Thatgroupfolded,butafter hehitontheideaofforminga uniquesoundwith aclarinet playingthemelodiclinewith saxophonesupport,hetried againin1938.
Thatgroupbrokeattendance recordsupanddown theEastCoastandsoon recordedsuchhitsas“Tuxe-
doJunction,”“Inthe Mood”and“Pennsylvania 6-5000.”
Hehad a“MoonlightSerenade”radioseries. Thebandwasinthefilm “Sun ValleySerenade”in1941; thatmovieintroducedthemillion-selling“Chattanooga Choo-Choo.”
World WarIIbrokeoutin late1941,andmusiciansand otheryoungmenstartedgettingdraftnotices.
MillerwentintotheU.S.
Armyin1942andwas assignedtotheArmySpecialistCorps,wherehemodernizedthearmyband.
Hewastransferredintothe ArmyAirCorps,wherehe organizedtheGlennMiller ArmyAirForceBand.
Inlate1943,hewenttoEnglandto realizehisgoalof entertainingthefighting troops.
There,thebandengagedin morethan800performances inlessthan ayear.
Inthefallof1944,theband wasscheduledtogoon asixweektourofEurope.
Millerflewaheadtomake arrangements,boardinga planeonDec.15 —andwas neverseenagain.Hisplaneis believedtohavecrashedinto theEnglishChannel,possibly fromconcussionsfrombombs droppedtherewhen abombingmissionwasaborted.

Huntingopportunitiesalso existforriverbottomdeerand turkey.
MorganCountyisColorado’smostestablishedwaterfowlhuntinggrounds —locatedalongthePlatteRiver Valley.MorganCountyliesin
thedirectpathofthesemigratorybirds.
Themajorityofaccessible huntingliesin Weldon Valley, Brush,BrushPrairiePonds, Cottonwood,Snyder,Elliott andJacksonLake.
However,thereisalarge portionof“walk-inaccess” huntingareasthataremanagedbytheCPW.Theselands areusuallyopenforhunting unlessthefarmersareharvesting.

ThehistoryofBrush’s annual4thofJulyRodeois,in essence,thehistoryofBrush.
Whileitwasofficiallyorganizedin1954,the rootsofthe celebrationgobacktothe turnofthecentury—thelast century.
Around1900,localcowboys,farmers,theirwivesand girlfriendswouldmeetforthe holidayin apasturejustwest ofthepresentMemorialPark for adayofpicnickingand horseracing.
In1924, agroupofbusi-
nessmenledbyJ.R. Ryland andAlonzoPetteyspurchasedlandnearthatpasture for apark.Theygavetheland tothetown,and residents built agrandstandandlaidout anewtrack.TheAmerican Legionstagedthefirst rodeo andracemeetin1925.Later, theshowbecame acommunityprojectwithvolunteer workersandprofessional rodeoperformers.
Pari-mutuelbettingonhorseswaslegalizedinColorado in1949,andthatyearBrush heldthestate’sfirstsuch event.Thenewhorseraces werenot,however,heldstrictlyinconjunctionwiththe town’sannualIndependence Dayfestivities.
Itwasn’tuntil1954thatthe BrushJuniorChamberof Commercebegansponsoring theevent,andtoday’scelebrationformatwasborn. Sincethattime,special eventshavecomeandgone–includingpie-eatingcontests, softball“grudge”matches, beardgrowingcontests, greasedpigchasesandcowchiphurlingcompetitions–buttheessencestaysthe same.
Featuredeventsthisyear willinclude ropingandfull rodeocompetitionsbeginning at 7p.m.,July2-3-4.OnJuly3, slackeventswillbeginat9 a.m.andwillincludebarrel racing,calf roping,team ropingandbulldoggingorsteer wrestling.
Concludingtheholidayand rodeofestivitieswillbethe fireworkssponsoredbythe BrushRodeoAssociation, withthecooperationand assistanceoftheBrush VolunteerFireDepartment.

Theparkboaststhreecampgroundswith atotalof141 campsites.Itcanaccommodate thelargestmotorhomesas wellasthesmallestpuptents.
ElksCampground,atthe northendofthepark,offers50 developedcampsitesincluding 30-ampelectricalhookups, shadeshelters,picnictables andfirepits. Acentrally-locatedcamperservicesbuilding offers ameeting room,flush restrooms,coin-operated showersandlaundryfacilities fromApriltoOctober.The campgroundisopenyearround,butthewatersystems

TheColoradoDepartment ofAgriculturedefinestheterm as“activities,eventsandservices relatedtoagriculturethat takeplaceonoroffthefarmor ranch,andthatconnectconsumerswiththeheritage,naturalresourceorculinaryexperiencetheyvalue.”The CDAnotesthatthe2007 USDAAgCensusidentified some679Coloradofarms offeringagritourismand recreationalservices,totalingnearly $33millioninfarmincome.
WhenSwedlundheard abouttheconcept,shethought theSwedlundranchnear NorthSterlingReservoir, knownforitshistoricalsignificance,wouldbetheperfect placetoinvitepeopletoexperiencesomehistoricalelegance.

2014after anearlysevenmonthclosureduetoflood damagefromhistoricflooding inSeptember2013onthe SouthPlatteRiver.
Restorationand repairscost hundredsofthousandsofdollars,butnearlyallofthework wascompletewhenthemuseum reopeneditsdoorsfor guestsduring regularbusinesshours.The reopening coincidedwiththearrivalofa specialtravelingexhibitfrom theSmithsonianInstitutethat hasinspired anewcatch-
phrase –“Everybodyhasa journeystory. What’syours?” --andpermanent,evolving exhibitatthemuseum.The LoganCountyJourneyStories exhibitshowcasesindividuals whohavebeeninterviewed fortheHartwayOralHistory Project,createdinhonorof Marion“Red”andRuthHartway,topreservethestoriesof LoganCounty residents.
Thefocusofthemuseumis onpreservingandsharingthe historyoftheOverland Trail andtheheritageoftheearly settlerswhotraveledit.“Items wehaveherewereitemsthe
firstsettlersbroughtwith themanditemsdonatedby theirfamilies,”saidmuseum curatorKayRich.
Sinceitsbeginningasa WorksProgressAdministration(WPA)project,additions totheoriginalbuildinghave transformeditinto ashowcaseofnaturalhistory, natives andsettlers.
Itishometo aone-of-a-kind RuralElectrificationofAmericaexhibitintheDaveHamil building.Themuseumhas alsoacquiredovertheyearsa collectionofareahistoric buildings —someofthem originals,some reproductions —thatforma“village”inthe museumcourtyard.Thevillageexhibitis acollectionof severalbuildingsthatinclude theStoneyButtesone room school, acountyEvangelical LutheranConcordiaChurch, DaileyCountryStore, ablacksmithshop, abarbershop, KargBarn,aswellasthe

TheJumboReservoir,which residesinbothLoganand SedgwickCounties,holds 1,570acresofwater.Anglers canexpectqualityfishingfor walleye,smallmouthbasschannelcatfishandbeautifulrainbowtrout.Fishingpressureis generallylow.TheJumboState WildlifeAreaalsooffersboat ramps,picnicareas,primitive restrooms,campsites,hiking trails,wildlifeviewingandice fishinginthewintermonths.
ThestatewildlifeareaislocatedonCountyRoad95,two milesnorthofHighway138.
Asof2011, regulations requirethatanyoneages19-64 usingtheJumboorPrewitt ReservoirsSWAs,whodonot hold acurrenthuntingorfishinglicense,mustpurchasea userpermitfor$36.
ThePrewittReservoirisalso managedasanSWAbyColoradoParksand Wildlife.Itis locatedinLoganand WashingtoncountiesonHighway6.At fullcapacity,thePrewittholds 2,431acresofwater,whichhas anabundanceofwalleye,saugeye,channelcatfishandblack crappiefish.Anglersmayalso catchwiper,northernpikeand rainbowtrout.Amenities include aboatramp,picnic areas,primitive restrooms, campsites,hikingtrailsand wildlifeviewingareas.

Cabela’s,amongthebestknownoftheworld’s outfittersofhunting, fishingandoutdoorgear,was bornsomewhatinadvertently in1961whenDickCabela cameupwith aplantosell fishingflieshepurchased whileat afurnitureshowin Chicago.Upon returning hometoChappell,Neb.,Dick ran aclassifiedadinthe Casper,Wyo.,newspaper reading:“12hand-tiedfliesfor $1.”Itgeneratedone response.Undaunted,Dick formulated anewplan, rewritingtheadto read:“FREE Introductoryoffer! 5hand-tied Flies...25cPostage...Handling”andplacingitinnationaloutdoormagazines.Itdidn’t takelongfortheordersto beginarrivingfromsportsmenandwomenaroundthe country.
Intypicaldirect-mailstyle, eachorderwasmailedout
with amimeographedcatalog ofoutdooritemsDickandhis wife,Mary, addedtotheir productline.Inthebeginning, DickandMaryranthebusinessfromthekitchentableof theirhomeinChappell.
By1964,continuedsuccess andgrowthdemanded abiggerandbetterlocation.The operationmovedtothebasementofDick’sandyounger brotherJim’sfather’sfurniturestore,andthenontovariousbuildingsinChappell.In 1969,Cabela’swasoperating in a50,000square-footvacant JohnDeerebuildinginneighboringdowntownSidney.
Nearly30yearslater,inJanuary1998,employeesmoved outoftheoriginalSidney headquartersbuildingintoa new120,000-squarefootworld headquarters.
Thetwo-storybuilding, whichislargeenoughtofita footballfieldoneachfloor,
housesofficesfornearly500 employees.Buteventhatfacilitywasquicklyoutgrown. To accommodatetheincreased growthinallareasofthecompany,constructionof anew, state-of-the-artadditionmore thandoublingthesizeofthe worldheadquartersbuilding wascompletedinthesummer of2002.
Thefoundationofthecompanyisitsworld-famouscatalogbusiness.Cabela’s retail divisionoperatespopulardestinationstoresthroughoutthe
country. Asmuchwildlife museumsandeducationcentersas retailstores,Cabela’s showroomsprovide atruly uniqueshoppingexperience. In1985,Cabela’sOutdoor Adventureswasbornandhas grownsteadilysinceto becomethe“World’sForemostHuntingandFishing ConsultingAgency.”
