t’s time to party in Midway Park. Broomfield Days is back. The annual three-day celebration gets rolling with Friday events — the annual golf tournament in memor y of Walt Spader, and of course, bingo at the Girl Scout Shelter, before things kick into full gear on Saturday. Midway Park is the place to be for Broomfield’s annual “Day of Play,” a designation given to Broomfield Days that is tied to Playful City status. Broomfield for five years has

been named a Playful City by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit “dedicated to saving play for America’s children ...” The designation recognizes cities that make it easy for kids to play and See CELEBRATION on 4

be active. Broomfield was recognized for its numerous parks with play structures, play areas that are near neighborhoods and open spaces with sidewalks and trails. There will be fun and games for kids and adults — and dogs — alike. The parade is not to be missed, with hosts of kids and floats and bands and cars making the procession down Midway Boulevard. It also features Paul Derda, a.k.a., “Mr. Broomfield” and the rec center name sake, as the master of ceremonies. Derda has held the parade gig for three-plus decades — he’s not sure exactly how many years, but his best guess in at least 36. He said he’ll keep on doing it until they ask him not to, or until he can’t remember the names to go with the hundreds of

faces he sees in the crowd. And don’t forget the food. You can get your first plateful at the Lions Club pancake breakfast and eat your way through the day by munching on tasty treats ser ved up by scads of restaurants and nonprofits. If its suds your after, four of Broomfield’s own breweries — 4 Noses Brewing Company, Big Choice Brewing, Nighthawk Brewer y and Wonderland Brewing Company — will be ser ving up beer. And all sorts of vendors will be on hand to sell Broomfield-centric, and beyond, merchandise. There will be stages full of entertainment for kids and families, all sorts of demonstrations, those best-dressed dogs and music to get you moving. There will be the Mayor’s

Broomfield resident Chris Lancaster won this year’s poster contest.

Broomfield Days 2016 officially has a new poster — one that embodies this year’s theme of “work, play, community, together” at a glance. “Together,” created by Broomfield resident Chris Lancaster, will be printed and placed for sale, likely by Sept. 1, so that people can purchase them before the event. Posters will sell for $25 each and benefit the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities. Sherill Bunetta, BCAH co-president and treasurer, said the money raised goes into funding next year’s contest and the cost of printing. Two people entered this year’s poster contest, Bunetta said, which is rare. Keri Dillingham, who painted “Hear the Music of Broomfield’s Community,” took home the second place prize of $50. Lancaster, who says he’s not an artist and only participated to ensure there were

enough entries, won $100. Broomfield Police Chief Gary Creager and North Metro Fire Rescue District Chief Dave Ramos judged both entries Monday. An unveiling of the winner was held last week at the Brunner Farmhouse, Earlier this year, Laurie A. Petrone was named the winner of the logo and theme contest, a theme that was meant to be reflected in the posters. Broomfield Days begins Sept. 16 with a golf tournament sponsored by Senior Resources of Broomfield and bingo games sponsored by the Broomfield Lions Club. The next day is the main event with activities, including a 5K race, clown contest, parade, trade fair, craft festival, food booths, and three stages of entertainment. The event, held at Midway Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., is an opportunity for local organizations and business to showcase services and get

2016 logo showcases close-knit community

By Barbara Ploeger For the Enterprise

Earlier this year — well in advance of actual Broomfield Days activities — the city and county held a contest for this year’s logo design. There were a total of 23 submissions, and 521 people participated online in the voting process. The winning design was submitted by Laurie Petrone, who of course, lives in Broomfield. Laurie is a freelance graphic designer. Her company, Meraki Marketing, is based in Broomfield (www.merakimarketing.org). When rec a recreation center employee called Laurie to announce that she created the winning logo, she expressed her excitement by saying, “You made my, day, my week, my month, my year! I’m so excited my design won!”

The theme encapsulates all that we do here in Broomfield: work/play/ community/ together,” she said. “We’re in it together as a community, working hard to build relationships and nurture our sense of family. I feel really blessed that our children are growing up in this community and are surrounded by all the important values of our great city. “The three images of people in the design also represent the strong sense of family and community we have here in Broomfield,” she added. “I feel a strong sense, all around me, that the folks here in the community want nothing but the best for the next generation rising up through the ranks.” She noted that the moun-

tains circled around the top speak for themselves. “The views here in Broomfield are remarkable and I’m still humbled by what I see when I look out at those peaks every single day,” Laurie said. You will see this new 2016 Broomfield Days logo on everything “Broomfield Days,” and the colors and slogan will be this year’s theme for the community celebration. The city and county extended gratitude to Laurie for creating something centered on her love for this great community. All others in the community who likewise submitted ideas reflecting what they felt Broomfield represents to them also were thanked, as well as everyone who took time to participate in voting online for this year’s winning logo.

Clown contest still a favorite of kids and adults alike

By Enterprise staff

Broomfield kids pull out all the stops to create their costumes for the annual Optimist Club Clown Contest. And with good reason — the stakes are high. The prize in each age group is a new bike. No small trophy for the 12-and-younger set. The contest starts at 8 a.m. on the main stage in Midway Park (east of North Metro Fire Rescue District

Station 61). Kids bedecked in fluffy wigs, floppy shoes and colorful noses need to arrive no later that 7:45 a.m. — registration begins at 7:15 a.m. After the judging, all of the contestants can pile on the Optimist Club’s parade float, so the whole town can see their clown costume creativity. No preregistration is required. For more information, call Debbie Cooper-George at 303-944-8494 or Corey Lorenz at 720-297-8364.

Community turns out for parade, awards By Enterprise staff

Whether they go for the marching bands, dancers, horses, school groups, floats or free candy, crowds of kids and kids at heart are known to fill the sidewalks of Midway Boulevard long before the annual Broomfield Days Parade begins its procession. The parade always draws a large contingent of floats, bands and more. Entries will be judged in six categories: Decorated floats, car and cycle clubs, school spirit, multicultural, marching groups and march-

ing bands. The parade gets rolling at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and will head west along Midway Boulevard from Spader Way to the reviewing stand in Midway Park. Awards are scheduled to be given at noon at the reviewing stand. The parade always draws a large contingent of floats, bands and more. Pancakes are ready for customers at the Lions Club breakfast during previous Broomfield Days.

Lions Club provides pancakes and bingo Do pancakes taste better when served better outdoors among hundreds of your closest friends? If turnout at the Lions Club’s annual pancake breakfast can serve as an unspoken answer, then yes, they do. Crowds are always in abundance for the flapjacks, eggs, sausage, juice and milk dished out by club members. Over the years, the number of hot cakes served by the Lions total up to thousands. And they hope to add to that total this

year. The Lions will be back at the griddles on Saturday at the Girl Scout Shelter at Midway Park. The feast runs from 7 to 11 a.m. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids 6 to 12. Those age 5 and younger are free. Proceeds go to Lions’ programs that benefit the community. The Lions also sponsor Club Bingo at the Girl Scout Shelter at 7 p.m Friday evening and again from 7 to 11 p.m. at the shelter on Saturday.

CANINES FROM PAGE 16 outfits and a few tricks, too. At stake is a year’s worth of veterinary care from the Animal Doctor. The contest gets going at 2:30 p.m. and features large- and small-breed divisions. Expect 40 or 50 dogs and hundreds of onlookers. Veterinarian Dave Sievers, whose practice, The Animal Doctor, always sponsors the event, created the contest that has become synonymous with Broomfield Days. “The greatest joy is watching the extreme creativity and the deepest love and respect the contestants show toward their best-dressed

friends,” Sievers said. “Children and adults proudly show off their creativity, while the dogs take it all in as another day in the park.” The contest is judged by the audience, which votes for its favorites via hoots, hollers and claps. A panel of official judges is charged with gauging which dog garners the most applause. Once a victor is chosen in each division, they square off in a best-of-show clap-off. Top prize goes to the pooch that stirs up the most crowd noise. First through fifth place in each division also take home some goodies, too.

out in the community. Bunetta said the council will examine why turnout was low this year for the contest so they can address it next year. Typically anywhere from six to a dozen people enter their artwork. Dillingham’s daughter helped with the poster, the background of which was made up of sheets of music. In the foreground, shapes of people working, playing and being together filled the poster. Lancaster’s poster, which will be

displayed in the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library along with Dillingham’s, shows two figures touching hands with a dog between them. In the background are snowcapped mountain peaks. “I wanted to show togetherness,” he said. “It’s a family, or people, together. The banner was to make it so the poster signified Broomfield Days.” Jennifer Rios: 303-473-1361, riosj@broomfieldenterprise.com or Twitter.com/Jennifer_Rios

On each day, registration and practice for Dock Dog Big Air is at 8 a.m. Saturday features four Big Air Wave competitions — 9 and 11 a.m., and again at 1 and 5 p.m. The final Big Air Wave contest is at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Saturday includes Lure Chases at 10 a.m. and at Dock Dogs Belly Flop contest at 12:50 p.m. The Extreme Vertical Contest is at 3 p.m. Then on Sunday, a Speed Retrieve contest is at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the lure chasing benefit Rotary Club of Broomfield Crossing’s service projects and scholarships.

The history of The Animal Doctor’s, “BEST DRESSED DOG CONTEST” goes back over one hundred and fifty years to when early settlers gathered on the third Saturday of every September for the harvest celebration, (Well it might have happened!). In those days, family dogs accompanied their masters at all times and thus were in great abundance at the harvest festival. As their numbers grew, the pungent odor of these sweaty, best friends, caused many a master to require dog bathing before admittance into the festival. Well, after the arrival of the first sparkling clean and somewhat now more sophisticated looking canine, one thing led to another. And, before anybody knew it, the dogs were trying to out dress each other at the annual harvest event, (Its possible!). The Animal Doctor began supporting the “Best Dressed Dog Contest” in 1986. The first contest also included shy but elegantly dressed felines. However, problems immediately arose when certain canine factions attempted to bribe the judges with watered down doggy treats, (thus the scandal’s name, “WHITE WATER DOGGY DOU”). In addition, there were rumors that the felines were harassed in particular by one flee bitten Boston Terrier named BILLY C.. The battered feline investigation was handled by a special prosecutor, dog-catcher who determined that Billy was definitely a BAD DOG and that The Animal Doctor should limit feline exhibition to that of pictorials. BAD BILLY responded by admitting that he was sorry about acting like a DOG and that he might have mislead a few felines but never really had prosecutable contact with any of them. BUT REALLY, The Animal Doctor has been so pleased to participate in Broomfield Days for the past 13 years. Felines are not allowed because of many dangers to the animals but feline pictures are judged for prizes! From the beginning in 1986, the people of Broomfield have received “THE ANIMAL DOCTOR” and the “BEST DRESSED DOG CONTEST” with open arms. The first contest was held on the south side of the park and we used a police patrol car speaker for the PA system. The officer had to leave in the middle of the contest so we stopped and patiently waited for his return. Since then the party has grown to several hundred spectators, wonderful animal lovers, cute kids, and the finest, most sophisticated, BEST DRESSED DOGS. Please honor us by entering your best friend, dressed in his best, in our contest. Or, just come by and visit us in our booth where we will be giving away freebies. Also at our booth, we will be injecting a few prescheduled dogs with computer identification chips. Call us at (303-466-8888) to schedule your dog. You and your canine companion are always welcome at “THE ANIMAL DOCTOR”!
