From well-known rappers, country music and gospel musicians headlining the SuperStars+ Concert series to the PRCA ProRodeo, the Stampede brings all types of fun to Greeley from June 26 to July 6.
Each rodeo features steer wrestling, team roping, mutton bustin,’ bull riding, barrel racing and other rodeo action. Rodeo events will host special promotions, as well.
For First Responders Night on Thursday, June 27, first responders who show their ID receive one free park entry. The first 250 to do so will also receive one free grandstand ticket to that day’s rodeo.
Stampede Out Cancer – Pink Night is Monday, July 1. Every $1 from every full-priced rodeo ticket, along with a portion of Stampede Out Cancer merchandise, will be donated to the North Colorado Medical Center mammography fund.
“We have something for everyone when you come out here,” said Stampede marketing manager Kevin McFarling.
Old Dominion, T.I., Waka Flocka Flame and Cheap Trick highlight the SuperStar+ Concert Series in the Stampede Arena.
Outside the arena, the Civitas Park Music Stage and Corkat
Locals Music Stage will host plenty of acts. Jackson Dean kicks things off Friday, June 28 on the Park Stage. Other Park Stage artists will include Tayler Holder, War Hippies and Josh Meloy.
On the local stage, Gii Astorga will get things going starting Wednesday, June 26. Ben Pu, Mtn. Duo, Aubrey Dale, Carlos Barata and Capture This are other local artists set to bring tunes to the stage.
The Stampede’s special event offerings have grown to include Zumba in the Park, the Hot Rods and HorsePower car show and a cornhole tournament on Saturday, June 29. A craft beer fest is set for Friday, July 5, and a comics, cards, sneakers and collectibles show is Saturday, July, 6. Most special events are free with park admission, but some require additional tickets.
Families and other guests will again get to enjoy classic carnival rides and games for everyone each day of the Stampede at Carnival Americana.
The Kids Korral also returns this year, featuring Wildman Phil, a wildlife comedian who has appeared with his exotic creatures in episodes of Breaking Trail and Coyote’s Backyard on the Discovery Channel. The Korral will also have face painting, a

petting zoo, pedal tractors and more fun for the kids.
Another specialty at the event is the food. McFarling said the Stampede features “top-notch” carnival food that consists of his personal favorite: deep-fried Oreos. Candy bars and pretty much whatever can be deep-fried will be among the offerings as well. One stand this year features food wrapped in bacon. Even bacon wrapped in bacon is on the menu.
To wash all that deep-fried, bacon-y goodness down, there will be plenty of drink stations with lemonade, water or soda drinks to quench your thirst. The beer tent is available for those 21 years and older.

Stampede guests can anticipate improved cellphone service this year, allowing them to post to social media, even during peak hours, without too much delay.
“We have been working with the cell providers to try and boost the signal during the event,” McFarling said.

McFarling reminds all Stampede attendees there will be lines for most stands and entertainment. So along with your favorite Stampede fit, he asks you to bring your patience — and clear bags. The clear bag policy, which the Stampede has enforced in previous years, is now park-wide. McFarling said the policy only applied to the arena until now. He said the change was made to keep up with current policies at major events across the country.
McFarling said there will be a limited number of clear bags that Stampede officials can give to people who forget about the
A few cell towers have been placed in the area, he said, and Allo Fiber and Xfinity will provide free WiFi hotspots throughout the food court and carnival area.
Just days away from opening day, McFarling is excited to see the year-long work he and other Stampede officials put into the event pay off.
“It’s such a great feeling when people start to really get excited about the Stampede and knowing that it’s this close,” he said. “The energy that it creates is just an amazing community experience. That’s what makes what we do, worth it. The community comes together, and they’re ready to come out and enjoy summer, celebrate our independence and see some rodeos, and preserve our Western heritages.”

ANNE DELANEY STAFF REPORTER
The 102nd Greeley Independence Stampede will soon ride into Greeley, bringing one the biggest and best parts of the 12-day festival: rodeo.
The Stampede’s rodeo is considered one of the best in the country, and it’s a stop on the pro circuit — the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
Last year’s purse was more than $500,000 — one of the bigger payouts in the PRCA, according to Greeley Stampede rodeo chairman Colby Craven.
The Stampede’s rodeo events start at 7 p.m. June 26 with the one-day PRCA’s Xtreme Bulls. These are the meanest of the mean bulls against the 50 best riders.
PRCA Pro Rodeo series events start June 27, resume June 29 and run through July 3 with the finals. The action begins at 7 p.m. June 27, 1 p.m. June 29-30 and 7 p.m. July 1-3.
Each PRCA rodeo performance at the Stampede will have the following events: bareback bronc, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, mutton busting, barrel racing and bull riding.
American Bull Fighting, which is not a PRCA event, will be held at 1 p.m. July 4. In American Bull Fighting, the rodeo athletes maneuver around a Mexican fighting bull.

The Mexican Heritage Celebration and Rodeo will be held at 1 p.m. July 6. The event will feature a variety of acts choreographed by Jerry Diaz, a fourth-generation champion charro. The rodeo will include Mexican-style bull riding, bareback riding, trick roping, Mariachi music, side saddle girls and Portuguese-style bullfights.
Tickets for the rodeo events may be purchased at bit.ly/ StampedeRodeo24.
“We’ll get some of the top athletes, past world champions and tops in the standings,” Craven said. “Greeley is a big rodeo, and it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves because there are a lot of rodeos going on (at that time).”
Because of all of the rodeo events happening around the Stampede, that part of the rodeo season is known as “Cowboy Christmas,” Craven said.
Other large PRCA events taking place around the same time are in Reno, Nevada; Cody, Wyoming; St. Paul, Oregon; and Prescott, Arizona.
Almost 1,000 people will compete at the Stampede’s rodeo.
The big night is the final night, July 3. The top 12 contestants in each event compete to determine the winner. They are competing for prize money, a saddle and a belt buckle.
Other rodeo contestants will perform during the day June 25-28 at a time known as slack. The 125 contestants in each slack event didn’t get into the evening performances through a draw, so they begin at 8 a.m. those four days and run through the early afternoon.
Steer wrestling and calf roping slack is June 25-26. Barrel racing slack is June 27, and ladies breakaway roping and team roping slack is June 28.
Terminology and More
Rough stock events are bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. All of the animals that come out of the bucking chutes are known as rough stock. These events are judged. Half of the score in rough stock comes from the animal and half from the rider.
Timed events are based on times. The fastest time wins in steer wrestling, team roping, calf roping, ladies breakaway and barrel racing.
Beutler & Son Rodeo Company has been the primary rodeo livestock contractor since 1982.
Stock contractors Bennie and Rhett Beutler are part of the rodeo personnel team. The rodeo announcer is Will Rasmussen, and on sound is Jill Franzen Loden.
Trent McFarland will be the barrel man and rodeo clown. Bullfighter and cowboy protection are Wacey Munsell, Chuck Swisher and Ryder Rich.
Clear Bags for All
The Stampede this year is continuing to emphasize its clear bag policy. The policy as of this year is in effect throughout the entire park.
All belongings must be in an approved clear bag or a small clutch or wallet no larger than 4.5 x 3 x 6.5 inches. Guests are encouraged to bring only what they need for the day.
Exceptions will be made for medically necessary bags. All bags coming into the park are subject to search.

he rodeo, carnival rides and concerts may be the highlights of the Greeley Stampede, but the food is an attraction of its own for many attendees.
The 102nd Stampede will have an expansive selection of sweet treats, special potato dishes, classic barbecue and
cherished carnival grub for the whole family.
Thirty-five food vendors will set up shop on the Stampede’s grounds. Returning vendors received priority selection and placement for the 2024 event, so if you already have a favorite food vendor at the Stampede, there’s a good chance of finding them again this year.
Along with longtime vendors, attendees can expect to see some newbies on the grounds, including Emergency Mini Treats and Southern Soul.
Emergency Mini Treats, or EMTs, is a family, veteran-owned food truck business out of Frederick that shows its appreciation for first responders. EMTs sell their staple product of mini donuts, along with cotton candy, hot dogs, kettle corn, nachos and more out of an old fire truck. EMTs gives veteran and first responder customers a discount.
Southern Soul, a Fort Collins-based food truck, makes Southern comfort food from scratch using local ingredients. Menu items include hushpuppies, brisket and cajun-styled egg rolls.

Celebrating food vendors
The Stampede team in recent years introduced an awards program to recognize the people behind the food truck windows who work to feed the 250,000 visitors who attend the city’s busiest annual event.
Nana’s Famous BBQ and Grill, which returns this year, won the 2023 Best Bang 4 Your Buck, which recognizes vendors with delicious and budget-friendly options on their menu.
The Chuck Wagon Awards has four categories for the 2024 event: Rookie of the Year, People’s Choice Award, the A+++ Award and the Royal Taste Award.
Rookie of the Year goes to a new vendor who shined at the event with a great menu, popularity and a clean workspace.
For the People’s Taste Award, the public votes for the vendor of their choice between June 26-30.
The A+++ Award goes to a vendor who maintains high standards throughout the event in three areas of satisfaction: their space, their food and meeting deadlines.
The Stampede crews change up the Chuck Wagon Award yearly to bring in something new. This year’s new award, the Royal Taste Award, challenges vendors to create the tastiest dish using the potato to honor the legacy of potato farmers and the original name of the Stampede, “The Spud Rodeo.” Stampede royalty will judge the award on June 30.

The Burroughs to bring their brand of ‘sweaty soul music’
to the Greeley Stampede for the first time
It’s been a long time coming for The Burroughs.
July will mark 11 years for the Greeley-based band. And in that time, they’ve played just about every regional festival, from the now-defunct Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest in Fort Collins to the Greeley Blues Jam and even the Underground Music Showcase in Denver.
But at least one major regional event the band has yet to play remained. One the band will cross off its list July 4, when it closes out the Civitas Park Stage at the Greeley Stampede.
“It’s a serendipitous opportunity that came up,” said Briana Harris, who plays alto saxophone and manages the band. “We’re always excited to play local events for local crowds.”
The Stampede debut — which will be free to attend — comes in the middle of an eventful run for the nine-piece “sweaty soul band.”
Last October, the band’s 2023 album, “Honey Imastar,” was nominated for four Grammys, and “Found My Groove,” a single off the album, was nominated for another.
On May 20, the group released an 18-track live album from a sold-out show Nov. 4 at Washington’s in Fort Collins. And sandwiched in between was a string of California gigs in February.
And after the Stampede, the group has a run of four Colorado shows from Aug. 8-11.
But their busy schedule is nothing new. And neither is the travel.
The Burroughs have taken the stage across states including New York, Louisiana and California, even making a handful of trips to Alaska to play Salmonfest — a yearly festival in Ninilchik.
“We always have a great time when we’re out, whether it’s
regionally or out of state,” Harris said. “It’s great to meet all kinds of new people and even, you know, surprise people in the audience who have never seen us perform.”
And they’ve had the chance to surprise plenty of folks on their way to nearly 33,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, providing direct support for the Steve Miller Band, Greensky Bluegrass and The Motet as well as playing festivals with the likes of Jason Mraz.
But as much time as they’ve spent on the road, they’ve put in even more giving back to the community at home. Since its inception, the group has worked with the Weld Food Bank, Greeley Boys and Girls Clubs and Habitat for Humanity to help raise awareness for the nonprofits.
The group's #BandsGiveBack campaign — in partnership with Greeley-Evans School District 6 — gives local artists the opportunity to pledge money and time toward providing students access to music education. The campaign provides an opportunity for artists to connect with students in not just Greeley, but all around the country.
So, though playing an event like the Greeley Stampede is nothing new to The Burroughs, this one will mean a little extra.
“It’s always really special and fun to do hometown gigs,” Harris said. “Especially something that has been around as long as the Stampede.”
For more information on the Burroughs, including all upcoming show dates and a place to buy merchandise, go to TheBurroughsSoul.com. Information on all performances at the Greeley Stampede, including how to buy tickets, is available at GreeleyStampede.org.

Just like Batman has Robin, the Greeley Stampede mascot
Bucky needed a new friend, a new sidekick, to help spread the love this summer at the Stampede.
Last December, Bucky went to find a new friend at NOCO Humane, 3501 E. 71st St., Loveland, according to Stampede community engagement coordinator Stephanie Johansen. It didn't take long for Bucky to find and adopt a 3-year-old cattle dog, Blue Heeler, who he named Spud. The name pays homage to the Stampede's original name back in 1922, The Greeley Spud Rodeo.
“He’s Bucky's mischievous little sidekick now,” Johansen said.
Bucky was busy with prior Stampede commitments, so he was unable to be interviewed for this story.
Bucky has been the only mascot for the Stampede, and Bucky has expressed to Johansen that it gets lonely out there, she explained. So Bucky came up with the idea to head to NOCO Humane to find a pal who could help him spread all the fun and love during the Stampede.
Since December, Bucky and Spud have become the best of friends, Johansen said. From playing frisbee to running around Island Grove Park, the two have become inseparable. Recently, Bucky and Spud were at a parking lot party at a local grocery store where Spud got a nice new bone.
The duo will meet and greet the community on June 30 at the Stampede for Family Funday Sunday, and they’ll also walk in the Stampede Independence Day Parade on July 4.
“They are the very last to come through and wave and greet people (at the parade),” she said.
Spud is full of energy, as well as cuddles and puppy kisses, Johansen said. Bucky has had his hands full with his new friend, but he loves the company Spud brings. Speaking for Bucky, Johansen said he’s happy to have Spud around and he’s ready to show his friend what the Stampede is all about.
“He’s excited to get him out to the public and have everybody meet Spud and just love him as much as Bucky loves him,” she said.

s we prepare for the beloved 102nd Greeley Stampede, the fashion-conscious among us must ponder one question: “What am I going to wear?”
Local businesses in Weld County have the solution for all Western needs from a cute cowgirl outfit to a new saddle for the rodeo.
Wildcard Western Boutique
Kelsey Bascom, a local country singer with kids in the rodeo, started the Wildcard Western Boutique in Greeley due to her passion for Western fashion.
Bascom, who wears her boutique’s attire at her perfor-
mances, offers unique, high-quality clothing for women, men and children.
For women looking to dress to impress for the Stampede, the boutique has a great selection of fringe, flair, sequin and rhinestones on jeans, shirts, bodysuits, dresses and boots.
Bascom’s boutique stands out because it makes its customers stand out. She doesn’t restock her limited items — once it’s gone, it’s gone — so customers can walk away with a unique product.
“You're not going to run into somebody that has all the same outfits,” she said.
Customers can ship products to their homes or do a local pickup. To shop, go to wildcardwesternboutique. com/collections.
Saddle Up Western Saddle and Tack Shop
A family-owned business at 1003 Ash St. in Gilcrest, Saddle Up started as a retirement hobby for owner Dana Golden’s father. The store has since turned into one of the biggest saddle shops in the Western industry, according to Lynnsy Diekman, the store manager and social media manager.
The Saddle Up team prides itself on having one of the largest variety of products compared to chains or large retail stores. The store has more than 250 new and used Western saddles and a large selection of tack, including equipment such as bits, stirrups, spurs and more — becoming the

go-to stop for rodeo contestants during the Stampede.
The store also offers a consignment section of Western clothing, hats, jewelry, bags, key chains and even home decor to get into the spirit of the Stampede. The apparel pickings include Western riding clothes and equestrian casual clothes.
“There’s definitely something for everyone in here,” Diekman said.
Amid a decline in local tack shop businesses due to online competitors and larger chains, Saddle Up prioritizes creating an at-home atmosphere and taking an old-fashioned approach to make customers feel like family, not just a sale walking through the door.
To view or shop for products, go to saddleupcolorado.net.
Whiteside’s Boots
Whiteside’s Boots, a local, family-owned business specializing in Western attire and workwear, has operated in northern Colorado since 1985 when its Loveland location opened, according to William Whiteside, one of the owners. The Whitesides have since opened two more locations in Brighton and Greeley.
Whiteside’s “strong” Western wear selection from straw hats to name-brand jeans includes options for the whole family. Well-known and well-liked Western brands at the local store include Wrangler, Ariat, Kimes Ranch and more.
Customers could walk out of Whiteside’s with a full outfit for the Stampede from head to toe.
Whiteside said the store tends to see an uptick in Western wear purchases around the Greeley Stampede season because people want to purchase a good-quality pair of boots or jeans for the rodeo.
“We actually have a bigger selection, we run slimmer margins and we have better pricing than most of our competitors,” he said. “We’re small so we’re able to find styles and brands that really work within our community.”
To shop at one of the three locations online, go to whitesidesboots.com.
