CU AND BOULDER’S BEST

2400 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.449.5733, boulder.dougsdaydiner.com Doug’s Day Diner won these two categories last year, so clearly our readers are smitten with the friendly service and amazing comfort food at this beloved diner. Doug’s has no interest in making you sit up straight in your Sunday best. Their philosophy: “It’s not home, it’s not work, it’s your ‘third place’ where you’re taken care of.” For breakfast and lunch, there’s not a better, more relaxed place in town to dig into amazing grub. Case in point: The Hillbilly - three eggs, browns, griddle biscuit topped with country gravy, choice of three strips of thick bacon, slab ham, two house sausage patties or two turkey green chile sausage patties. If you don’t quite want to climb Food Mountain, then try the Drizzle Omelette with fresh spinach, diced tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles, toasted almonds, Parmesan and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Roadhouse Boulder Depot

2366 Junction Place, Boulder, 303.443.2167, roadhouseboulderdepot.com. Owners Terry, Dan, Mike and John Shipp knew the value of local history when they opened the Roadhouse Boulder Depot in the winter of 2015. They opened the Roadhouse Boulder Depot in the former train station depot, and the historical roots of the building were incorporated into every foot of the restaurant’s décor. The owners’ dedication went beyond mere appearances, however, as is clear in the eatery’s quality burgers. With selections that run the gamut from the traditional locally raised and hormone-free beef patties to turkey burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches and veggies burgers, the restaurant offers a menu that combines gourmet ingredients with down-home culinary comforts. Tasty add-ons like crispy duck cheese curds and roasted red peppers only add to the flavor. The burger menu alone is worth a trip to the historic depot, and it represents the founders’ philosophy of combining a quality “roadhouse” menu with an emphasis on customer service, community and freshness.

1622 Broadway, Boulder, 303.444.9663, dpdough.com It’s late. You’re starving. You could go medieval on a calzone right now. And you do because D.P. Dough is still open and its signature dish is piping hot, gooey, cheesy, delicious and huge. Nothing else comes close to taking care of you like a D.P Dough calzone. Still going? Okay, then wash it down with some Pesto Stix or Cheesy Bacon Tots, obviously. “We put out a great product,” says Owner Robert Morgan. “Our calzones are made fresh with great ingredients. It’s feel-good food. When you’re eating it, you just feel happy!” D.P. Dough is indeed open crazy late: From 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. One last thing: D.P. Dough bakes cookies to order. You’ll have to wait a minute, but the result is melt-in-your-mouth awesome. Runner Up for Best Calzone: Abo’s Pizza, 637 S. Best Coffeehouse

China Gourmet

3790 N. Broadway, #102, Boulder; 303.440.3500, chinagourmetmenu.com For more than 25 years, China Gourmet has tried to please everyone who walked in the door. And this isn’t the first time our readers have affirmed that mission with top placement in this category. China Gourmet has the heaping entrees you want when you’re craving Chinese – whether it’s pork, beef, poultry, seafood or vegetables. For something on the lighter side, try a steamed entree made with no sugar, salt, cornstarch or vegetable oil. Starters like spicy garlic edamame, pork dumplings or scallion pancakes whet your appetite for gourmet Chinese and the feast is on! Singapore Rice Noodles might be just the ticket, with shrimp, chicken and barbecue pork stir-fried with red peppers, onions and bean sprouts in thin rice noodles and curry sauce. Or try a familiar favorite like the oh so tender Kung Pao Chicken – diced chicken stir-fried with celery, water chestnuts, zucchini and green and red peppers in a spicy chili sauce topped with peanuts. You can’t go wrong!

Ozo Coffee Company

Whether it’s in their single cups or their bulk blends, Ozo makes good on the philosophy it touts on its website: “We embrace our coffee with about as much focus, dedication and prowess as humanly possible. Our highly-skilled baristas and roasters are leaders within the craft and continually stay on the forefront of specialty coffee in America.” It’s a dedication that comes through in the product, as well as the in-depth knowledge and consummate friendliness of every barista. World Famous Dark Horse Bar and Grill

2922 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.442.8162, darkhorsebar.com Polish isn’t always a requirement when it comes to a good night of drinking. Since 1975, the folks at the World Famous Dark Horse Bar and Grill have understood that there’s a certain charm that comes with the best kind of dive bar, and they’ve perfected that appeal. From the dim lighting to the menu that still holds a special honor for bar staples – burgers, steaks, fish and chips, fried appetizers and more – Dark Horse hasn’t let the modern era mess with its mojo. With a décor that revels in old movie props and turn-of-the-century antiques, the Dark Horse offers drinkers an authenticity that’s impossible to replicate. The Sink

2128 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.7766, 5340 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.444.3404, eatsnarfs.com This Boulder original needs no introduction. It’s been serving the best sammies in town for a long time, and while it might have expanded to other cities, it’s still OUR Snarf’s and always will be. Snarf’s, for those who somehow still don’t know, is the home of made-to-order, award-winning, oven-toasted sandwiches. Ingredients? The finest, duh. The best meat and cheese, veggies, an in-house blend of giardiniera peppers and homemade bread available in white, wheat or gluten free. Loyal Snarfers know about the “not on the menu” menu, which frankly has some of its best offerings. You can check it out online, but the Cheesesteak, the Reuben, the Super Club, the Snarf’s Supreme, and the Big Fat Snarf are among the items available. The restaurant caters, too, so keep it in mind for the next meeting where you want to eat food that actually tastes good. Snarf’s is a Boulder institution. May it ever be. 1165 13th St., Boulder, 303.444.7465, thesink.com The Sink is more than a bar – it’s an institution. For nearly a century, it’s been a cornerstone of University Hill, a place that defines Boulder’s college spirit and youthful energy. It’s no wonder, then, that the place offers the best happy hour in the city. Prices are only one part of the lure here – sipping on well-priced drinks in the historic confines of The Sink, with its graffiti built up over decades and inimitable ambience, is an experience that’s central to the cultural life of Boulder. Grabbing a happy hour drink at this place is contributing to a long tradition. “The Sink wouldn’t be what it is today without all the tradition, memories, patrons and employees that continue to shape it each and every day,” said Ben Heinemann, marketing manager. “Through our food and our service, we proudly carry on The Sink’s history and traditions that started more than 90 years ago.” Runner Up: West Flanders Brewing Company, 1125 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.447.2739 or wfbrews.com

Sherpa’s Restaurant

825 Walnut St., 303.440.7151, sherpasrestaurant.com It’s easy to feel as if you’re taking a trek through the Himalayas when you enter Sherpa’s Restaurant. The feeling of transport comes through the restaurant’s cuisine itself, savory and fresh takes on Indian and Nepalese recipes that taste as if they’ve come straight from a kitchen located in the far-flung stretches of the countryside of the Indian peninsula. But the food is only a part of the charm of Sherpa’s. “There are genuine Sherpas from the Himalayas here to bring a little of Nepal and Tibet to Boulder,” the restaurant claims on its website, and that touch is only one of the many authentic features at Sherpa’s. The restaurant offers other entries into the culture and traditions of the East, from its Traveler’s Library and Lounge to its regular series of cultural lectures and its connections to travel agencies. 1125 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.447.2739, wfbrews.com. West Flanders Brewing Company may be a relatively new player in Boulder’s food and drink scene, but it touts an old-world charm that goes back centuries. “We meld the quality and tradition of the Flanders region of Belgium with our own uniquely Coloradan sense of beer innovation and rule breaking,” said Ben Heinemann, marketing manager for the brewery and restaurant. “In our food and in our beer, we seek to demonstrate how craft and passion come together.” Since opening on the Pearl Street Mall in 2012, the restaurant has stayed true to that mission, offering a set of brews that includes house brews, guest taps and bottles that stand out in Colorado’s crowded marketplace. 1100 13th St., Boulder, 720.398.8331, thecornerboulder.com Take a selfie eating a plate of green stuff at The Corner and text it to your mom with the caption, “This is what college is like.” Maybe you won’t be telling the whole truth, but there’s no denying The Corner has the veggie hookup and is your healthy choice on The Hill. The Corner isn’t strictly a vegetarian restaurant, but its “V” options are Boulder’s favorites. Breakfasts, salads, soups, bowls, sides and, of course, a burger can all be had vegetarian and in some cases dairy-free and gluten-free, too. Food for thought: If you’re peckish, feast on the Roasted Beet & Goat Cheese Salad, which packs in roasted beets over a bed of fresh spring greens, goat cheese, candied pecans, pears and balsamic vinaigrette. Bowls come with a house-made sauce and a choice of grain (brown or white rice, or quinoa). The Coconut Curry Bowl, with mixed veggies and coconut curry sauce, is a triumph.

Bailey’s Wine and Spirits

4800 Baseline Road, #E101, Boulder, 303.494.3685, baileysboulder.com The 700-bottle wine selection at Bailey’s Wine and Spirits is no accident. “We try to have a little bit of everything for everyone,” says General Manager Jessie Hollister. “There is a lot of variety and choice.” The large variety won’t drown out local options, though. “It’s nice to be supportive of local businesses around us,” Hollister says. “We feature a lot of local distilleries and breweries and we’re working with vineyards to bring in more Colorado brands.” Bailey’s came under new ownership in March of last year. The new team has been working to improve the shopping experience by reorganizing the store and adapting their purchasing strategy. “We listen to what our customers are looking for and tweak the inventory to reflect that,” Hollister says. “We’re always looking to buy really good deals that fit our neighborhood better. We want everyone to know that we’re here to meet our neighborhood’s needs.”

Hazel’s Beverage World

We try to be more than just a liquor store; we want your visit to be fun and informative.” Bottom line: The Hazel’s team wants to help, and you’re going to find the right wine, whatever the occasion. “The best thing about being based in Boulder is the wide range of customer preferences and their willingness for adventure, even in their drinking habits,” says DeQuiroz. “People here are more willing to try new things and step out of their comfort zone. It makes every day exciting!

CU AND BOULDER’S BEST

1650 Broadway, Boulder, 303.449.9464, southmouthwings.com At South Mouth, wings aren’t an afterthought. Instead of treating the staple of NFL Sunday get-togethers as a complement, South Mouth approaches the dish with a due amount of respect and craft. With 11 homemade, signature sauces and five dry rubs, this casual eatery on Broadway stands out for its focused commitment to one of our favorite dishes. The restaurant doesn’t hold back when it comes to offerings for fans of spicy flavors, either. Its “You Better Not” sauce isn’t mere talk – the restaurant claims it measures one million on the Scoville Scale, and we’re inclined to take their word for it. Along with tasty offerings like their “Grizzlies Golden Honey” and “Memphis Spicy BBQ,” this kind of hand-crafted sauce makes South Mouth a standout. What’s more, their late hours of operation and delivery options make it a perfect option for those whose appetites are liable to kick in at unpredictable times. Root MMC

5420 Arapahoe Ave., Unit D, Boulder, 303.443.0240, rootmmj.com You’ve heard of the farm-to-table culinary movement. Root MMC takes a page from that responsible sourcing model with a farm-to-dispensary model. That’s because the medical marijuana dispensary is affiliated with The Farm, which grows high-grade medical marijuana that’s then carried by Root MMC. There’s plenty of dispensaries in Boulder, but Root MMC emerges as the favorite. Matthew Ray Treece, the assistant manager at Root MMC, attributes that to the calm and caring environment at the dispensary, in addition to high-quality products. Most of the staff members are medical marijuana patients themselves, which lends a compassionate and knowledgeable approach, he says. “We often hear about how cozy, warm and inviting our little shop is,” Treece says. “People enjoy our aesthetic.” In fact, he says, people drive from all over Colorado to shop at Root MMC specifically. On an ordinary day, one customer was asked “Why are you in costume.” Her reply? “Do I really need a reason?” The Ritz is a must-visit for outof-towners and locals alike. In fact, couples on a dates make stops into The Ritz before heading across the street to The Med for dinner. The shop has made it a point to maintain its style, but also grow to meet customer wants. In an acceptance speech after winning best costume shop, Zarr and Nutting had this to say: “It’s all about the experience. You’ve given the first-place trophy to CrossFit Sanitas. “The best compliment I receive on a regular basis is simply ‘thank you,’” says Tom Baker, manager of CrossFit Sanitas. “It’s a different kind of ‘thanks’ when it’s coming from someone covered in sweat, hands a bit shaky after pushing themselves through something that at one point in their lives, they never thought would be possible. It’s just one of the most sincerest ‘thank you’s’ I hear in my life.” The gym’s goal is to change people’s lives, Baker says. That doesn’t necessarily need to mean lifting the heaviest weight or running the fastest mile. It’s more about empowerment, and can come about when somebody reaches a goal as simple as being flexible enough to touch their toes or ski an entire day without stopping or keep up while playing with their kids. Fans are excited that the band finally released Resurrection. They also seem to like that the band’s frontman and singer-songwriter Clay Rose grew up in Jamestown and has spent a lot of his life in the Front Range. “I think a lot of people around here connect to the authenticity in his songwriting and how gritty our music can be, but they also just identify with him immensely as a longtime part of this community, and that’s something we definitely feel on stage around here,” Perry says. 500 W. Main St., Lyons, 303.823.0848, bluegrass.com/rockygrass A simple question folks at RockyGrass ask themselves at the end of a festival: ‘How will we pull this off again next year and make it even better?’ – that is according to Brian Eyster, vice president of communications with RockyGrass. But somehow they deliver. That’s because Eyster tirelessly recruits new artists, creates new collaborations and works to improve the overall festival experience. “Every year we talk to artists and festivarians and ask them how can we make the experience better,” he says. And because each event brings with it a sense of community, he says it fosters a broad demographic of multigenerational festival goers. Plus, its breathtaking backdrop offers a relaxing vibe thanks to Mother Nature. “It’s really dramatic with red rock cliffs next to the river. It feels like a bluegrass Nirvana…even though you’re in Boulder County.” And with the river running through these parts, fans keep cool during the sweltering dog days of July.

2685 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.402.1400, naturalgrocers.com Whether you’re shopping for fresh Romaine lettuce and feta cheese for a yummy Caesar salad or stocking up on protein powder, Natural Grocers has you covered. And let’s just face it – beating the competition was no easy task, but they did it. That’s because Natural Grocers consistently stocks their shelves with high-quality foods. “People can expect to see 100% organic produce, 100% free range eggs, 100% pasture-based dairy products and no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, and no hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils,” says Store Manager Michael Pellicori. He says customers like the store because of the homey feel and affordable prices. Plus, knowledgeable and welcoming staff offer top notch customer service. “We couldn’t be more excited to make CU and Boulder’s Best list – it shows us that what we do to support our customers is recognized and appreciated. It fuels us to keep striving to offer world class customer service to the community.”

Truth be told, this historical mountain shop is a legendary staple in Boulder County – and possibly the world, says Co-owner Shelley Dunbar. “It’s not just a place to buy Photo Courtesy: Neptune Mountaineering stuff, but to get good advice, find out where to go, and what to buy to make your experience in the outdoors better.” Whether you’re tearing it up on a backcountry gladed ski run or scaling the Flatirons, customers know they can count on knowledgeable staff at Neptune Mountaineering. “You need to have a passion for the gear and the activities to make a store like this successful,” says Dunbar. Thanks to loyal customers, the Neptune adventure shall carry on. As a new co-owner, Dunbar couldn’t be happier to receive the award. “People think of us as a community treasure which is evident in this award – and I’m grateful that we’re being recognized.”

We cater to everybody, from beginner to highly-advanced experts,” says Mazzotta. His adults who skateboard and snowboard may have started at a young age and returned to it and he’s glad adults are returning to a sport they love. “We have an older clientele when it comes to snowboarding. Plus, when all that mileage from pounding the dirt trails or pavement makes you achy, they can help put you on the mend. “We offer chiropractic, custom insoles built on-location, massage therapy, acupuncture and nutrition,” says Vieth. Now with three new runs, skiers and riders enjoy more terrain. Plus, water line upgrades mean better snowmaking earlier in the season, says Brent Tregaskis, vice president of communications with Eldora. But that’s not all. “The public is really excited about the new six-person high-speed chairlift to be in operation for the 2017-18 season.” While the old restrooms gave it an unpretentious locals feel, Tregaskis said guests really love the new look in those powder rooms. “The improvements we continue to make benefit Boulder County because you can ski locally... and avoid I-70,” he said. The EMS session does not affect the joints, according to FITtec., but reaches the deeper muscle tissue and has many benefits according to multiple studies. 1425 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.449.5260, 2525 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.449.7440, comfortableshoes.com Pedestrian Shops started in a bookstore owned by Richard Polk. Polk started selling shoes out of his Bookmobile in the late 60s, and the business has since grown into a Boulder institution with two brick-and-mortar stores. Richard’s daughters, Zoe and Lauren Polk, manage daily operations of the stores. “Pedestrian Shops is fairly unique in that we’re local and family owned and operated,” says Lauren, vice president of Pedestrian Shops. “We love both of our locations on the iconic Pearl Street Mall and in the popular Village Shopping Center, and we enjoy and thrive on being a part of this great community.” Pedestrian Shops participates in community events like Downtown Boulder’s Taste of Pearl and supports organizations like The Dairy Arts Center and Meals on Wheels. Visit one of the Pedestrian Shops during their ongoing spring break sandal sale to take advantage of discounts up to 40% off. 1155 13th St. Unit B, Boulder, 720.287.2092, bouldervaporhouse.com Sean Tanner, who co-owns Boulder Vapor House with Ginger Tanner, is proud to be a part of The Hill community of Boulder. “It’s pretty awesome to be a part of the history of The Hill,” he says. “There are decades worth of amazing culture and business and art here.” BVH not only sells over 100 flavors of e-liquid at various levels of nicotine concentrations (including nicotine-free), but they also curate a variety of local art and apparel in line with the Hill’s culture. “We like to have customers engage in a very scenic experience when they come into our shop,” Ginger says. For a dollar, anyone over 18 years of age with a valid ID can sample the e-liquid products at Boulder Vapor House. “The consumer truly values the ability to sample the product and know it’s appealing to their taste,” Sean says. “That way they can buy comfortably versus playing roulette.”

JJWells has been providing Boulder women with fashion options for 35 years. “Fashion evolves year to year and so do the needs and wants of our clients,” says Owner Dana Culbertson. “JJWells offers timeless lifestyle luxuries for women of all ages who want to be fashionable but not too trendy and understand that investing in well-made, good fitting clothing is also an investment in themselves,” she says. JJWells is both locally-owned and entirely womanowned. The staff at JJ Wells provides over 65 years of combined experience in the fashion industry and Culbertson takes great pleasure in working with the community. “I count my blessings every day for the amazing women I have met through JJWells, both clients and co-workers, and the good fortune to live and work in this beautiful town.”
