holiday cheer. To find out how, we tapped the WilliamsSonoma Home’s VP of product development, Lainey Hollis, to share her holiday decor trend predictions along with a few tips on how to style it yourself at home (without denting your wallet too much). MYDOMAINE: What is the number one rule for holiday decorating at home? LAINEY HOLLIS: The holidays are a time of year when you can really go all out with decorating. More is more. Focus on laying in elements versus editing. I personally love adding warmth throughout the home with fresh greenery and live flowers, like magnolia leaves and bright red amaryllis plants. I also always
recommend making any space your own by decorating with an abundance of your favorite personal items like family photos or treasured ornaments. MD: What are some holidayinspired trends for the living room that aren’t too traditional or kitschy? LH: There are two decorating trends I’m currently loving. 1) Bring out the bar cart. They’re a showpiece and add instant holiday glamor to any space, big or small. Bar carts are extremely functional for entertaining guests and look festive with brightly colored glassware and greenery. I also love using them as a chic accent table beside a sofa. 2) Add a layer of warmth with lambswool throws and pillows. They’re a top pick for cold winter months, perfect for the holiday season when you just want to curl up by the fireplace. Throws and pillows are a great way to transition a space from season to season. MD: Can you share your holiday entryway dos and don’ts? LH: Everyone loves a gorgeous mirror. Dress it up by flanking it with sconces or live topiaries. A beautiful console also makes a great first impression as you enter a home. It’s functional and serves as the perfect foundation for decorative pieces. You can’t go wrong with adding an orchid in a blue-and-white cachepot. It’s elevated, classic, and festive all at the same time. MD: What are the big holiday decor trends for the dining room?

LH: Lighting always sets the tone of any space. We’ve noticed that customers are loving dramatic chandeliers. The right chandelier, especially for the holidays, makes a stunning focal point above your dining room table. Look for cues for shape and scale from your table. I love pairing our linear Nash Chandelier over a rectangular dining table. We also love the combination of candlelight and crystal in the dining room. We offer an entire collection of crystal in geometric shapes – from block vases to hurricanes to sculptural candlesticks. Candlelight illuminates these pieces and adds a stunning glow to the entire table. MD: How can we bring that festive cheer into the kitchen? LH: A beautiful oversize bowl on a kitchen table filled with an abundance of fruit is such a welcoming centerpiece and serves as a focal point in the kitchen. Stylish choices are persimmons and pomegranates. MD: Share some of the new tablescape trends you’re seeing (that aren’t green and red). LH: Candlelight is taking center stage on the dining table. I’ve noticed a trend of creating vignettes by grouping together candlesticks and hurricanes of varying heights. You can also add short vases filled with tight floral arrangements for a finishing touch. MD: How do you make a home modern and fresh during the holidays while still ensuring that traditional/classic feeling is present? LH: We love giving a fresh

take to classic pieces. This year we all about tartan, but tartan reimagined. Our in-house design team reinvented something ultra traditional and made it feel modern by creating oversize tartan prints with textiles for pillows, throws, and bedding. We also took the traditional tartan print and gave it a new look by printing it on silk at a bias angle for throw pillows. You can keep tradition alive by combining modern styles with traditional ones. We love mixing tartan pillows with leather, hide, velvet and even equestrian-inspired printed pillows. MD: What is the biggest mistake we make when decorating for the holidays? LH: Just have fun and don’t stress; let creativity guide you. Express your personal style. Even one or two pieces can transform a room. Get the latest on home decor trends, design ideas, shopping guides and food news, and take a look inside your favorite celebrity homes on DomaineHome.com.

HOME AND GARDEN
Soften the season with historic décor BOULDER – In the hustle and bustle of holiday prep, sleek, modern styles often grab our eye. Metallic trees, chrome Menorahs, clear glass Kinaras, CAROL and silver solstice O’MEARA bells all look Colorado State lovely as they University Extension Boulder County grace our homes. But a gardener in winter yearns for green and growing things, so this year, add in a little history to soften your home. Think past the mistletoe and wreaths. Victorian kissing balls, orange pomanders, woven cloveaccented baskets, berry strands, or dried citrus rounds all bring the past forward into our homes. They’re easy to make and can be customized to work with the colors and style of your home. Victorian kissing balls can be formal or whimsical, depending on your desire, and are often hung as a substitute for mistletoe. Though traditionally made from boxwood
cutting, any type of evergreen can work. What you use to make your kissing ball says a lot about you – lavender and rosemary signify loyalty and devotion, thyme promotes courage, and mistletoe symbolizes good fortune and fertility. Before constructing your kissing ball, soak greenery to be used in water overnight. Then take a round potato or apple and tie it with a narrow, decorative ribbon. The moisture in the potato/apple helps keep the cut greenery fresh. Be sure the ribbon is cross-tied to ensure that the kissing ball hangs securely (center ribbon on top of the potato/apple, hold ribbon in place and turn potato/apple over, cross the ribbon and pull it tight, turn potato/apple over and bring ribbon together at top). Insert evenly sized sprigs of evergreens, boxwood, holly, mistletoe, or woody herbs into the potato/apple until it’s completely covered. Make a starter hole for each with a metal skewer. Decorate it with whatever else you wish. Then fasten a long piece of wire or ribbon to the ball so it can hang.

holders for small amounts of fruits, nuts, or candies and designed to hang on the tree. Often bedecked with cloves or felt, the little oval baskets are easy to decorate, then fill during a party or for a holiday gathering. Grapes, sekel pears, or cuties are the ideal size. Don’t forget a few solstice candles for lighting on the 21st; beeswax makes a soft glow for welcoming the turn from short days to long. Nestle the candle on holly and ivy, or other evergreens and surround the candle itself with cinnamon sticks woven with twine. Then feast, be merry and enjoy your holiday décor. Give wreaths pizzazz by adding contrasting textures. Bundles of cinnamon sticks tied with ribbon add seasonal accent, and dried fruit slices provide color. To make your own dried fruit slices, you’ll need a dehydrator, as drying fruit takes eight to twelve hours. Slice oranges, limes, lemons or other citrus into quarter-inch thick slices, lay them on their sides so the slices include all the segments. Keep slices uniform for best drying results; if the thickness varies greatly, some slices won’t dry evenly. Dehydrate the fruit for eight to twelve hours, checking slices for doneness. The finished product should be dry but still pliable. For a Colonial American tradition, whip up a pomander ball from an orange and cloves. The pomander dries beautifully and gives off an aromatic scent of citrus and cloves. Simply cross-tie a ribbon around an orange, make starter holes with an ice pick, and insert whole cloves into the holes. Leave a little space between the cloves to allow for the orange to shrink as it dries. Spicy baskets are miniature

succulent wreaths, holiday tree ornaments and more. Old-fashioned customer service “We love our customers,” says owner Carol Riggs. “These relationships that we build with people – I think people value that. They are not going to get it from shopping on the Internet or from the big-box stores. The business has been here since 1929; how many businesses are still going, still family run, and still have the same employees that have been here, and customers who have come to us for years, who love plants and flowers?” General Manager Connie Smith says, “We could not achieve this high level of quality and customer service without retaining longterm and dedicated employees. For example, our floral design department of seven has worked for us for a combined 48 years. I have been here almost 25 years. A number of our valued employees return year after year to work in our garden center for the busy season. These are hardy folks who work through heat and cold and cheerfully and enthusiastically help beautify our Boulder
yards. We have had a number of employees who left and returned to work with us again. We call them Boomerangs. “We are a family; we work hard as a team and keep it laid back and fun, too. Many of our customers have said that when they retire they want to come and work for us in our fun and
beautiful environment.” She hires people for their friendliness, if they also have the expertise. “People who work here love what they do, appreciate being paid to be in a beautiful environment, in a business that makes people happy, with lush and comforting giftware and plants. “Our customer service is excellent. We accommodate special orders as much as possible; we try to get our customers what they want in a hard-to-find houseplant or create the look they have in mind with our floral designers. In the summer we do custom outdoor planters for folks through our French Garden Department.” Smith has a bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University in floriculture. She is an avid organic gardener and keeps the greenhouse and shelves at Sturtz and Copeland stocked with everything from green plants and pottery to earth-friendly and organic gardening products. She has handselected over 90 percent of the indoor plants in the greenhouse. “We buy the majority of our outdoor plants from local growers as well as carry seeds from three local companies. This provides customers with an outstanding selection to choose from at each and every visit to Boulder’s best and largest florist and garden center.” This is Christmas central Smith says, “What sets us apart as Christmas tree sellers is that we carry five or six different types of the freshest trees, up to 14- or 15-feet tall – and we can order larger. We do offer our customers delivery as well as set-up in their home. We put it in their stand in

water. People really like that we do delivery and set-up for them – we’ve been doing it for decades. Most customers have fun coming in and picking their tree, or we have other regular customers who call and ask us to do it for them.” She adds, “Our long-time customers know our names, and we know theirs. It’s nice to be part of a community. A lot of new customers see our website and are impressed and come into the store. Then they are impressed and even amazed by the size of the store – they had no idea how big it is.” Flowers are always in season Floral designer Autumn McMurren Lund says, “We do custom floral arrangements and have a big selection. Right now we feature seasonal flowers, including tulips, roses, amaryllis and lilies. There are seven of us here, and we fill orders every day. We’re the largest supplier in Boulder. “We also do custom wreaths for Christmas and have a variety of sizes and of ribbons. We can help you put a wreath together for your front door or elsewhere in your home. We have a great choice of materials you can add, like cones, ribbons and bows, and ornaments. “During the holidays we decorate a lot of parties. The

“natural mountain” theme is popular, with pinecones and fresh evergreens. We get a selection of flowers in daily; I go to the wholesale market every morning and pick them out. Right now we have a variety of roses, lilies, anemones, tulips, and amaryllis in a variety of colors. We also have fresh winter berry – also known as ilex– and holly and mistletoe. Since we’ve been in Boulder so long, most clients trust us to choose their florals, or they’ll bring in an item like a napkin to match colors. “This is a really nice place to come to this season – with fresh trees and wreaths in the back, and
the greenhouse filled with varieties of poinsettias, paper whites, amaryllis and other holiday bloomers. We have a really large walk-in cooler where the selection of fresh flowers are that I have chosen at the wholesaler, and which we get in daily.” Community caring “We give to many local charities and programs,” Smith says. “To name a few: we give gently used flowers to Meals on Wheels weekly. It is so precious to receive calls of appreciation from older folks whose day was brightened by their meal served with a few flowers. We support the
arts with yearly donations to the Colorado Music Festival. We have supported garden education with plant contributions to the Growe Foundation, which does school gardens. We have given discounts to City of Boulder volunteers who are involved in the adopt-a-flowerbed program.” Visit Sturtz & Copeland Enjoy a visit to the garden center and greenhouse at 2851 Valmont in Boulder. Ready to sell? Five home projects to tackle first BOULDER – You’ve lived in your home a long time. Long enough that the wobbly handrail on the staircase doesn’t faze you. The moldy caulk in the shower SEAN doesn’t get a MCILLWAIN second glance. Mod Boulder The inch-wide Real Estate gap under the front door looks normal. But it’s time to wake up. If you’re thinking of selling your home, there are some projects that you should tackle before your listing goes live. Your home is a major investment, and potential buyers see it the same way. In order to make a good first impression and a good profit, here are five (relatively easy!) tasks to ensure the sale of your home brings in top dollar. Nice and neutral I know, I know, that deep maroon in your dining room brings back memories of Memaw’s stately fried chicken dinners, but potential buyers have neither the sentiment nor the time to repaint. Many buyers don’t want to paint before moving in, and bold colors are a deeply personal choice. When putting your home on the market, think neutral shades on the walls – white, eggshell, tan, or a pleasant pewter. This gives your prospective
We all know it: first impressions are everything. Add to the age-old adage the fact that many prospective buyers do a drive-by before scheduling a viewing.
buyers a better chance to connect with your home and imagine their own belongings in it.
may offer rebates or incentives for boosting your home’s efficiency.
Efficiency upgrades Savvy buyers consider more than just aesthetics when purchasing a home; they consider ongoing expenses like upkeep and utility costs. To make your home more efficient and appealing, consider upgrading to appliances with Energy Star ratings and installing a new HVAC system. Don’t have the capital for such big upgrades? Consider improving your home’s energy efficiency by sealing and insulating. Cracks and gaps around doors and windows should be addressed, siding damage should be repaired, and insulation should be checked and bulked up where needed. An added bonus? Your county or local utility company
Clear the clutter Your Faberge egg collection? Sayonara. Caboodle of ceramic cats? Adios. Creepy doll wall? Bye now. Clutter makes a home look small and…well, cluttered. By clearing out the odds and ends, your home will look more like a showroom and less like a museum. It can be overwhelming to tackle such a project, so start small; simply box up your collections and stash them in unseen areas like under the bed. If you’ve got a lot of tchotchkes, consider renting a small storage space while you’re making your home more appealing to buyers. This includes cleaning out closets to show their capacity and emptying the garage. (Gulp.)
Curb appeal We all know it: first impressions are everything. Add to the ageold adage the fact that many prospective buyers do a drive-by before scheduling a viewing, and you’ve got yourself an appointment with your favorite landscaper. By keeping your yard nicely maintained – think tended flower beds, manicured shrubbery, a clutter-free yard – you’ll make a good first impression with prospective buyers. But don’t stop at the greenery; upgrading the mailbox, painting the front door, and repairing the walkway will also help to entice your buyers. Brush up the bathroom Don’t panic: I’m not talking a complete remodel, here. Through small touches like recaulking the shower surround, reglazing the tub, dusting light fixtures and upgrading towel racks, you’ll give your bathroom a renewed, refreshed look. Whichever small touches you choose, be sure to leave the bathroom meticulously clean while your home is on the market. Sweep up stray hairs, keep the mirrors clean, and dust the top of the commode so things stay shiny. A tidy, well-staged home draws more prospective buyers and encourages the spirited bidding war every seller wants. Present your home in its best light, and reap the major rewards.
Politics and home sales – What sellers should know LOVELAND – This recent election has created a national divide. It has fueled emotions, started protests, and even ruined SUZANNE friendships. On PLEWES both sides of RE/MAX Alliance the aisle, people have very strong thoughts and opinions, to the extent that it can impact home sale transactions. That may be surprising, but so is what’s going on in the country right now. If you are looking to sell a home, here are a few things that you should keep in mind. December 16-17, 2016
Eliminate politics from décor Remove any signs of political support or interests from your property before showings. You want home buyers to notice your home and everything it has to offer, instead of being distracted by your belongings and political interests. The more buyers you have interested in your property, the more it will sell for. It’s therefore in your best interest to eliminate anything non-house related that may sway a buyer’s opinion. Avoid political discussions It’s possible that you may interact with potential home buyers either at the open house, during an inspection, or incidentally at other times during the home buying process.
As you exchange pleasantries, avoid political discussions. Whether it’s because you feel strongly about politics or they do, it’s never a good idea to be influenced by it when it comes to negotiating an offer. It’s best to stay focused on topics relevant to the home. Remember the end goal Selling your home is about finding a willing and able buyer and negotiating acceptable terms. Although emotions naturally come into play because of your pride and attachment to your home, it is important to maintain perspective. You and the home buyer do not need to become friends or continue a relationship after the closing. You really only need to agree upon the terms of the sale. Anything

beyond that can be a distraction that can hurt you financially in the end. By focusing on the property and leaving politics out of the equation, you will give yourself the best chance of selling your home with the best terms and price possible. Realtor assistance Your real estate agent plays an important role as an intermediary in your home sale transaction. They can help you make educated decisions when it comes to negotiating with buyers and will keep you focused on the end goal. Suzanne Plewes is a broker associate at RE/MAX Alliance. Write to 750 W. special day during the holidays, the Share-A-Gift toy store opens its doors to parents from 650 families so they can pick out donated toys, books and bikes for their children. Each season, the RE/MAX of Boulder lobby has served as a Share-A-Gift collection center, overflowing with toys donated by generous RE/MAX of Boulder Realtors, staff, clients and friends. REAL ESTATE
Then and now: A look at Boulder market trends over the last decade BOULDER – While some aspects of Boulder have remained the same for decades (the stunning Flatirons certainly aren’t going JENNIFER anywhere!), EGBERT the local real RE/MAX Alliance estate market has experienced some noticeable shifts. Ten years ago, real estate in Boulder was characterized by greater inventory and less competition. Activity around town ebbed and flowed with the beginning and end of school semesters. Now, Boulder is a hot spot for tourists year-round, and its housing market reflects the increased popularity. Here’s a look at Boulder’s real estate market trends over the last decade. Inventory and pricing While the real estate market throughout the state is flourishing, there is a shortage of homes on the market in Boulder. The homes that are for sale are often sold at prices that are thousands of dollars above the seller’s asking price, and often even above the appraised value. The good news is that prices are staying high. According to data from the Federal Housing

Home size and neighborhoods The desire for homes larger than 6,000 square feet isn’t as prevalent as it was in the early part of the decade. Many families and individuals moving to the area are seeking homes around 3,600 square feet above ground and 1,200 square feet in the basement. Most homes in the core area of town are selling for between $750 and $1200/square foot. This has made the outskirts of Boulder (Gunbarrel, the plains between Boulder and Longmont, and up in the hills toward Flagstaff, Sunshine, Pinebrook and Carriage Hills much more sought-after areas. You can expect to see equity gains in those areas strengthen as well. Population growth Colorado has seen record population growth over the last decade and was even the second-fastest growing state in the country last year. Not only are more people moving here, but Boulder’s median and per capita

income are consistently higher than those of the state and the nation, as well. The median household income for the Boulder metro area was $72,009 in 2015, which was $8,100 higher than the median Colorado household income and $16,234 greater than the U.S. median household income. Boulder’s per capita income was $41,012 in 2015, which was $7,449 higher than the median Colorado per capita income. Add to the mix that Boulder is also consistently ranked as one of the most educated cities in the U.S., and you’ve got a recipe for a highly knowledgeable population. Location Over the last decade, surrounding cities just outside Boulder’s city limits, such as Louisville, Lafayette, Longmont,
and Erie have gained popularity for their own unique communities and downtown areas, often with a smaller price tag. However, Boulder is not – and likely will not for the near future – losing its appeal to potential buyers. The Boulder real estate market is unlike any other in the U.S, and the positive growth shows no signs of stopping. It’s never been a better time to sell with confidence. Exterior inspections
BOULDER – A thorough inspection of a home’s exterior is critical as conditions on the outside may also affect the integrity of the interior. Inspectors will make a visible inspection of the grounds around the house to see if rain water is draining away from the structure or towards it. Rain water that drains towards the house could damage the structure, weaken the foundation and allow water to get into the basement or crawl space. Plants or trees growing too close to the house can damage the siding or roof covering; trees planted too close to the foundation may damage the foundation; untreated wood and ground contact can cause rot; 12

Gutter downspouts should have extensions to carry water away from the house. The amount of rain water coming off the roof could be in the thousands of gallons and if the water is discharged alongside the

Roof leakage caused by old or damaged shingles/tiles or improper flashing is a common problem. It may be easy and inexpensive to repair damaged tile and shingles and to re-caulk the roof penetrations if found in the early stages. Shoveling some snow-removal tips your way By Alan J. Heavens The Philadelphia Inquirer (TNS) I’m a real stickler about snow removal, the result of growing up in Connecticut and plowing my way to lots of cash as soon as I could hold a shovel. While people all around me use snow throwers, I shovel – even though I have had one of those infernal machines since 1997. Last January’s blizzard was no exception. OK, it took me 11
hours over two days, but it was exercise, and my gym routine has helped make such marathon sessions pain-free. I’m not everybody (and the rest of the world is grateful for that), so I want to share proper shoveling techniques for those who want to know. First, if you’re out of shape, don’t exercise regularly, or have trouble breathing or heart problems, don’t shovel snow. Dress in layers.

Stretch before you shovel, to get those muscles working and have a better chance of not seriously hurting yourself. Bend at the knees, not at the waist (it’s just like playing tennis), and lift with your legs to protect your spine from injury. If the snow is light and fluffy, you can simply push it out of the way – but use the same technique. Push the snow from the edge of the handle, shifting body weight from back leg to front leg instead of bending at the waist. If the snow is heavy and wet, bend the knees, lift with the legs, but move smaller amounts. I know I sound like my (pick one) Pilates, yoga, TRX, tennis, and swimming coaches, but protect your back by using your legs and abdominal muscles to lift the snow. Rest regularly. If you try to shovel lots of snow at light speed, you increase risk of injury. The shovel? It’s somewhere in the back of the garage, so you better start looking for it now. I buy a new one every three years, depending on how bad the

previous winter was and if there was a lot of ice to deal with. I prefer 18-inch-wide shovels with small blades and offset handles to cut down on back strain. I have a brush with a telescoping handle for the car and the greenhouse, a coarse-surface broom, and an ice chopper. Cross your fingers for another mild winter. Contact Alan J. REAL ESTATE NEWS
RE/MAX Alliance announces partnership with New Story DENVER – RE/MAX Alliance announced at it’s annual Thanksgiving Event held November 16, a new partnership with New Story, a non-profit company which helps to transform lives and communities across the world. Over the past two years, New Story has been building communities in Haiti, El Salvador, and Bolivia. They work with local partners to transform poverty stricken areas into safe, life-changing communities that provide families with shelter, access to clean water, sanitation, and power. Each home costs just $6,000 and is given to a family in need to impact their lives and many generations to follow. RE/MAX Alliance has been involved in helping children in the local community with their support of Children’s Miracle Network. As a result of two successful golf tournaments in 2016, a check for over $115,000 was presented to Children’s Hospital on December 1. “We’ve always been proud of making a difference in the lives of children and families in our local community, we will always continue in our efforts to support the Children’s Miracle Network and Children’s Hospital of Denver,”said Chad Ochsner,
broker/owner for RE/MAX Alliance. “Now with our partnership, we have the opportunity to help children and communities that need support in another part of the world as well. Everything starts with a home, and by training local labor and buying locally sourced construction materials, these homes will help stimulate local economies and teach skills in the process.” For many of these people and families, they don’t have proper shelter, clean water or sanitation systems and are experiencing life-threatening homelessness. It’s nearly impossible for kids to go to school, or adults to get jobs when they don’t even have a safe place to sleep at night. With the efforts of New Story, building these homes will provide safety and consistency, which unlocks the potential needed to thrive. RE/MAX Alliance hopes you will join in with its efforts and make a difference in the lives of children by visiting homesincolorado.com/newstory. HOME DECOR
These are the buzziest paint color trends of 2017, according to Farrow & Ball By Jonathan Steinitz, Domaine (TNS)
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of a freshly painted room. Aside from its mood-boosting properties, paint has the power to transform any space with the flick of a brush. It can elevate your home, welcome in the new season, and even lower its value. But in a sea of swatches, how do you know what hue to choose? Paint can be a game changer in the best and worst way. In the same way the right tone can give a tired room a new lease on life, the wrong one can quickly date it. So we tapped Farrow & Ball’s head of creative, Charlie Cosby, to finally answer the perennial question: What color should I paint my room? Now that we know what paint colors are out, it’s time to discover which hues the new year will reign in. While 2016 was all about black, gray and blush, 2017 is dialing it up. Expect bold, intense hues and vivid brights, which also happen to be some of Cosby’s personal favorites. “I love Studio Green for 2017,” she told MyDomaine. “I love its depth and high intensity of color. Studio Green feels like a sleek black with a huge green undertone that adds a botanical feel. I’m also a huge fan of yellow and the optimism it brings to any space, particularly in such uncertain times.” Ahead, Cosby shares her top bold paint color trend predictions for the year, with some simple tips on how to use them. Embrace vivid brights The runways have spoken. Subdued colors are being replaced with vivid brights in our wardrobes, but it doesn’t end there. Expect to see these bold hues available as interior paint colors in 2017 too. “Brighter colors are becoming increasingly popular for the home, and we certainly saw bolder hues on the catwalks this autumn,” said Cosby. “Bright colors were also used in combination with sorbet shades at Tibi, Lacoste and Michael Kors, and this is certainly a trend that translates into interiors. Strong hues like St. Giles Blue adds an electrifying accent to a soft sorbet palette of gentle blue such as Pale Powder and lilac Calluna. Similarly, rich aubergine Brinjal can be used in combination with the pretty Middleton Pink. 16

But the bold statement doesn’t end at color. Cosby says stripes are coming through in a big way. “Stripes are a design classic in both fashion and interiors, and we saw bright stripes coming through at the Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Opening Ceremony shows,” she said. “Whether you choose a multicolored stripe like our bold Chromatic Stripe, or simply hang a classic Closet Stripe horizontally, using stripes unexpectedly keep a room fresh and interesting for 2017.” Use with caution Before you get excited about using these brighter hues, take note of the do’s and don’ts. “One of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing a bold paint for their home is choosing a color they will quickly tire of,” said Cosby. “If you decide to choose a bold color, then think about the colors you’re drawn to in fashion and the colors you already have in your soft furnishing, fabrics and accessories,” she explained. “You’re more likely to choose a color you love and, more importantly, one that goes with the home accessories and furniture you already have (although it could be a great excuse for a shopping trip).” Start small If you’re particularly cautious about dabbling in bright colors, Cosby advises starting with the smallest room in the house first. “Choose a vivid hue for a small bathroom, cloakroom, or even the inside of a cupboard is a fantastic way to add unexpected color,” she said. “Similarly, using bright colors as an accent to a neutral scheme is a good way to introduce color. Painting furniture in bold hues like Yellowcake, St. Giles Blue or Incarnadine is a fantastic way to experiment with bright colors.” Paint with confidence When you do finally settle on “the one,” use it with confidence. This is Cosby’s number one rule when working with bright hues. “Any doubt will stick out like a sore thumb,” she said. “Either fully commit and paint a full room in a rich hue like Railings, Down Pipe or Stiffkey Blue, or deliberately paint a piece of furniture as an accent to an otherwise neutral
space. Anything in between will lack confidence and be far less impactful.” The 5 bold paint color trends for 2017 are...studio green “There is something almost defiant about the use of botanic Studio Green on walls instead of the ubiquitous charcoal darks. It is unapologetically clubby and has a fantastically timeless old-world quality but can be used in the most modern of rooms.” Radicchio “Pink has been at the forefront of decorating for the last year, and there is now a natural progression to stronger reds, with their spirit

of bold optimism. Radicchio feels exuberant, romantic, and sensual rather than clean or graphic, due to its complex underlying blue tone.” Hay “Understated Hay feels soft and familiar. Its quiet quality creates rooms that have a hushed atmosphere as well as an unmatched depth and gentleness. It is not a hot or sunny yellow (although it becomes rawer in bright light) but rather an aged, whimsical tone with an underlying green.” Drawing room blue “Drawing Room Blue is a strong, clean blue and reflects the December 16-17, 2016
nautical references we have seen on the catwalk, but with a more graphic feel. Our increasing desire to be surrounded by the humbling, calm of the sea brings serenity to the home. Pelt “There is a big feeling for ‘rock’ at the moment, with leather prevalent in homes and fashion. Luxurious Pelt is the perfect choice to add some color to a rock ‘n’ roll scheme. The all-white look is here to stay If, unlike us, you’re not celebrating the emergence of bright, vivid and bold hues next year, then don’t fear. Cosby tells us the all-white look isn’t going anywhere. In fact, she believes it’s making a comeback. Although, for many of us, the timeless look didn’t go anywhere. “Recently whites have had an undertone of gray, but 2017 sees a return to a pure white that’s clean and graphic, she explained. “Our All White has no pigment and creates an uncomplicated feel that’s naturally fresh, but not stark or ‘brilliant.’ The key to this look is to create a mood of stillness and calm by layering different whites,
and only whites, together. Check out Erin Featherston’s home to see this lovely white layered style in action. Cosby loves to pair varying white paint colors together for visual interest. She loves Cabbage White and Strong White for this. “With their different nuances of color, they can be used in any combination with All White to create subtle decorative surprises, she adds. “They also create the perfect backdrop for both art and natural materials. These seemingly simple colors evoke a complex response when combined in this way. In fact, Farrow & Ball’s most popular paint colors are white. “We are famed for our neutrals, said Cosby. “All White, Wimborne White and Pointing are all our most popular colors. Neutrals are always popular as they can be used to provide a clean and inconspicuous backdrop to furniture, fabrics, artworks and accessories. We’ll never give them up.
