What does a creak-riddled, almost-30-year-old lass tell someone so new to the world of bar hopping and brewery binging? How about a story. Long ago, there was a young journalist fresh out of college. Jay Som and American Grandma

Sept. 14 The Ogden Theatre Lose yourself to dance. Surrender to the rhythm. And you will find yourself completely overwhelmed by the bass-heavy groove of Thundercat’s music. Buttery synth notes, gracefully syncopated beats, and vocals from the likes of Kenny Loggins to Wiz Khalifa always seek to surprise and impress.

Sept. 10 The Fox Theatre Jay Som, otherwise known as Melina Duterte, is dreamy bedroom pop perfection. Hailing from the Bay area, Duterte’s music falls in line with indie pop sweethearts like Alex G and Mac Demarco. Local favorites American Grandma are also on the bill. Their sound is magical: raw and powerful yet ambient and spacey. If you’re ready for something lush, summery and just a little whimsical, definitely check this one out.

Sept. 15 Fox Theatre Cherry Glazerr, which began as the bedroom project of then-teenager Clementine Creevy, has been a fixture in the independent music scene for a while. Spanning a vast assortment of sounds and energies, Cherry Glazzer has migrated from noisey bedroom pop to nineties rock to being featured on a Death Grips track. But through everything, Cherry Glazerr maintains a contagious energy that’s

Eight albums about to drop Keep an ear out this semester for new music on the horizon

By Jolie Klefeker For the Colorado Daily ike friendship and coffee, music is an essential element for surviving the college experience. Good tunes can fuel a manic cram session and help reset stress levels after tangling with a group project. Everyone brings some music with them to campus, along with a toothbrush, a decent blanket and a stash of (hopefully) clean underwear. But if you leave CU without an album that encompasses that year you asked out your crush, finally decided on your major and learned how to tie your shoes with your teeth, then what are you doing with your life? Here’s a sampling of albums so ripe, they’re ready to drop on your head.

have confirmed that their sixth official studio album, “American Dream,” will be out on Columbia/DFA records Friday. “Call the Police” and “American Dream,” singles from the new album, are a little more tame, cynical and introspective than the dancepunk bangers and hits that drove the group to success.

For instance, the title track recounts the emptiness of a hungover morning after a one-night stand. But the change in tempo is an evolution in the LCD sound, one that portends well for the album. It’s always been a pleasure to watch LCD Soundsystem, to grow up and grow with them. I’m very curious to see

from page 8 first place. This isn’t to say that their record is just a reiteration of the last — both of their new singles sound more produced, fuller and larger. They’re also shockingly synth-heavy considering the self-titled release could most definitely be described as guitar dominant. When the guitars do show up, they take on a very overcast, shoegaze sound. This change might not be appealing to those attached to Alvvays’ first record, but I’m intrigued to see what the band will do with a larger, pop-oriented song. I’m willing to say that I’m hopeful.

Deerhoof

“Mountain Moves” Sept. 8 It’s been a busy year for Deerhoof. They’ve been working on various side projects such as Nervous Cop, which features members of Death Grips, as well as recording their next studio album. Two singles have dropped in preparation for “Mountain Moves,” and both are promising. The first, “I Will Spite Survive” featuring Jenn Wasner, kicks off with an unmistakable ’90s pop rock sound supplemented by an almost baroque riff on the synth. Bassist/singer Satomi Matsuzaki’s sugary sweet voice juxtaposes the more sultry voice of Wye Oak’s Wasner to create delightful harmony.

The second single, “Your Dystopic Creation Doesn’t Fear You” featuring Awkwafina, kicks of with a slackerrock vibe that immediately jumps into an old hip-hop kind of sound provided by rapper/comedian Awkwafina. The track continues to jump in and out of lazier slacker-rock interludes and more upbeat guitars that back Matsuzaki’s signature shrill vocals. It’s hard to say if these singles suggest a change or a continuation, because Deerhoof has traditionally been all over the place, and that’s what makes them great.

Ariel Pink

“Dedicated to Bobby Jameson” Sept. 15 June saw the announcement of Ariel Pink’s newest album, “Dedicated to Bobby Jameson.” If you haven’t heard, Jameson was a musician who found cult success in the 1960s working with members of The Rolling Stones and releasing the album “Songs of Protest and Anti-Protest” under the name Chris Lucey in 1965. Jameson left the music industry in 1985 after he was unable to receive significant payment for his creative endeavors, and he passed away in 2015. Ariel Pink has spoken of the connection he feels to Jameson and his life story, and this album is inspired by that connection. As to be expected with Ariel Pink, be on the lookout for freaky,

St. Vincent

TBA TBA In June, St. Vincent dropped a new single, “New York,” in conjunction with announcing a tour. One can only assume that this is the single off of her forthcoming album, but no official release dates have been announced yet. “New York” sounds pretty different from the noisey, artistic chaos of Annie Clark’s last record. It’s minimal and calm, lacking her typically intricate guitar playing. But it manages to retain her signature, witty lyricisms. Lyrically, Die Antwoord are clinically insane, absolutely mental, say it how you will. They’re crazy. Bars

Build your own pub crawl Boulder’s best bars cater to hoppers and regulars

By Mitchell Byars Staff Writer eauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that is also true when it comes to Boulder’s bars. I was tasked with coming up with a list of the best bars in town, but considering my bar for ... bars simply reads “have booze” and “have chairs to drink booze in,” I realized my rankings might not jive with everyone. So instead, I will just list off some of the best qualities of the bars in town and you Jeremy Papasso / Staff Photographer can make your own decision. The Bitter Bar is where you go when you’re feeling fancy and want to drink something you’ve never tasted Because we all know that before. decisions are just one of the things you are totally awesome at after drinking all night.

WELCOME BACK SPECIAL:

I am not big on dancing. If you have ever seen me try to dance, you know this is for the best. Plus I keep spilling my beer when I try. But I know a lot of people want to get their freak on, especially

after a night of imbibing. So if you are looking for a place to dance, check out Press Play, the Walrus and Boulder House. The good thing is they are all relatively close to each other in downtown Boulder (in case the patrons at a particular establishment don’t appreciate your suave moves).

Into the pool

Need a quieter place to shoot some pool or play some other bar games? Well, downtown Boulder has that, too. There is the Attic, which serves a purple vodka-heavy drink called the Fat Albert; the Sundown Saloon, which serves a hipster-heavy drink called PBR; and the Pearl Street Pub, which has a large buffalo head you can kiss once you’ve had sufficient quantities of PBR and vodka.

I’m so fancy

Up where we belong

Boulder has some great views, so you might as well find a place to enjoy them. The Rio has a rooftop bar and some of the strongest margaritas in town. The Lazy Dog has a rooftop and a ton of apps and beer. The West End Tavern has a rooftop and a chicken wing challenge. I recommend you not try all three on the same day.

The big game

From the Super Bowl champs to the bowl-bound CU Buffs to the resurgent Rockies, there are a ton of sports teams to root for in Colorado. Also, the Colorado Avalanche play sometimes. If you are looking for a place to watch the game while also grabbing a beer and some food, there are a few places to check out. The Dark Horse Bar and Grill is a local favorite, and their cheap weekend student deals make it a popular place to

And for the workaholic woman in love with craft beer, there were all sorts of wonderlands awaiting her and her hopped-up friends. Thus the Beer Girl was born. Four years later, you could see that same journalist “out on assignment” guzzling flights with a stupid sort of grin, insisting she was doing research as she tumbled from her stool. When she showed up to work in beersoaked boots, they needn’t worry — she wasn’t drunk, she’d just doused herself in a pint the night before during a beer tour. (Lesson Three: Breweries are awesome.)

So it went, pint after pitcher, pound after pant size. She expanded her horizons — and her belt loops — until she packed her bags for China. That was it. She’d escaped the chaos ... to a land of 23 million people where draft beers were even cheaper than they were back home and oh fuck. Yes, I’m that girl. Now the Píjiu Nurén, I’ve survived the chaos and secret charm of Boulder’s nightlife. The final lesson: Be smart and be safe. Be precisely who you are, as long as that person isn’t an asshole. You’ll find your place, just as I found mine ... on a stool in every brewery in town. Read more Sieh: colorado daily.com/columnists. Stalk her: instagram.com/ wildeyed_wandering.

Beer

A rainbow of rare brews

The Boulder brewery scene keeps growing every year

By Mitchell Byars Staff Writer re you a University of Colorado student? Over the age of 21? Sick of drinking warm kegs of light beer? Tired of your journalism professor saying you shouldn’t start off articles with questions? Well, you are in luck! Because what follows is a guide to Boulder’s craft beer scene that was written after lots of painstaking research that involved going around and drinking beer and writing down acute observations like, “Beer is

In case you have read one of these before or are already mostly familiar with the Boulder brewery scene, let’s get the recent news out of the way and go through some of the newer breweries. Kettle and Spoke is a tiny nano-brewery that is located inside a company that designs bike and urban gear from recycled materials, #BecauseBoulder. You can’t just buy a fat sack and then torch it right outside the pearly gates of the dispensar y. In Colorado, cannabis can’t be consumed openly in public, and violators will be issued a ticket. The University of Colorado policy says it’s illegal for anyone (regardless of age) to have or use marijuana on campus in any form, even with a prescription. Program Council

Jeremy Papasso / Staff Photographer Fans throw their hands in the air like they just don’t care during a concert on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder.

Watch big acts before the hype wave hits

Cliff Grassmick / Staff Photographer Students rock out on Farrand Field during Welcomefest.

CU’s Program Council brings concerts, film and comedy to campus By Alexandra Sieh Colorado Daily Columnist hat do Cyndi Lauper, Sharon Osbourne, Pierce Brosnan (aka James Fucking Bond) and the University of Colorado’s Program Council all have in common? Admittedly not much. But they are all 64 and still as kick-ass as ever. Since its beginnings in 1953, Program Council has been bringing the university live entertainment, film screenings and more. Better yet, they’ve prided themselves on having a keen eye for artists that are, as current director Ari Kononov put it, pre-“hype-wave.” Whether it was The Who or The Grateful Dead, back in the ’70s and ’80s, or Chance the Rapper in 2014,

W

Program Council finds artists just entering their prime. Now with a more stable budget and better resources, folks at Program Council are “attempting to bring artists of current equal fame to our campus prior to their prime era of fame and success,” Kononov explains. As Kononov sees it, “college students are the best demographic to target in terms of being up to date with what music is about to blow up.” And with everyone on staff being a college student themselves, it’s easy for Program Council to remain as connected to their audience as ever. As Kononov puts it, plenty of students don’t realize “other students are putting on these events themselves.”

30 • AUGUST 31, 2017 • WELCOME BACK

For those involved, Program Council offers realworld experience. Whether it’s “managing budgets and venues, booking talent, (or) building connects in (the) industry,” Kononov says, the employees at Program Council are “experiencing a taste of the high-pressure, high-reward environment that comes with working in entertainment full-time.” Ultimately, that’s what makes it works. Students working hard to bring other students together for a good time in a safe and secure environment. This year’s Welcomefest, held last Saturday, featured D.R.A.M., a rapper, singer and producer best known for his Lil Yachty collaboration “Broccoli.” Boulderbased DJ duo MTNMEN,

rapper Noname and musician Vanic also brought their considerable talents to Farrand Field. Welcomefest may be one of Program Council’s biggest events, but there’s more to come. Keep your eye on Program Council all year — they’ve set their goals high for the level of entertainment they hope to provide. Sold yet? If you’re ready to join the team, leave Wednesday nights free. Every week at 6 p.m. in the Program Council office (UMC 401), a group of like-minded folks will gather to find out how they can help. No matter if its marketing an upcoming event or applying for their production and security teams, you’ll be entering

into this entertainment-driven community. Maybe you’re not ready for the commitment. You can still up the ante by becoming a Gold List member (programcouncil.com/ membership). Folks who sign up will get discounted tickets, front-of-the-line access and chances to win free merchandise. At the very least, get cyber connected. Columnist Q&A

Klefeker knows what’s ‘On-Air Next’ Jolie has the musical scoop every Thursday

By Deanna Hardies Colorado Daily Editor olie Klefeker is the new music director for Radio 1190, and as such is entrusted with the sacred duty of supplying a constant stream of new music to the ears at CU and beyond. Get to know the musical muse orchestrating what plays on the airwaves. After a successful interview, the Gods of Small Annoyances have hired you as an entry-level deity. How will your worshipers praise your name? i think that capitalization and punctuation are annoying and while i acknowledge their necessity in formal writing i don’t when i am sending text messages or emails i feel like people get the point either way so why put in the extra work Oh no! You’re missing a finger. How did that happen? In all seriousness, trying to fix or build something that I shouldn’t be. I’m a crafty lady and proud of it, but my bullheaded determination to “do it myself” often forces me into humbling and embarrassing situations. That astronomer friend who owes you $100 has just discovered the large “Planet X” just beyond Pluto’s orbit. She offers you naming rights to get out of debt. What’s the name that’ll go in future textbooks? “I’m not fond of humanity’s hubristic desire to name everything after ourselves.” That’s the name. You wake up to a string of epithets shouted in a familiar voice. Gordon Ramsay is pacing in your bedroom, and he won’t go away until you cook something worth his time. What dish can you

make to appease him? A knuckle sandwich. Wake up, sheeple! It’s a conspiracy! They’ve got everyone fooled, but you know the truth. What are They covering up? Hilary won the election. And mumble rappers actually embrace complex metaphor that goes way over the head of your average music critic. They’ve transcended us all and have found a more authentic means of communication. What new musical genre will take over the charts in 2018? Mumble rap. You have died and become a ghost. (My condolences.) What place or object do you haunt, and how do you express your otherworldly frustration? I would haunt Radio 1190 to complete my tenure as music director. I would use the special ghost powers of

invisibility and telepathy to ensure that all of our DJs continue to play quality independent music for our listeners. You’ve managed to slip a subliminal message into every iPhone on the planet. How will you know when it’s working? All of my friends will be listening to Thin Lizzy on Spotify. This isn’t a joke. I would actually tell everyone to listen to “Jailbreak” by Thin Lizzy. Rock ’n’ roll isn’t cool with the young people anymore, and I guess I can accept that. But I can’t accept someone having lived their entire life without listening to this album all the way through. No way. Stop reading this immediately, go home, and put this album on. Your life will change for the better. Klefeker is Radio 1190’s music director. Read more: colorado daily.com/columnists

Hosted by Bodhi Shane Melnitzer 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays Party With Me Punker is not for the fainthearted. It is, however, for the punks, freaks, outcasts and fools who want to have a good ol’ time listening to punk. Bodhi, who has been collecting punk records for decades, plays all vinyl and encourages listeners to sing or, better, scream the lyrics along with him over the AM airwaves. Check it out for vinyl, fun and impeccable punk knowledge.

Hosted by Grace Eun Cho 4 to 6 p.m. Fridays Local Shakedown always has and always will be the best show on Radio 1190. Hosts and times may change, but 1190 has always strived to maintain a genuine connection with local music in Colorado, and we continue to do so every week. By Deanna Hardies Colorado Daily Editor ou’ve got so many questions: What are the best local acts? How do I get the most bang for my buck when it comes to speaker systems? How do blind people experience hallucinogens? Duncan Taylor is the man to answer your questions (except maybe that last one). He’s your dude on the inside of the audio equipment industry and a friendly face in the crowd at a concert. only one. After years of research and maniacal laughter, you’ve finally created a terrifying hybrid of plant and animal. It’s alive! Dear god, what have you done? I’ve made a huge tiny mistake. I was aiming for a moving creature with plant-like skin that could produce its own oxygen, but I ended up with this pitiful, stationary, wailing demon of a rooted chupacabra that I can still hear when I lay my head

Taylor from page 37

down to sleep at night. I have no clue what to do next. After a successful interview, the Gods of Small Annoyances have hired you as an entry-level deity. How will your worshipers praise your name? I will be the God of Nailing Your Gum with an Overeager Toothbrush Stroke. My lady Goddess of Feeling It All Day will be by my side. Oh no! You’re missing a finger. How did that happen? Well. I uh ... I’m what you

might call a chronic degenerate gambler. I’m also missing three toes, two cars and every baseball card I ever owned. And I have a tattoo of someone else’s face on my chest. Life is what you make of it, that’s what I always say. The U.S. Treasury announces it will begin issuing 7-dollar bills. Whose face will be on it? Obviously Trump’s face; $7 is ridiculous. What new musical genre will take over the charts in

2018? Dumb music for angry idiots. No, really — it will be tongue-in-cheek when it’s introduced by musicians united against the current administration. But then it will be picked up and worn as a badge of honor by those who similarly publish 1,000 eyepopping tweets in six months. It combines the monster bass drops of hyper EDM with the three power chord musical magic of a strung out punk band. It will be one guy on

stage with a guitar and a laptop and a horde of angry backup dancers. You have died and become a ghost. (My condolences.) What place or object do you haunt, and how do you express your otherworldly frustration? I would haunt the monthly flood warning sirens and announcer lady voice that rockets around the foothills. It’s already 100 percent creepy sounding, but the words are oddly soothing —

“This ... is just ... a test ...” All I would do is change up the words a bit. “This ... is your last ... chance ...” “It ... all ends ... today ...” Centuries from now, only five words remain legible on your grave. What are they? “Here ... defeated ... magma ... boxing ... evermore.” Read more Taylor: colorado daily.com/columnists. Stalk him: instagram.com/ duncanxmusic.
