A party you don’t want to miss ... W elcome to the 2016 Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival in Cañon City. The eighth annual event promises to be the biggest and best yet with more Boats, Bands, and Beer. The RGWF will take place at Centennial Park, or for you locals, “Duck Park.” We have increased the number of events to more than 20 this year and continue to add vendors. In 2001, an idea was hatched to create a Build Your Own Boat Race and community event in the summer to celebrate the Arkansas River. Through the years the race expanded, 2009 the RGWF was formed to help establish a Whitewater Park in Cañon City. This festival was developed through the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District, the Cañon City Whitewater Kayak and Recreation Park Committee and the Fremont Community Foundation as a fundraiser for the continued expansion of the Whitewater Park, and contributions to Recreation District programs and FCF’s charitable causes. Fremont Adventure Recreation, or FAR, is the fourth partner and they bring their event expertise to the RGWF and very entertaining competitions. All of the money raised at the RGWF goes back to the community. The festival area includes the north banks of the river between the pedestrian bridge and Fourth Street, the Pedestrian Bridge over the Arkansas River and the south bank of the river. While watching the events enjoy a beer, or any non-alcoholic beverage you prefer, and great food from our vendor’s right along the Whitewater Park. We will offer a Kids Fun Zone once again thanks to River Val-

ley Bounce Houses. There are two entertainment stages, the River Stage between the river and Duck Pond and the Main Stage on the southeast corner of Centennial Park. In all, seven different musical acts will perform during this two-day event. With many events to choose from, there is an opportunity for just about everyone to participate and have a good time. The events are designed so both beginners and those with experience may participate. In some situations, we will provide all of the equipment you will need. It is fun to watch the events, but participating in the events will create a lifetime of memories. In this guide, you will find information on all events, and you may visit www.royalgorgewhitewaterfestival.com. We have many different vendors at the festival ranging from whitewater and outdoor gear to jewelry. If you are hungry, we have a great selection of food vendors to choose from, and yes, we have vegetarian items, as well. There is something for everyone at the RGWF. We will have an auction the evening of the 25th this year and a mountain bike from Rocky Mountain Coors distributing, items from Royal Gorge Anglers, a tarp from Dragon Fly Tarps and many other items to be announced on our website. Please join us for the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival in beautiful Cañon City on June 24-25. It will be a party you won’t want to miss. — Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival Committee

Adam Ashley

Time: 2:45 – 7:15 p.m., River Stage Description: Adam Ashley was born in the small town of Rifle in July of 1984. His interest in music was started at a very young age when his father made him take piano lessons. From there, Adam went on to play both the bass and acoustic guitars. As the years passed, Adam continued to play and sing. He went from career to career, but Adam never looked at singing and playing music as anything more than a hobby, until one day at a CCMA talent show in 2006. Adam met a woman named Misty Dawn. After winning male vocalist of the year, Misty pushed for him to consider singing as a career. Adam started singing in the town of Buckskin Joe, Colorado. He performed daily for tourists, and spent more time writing songs. It was at this time Adam went on to form a band and start to tour. Adam then went on to pursue a solo career. Tunnel Drive

riverwalk

36 • MAY 25, 2016•COLORADO OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Riverwalk The Riverwalk Trail runs through some of the most scenic and historic parts of Cañon City. Along the 7-mile stretch of the trail, you’ll track the river’s course through the city, passing historic properties, open farmland, and cottonwood groves. The trail is a mostly flat, wide, maintained trail that is open during all seasons. A system of fitness stations has recently been added to the trail and the stations are located near the Sell’s Lake trailhead. Start: You can begin your walk along the Riverwalk Trail at a number of points. Popular parking areas are Centennial Park, Sell’s Lake (off 9th St.), MacKenzie Avenue Trailhead, and Tunnel Drive. Distance: Total distance = 7.5 miles Elevation Gain: 200 ft. total Fitness Effort: Mild Difficulty: Easy Terrain: The trail is mostly flat and graded natural surface with crusher fines and occasional paved sections. Seasons: January-December Other trail users: This trail is used by hikers, bikers, walkers, bird watchers, strollers, and runners. Horses are not allowed on most of the trail. Dog friendly: Yes! Please remember to keep your dog on a leash, bring waste bags, and clean up after your pet. There is a dog park located just past Raynolds bridge. Note: At high water (late May-June), the trail may be closed at 9th street. Getting there: There are a number of access points along the Riverwalk Trail. To begin at the furthest point west on the trail, take Hwy. 50 west toward Salida. Just after the sweeping right-hand turn as you leave town, take a left turn (west) onto Tunnel Drive. Go about one mile to the Tunnel Drive Trailhead. You can travel west or east on the trail from this point. To begin at the Sell’s Lake Trailhead, from Hwy 50 in Cañon City, take 9th St. south. After you cross the river, take a left (east) onto Sell Avenue and park at the trailhead. You can choose the bluff or river trail from this point. Both will intersect at Raynolds Avenue, where you can continue east or loop back to the Sell’s Lake Trailhead.

COLORADO OUTDOOR ADVENTURES •MAY 25, 2016 • 37

TuNNEl DrivE The Tunnel Drive section of the Arkansas Riverwalk offers some of the most stunning scenic views along the 7-mile stretch. Cars were once allowed to drive along the path. Pass through historic tunnels (built for the city’s water delivery system in the late 1800’s), and overlook the historic Denver & Rio Grande Railroad as the Royal Gorge Route Train passes along this stretch of the river. You may also catch a glimpse of river runners as they make their way from the Royal Gorge and into town. Notice side canyons to your left and right, and keep your eyes open for bighorn sheep!

Start: Begin your walk at the trailhead, located off of Tunnel Drive in Cañon City. Distance: 1.92 miles to the end. Note that there is no trail access at the terminus of the trail, so all trips must be out-and-back.

Elevation Gain: 120 ft. Fitness Effort: Mild Difficulty: Easy Terrain: Dirt road Seasons: All Other trail users: This is a great trail for strollers, but use caution when biking with young riders. There is a steep drop-off on one side of the trail.

Dog friendly: Yes! Please remember to keep your dog on a leash, bring waste bags, and clean up after your pet. Notes: This trail is accessible for most of the year, but can be hot in the summer months. Be sure to bring water. Due to the possibility of rock falls, avoid this area after a freeze-thaw cycle of weather (when it has been very cold and then quite warm), or after heavy rains.

Getting There: To access the Tunnel Drive Trailhead, drive west on Hwy. 50. Once you pass the Territorial Prison (on your right), you’ll see Tunnel Drive on your left past the curve in the road. Take Tunnel Drive to the terminus and park in the parking area near the signs. Handicapped parking IS available past the trailhead signs (up the hill), but be sure you have an appropriate vehicle to access them, as the trail is steep and can have some loose gravel.
