'Soldier-first'approach
at Broomfield Veterans Museum humanizes war-torn experiences
By Corbett Stevenson Broomfield EnterpriseWith the addition of its new exhibit commemorating the 80th anniversaryof
D-Day (June6,1944), Veterans Museum Broomfield continuesits strong legacyofhonoring veterans and educating the community through retired soldiers’stories.
It’s one of Broomfield’s greatest hidden gems. It’s aplace where veterans and non-veterans convene to build community while learning about the past through a“soldierfirst”approach, centering the humanity of veterans.
The historyofBroomfield is intertwined with thehistoryof veterans, as many of the Broomfield area’s early residents in the 1960s and 1970s areveterans. Sixofthose early residents saw agap in the city —it was missing agathering placefor veterans and aplace for education and historical preservation.
“Itall started with theoriginal founders, six men from Broomfield who said that they wantedtocreate amuseum that honored Broomfield
residents who had served,”Flint Whitlock said. “Overtime, our vision expanded to incorporate all Colorado veterans. ”
Whitlock is on the museum’s boardofdirectors, whereheuses his expertise as aVietnam veteran and decades of workasamilitary historian to help put together new exhibits, among other tasks.
Founders of the museum, Robert Davenport, Paul Murphy,Robert Seeber,Vic Boccard, John Atkinson and William Humphrey, all had deep roots in the community and began the museum with amission to honor veterans and educate visitors. This is amission that the museum continues today.
“Since we expanded that focus, we’vegotten people from alloverthe state as well as other states,”Whitlock said. “Sometimes people arepassing through and they say,‘Oh,that looks interesting, let’s go visit that.’”
For aexhibit in 2022, three mannequins at the Veterans Museum Broomfield display the uniforms of various World WarIIwomen’smilitary organizations, while posters and other artifacts broaden the stories of women’s contributions to the Allied victory (Veterans MuseumBroomfield /Courtesyphoto)
Whitlock explained that one of the most important aspects of the museum, and one of the things that makes it so special, is its soldier-first approach. Instead of focusing on the broad strokes of war and conflict, the museumzooms in on the individual service members.
“We’re showing things likea mannequin that has aflight jacket of aparticular area, soldier, or airman, and talks alittle bit about their historyand their story,”hesaid.
“It’snot always the generals or the admirals that we focus on —it’s the individual soldier or sailor or nurse or whoever it may be,toreally humanize the military historyexperience.”
Whitlock continued: “You can talk about awar, you can talk about a campaign, youcan talk about abattle —it’sall pretty abstract. Butwhen youget down to the individual and we talk about his or her experiences, Ithink that really helps make that display, that poster, that exhibit come alivefor the visitor.”
In addition to creating apositive experience for the visitors, this approach also has an impact on the veterans who donate artifacts, visit and volunteer at the museum.
“A challenge for all of us is that when youretire, you’ve kind of lost the …focus of your life very much in terms of your work,”Mike Fellows, aveteran and boardmember, said.
“For me, this has provided another community of people that Ienjoy being around. Even though we’ve been in different services, we havea
and hadsomeunusual patches.”
Little said thatafter investigating the patches, he learned that the man was at one point aloadmaster in the Air Force. As aloadmaster, hewould have been flying theparatroopers in for airborne landings throughout the war.Little said that the other patches indicated he was involved in nine combat campaigns, with some patches indicating that he wasone of the firstplanes to enter agiven combat zone.
“Hewas ahighly respected Airman and aleader, yet he left service as a private,”hesaid. “Somewherealong the way he must havegotten himself in trouble.”
“And that’sreally what our museum is all about,” Littlesaid. “We’re moreinterested in the individual soldier’s story. We use the donations that comeintoustotell
the stories of the individual soldiers and sailors and airmen and the airwomen who served.”
Outside of the artifacts, veterans who visit the museum bring their ownstories to tell, too
“We’ll get fellows who talk about their timeand service and they remember things that they haven’t thought of in years,”Little said.“This gives them achance to clear their conscience, or remember maybe some good things, or afriend that they had in service that they haven’t thought of in four years. Andthose areneat experiences to see —and we get to witness that.”
The museumisopen Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.to2 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m.to3 p.m., 12 Garden Center, Broomfield. Learn moreat broomfieldveterans.org.
basic setofcommon experiences and we enjoybeing around each other.”
Fellows added:“Havingseen the museum expand from asingle room to what it is nowand theimpact we see on community, local school visits, and others —we’ve really helped preserve and sharethe storyofservice of our veterans to agrowing world and community.”
The growing world and community seemtoagree that the museum has had aprofoundly positiveimpact, with visitors stopping by from all across the Front Range —and the nation —and Fellows said that Tripadvisorhas rated the museum as the No.1thing to visit in the city and county.
The museum is full of artifacts and knowledge, and with thesoldierfirst approach, everyartifact has a story, even if some of them arestill mysterious.
David Little has been working at the museum for three years, but has beena visitor for decades. He works as the education specialist, helping the museum with outreach to teach the public aboutveterans. As amilitaryhistorian, he has countless storiesbehindeach artifact he works with.
“Wehavethe uniforms of an airman who was involved in World WarIIand the fighting in Europe,” Little said.“What madethis unusual is that we received two uniforms from this gentleman.Whenhewas discharged, hewas aprivate— bottom of the line. Butthe second uniform had asergeant rating on it
