Invitations Set the Scene
SELECTING A WEDDING INVITATION HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER...BUT ALSO MORE CHALLENGING! ANYTHING GOES THESE DAYS, FROM ETCHING ON REAL WOOD TO GOLD-INFUSED GLITTER BOMBS. BUT WITH SO MANY ALTERNATIVES, HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT DESIGN AND WORDING FOR THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE?
Y
our invitation should set the tone for your wedding, reflecting its theme and colors as well as your own personality. If you are at the invitation stage of your wedding plans, most likely you have already made significant decisions such as the date, time, place and theme of your special day. Now all you have to do is choose how the invitation will reflect those choices. Although your parents may encourage you to stick with a traditional white or cream formal invitation and your grandmother might not enjoy a glitter spray upon opening the envelope, remember the invitation is your guests’ first preview of your wedding day.
6
Just as an invitation to a destination wedding on the beach should be reflected in a simple casual design, a formal invitation implies that your guests should not wear jeans and a t-shirt. Contemporary invitation trends are diverse. There are so many options from DIY designs to reviewing books of samples at a wedding supply business. The current trend is to make your invitation “something unique, something special and something that delivers a message about the bride and groom.” And don’t forget about the envelope liners. More and more couples are using the inner layer of their invitation as a place to add graphics and/or messages or to emphasize the wedding’s color theme. If you can’t decide between formal and fun, compromise by making the liner memorable. A metallic foil, a floralpatterned print or a map can provide that extra personal touch. No matter what size, shape, color or design elements you select for your invitation, make this rule your guiding principal: proof your message, proof it again and again, and ask someone else to proof it for you.
Popular trends include:
• Anything in gold – ink, glitter or foil • Wooden or leather invitations • Lace designs, usually in a laser cut format • The chalkboard effect, dark background with light lettering • Hand-lettering • Mixed graphics • Bold colors, including the envelopes • A pocket/folder style– great for destination weddings • Monograms • 3-D elements such as ribbons, feathers, or charms

Bouquets TO MATCH YOUR WEDDING STYLE
Bri Johnson Photography©
STATEMENT Nothing says love more than roses. The classic round shape of this bouquet is sophisticated with its flowers tightly bound. This bouquet says glamorous, especially with the look of stunning flowers in colors that make an impact.
YOUR BOUQUETS AND FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS SHOULD TIE INTO YOUR WEDDING STYLE. ALTHOUGH MOST PEOPLE CHOOSE FLOWERS BASED ON COLOR, CERTAIN BOUQUETS REFLECT YOUR STYLE. WHEN TRYING TO CONVEY STYLE THROUGH FLOWERS, GIVE THOUGHT TO THEIR CHARACTERISTICS: IS THE TEXTURE SOFT AND DELICATE, OR EDGY AND BOLD? IS THE COLORING ROMANTIC AND PALE, OR VIVID AND LIVELY? WILL THEY MAKE ARRANGEMENTS LUSH AND FLOWING, OR LIGHTER AND MORE PLAYFUL? 8
Say “I do” to
NOSEGAY Nosegay bouquets are smaller and tighter than statement bouquets with nothing sticking out of their perfect circles. They are romantic, yet inspire a vintage feel. For winter wonderland weddings, Calla Lilies are a popular choice, followed by avalanche roses, delphiniums and hydrangeas. CASCADE Cascading bouquets are versatile, chic and elegant. With its trailing look, the cascade adds color, texture, drama and a sense of occasion to your wedding day. Traditional waterfall bouquets can bring up a more formal vibe, whereas voluminous cascade arrangements are stylish, elegant and flattering. By blending your individual mix of roses, hydrangeas, carnations, orchids and calla
lilies, cascades offer beautiful flowers in white, ivory, pale blush pink, champagne and cream. CLASSIC The classic style bouquet of loose hand tied flowers with exposed stems reflects a relaxed, casual style that is great for outdoor weddings, whether on the beach or in a rustic setting. The aim is a natural, fresh look that incorporates color. Flowers that work well with the classic look include wax flower, veronica, eryngium and garden roses. This style of bouquet is about celebration and usually showcases bold shapes in upbeat, punchy colors such as bright pink, blue, orange, purple, yellow and green. This wedding style celebrates individuality and creativity so the possibilities are endless.

g n i s o o Ch the Right Light
BEFORE YOU PLAN THE LIGHTING FOR YOUR WEDDING, REALIZE NO TWO WEDDINGS ARE ALIKE. SOME PEOPLE CHOOSE TO HAVE MORE SUBTLE LIGHTING WHILE OTHERS CHOOSE A MORE FLAMBOYANT STYLE. IF YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH A LIGHTING DESIGNER, MAKE SURE HE UNDERSTANDS YOUR VISION.
W
hy do you need a professional lighting designer? For the same reason you need a professional florist, photographer or wedding planner. A professional will conduct a site survey of the venue, listen to what décor you have already planned, go over the best treatments for the space and make sure you have enough electrical capacity to create your vision. When your vision becomes a plan, your lighting designer will ensure that it includes all the dimmers, controllers, and programs you need to transition moods over the course of the evening. He will also work with your photographer, florist, and planner to be sure you have the best lighting for each of the evening’s activities. Whether your vision is to have a formal wedding or a festive one, an indoor evening wedding with soft candle glow or an outdoor one with
10
globe lights, string lights, or lanterns, the right lighting will add dimension to the room and make the room visually interesting for your guests.
HERE ARE OPTIONS TO THINK ABOUT: Color Wash - To color wash a room is to bathe it in color. Colored lighting that is coordinated with the wedding’s overall color palette can turn a plain venue into a beautiful one. Color washes can either bring attention to a specific area, like the dance floor, or separate a section of the room, such as the dining area. When choosing a color, pick a more flattering one such as a soft rose light, amber or magenta. Outdoor Lighting - Outdoor receptions break away from more traditional lighting methods. The most popular outdoor light source is paper
lanterns. Lanterns create an atmosphere that can be festive and playful, or romantic and tranquil. If you have a courtyard, use globe lights, lanterns or glass orbs filled with candles. The goal is to provide just enough light without making your lighting the focal point. Uplighting - Uplighting places lights on the ground, aimed to project light off the wall or at a particular object. Uplighting can highlight architectural features, outline the perimeter of the space or project a monogram or phrase on the ceiling or walls. Uplighting is the most dramatic and popular lighting element in weddings and the most cost effective. Whether you hire a professional lighting designer or have your own lighting plan, your design should wow your guests, highlight and accentuate your space and decor, and guide your guests’ eyes exactly where you want them to go.

THE FIRST CHAPTERS OF YOUR LOVE STORY HAVE BEEN WRITTEN— THE “WHERE YOU MET” AND “HOW YOU GOT ENGAGED” ARE A SCRIPT UNIQUE TO YOUR RELATIONSHIP NOW, WHAT SPACE WILL PLAY THE SETTING IN YOUR STORYBOOK WEDDING? FROM A LAVISH OPERA HOUSE TO AN IDYLLIC RANCH, HERE’S SIX IDEAL PLACES WHERE YOU CAN TIE THE KNOT IN COLORADO. DICKENS OPERA HOUSE IN LONGMONT Here, your wedding takes the main stage. A backstory: This Longmont landmark was built in 1881 by William Henry Dickens, a relative of famous author Charles Dickens. In 2010, a renovation gave the space a modernday update, while still preserving its 19th century charm. The opera house has room for 300 guests, plus an expansive dance floor and built-in bar and other amenities. Plus, you can lock lips under a chandelier for some lovely wedding photos. The opera house is located above The Dickens Tavern, which has more than 25 years of culinary experience and can cater your wedding. (dickensoperahouse.com)
BROOKSIDE GARDENS IN BERTHOUD Picture this: The bride makes a grand entrance from the balcony, descending into a beautiful garden, complete with a waterfall, brook and an array of gorgeous flowers. In a word, this venue is stunning. The gardens are a beautiful backdrop for wedding photos, with the mountains lending a nice touch, too. Another great perk? The bride and groom can stay in a cottage suite the night of the wedding. Also, a fullservice Aveda Spa & Salon is on-site. (brooksidegardens.com) SYLVAN DALE GUEST RANCH IN LOVELAND Just like you and your soon-to-bespouse, the scenic Rocky Mountains and the Big Thompson River make for a great couple. You’ll get both mountains and the river at this idyllic venue. The wedding team will seamlessly orchestrate your rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception. Also, the ranch sources fresh ingredients from local producers to present delicious and fresh meals to serve your guests, as well as offering a wide variety of microbrews and wines. (sylvandale.com)
UNION COLONY CIVIC CENTER IN GREELEY Throughout the year, the civic center in the heart of downtown Greeley stages concerts, comedy shows, the orchestra and plays. But your wedding can be the main act! Among the rental spaces available are the Monfort Concert Hall and the Hensel Phelps Theater, making this venue ideal if you’re hosting a big wedding or a smaller gathering. The civic center is owned and operated by the City of Greeley, and you can find some competitive rental rates for your wedding. (ucstars.com) THE STUDIO (BOULDER) IN BOULDER Looking for a hip spot to host your wedding? By day, the Studio (Boulder) is buzzing with the creativity of entrepreneurs and artists who use it as a workspace. By night, this cool, industrial-chic venue plays party host to events. It was designed by renowned artist Jen Lewin, who made use of high-end finishes, natural light and reclaimed materials for a space that’s both rustic and modern. A media lounge inside a remodeled vintage airstream trailer can stream slideshows (hello, cute childhood photos of the bride and groom!) Open up a glass garage and you’re greeted by bistrostyle seating. (thestudioboulder.com) LARIMER COUNTY NATURAL RESOURCES IN LARIMER COUNTY Have your favorite dates been the ones that include hiking, biking or exploring Colorado’s great outdoor playground? Good news: Larimer County offers some great outdoor rental spaces that can incorporate your love of the outdoors into your wedding. You’ve got several scenic options to choose from, with reservable pavilions available at spots like Carter Lake South Shore, Flatiron Reservoir, Hermit Park Open Space, Horsetooth Reservoir South Bay and Lions Open Space. WHY NOT ADD A SPARK OF BRILLIANCE TO YOUR TABLE WITH A METALLIC CENTERPIECE? THE HOTTEST TREND IS A TOUCH OF GOLD, SILVER, COPPER OR OTHER METALLIC COLORS IN SHINY, MATTE OR GLITTER PAIRED WITH A NEUTRAL BASE. USING JUST A POP OF METALLIC WILL MAKE YOUR RECEPTION DÉCOR STAND OUT WITHOUT OVERWHELMING IT AND WILL ALSO CREATE A SETTING THAT HAS A TIMELESS, ELEGANT FEEL.

ADD METALLIC SHINE TO YOUR DECOR
HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS TO GET YOU STARTED: LINENS Dress your tables with runners that incorporate metallic threads or a metallic design. Glittery or sequined cloth will also look great. The perfect runner will pull your tablescape together and set off any other metals that you use in the centerpiece. CANDLES Candlelight brings a romantic glow to everything. Place metallic colored or votive candles in crystal holders or let metal candle holders shine. Polished silver is always in style but also consider vintage gold, mercury glass or almost anything in burnished metals that will match your color scheme. Depending on your theme, you can also add lanterns, mason jars, unique bottles, or metal bowls.
Bri Johnson Photography©
FLOWERS Floral stands, bowls and vases come in a variety of metallic sheens. Metallic accents such as painted feathers or metallic florals or clusters of berries can be added with wire. Painted or glittered fruit can also be stacked in bowls to jazz up your table. ACCESSORIES The sky’s the limit when it comes to accessories. Place cards can be written in metallic ink or placed in gold or silver frames. Three-dimensional glittered table numbers can easily be incorporated into the tablescape. Gilded birds, statues, seashells, ornaments or a token that has special meaning for the bride and groom can be placed among the flowers and candles for a whimsical touch that will make your guests smile.

Food for the Mood of a Colorado Wedding BY JULIE KAILUS
COLORADO IS ONE UNCONVENTIONAL PLACE TO GET MARRIED. SO, TOO, IS THE CREATIVE, CAUSAL WEDDING FOOD TRENDING IN OUR STATE. HERE’S THE INSIDE SCOOP—COURTESY OF CATERER GRANT BUCHANAN FROM LONGMONT’S GB CULINARY CONCEPTS—FOR SPICING UP ANY RECEPTION. FAMILY-STYLE SERVICE By far the caterer’s most requested type of service, “family style” is great because it allows guests to pass platters while talking about the food in a more casual environment, but still makes for a lovely presentation and quick service. Plus couples will see savings from the lighter staffing required. STATIONED COCKTAIL HOUR In keeping with the trend toward casual, multi-level hors d’oeurvre stations are also a creative way to showcase Colorado cuisine. For example GB pickles, preserves and smokes its own locally grown items; so stations could include handmade sausages, local cheeses, pickles, plus breads and spreads, just to name a few. SOUP SHOOTERS Soup shooters have become hugely popular during Colorado’s cooler evening weddings. With warming, flavorful soups served in clear shot glasses, guests can see the potage and garnish, allowing the colors of farm vegetables to shine, which makes for some nice eye candy. And cleanup doesn’t get any easier. LATE-NIGHT SNACKS When formal dinner is over, here comes the fun. Since Colorado is such a melting pot, couples are using late-night snacks to showcase some of their favorite hometown foods, but with a Colorado spin. Think “street style” or food-truck foods like chicken and waffles skewers with house-made hot sauce, Korean barbeque tostadas, and mini lamb and waffle French fry poutines. MINI DESSERT STATIONS More and more couples are trading a huge wedding cake for a more practical, diverse dessert concept. One GB dessert display that always wows guests features a variety of selections, such as layered custards, cupcakes, doughnuts, mini seasonal crumbles and pies. The options are endless. Sweet!

he wedding cake is central to the post-vow reception. Not only does it serve as a focal point for the decorations and theme, it is also vital to the memories and glorious photographs that it inspires. Imagine if you did not have a photo of you and your new spouse cutting that first piece of cake? Without a cake, you would disappoint youngsters, grandmothers and everyone in between who can’t wait to satisfy that sweet tooth. More than just a ritual, cutting the wedding cake is also a signal that the reception is soon to end and the honeymoon is soon to begin. Your guests may not remember the wedding gown that you spent months selecting, but they will remember how delicious – or dry – your wedding cake tasted. Cake specialists suggest that you choose a cake that looks great, reflects you and the theme of your wedding, and tastes delicious. So delicious that your guests will
want to take an “extra” piece or two home with them. By now, you have probably heard that anything goes in wedding planning. That definitely applies to cake selection. As with your wedding dress, you can’t go wrong with the customary white cake decorated with accent colors, fresh flowers, or traditional bride and groom cake toppers. But if you’re looking to wow your guests with something unique, consider trying unusual color combinations or working with a designer to recreate a life moment. Some wedding cakes depict a scene from the happy couple’s first movie date or illustrate their favorite song. Before you start the design and tasting process, familiarize yourself with different cake styles and the current trends. A birch cake is made to look like a birch tree with woodgrain textures. Chandelier cakes utilize an upside down format with the largest tier of cake at the top. Confetti cakes feature edible, colored confetti on, around and inside the cake.
CURRENT TRENDS COMBINE SIMPLE AND CONTEMPORARY ELEMENTS:
BUTTERCREAM CAKES – This all time favorite is back in style thanks to new techniques, which allow for texture, patterns and colors in buttercream for a relaxed cake design.
SUGAR FLOWERS – Whether fashioned to include one statement flower or various flowers, buds, leaves or berries, these can be made in any color, shape or size.
HAND-PAINTED CAKES - Varieties of this cake include handpainted floral designs matching the theme and color scheme of the wedding. If you want something unique and artistic, have a memorable scene painted on the cake.
EDIBLE LACE – A bride can choose to incorporate fabric and lace patterns reflecting her dress. RUFFLES AND FRILLS – These edible additions add texture and interest while offering a unique elegance.
CAKE TRIOS – A set of three cakes provide options for size, color and shape, as well as the opportunity to offer a traditional cake along with a gluten-free or vegan alternative.
METALLICS – For a more regal look, add gold or silver leaves, a golden sheen, or edible sequins.
CHALKBOARD CAKES – This trendy design give the couple a platform to highlight their personal vows or message.

Bridesmaid Dresses
HE TRADITION OF MATCHING BRIDESMAID DRESSES CAN BE TRACED BACK TO ROMAN TIMES. THE MAIDS DRESSED LIKE THE BRIDE TO CONFUSE EVIL SPIRITS AND BRING LUCK TO THE MARRIAGE. TODAY THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPTIONS FOR YOUR MAIDS TO MATCH IN COLOR OR STYLE WHILE MAINTAINING THEIR OWN INDIVIDUALITY.
WRAPS - The ever-so-versatile, ever-sochic convertible dress is always a favorite. The most popular convertible is the wrap, because it comes in many styles to flatter all sizes and body types. It is the perfect choice if you want your bridesmaids to look cohesive and stylish. Dresses and convertible skirt panels are available in tea length, knee-length, or full length. For an alternative to the convertible dress, try having your bridesmaids wear matching skirts with different blouses. From tulle skirts to floor length, you can find the perfect style skirt for your wedding and allow your bridesmaids to add their own style with varied necklines.
20
REVERSIBLE DRESSES - Trending now are reversible dresses that women can wear again and again. If you are looking for a formal wedding but also could use a sassy little black dress, the convertible style provides you with 2 dresses for the price of one. With over 60 colors to choose from, reversible dresses are converted in two easy steps. First, button loops at the inside hem to the waistband buttons. Second, flip dress to change from color 1 to color 2. RENTALS - It is hard to find a bridesmaid dress that all of your bridesmaids will love. Luckily a few dress rental websites have expanded the choices for bridal-party wear. They have an extensive selection in every color and the cost is significantly cheaper than purchasing a designer dress. The process is simple: (1) The bride and bridal party book their selections (typically for a 4-8 day rental period), (2) the dresses are received and worn, and (3) the dresses are returned in their pre-paid envelopes — dry cleaning included.

wedding, your shoes should be darker than your suit. Tan wingtips can work for an outdoor celebration as well as a country club wedding. Remember your tie can also make a bold statement.
Semi-Formal Weddings - When wearing a light colored suit to a summer
Casual Destination Weddings - Destination weddings tend to be casual
and often held on a beach. At a beach wedding, it is appropriate to wear sandals or tennis shoes. MATCHING SHOES TO SUIT COLOR Black - If you’re in a black suit, wear black shoes. Patent-leather dress shoes, because of
their sophisticated glossy finish, are a handsome favorite for grooms and groomsmen. Oxford shoes are a great value because you can wear them for a fancy wedding as well as an important business meeting. Navy - You can wear navy, black or burgundy shoes with a navy suit. If you are going to wear brown shoes, make sure they are a darker shade. Gray - Whether you are wearing light gray or charcoal, blue or black shoes will work. In a less formal setting, you can get away with a dark brown shoe. Don’t be afraid to explore your options beyond leather.
PICKING THE PERFECT WEDDING RING BY L.L. CHARLES
Congratulations! You have found that Special Someone, and now it is time to pick out a wedding ring. For most of us, this is a new experience, so you want to start with a basic understanding of how to choose your perfect wedding ring. Like most major investments, this is a matter of personal tastes, lifestyle and budget. First and foremost, you want to work with a trusted jeweler. “We tell couples to take their time when choosing their ring,” says a spokesperson for Ron R Fine Jewelry in Longmont. “You want to pick a ring that reflects your personality. There are many popular styles today, from traditional settings to modern.” And while it’s possible to buy a quality diamond online, nothing beats seeing the stone in person and having
a jeweler explain the fine points of cut, clarity, color and carat (often called the “Four C’s of Diamond Quality” by the Gemological Institute of America). CHOOSING THE STONE Diamonds are by far the preferred wedding ring gemstone, followed by sapphires. These are two of the hardest gemstones and can be expected to last “forever.” Diamonds are typically cut in 10 standard shapes, including round, pear shaped, heart, oval and radiant. GOLD, SILVER OR PLATINUM? The choice of metal for the wedding band is based on personal preference and of course, your budget. Gold can add a yellowish hue to a diamond, which may be undesirable if
you are investing in a more expensive color grade of diamond. White gold is an alloy that gives the ring a lighter, brighter look. Platinum is more expensive than gold and actually weighs more than other metals. Silver is a popular choice for cost-conscious couples. It is often alloyed with another metal for added durability. PRICE Since we’re talking diamonds here, prices can reach the very high numbers. But there are plenty of choices that fit a typical household budget. “We see average prices for wedding rings ranging from about $1,500 to $2,000,” says our guide at Ron R Fine Jewelry. “But we are also seeing a trend among our Millennial customers towards alternative ‘green’ choices. These may not include a diamond at all, and they are often made with sustainable materials. We even see pieces made in rare woods. So really, it comes down to a matter of your choice and desires.”

WHO SAYS YOUR DRESS HAS TO BE WHITE?
O
f course, the traditional white wedding gown will never go out of style, but the norms of wedding etiquette are changing. Non-traditional apparel has made its way down the aisle; the latest trend is for the bride to wear something that reflects her personality. Big names in wedding fashion have already responded to the independent woman who is looking for a non-traditional wedding dress. Vera Wang, Marchesa, Reem Acra, and Ramona Keveza have all showcased splashes of color on the runway through unexpected accents and accessories. The more romantic color choices include soft pink, mint green and baby blue whereas gold and silver remain popular for that regal look. Other options include scarlet, kelly green and purple. Having trouble deciding on one color? Try combining colors by using lace overlays, appliques, capes, feather boas, or beading. These unique touches offer countless opportunities to add vibrancy to your wedding gown. Diversity of style will give you more options. Just remember, it may look amazing on a high fashion model in a magazine or plain awful on a hanger in the store, but you won’t know for sure how it works on you until you try it. When choosing a non-traditional dress, don’t limit your shopping to bridal salons. Expand your search to consignment shops or the evening gown section of your favorite department store. Use your imagination to transform a basic evening gown into your bridal

gown. With the help of an experienced seamstress, you can add beading and lace or alter a long-sleeved gown into an off the shoulder one. If you are worried about straying too far from traditional, try blending different styles. Start with a simple white gown without a flowing train, full skirt, or plunging neckline and add a touch of sparkle by wearing an elegant pearl, diamond or crystal necklace. You can also highlight a white dress by adding a colorful border to the hemline or edging on the neckline and sleeves. Basic white or ivory can be transformed
with a little bit of color in a sash, belt, appliques and/or beading in accent colors. Another alternative is to choose a two-piece gown with a traditional white skirt and a colorful top or a tinted lace jacket that you can remove for the reception. In addition to color, other trends to consider when selecting your gown include: plunging necklines, daring side slits, feathers and flowing layers of organza and tulle (for that fairy princess look). Whatever you choose, the wedding day is all about the bride.

A TOUCH OF COLOR It’s exciting to add a flash of color to your white dress but, if you want to really stand out, try a touch of black. A chic black evening shoe, black jewelry or a tasteful black beaded barrette will not only look lovely on your special day, it can be worn long after. Designer Claire Pettibone added a black sash and black hat to make this lacy dress a knockout.
QUEEN FOR THE DAY Tiaras are making a comeback but, for that bold statement, try a crown. Royal hair accessories come in silver or gold with every kind of trim imaginable. With or without a veil, they are the crowning touch on a fairy tale ensemble. For a more delicate look, skinny headbands can be worn traditionally or high on the forehead.

Prepare Now to Look Fabulous on the Big Day BY EMMA CASTLEBERRY
It’s never too early to start planning your wedding or preparing yourself for the big day. Besides the wedding dress, there are a variety of services that will help brides get a jump start on wedding day beauty. FACIALS For perfect wedding-day skin, Debbie Stone at Meyers Aesthetic Center recommends starting a photofacial series at least six months in advance. “If [the bride] has discoloration of the skin, like brown spots, a photofacial would help to even out the skin tone,” she says. Photofacials are done in a series of at
least three treatments with a month between each treatment. A single treatment costs $295. Jean McBride, owner of a Rejuvenation Med Spa, says HydraFacials® are a great choice for brides because they remove dead skin cells and leave the face looking brighter. “It’s refreshing, non-irritating, and has immediate results,” she says. $149. NAILS, WAXING AND MASSAGES Allure Nail Bar can help with more than just your wedding day manicure. Waxing services start at $12 and a 20-minute facial costs $45. Massages

are also available to relieve the stress of wedding planning, starting at $60. A PERFECT SMILE A beaming, white smile is your best wedding day accessory. Fox Creek Family Dental offers Zoom! Whitening treatments that can help brides look their best. “After one in-office whitening appointment, the results are immediate,” says René Chavez, office manager at Fox Creek. Whitening packages start at $129. WEDDING NIGHT APPAREL Wedding night apparel is almost as important as the dress. “You can't head off to bed in your favorite tee shirt,” says Barbara Wilson, owner of Christina’s Luxuries in Boulder. “We carry a variety of easy and uncomplicated sleep and loungewear for every bride. Cotton and silk chemises and flirty teddies are favorites for many.” Teddies start at $79.

A Backyard Wedding
DESTINATION WEDDINGS CAN BE DIFFICULT TO PLAN AND EXPENSIVE FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED. WITH JUST A LITTLE CREATIVITY, YOU CAN HAVE THE EXPERIENCE OF A DESTINATION WITHOUT HAVING TO USE YOUR PASSPORT.
RECREATE YOUR HAPPY PLACE: If you are unable to exchange your vows in your favorite exotic locale, pick a venue or decorate a space that brings that destination to mind. If you always wanted to get married in Rome, consider non-traditional locations such as an Italian restaurant, a classic sculpture garden or a building that features beautiful Roman columns. If you are limited to a more traditional space, you could wrap ivy around the columns and use fruit-filled urns as centerpieces. Floral arrangements can also transform any room. Tropical flowers suggest an island theme while masses of oleander, lavender and other bright blooms will bring to mind the South of France. Think of what reminds you of your special place and have fun incorporating those elements into the décor. SET THE MOOD WITH MUSIC: Invite your guests to get into the swing of things by choosing music that matches your locale. Polynesian music will transport your guests to a Hawaiian beach. If you dream of Paris, play some light jazz with accordion music. Whether you go with recorded songs or a band, music will help you set the tone. DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE FOOD: Continue your theme by offering your guests authentic cuisine. If your wedding has a nautical theme, then seafood would be the perfect choice. By offering a variety of Indian curries, you can transport your guests to Jaipur. Or if you dream of Jamaica, bring in jerk chicken and rum punch to make your wedding fun and festive. By offering food other than the traditional, you can make your day unforgettable.

Capturing the Perfect Honeymoon BY JUDY FINMAN
Ask a couple of savvy travel agents to choose the five “hottest” honeymoon destinations, and you get a mix of fun, adventure, and beauty. Mexico and Hawaii are their top two picks. Kina Palmer, Travel Specialist at Travelhound of Berthoud, says, “Mexico is known for its amazing all-inclusive resorts, so brides and grooms love it because it's one-stop shopping and there are no hidden costs for most of the resorts." Kristy Osborn, owner of Travel Leaders in Loveland, chooses Mexico’s Mayan Riviera for its “beautiful beaches, great snorkeling, the Mayan ruins, and swimming in cenotes (underground pools).” Palmer says each Hawaiian island has its own different “personality” and honeymooners have choices like beaches, hiking, and helicopter rides. Osborn
chooses the island of Kauai, which also offers snorkeling and different types of river kayaking. Both named Europe on their list, Osborn specifying Italy – “especially large cities like Rome and Florence, and the Tuscan countryside.” Palmer says, “Europe is for honeymooners on the go. It’s about finding out what the couple enjoys.” Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful beaches, water sports and ecotourism is another island paradise. The region of Punta Cana features nice adults-only resorts and is among the best golf destinations in the world. Mountain biking and hiking are popular on Saint Lucia, an island in the eastern Caribbean. All-inclusive, adultsonly resorts are known for wonderful spas, and some include sailing and hiking.

For your honeymoon photo book, Todd Tieman of Mike’s Camera in Boulder advises: “Use a real camera, not your Smartphone, and take our Travel Class before you go.” A tip: “Take just three to five unique pictures of each event; the first one establishes the place so step back and get the big picture. Then get in closer to the details to create the middle and end shots.”

A Perfect Toast
KEEP IT SHORT, KEEP IT APPROPRIATE, THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK, AND SPEAK FROM THE HEART. FOLLOWING THESE GUIDELINES WILL HAVE YOUR WEDDING GUESTS CLINKING THEIR GLASSES ENTHUSIASTICALLY.
No matter how formal or informal your reception, wedding toasts are as much a part of the celebration as cutting the cake or the first dance. Plan ahead to determine who will make the toast and when. According to The Emily Post Etiquette Institute (yes, the legendary Emily Post’s great-great-granddaughter Anna is the ultimate authority on the right thing to do), the best man traditionally makes the first toast followed by the maid or matron of honor. The bride and groom are not expected to offer a toast to their guests or each other; however some couples use this opportunity to thank their special relatives and friends.
36
WEDDING PLANNERS, ETIQUETTE EXPERTS AND PROFESSIONAL TOASTMASTERS SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING TIPS FOR GREAT TOASTING: ◆ Prepare and practice, especially if you tend to be nervous when speaking in public. ◆ Don’t read the toast unless you are quoting a poem, song lyrics or a traditional cultural saying. ◆ Make it short and
sweet – a maximum of three minutes. ◆ Eliminate sexual innuendos and potentially embarrassing stories although adding a little humor is fine. ◆ Keep the audience thinking happy thoughts – sentimen-
tal sobs ruin makeup. ◆ Look at the guests while speaking, but turn to the bride or groom, or both, when raising the glass. ◆ Come to a simple conclusion, such as “Family and friends, here’s to the bride and groom.”

Wedding Cocktails: Shake Up What You Serve BY DARREN THORNBERRY
SURE, YOU CAN STICK TO THE CLASSICS FOR YOUR COCKTAIL HOUR – BEER, WINE AND A FEW TRIED-AND-TRUE MIXED DRINKS – BUT IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO SHAKE UP WHAT YOU SERVE (AND HOW YOU SERVE IT), CHECK THESE OUT.
Warm Apple Pie
This spice-laden beauty is the quintessential fall/ winter cocktail! INGREDIENTS: • 6 cups apple cider • 4 cinnamon sticks • 6 whole cloves • 8 whole allspice • 1 cup rum • whipped cream and ground cinnamon for garnish DIRECTIONS: Add apple cider, cinnamon sticks, cloves and allspice to a heavy saucepan. Bring to a gently boil, lower heat to simmer and simmer 10 minutes. Strain out spices and stir in rum. Pour into glasses and top with whipped cream and ground cinnamon. Serve immediately.
The French 75
“When considering champagne cocktails, go for something that exudes lighthearted sophistication - the French 75,” says Larry Berreth, social media coordinator at Wyatt's Wet Goods in Longmont. INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz gin, preferably a London Dry style • 1 teaspoon fine sugar • ½ fresh lemon juice • 4-5 oz Brut sparkling wine DIRECTIONS: Shake all the ingredients except the bubbly in a cocktail shaker. Pour into a glass half full of cracked ice. Top with the sparkling wine and garnish with lemon peel.

Wedding Cocktails, continued:
Create a Personalized Signature Cocktail
“A big trend we are seeing lately is people creating one or two signature cocktails for their bar, rather than offering a full selection of cocktails,” says Jennifer DeQuiroz, director of marketing at Hazel's Beverage World. “The biggest way they are personalizing these signature cocktails is by either creating their own, or making slight alterations to an existing cocktail. Many times, to make the cocktail fit into a theme or color scheme, the bride and groom add fruit, garnishes or syrups to match a color or look.” Try these:
Blueberry Mojito
A classic rum-based cocktail with a few frozen blueberries to garnish (also great with strawberries). Strawberry Pink Lemonade
A summer classic with either vodka or gin. Lavender Gin & Tonic
Take a classic Gin & Tonic, substitute the lime for a lemon and add a spring of fresh lavender for a very floral and attractive drink.
Never compromise when asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you
