Ralph M. Smith
Ralph M. Smith, 86, of Canon City, passed away March 11, 2018 at his home where his family rallied to send him out in style. He was born in Florence, Colorado on November 12, 1931 to Ralph H. and Sylvesta (Stricklin) Smith. The Smith family moved to Florence from South Dakota and the Stricklin family originally came from West Virginia with stops in Illinois and Missouri. Both families worked in the Oil business. Growing up in the depression with five brothers and sisters was tough. Ralph and his brothers did pretty much anything to help the family make ends meet. Ralph’s first job was delivering milk from the truck to the door beginning at age 6. He washed cars at the Ford Garage and was the Gimbals Store Bicycle Repairman. Ralph and his brother Jason also hauled trash with the family donkey, Blackjack, and their spring wagon. He started living and working on the Koefed Dairy farm at age 15 and was there his Junior and Senior years of high school and the summer following his graduation from Florence High School in 1950. Ralph entered the Navy from Denver on 3 Jan 1951 and following initial training was assigned to the destroyer U.S.S. O’Brien in Japan under the command of Chester W. Nimitz Junior. Ralph joked that the ship saw lots of action off Korea due to their commander being groomed for higher rank. The ship routinely conducted close in shore bombardment and during one 30-day period fired an average of one 5” shell every five minutes. One four hour running dual between a squadron of four destroyers led by the O’Brien and shore batteries in Wonsan Harbor became known as the Battle of the Buzz Saw. Although Ralph had a promising Navy career he decided to return home and was discharged from the Navy as a Petty Officer 2nd Class on 3 Nov 1954. Upon return to Canon City, Ralph began looking for work and he also looked up Geraldine (Jerry Lou) Schwab. He had learned much about Jerry Lou through letters a fellow sailor and friend received from her and he shared with him. It did not take long for
In Loving Memory
him to propose to Jerry Lou and they were married in the First Methodist Church in Canon City on 16 Dec 1956. Ralph worked several jobs until he found his calling as a Carpenter’s Apprentice and started the program at Pueblo Junior College. He and his brother Bernard then started Smith Brother’s Cabinetry Company in Canon City in 1956 and were very successful. The Smith Brothers introduced laminate counter tops to the area and also built the original Buckskin Joe’s stage coach and the body for the steam engine. They donated their time and energy to various church organizations and the 4H. However, the economic downturn in 1968 and lack of payments for their work caused them to close. Ralph then began his 12-year career with the Colorado Department of Corrections. Through hard work and dedication, he rose to the position of Superintendent of Construction and supervised projects throughout the state. In 1981 Ralph decided he needed a change due to the heavy travel schedule and lack of family time and moved the family to Washington State. He again worked with his brother Bernard at Baugh Construction in Seattle WA. He retired in 1995 after 12 years at Baugh Construction and he and Jerry settled in Eastern WA. to be near their daughters. They returned to Canon City in 2013. Despite all the time in Washington, they both felt Canon City was home. Ralph and Jerry Lou were blessed with two daughters, Lorri Lynne Fisher, and Lynda Lou Poppie. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. He is survived by his daughters Lorri Fisher and Lyn Poppie, Grandchildren Dustin Hill, Savannah Hill, Britaania Poppie, and Dirk Poppie, his brother Jason (Patricia Meirhaeghe) and sister Josephine (Jerry) Nash, and numerous nieces and nephews. Most notably Charlie, Steve, and Dave Smith, and the Kevin Schwab and Sherry (Schwab) Allnut families, all who spent considerable time with Ralph during his last weeks. He was preceded in death by Jerry on May 28, 2017, his wife of 61 years, his parents, sister Ivona Smith and brothers Bernard and Kenney Smith. A grave side service will be conducted Memorial Day Weekend at the Rosita Cemetery for both Ralph and Jerry. Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at Harwoodfunerals.com.

USFS reminds public to be careful with fire This winter has been drier across the Pike and San Isabel national forests and Cimarron and Comanche national grasslands, and conditions are comparable to the area’s busiest fire seasons. If the area does not receive moisture, fire danger will climb to the “High to Very High” range within a week or two. Careless human acts have caused nearly half of the wildfires on the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron and Comanche NG in the last 10 years. When visiting the forest be careful
with any kind of fire use. It is important to “Know Before You Go” and find out what the current conditions and restrictions may be where you are planning to visit. Put your campfire out (make sure it is cold to the touch) before you leave, check the area after target shooting, don’t park on dry grass, and obey all fire restrictions that may be in place. Gabriella Gonzales named 2018 Blossom Queen

Gabriella Gonzales and her court will reign over Cañon City’s 80th annual Music & Blossom Festival, which will be May 3-6. Gonzales, a senior at Cañon City High School, was crowned queen Saturday during the 73rd annual pageant at CCHS. Twenty-two delegates vied for the coveted crown. She said hearing her name called when the emcee announced the queen was indescribable. “It feels like a roller coaster when you hit that final drop and everything just freezes for a second,” she said. “I can’t explain, you just want to drop to your knees and cry.” She didn’t drop to her knees, but she did cry when she was crowned, and she thanked the panel of judges. This was Gonzales’ third time taking part in the queen’s pageant, having been named third runner-up in 2017. She said being part of the pageant was something she had wanted to do since she was a little girl. This year, she especially enjoyed the sense of community with the other contestants. “It was really just such a strong bond with all the girls here,” she said. During Blossom Weekend, Gonzales looks forward to serving the community and being a role model to other young women. Gonzales’ court includes Lydia Bright, 1st Attendant; Emma Enslow, 2nd Attendant; Solana Short, Miss Personality; and Little Miss, Niley Jo Sartori and Little Mister, Clyde DeLaRosa. Longtime Cañon City resident and former mayor Don Packard was named this year’s parade grand marshal, but he was unable to attend the pageant. This year’s pageant also was the third for Bright, who is a senior at CCHS. “Honestly, I couldn’t hope for anything better,” she said about being
named 1st Attendant. “This is the first could have won the crown, and I would “I love how they grow in confidence time I came with the goal to win — the have been happy with any one of them and introspectively, they have to decide past two years I just wanted to learn, winning.” for themselves who they are and find and I felt like I learned everything I She told the candidates Friday night their place in this world and what their needed to make it this far and it really that while her chapter may end with passion is,” he said. “From what I’ve paid off.” some of them now that the pageant is noticed, that’s what the girls who are She said the last two years she worked over, they each played an integral role involved in this really grow from.” to master public speaking and her in her own personal story. She looks forward to seeing the community come together on Blossom Weekend when the court will make several appearances across the community at a variety of events. Pageant director Megan McCarter selected the theme, “Once Upon A Time...” this year to encourage candidates to remember that they are all queens of their own lives and that they all have the power to choose how their story plays out and to never lose Carie Canterbury sight of pursuing their dreams. ELECT SKIP MOREAU FOR
YOUR
SHERIFF
November 6, 2018 Election OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP
I FOUGHT FOR OUR COUNTRY IN VIETNAM AND I WILL FIGHT FOR YOU Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity is, “doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” Why do we continue to elect people that want the fancy title and not the responsibilities? We elect the Sheriff, Prosecuting Attorney and other elected officials to work for the people. Are they performing as you, the citizens of Fremont County, want them to perform? My personal option; I do not think so. Are we are electing people who are doing the same thing over and over and entrenched in the political system? This November the people of Fremont County will have a chance to see change. Elect a leader that will work for you. As your Sheriff of Fremont County, I will run your office in the most professional, proactive and proficient manner. I have the experience, training and background in management and law-enforcement to make this happen. I will never forget that the people are the reason I am Sheriff, hired to protect and serve, and you are my Boss. I will run the agency the way the citizens of Fremont County want to see their Sheriff’s office ran. I will sit down with our District Attorney and demand that we seek the maximum sentence for any and all criminal activity and stop slapping their hands. As far as I am concerned, that puts illegal drugs and dealers on the top of my list. It is the people of our county that are taking a beating, and that must stop. This criminal behavior will not be tolerated in our county. As your Sheriff this will be a reality; nothing less. Being your chief law enforcement officer in the county doesn't give me more authority, just more responsibility. I know there is a lot that I can and will do to make a difference. I will make Fremont County a safer and more united community and reaffirm the residents’ faith and trust in their Sheriff’s Department. I ask that you, the Fremont County voters, put your trust in me to be your next Sheriff. Your vote and support will make the change.
