BOULDER BARS
Dives, dates and dancing
A wonderland of well drinks awaits. End your evening with a Fat Albert.
By Alexandra Sieh Colorado Daily Columnist oulder nightlife: A collection of bars in which we all throw respectability to the wind and bump ’n’ grind like we don’t have to work tomorrow. Where we bust out “The Shopping Cart,” aggressively heckle friends during billiards, and get all philosophical or introspective when the tequila turns. It’s a blast. It’s also crucial to find the right spot to go through all the feels at, bust a move, etc. Here’s a guide to the Boulder bar scene, to help you choose (and then drink) wisely.

A great first date
World Famous Dark Horse Bar And Grill 2922 W. Baseline Road The struggle can be mighty real on that first date. Nerves, expectations — it all leads to a “What the hell do I say to this hottie that won’t blow my chances?” So why not take the pressure off? When you and your date walk in, you’ll find your way to the bar, of course. Pick up a tasty Colorado craft beer or a cheaper domestic on discount, or a well-priced well drink if liquor’s more your speed.

Just plenty of tables to chat over or drink at, pool tables in the back, and a stage for all those ready to sing some sweet karaoke tunes. (You’ll catch the NSYNC and Madonna wannabes being heckled by their friends Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.) Every Thursday, catch local talent on open mic night, or challenge your fellow “regulars” to pool in their Friday night tournaments. No shame, my dears. oulder has a great craft beer scene, which means University of Colorado students have the rare opportunity to expand their beer palate beyond cubes of Rolling Rock and kegs of Keystone Light. So here is a guide to some of the places to grab a pint of IPA or stout while you aren’t coating beer pong tables with yellow fizz. Some disclaimers: If you are a freshman, stop reading this. I will not be accused of encouraging underage drinking. And please drink responsibly. Throwing up Bud Light into your toilet is one thing; puking up craft beer is just a waste. ALBUMS
Most-anticipated fall albums New favorites are about to be added to your semester’s shuffle
By Elijah Jarocki For the Colorado Daily ears from now, you’ll be taking a bullet train to your job designing fashionable safety gear for quadcopter jetpack pilots, and a song will pop up as you listen to a playlist on your phone/ wallet/tricorder that will fill you with nostalgia. You’ll remember with crystal clarity the moment you first heard it while you were cramming late at night, or maybe it will bring back a flood of memories of that amazing year at CU. That song hasn’t come out yet, but here’s a glimpse into what the future holds in store.

De La Soul
And The Anonymous Nobody (Aug. 26) Hip-hop heavyweights De La Soul are set to release their new record via Rough Trade on Aug. 26. The new album marks De La Soul’s first venture into crowdsourcing. “And The Anonymous Nobody” was funded by a kickstarter campaign that reached its goal of $110,000 in under 10 hours. In return for the record’s enormous support, De La Soul has crafted a 67-minute epic featuring artists Jill Scott, Snoop Dogg, David Byrne, Usher, 2 Chainz, Damon Albarn and more. We’ll see if this experiment pays off when “And The Anonymous Nobody” comes out in full.
Angel Olsen
My Woman (Sept. 2) “Burn Your Fire for No Witness” was a top spot on many 2014 end-of-the-year lists. Since then, Angel Olsen has been creating “My Woman.” There’s enormous pressure against Olsen, but it looks like she’s going to deliver. Singles “Shut Up

Kiss Me” and “Intern” are less low-fi than her previous releases but still hold that signature Angel Olsen charm. The 2016 releases from bedroom-pop contemporaries Car Seat Headrest and Pity Sex were also better produced than their previous albums; both records were met with varying critical reception. I’m excited to see how “My Woman” sounds on Sept. 2.
Local Natives
Sunlit Youth (Sept. 9) In a news release, Ryan Hahn says, “Forget about what we’ve done and what people expect. ... We wanted all the new songs to have a different energy, to challenge ourselves to do something different each time.” The three released singles — “Fountain Of Youth,” “Villainy” and “Past Lives” — are a definite departure from the group’s previous releases. All of the past elements are there: soaring guitars, beautiful harmonies and frantic

tor” was released on wilcoworld.net in commemoration of the one-year anniversary of 2015’s “Star Wars.” The single sounds similar to tracks on “Star Wars”: weird guitar, Jeff Tweedy drawl and alt-country sensibilities. The record will be released on dBpm, Wilco’s self-run record label. We can expect Wilco to put out a solid record. Whether it will be as groundbreaking as “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” or “Sky Blue Sky” remains to be seen.

Preoccupations
Preoccupations (Sept. 16) After major public outcry over the name Viet Cong, the Calgary four-piece changed their name to Preoccupations. The visual style is largely the same — black and white photos, slightly creepy images and the postpunk tradition of using the Helvetica typeface for album covers. I’m super excited for this one. Viet Cong put on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen and have definitely led the charge in 2016’s post-punk revival. We

CHEAP NIGHT OUT
Get the most booze for your buck
Happy hour is your friend. Keep track with an app or calendar.
By Alexandra Sieh Colorado Daily Columnist o one wants to be the deal-obsessed coupon clipper. We all love to publicly roll our eyes at those rambling about BOGO deals and their latest find from the clearance rack. But let’s be real. Rent’s a bitch, student loans are no joke, and the older you get, the harder it is to flirt your way to a free drink. So let’s embrace sensible spending. I assure you, drink specials get you just as boozed up as the full-price ones.

Want cheap booze? Trick question. Of course you do.
Well there’s an app for that. Or a site, or some technological gadgetry that’ll guide you to your nearest happy hour. Like drinkinthebuff.com. A couple of website smarties set up a site that tells you who’s hosting a happy hour at the time you log on. They also have deals sorted by location, via a nifty map, or by just name of the place. It’s actually super helpful, detailing what times the happy hour runs from, what type of cuisine it has, etc. There’s also boulderhappy hours.com. It’s a bit simpler — just a list of all the eateries, bars, breweries, etc., in town with their happy hours Jeremy Papasso / Staff Photographer listed. Bars from page 6 Keep walking back and you’ll find bar activities and a couple more tables. Go downstairs, and you’ll hit the source of all sorts of pool tables, arcade games and a second bar to keep you hydrated. Anyone around 6 feet may want to watch their noodles — the ceilings are low, but it’s well worth the possible head injury. If the night’s right, you’ll catch some live music. On your way out, pucker up. That big ol’ buffalo head is waiting for a kiss — a tradition for any and all Boulder residents and students looking for good luck. Not too shabby — always guaranteed a kiss good night.
Sip up ‘that purple drink’
Attic Bar and Bistro 949 Walnut St. For no reason in particular, the Attic was often my group’s end-of-the-night stop before teetering home. We’d wander up the stairs and make our way through the cramped room to the bar in

the corner. And then, no matter what we’d been drinking all night, the order was the same: “We’ll take four of the ... uh ... you know that purple drink, with the vodka?” That, friends, is the Fat Albert, the Attic Bar drink of choice. Once you have one of those in hand, you can find a table near the live band that’s performing, or settle in on the couches near the pool tables and arcade games. Even a trip to the bathroom is interesting, with so many messages carved into the wood of the stalls. A very low-key spot with excellent drink specials all week.
Bourbon lovers, unite
The West End Tavern 926 Pearl St. The goal: to bring all sorts of Kentucky bourbon love to Boulder. And boy, do the folks at The West End Tavern succeed. Not only do they have a long list of bourbons, they know just how to mix them into cocktails even bourbon skeptics could sip
with glee. The craft beer on tap and the not-bourbon cocktails offer an alternative for your other friends, as will a menu with creative dishes to soak up all that liquor. When the Wing King Challenge rolls around, expect saucecovered faces to come staggering out as folks try to eat their way through 50 wings in 30 minutes. Snow specials make the cold weather bearable, as do other weekday specials. Once the weather thaws, head to the second floor and check out the patio overlooking Pearl.
Lover of the local dive bar
The Sundown Saloon 1136 Pearl St. What can I say? I’m a dive bar lover. A place where your high heels and socks-’n’-sandals combos are both welcome, and any shuffleboard skill level will suffice. The bar where older folks hustle “The Young and the Intoxicated” at pool, and where the bathrooms always have a line.
See BARS, page 35
Paul Aiken / Staff Photographer Once you walk down those stairs, you’ll enter a magical dive where the ceilings are low and the employees are exceedingly patient.

Follow your favorite spot
You’d be amazed how many of your favorite bars and breweries are online, tempting you with sweet deals or new beer releases while you’re sneaking onto Facebook during class. I’ve found, in my reporting travels, most will preview a new beer release or a band’s performance with a quick post on Facebook and/or Twitter, making sure you know in plenty of time to lie your way out of an awkward dinner with that high school friend who’s in town for the night. You’ll also find a lot of places have deals specifically listed on their websites. I know that’s a pain in the ass, but hey. What else do you have to do, besides homework?

Breweries are creatures of habit. Most will release new beers or hold happy hours at the same times each week. The folks at Twisted Pine Brewing (3201 Walnut St.) host a couple all-day happy hours. On Tuesday, you’ll get $1 pints and a couple food specials, and on Friday, you’ll get pitchers on discount. Over at Finkel and Garf Brewing Co. (5455 Spine Road, Suite A), the
brewers release a new beer every Wednesday. When it’s gone, it’s gone, so you’d best hustle those buns over each Hump Day. I could go on and on, but every brewery has its own weekly routine. Just sync it up to yours, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a regular. Bars, well, they’re even easier. Just plug into what their weekly specials are — typically a set of hours each

their house brews, which occasionally includes a coffee kolsch that one of my co-workers loves more than most people.
Don’t have time to sit down at a brewery or a taphouse? You can always get your craft beer to go. Hazel’s Beverage World on 28th Street looks and feels like Costco, if Costco sold only alcohol. They have a wide variety of craft beers, and to get the most variety out of your visit, you can make your own six-packs with single beers. And like Costco, there is a tasting area where breweries will sometimes hand out samples of their beer for you to try. And yes, they sell Keystone Light, too, in case you feel like ignoring all of my painstaking research. Mitchell Byars: twitter.com/ mitchellbyars

Bars from page 22 At the Downer, there’s darts and foosball, and a whole slew of chipped and crooked tables ideal for playing cards or quarters. PBR is usually cheap, and the second bar in the back offers relief from the crowded and tangled mess that is the main bar in the middle of the action. The ceilings are low and the employees are exceedingly patient. And to think — all this greatness just a stairway away along Pearl Street.
Sort out the stereotypes
the bar. For those less inclined to joystick operation, there are plenty of tables to sip your cocktails at. And toward the back, that’s where the dance party begins. The dance floor fills up quick with those bumping and grinding to pop-music remixes and techno grooves. A perfect combo for that couple torn between game love and dance delight. You’ll also find themed nights like trivia nights and discount booze deals. Check in on Facebook
or their website for the details.
Get your slice of local history
The Sink 1165 13th St. Over off 13th Street, The Sink is well known for its more famous diners — Guy Fieri, Barack Obama, Robert Redford. But it’s you, its foxy fresh customers, the folks at The Sink adore most. Their pizza menu alone is enough to hook any food lover, with
plenty of toppings and odd pairings to pique your interest. The same goes with burgers, sandwiches, etc. If the food doesn’t captivate you enough, the walls sure will. For years, folks have been inking their names all along the walls, mingling with fantastic artwork that paints The Sink’s history. You’ll see Redford’s image there, nestled among various illustrations. In the back, black lights will turn you all technicolor in the wee hours of the evening.
Weekly happy hours keep you smiling with local brews and great liquor alike. The Walrus Saloon 1911 11th St. We never really understood what brought us there, when we’d skip down a couple stairs and enter the oddity that is The Walrus Saloon. The dance floor would be full of those doing every move from the common mosh-pit to the Lawn Mower. (Oh wait ... that was me.) The bar was always packed — everyone looking for the basic well drinks, surprise shots and domestic beers. The barrels supplied the daring with booze-soaked peanuts they’d munch as their friends played pool or air hockey. It’s how we got our typical collegetown bar fix. But it would also surprise you, with events like table tennis tournaments or online releases of DJ mixes to download. It may not be anyone’s favorite, but it’s definitely a spot we all stop by.
Gamers’ delight
Press Play 1005 Pearl St. Don’t worry. I know how real the struggle is. When you want to go out, but you’re almost through Level 26 and maybe after that ... For me, it’s, “Oh hell, I just lost my whole day to a Criminal Minds marathon.” But for those true-blue gamers out there, never fear. You can still be social — you just have to forego the game for as long as it takes to get your bum over to Press Play. From there, it’s games galore, lining the walls with all skill levels sending pings and crashes echoing across

PROGRAM COUNCIL
These guys know how to throw a party CU’s Program Council brings movies and live music to campus By Alexandra Sieh Colorado Daily Columnist ith age comes wisdom. After 50 years, well, let’s just say the Program Council has become pretty darn wisdom-ous. In one iteration or another, this group has brought all sorts of entertainment to campus, through live music, major motion pictures and more. Since its start, folks with the Program Council have drawn big names to Boulder, from Elvis Costello to the Grateful Dead. More recently, Wyclef Jean, Kygo, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have come to town. A little something for everyone, and that doesn’t even count annual events like the Welcomefest Concert. The event is held every fall at Farrand Field and brings the same big energy you’ve come to expect from Program Council concerts, with thousands crowding in for the show. Battle of the Bands also brings the beats, challenging up-and-coming artists to bust out the best they have. They get the chance to share their music with an audience eager to lap it all up. Danny Brown
TBA (TBD) Indie-rap mastermind Danny Brown will release a new record sometime before the end of 2016. In June, he put out a video called “When It Rain” that exploded on YouTube. The MC shared in a recent interview with Pitchfork that the new record will be heavily inspired by Talking Heads’ “Fear Of Music” and “Little Creatures,” and Radiohead’s “A Moon Shaped Pool.” With those influences and Brown’s rap prowess, it would be hard to put out a flop. Hopefully the new Danny Brown record won’t turn into a Frank Ocean scenario.

Will the Gorillaz get their act together for 2016?
LCD Soundsystem
TBA (TBD) One thing’s for sure, when LCD Soundsystem puts out a new record, it will be a huge deal. The group, after supposedly calling it quits in
2014 with their Madison Square Garden gig (remember that?), recently announced a slew of festival appearances, tour dates and new recordings. The opinion is largely split on the dance-
TBA (TBD) It’s a long shot whether the Gorillaz will get their act together and release a new record in 2016. That being said, if the Gorillaz can once again release something on the scale of their self-titled first record, they could push hip-hop in a totally different direction. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett haven’t released a record since 2011’s “The Fall.” As with Facebook LCD Soundsystem, the record had better be incredible or the Gorillaz simply punkers’ return. Big ’uns. Like, Gabriel-sized, but also detachable. I wonder where I would even store those, come to think of it. So I have some questions. Will I get a dead, stuffed pair of wings since I don’t want them growing out of my body? I’m just imagining the smell since they’ll probably lean up against the wall in the kitchen when I’m not flying. Also, how do I launder the them? I anticipate flying to some dirty places. And I’m not super keen on cleaning them with my mouth, if that’s what it is. I don’t want to become a bird — I just want to fly. What is your preferred method of disposing of the body? Coyotes. ruthless little killing machine that you’ve named Sir Reginald Doilymuffins. Scientists have said recently that cats just see humans as bigger cats. Imagine if they thought we were smaller than they are. Hmmmm ... puurrrrrrrrrrr ... If you were 6 inches tall, which animal would be your mighty steed? I would answer my beloved and trusty sidekick and fourlegged friend Ford, who is a Portuguese Podengo Pequeno. In reality though, he’s a spastic mini ninja on stilts, so I think it would actually be hard to hold onto him. I’m thinking something less cheetah and a little more Bambi ... ah, yes. The animal I would choose would be the mighty, pint-sized dik-dik of Indonesia. It’s a 1-foot-tall deer (technically an antelope) that is also the most precious thing in the world. Please Google image search the dik-dik (possible NSFW depending on your settings) if you’re one of those happy people. OMG, his little saddle would be freaking adorable.
