Scott Brasington’s GreenPoint Roofing: Leading with Family Values and Community Impact in Longmont

When Longmont’s Scott Brasington, owner of GreenPoint Roofing, decided to take the leap and open his own family business, it’s possible even he didn’t know how literal he was being

Since opening back in 2012, Brasington put a focus on providing a product he and his employees could be proud of, while also creating a company full of reliable people.

Now, Brasington’s GreenPoint Roofing has grown to about 25 core employees and a number of roofing crews

“In that group, we have a couple that met here at GPR and now have

two beautiful children,” Brasington said “We have a brother/sister, a father/son and we have two married couples So, we really are a family!”

With that tight-knit group of employees comes a level of customer service and integrity that

Brasington thinks rivals anyone in the business

“Overall, construction and roofing doesn’t always have a shining reputation,” Brasington said “I wanted to create a place that myself and the employees

could be proud of – something they could have a real positive impact on ”

But one thing that stands out about GreenPoint is not just its business, it’s the impact of the company, its owners and its employees have made on the community In fact, GreenPoint is so entrenched in Longmont that it was chosen as the Longmont Chamber 2022 Business of the Year.

“Community involvement and giving back is very important to me,” Brasington said “I’m incredibly blessed to be healthy and have experienced success within our business We have forged a culture that encourages community involvement ”

One of the more unique programs GreenPoint offers is its annual Veterans Day roof donation

“This particular event is my favorite,” Brasington said “Each year on Veterans Day, we donate a full roof replacement for a Military Veteran in need of a new roof – one that doesn’t have the

financial means to afford it. We are grateful for the military veterans in our community who have made so many sacrifices for this great country ”

Past beneficiaries have included two Vietnam vets, an Afghanistan vet, a World War II vet and a husband-and-wife Marine vet couple

“Our first female recipient was a 40-plus-year veteran of the Air Force,” Brasington said

While the vet program is impressive, it just scratches the surface of how GreenPoint helps out in and around Longmont

GreenPoint manager Allie Davies has run the annual Toys for Tots toy drive for nine years, including collecting toys and even offering to pick up toys from customers’ homes.

“The entire Longmont community has made this a huge success,” Brasington said Accounting Manager Andrew

Snyder, meanwhile, is heading into his fourth year of organizing a blood drive for the Children’s Hospital of Colorado The hospital parks its mobile unit at the GreenPoint office while employees, neighbors and friends donate blood.

Tyler Urbania, GreenPoint’s Sales Manager, gathers a group of employees to keep a stretch of Hwy 119 looking clean and tidy

And we’re still not close to the complete list GreenPoint is also involved in helping out Habitat for Humanity, supporting youth sports through sponsorships, serving as a primary sponsor of the Kiwanis Longmont Fourth of July fireworks show, organizing an event to celebrate Marshall Fire First Responders the list rolls on

While GreenPoint has an impressive focus on community events, it also strives to keep up with the latest and best trends when it comes to putting a solid roof over your head

“We offer and install all types of roofing, including shingles, metal, stone-coated steel and flat roofing membranes,” Brasington said. “One notable type of shingle we install is the Malarkey brand These shingles are made with upcycled materials including rubber tires and milk jugs

“The shingles are also rubber modified, which gives them a Class IV Impact Resistance Rating The fact that the system is made with recycled materials and is impact resistant is very appealing to homeowners.”

Asked about any unique projects he’s been involved with, Brasington recalled a huge church more than 100 years old that had been renovated into luxury condos

“But my favorite projects are the roof donations,” Brasington said “Seeing the joy of someone that has been given a lift up with a donated roof truly warms my heart ”

Efficient, Sustainable Beauty

With right planning, green-built homes can be sustainable, beautiful and within budget

Not long ago, those seeking a beautiful, efficient, sustainable and budget-friendly home had to abandon at least

one of these priorities But today, thanks to technological advances in green design and construction, homeowners can hang onto their values, especially when opting for a custom home with designer and builder input from the start Scott Rodwin, firm principal

Mama Mead’s

of Rodwin Architecture in Boulder, partners with Brandon David, president of Skycastle Construction, to craft homes that land on the “optimal balance point” of beauty, sustainability, functionality and budget He explained, “Part of the secret

Farmhouse, a home by Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Construction (Photo courtesy: Rodwin Architecture)
Introducing the NEW

sauce of the design-build methodology is that it allows us to have conversations between the architecture and construction sides early in the process ” This enables the Rodwin and Skycastle team to incorporate sophisticated sustainable features into a build that “do not impinge on the beauty or functionality of the house,” he said.

Rodwin and David’s holistic approach is on display in one of their recent homes, dubbed the Farmhouse To maximize both comfort and efficiency, the home is blanketed in a double wall exterior envelope of insulation “The details are what make this work,” said David. Careful attention to insulation and framing creates indoor thermal comfort while reducing energy loss and reducing energy bills An Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) conveys fresh, clean air into the home; ERVs, a lifesaver for those with sensitivities to air pollution, are in demand in Colorado as smoke from wildfires increasingly impacts air quality

Another way to maximize comfort and efficiency while limiting costs is to use passive solar design The Farmhouse is oriented to protect the home from undesired heat gain in the summer and to accept solar radiation in the winter Solar panels, moreover, perform optimally on a roof intentionally designed to capture solar energy A LEED Platinum certified build, the Farmhouse is regenerative, producing more energy than it

consumes

The most significant leap for many homeowners wanting a green build is moving to “electric everything,” said David “Not only is everybody doing solar,” he continued, “but there’s a lot of interest in battery backups and, of course, car chargers and induction stoves ” One of the most costeffective electric options is an air source electric heat pump These are long-lasting and 250 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace and air conditioning system Rebates from Xcel Energy combined with tax credits from Colorado and the U.S. government have made air source electric heat

pumps even more affordable

“There is a lot of new technology we can use to make our homes more sustainable, but this is where we start,” Rodwin said. “Financially, this makes a lot of sense ”

A home design and building innovation that was brought to public consciousness by the Marshall Fire is resiliency. Once a term used mostly in reference to water conservation, resiliency intersects with sustainability to refer to a home that responds to its environment, such as a house with ignition-resistant exterior materials Homes designed for the Colorado climate – from the state’s strong sunlight, lack of water and highly expansive soil to risks from fire, hail and wind – are intrinsically sustainable and resilient, noted Rodwin

While every Rodwin and Skycastle home is built green, styles can vary tremendously “Sustainability can look like anything, from true modern to very traditional,” Rodwin said David added that clients operating within a set budget appreciate that a design-build model can accurately predict and control costs from the beginning of the project. He said, “We can help a client to have all the tools that they need to make the decisions about where and how they want to spend their money ”

For the past five years, homeowners favored hardsurface flooring throughout their homes but in 2024, they’re expected to want something a little cozier

“The last couple of months I’ve

been meeting customers who are saying they don’t like the coldness of hard surface flooring and want something more comfortable and soft,” said Aidan Rosenau, marketing manager for Carpet Masters of Colorado in Longmont “I predict that over the next several years, we will see many people go back to having more carpet in their homes ”

Carpet Masters of Colorado, founded in 1988, sells a variety of premier floor coverings for residential and commercial customers, including carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl tile, luxury vinyl plank, vinyl composite tile, sheet vinyl and laminate

Initially, Carpet Masters saw customers choose hard surface

flooring over carpet, going for materials like LVP, an affordable option that has the appearance of hardwood and is waterproof and scratch-resistant. But then they found that hard surfaces have some disadvantages.

“It can be very uncomfortable to stand and walk on a hard surface all day, especially for those who suffer from existing foot issues or those who stand and walk a lot at work,” Rosenau said “Carpet has some advantages over LVP Carpet offers warmth and comfort that tile, LVP and hardwood can’t provide ”

Carpet holds in heat and absorbs sound better than hard surfaces, which reflect sound and can cause a space to be louder and have more echoes Carpet is ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and stairways, but not in bathrooms, kitchens and dining rooms, where hard surfaces are a better option since they can be easily cleaned and are able to recover from spills and heavy dirt

When selecting carpet,

customers are trending toward warm tones in 2024, the same as 2023, Rosenau said

They are opting for browns, beiges and tans over grays, especially cool, blue-toned grays, as well as whites, which are hard to keep clean They’re also going for large, bold patterns and fun colors for a room or places like stairs to add a design element, a trend Rosenau saw start about three years ago They might pick carpet, a runner or stair treads, which help decrease the slipperiness of the stairs and show off the hard surface, while adding a style element, she said

“The stairs are a really good place to add a pop of color and pattern and show off a nice staircase,” Rosenau said “It adds a fun element to the design ”

Popular for stairs is blue and geometric patterns, like chevron or zigzag, diamonds, linear and squares The patterns can come from colors or how the carpet is woven so that the loops are at

different heights to create texture

Another trend is opting for speckled carpet over solid colors and sheered carpet, a soft surface that’s uniform in height and looks similar to a hard surface with its clean, flat lines

“It’s just more forgiving to have speckled carpet with multiple colors rather than one flat, solid color,” Rosenau said “It helps hide stains or dirt that might happen

over time ” Aleana Kincaid, office manager at Aesthetic Flooring & Hard Surfaces, Inc in Longmont, finds that residential customers are opting for carpet in their bedrooms and LVP in the rest of their homes

The company, in business for about 20 years, sells residential and commercial flooring, including carpet, LVP, hardwood, tile and concrete polishing and epoxy

“I haven’t noticed carpet making

a huge comeback,” Kincaid said “Really, it’s more LVP”

When customers opt for carpet, they are selecting it for the softer feel and the warmth it adds to a home, since hard surfaces are cooler to the touch, Kincaid said They tend to select two-tone carpet designs, favoring neutrals, tans and browns with black accents instead of grays, she said

“Otherwise, a hard surface is easier to clean It’s going to last longer usually,” Kincaid said “It tends to hold up better than carpet (due to) stains, that kind of thing It’s easier to maintain.”

Rosenau recommends before installing carpet, making sure the color selection is desirable The color of the entire carpet will look a little lighter than the swatch, so it’s best to select something one shade lighter, she said.

“It’s sort of a trick of the eye The smaller it is, the darker it looks,” Rosenau said

Another thing to consider is the paint color of a room and making

sure the undertones, such as a green or pink, match that of the carpet

“Look at samples in different times of the day,” Rosenau said “The color will look different depending on how the sunlight hits it Make sure you love the color ”

Natural beauty meets home comfort with indoor-outdoor living design

From breathtaking mountain vistas to lush flora and serene waters, nature speaks to the soul And while we can all easily appreciate the power and the beauty of the outdoors, data increasingly backs what we intuitively know: nature heals as much as it inspires. In fact, the World Health Organization

recently released a report, “Green and Blue Spaces in Mental Health”, that highlights how time in nature, including within urban areas, improves mood, mindset and mental health, as well as promotes physical activity and overall well-being

All of this is to say, getting out in nature is important–but why stop there? Current home trends bring the outdoors in – and the indoors out – seamlessly blending the comforts of indoor living

with the earth’s beckoning beauty through clever, stunning design. The indoor-outdoor living concept builds a bridge between home and the natural world, creating multifunctional spaces where families can work, play and relax with the best of both

What can indoor-outdoor living look like for you? We reached out to local experts with ideas for achieving the indoor-outdoor living space of your dreams

Natural light can lift the atmosphere indoors while providing greater connection to the outdoors (Photo: Budget Home Supply)

Let there be light

Natural light enhances more than just living spaces It’s a peaceful, easy mood booster, too, linked to wellbeing Natural light can lift the atmosphere indoors while providing greater connection to the outdoors The options are endless, and the simplest changes can make a big impact

“We know that when customers come in for new windows that they aren’t only looking for quality but also size,” says Vernetta Angelo, Marketing Director for Budget Home Supply “Why not go bigger? Let the light in!” More natural light can transform a space, Angelo says, adding that colors become more vibrant and the room automatically feels larger

When planning for windows, be sure to pay some attention to doors as well These too can offer opportunities to bring in the light Bi-folding and retractable screen doors can vastly open up more natural light, for instance

Expand your living space with outdoor kitchens, decks and patios

“Colorado offers a lot of sunny days,” says Angelo. “A great way to take advantage is by sitting on your own beautiful deck, with the conveniences of an outdoor kitchen

Not only do decks and patios offer a functional space for entertaining and relaxing, they increase the monetary value of your home, Angelo says, lending an added, welcoming aesthetic Pergolas and other covering options can even further blur the lines between interior spaces and the exterior environment, creating greater all-weather space to work, play, and chill.

Enhance your expanding space even further through outdoor cooking possibilities. Today, stellar options abound beyond standard grilling, from outdoor bar areas to fully functional kitchens Depending on what fits your space

and style, you can equip with permanent or portable features

“We like to think of outdoor kitchens as an extension of your indoor space,” says Angelo, noting that outdoor kitchens are one of Budget Home Supply’s specialties “It’s important to think about how you will be using the space Is it for personal cooking, or do you want the ultimate hangout and entertainment area complete with fridge, sink, ice machine and pizza oven?” Whatever your vision, Angelo says, it can be achieved with Budget Home Supply’s line of Bull outdoor products and our line of outdoor cabinets

If an outdoor kitchen is calling you, don’t forget to look carefully into gas, electric and other considerations. Save yourself time and money by investing in professional support planning for the installation of gas, electricity, water, and drainage as needed

HOME AND GARDEN

Offering everything you could wish for when it comes to new and existing landscape installation at any scale, Turf Masters approaches projects personally and intentionally “Typically I’ll start by meeting clients myself, getting a full understanding of vision, budget, and space,” Ojeda says “I work with a lot of professional designers who help align ideas with the space itself At the forefront, we keep in mind functionality for the whole family, blended with beauty ”

Depending on your tastes and yard dimensions, you may want to consider hardscapes such as boulders, retaining walls, and pavers, Ojeda says. Water features like fountains, waterfalls, and raised garden ponds – even full, excavated ponds – can truly help life’s stressors flow off your shoulders

“Water features are beautiful, and they create beautiful, soothing sounds, too,” Ojeda says “They’re just relaxing They add to the landscape, and you can add extra fun to them, such as with koi fish

Depending on your tastes and yard dimensions, you may want to consider hardscapes such as boulders, retaining walls and pavers (Photo: Turf Masters)

They attract wildlife, too ”

While promoting relaxation, water features are also a lot of work, Ojeda says Those considering installing them will want to reflect on the ongoing maintenance,

including checking PH balance and winterizing If that sounds like too much, rest assured. There’s more than enough on dry land to rejuvenate your backyard into a swoon worthy, serene space

Barbecue with Georgia Boys

hat’s the number one thing you’re doing wrong on your home smoker?

Georgia Boys BBQ cofounder Matt Alexander says that most people using traditional smokers with logs are not controlling the heat “They’re getting it too hot too fast or opening up the smoker That’s a big one You’ve got to leave it shut as long as possible ”

Being careless with the temperature means it can vary 90 degrees from one side to the other What to do? Alexander – known to his coworkers as “Chief BBQ Guy” – gives our readers some great tips and tricks for making great barbecue at home

24 LONGMONT MAGAZINE LongmontMagazine com
FOOD AT HOME

Tip #1

“If you’re using a barrel-style offset smoker, place an aluminum pan full of water on the hot side. This dissipates some of the heat to the cooler side, making for a more even temperature throughout ”

When a couple of Georgia boys, Matt Alexander and Nick Reckinger, opened the Longmont location of their eponymously named restaurant in 2011, the goal was to get Front Range barbecue neophytes to fall in love with the slow-cooked barbecue they grew up eating, along with amazing Southern sides and hospitality Thirteen years later, with locations added in Frederick and Greeley, a food truck and a catering option, their Georgia barbecue is here to stay.

And what is Georgia barbecue, you ask?

At Georgia Boys, the melt-inyour-mouth meats are dry rubbed although the ribs are cooked with barbecue sauce and the turkey gets a mustard bath before it’s rubbed But what sets them apart is the love and care given to the delectable Southern sides Beans, handbreaded fried okra, sweet potato casserole, seasonal green bean casserole and more are prepared with comfort and hospitality top of mind.

“Part of the reason we’re still here is that we’ve stayed as true as we can to our roots,” Alexander says “We haven’t changed recipes or quality, we’re still using the same spices that we started with, and we’ve never downgraded the quality of our brisket We keep the culture

of Southern hospitality and being of service to people ”

Speaking of brisket, it is by far the hardest one to get right at home. It is notoriously tough to nail it If you’ve become an angry grill master because of brisket, take the following advice from Chief BBQ Guy

Tip #2

“Use the whole brisket The whole muscle has more fat content Get the flat done before the point. Let it cook roughly 12 to 14 hours (the flat should have reached 192 degrees internally), use a knife to separate the top point muscle, clean it up and put the point back on the smoker for another hour or two And then you’ve got the burnt ends that everyone loves

“Part of the reason we’re still here is that we’ve stayed as true as we can to our roots.”

Grillin’ season is nearly upon us, but we know some of our readers are out there tending the barbecue or the smoker in the dead of winter too Respect! You hardy lot have unlocked Matt Alexander’s third tip

Tip #3

“Toss a moving blanket over the smoker in the winter to help control the heat Low and slow, 225 degrees, is ideal Again, don’t open the smoker and don’t spritz the meat with a spray bottle Just leave it be. And this is important: Pick a good, solid wood We use a 50/50 blend of hickory and apple Hickory makes Southern barbecue what it is So start with hickory or oak as your base Then, cherry, peach or apple are great additions ”

We hope these expert tips have given you the confidence to do some great low-n-slow cooking at home But if you want to leave it to the pros, Georgia Boys BBQ in Longmont, Frederick or Greeley will treat you like family and make your tastebuds dance. Tell ‘em Longmont Magazine sent you!

MAXIMIZING YOUR HOME’S VALUE

Expert Tips on Basement Refinishing

As the post-pandemic explosion in Colorado property values continues, homeowners are always trying to find the most efficient way to maximize the potential of their home’s worth. If you have an unfinished basement that you’ve considered renovating to add a family living space, an additional guest bathroom, a bedroom or even a full-blown suite, that’s a winning and completely customizable strategy to add value to a home –provided you understand some of the costs and potential hurdles you might face

Chris Carter, owner and remodeling contractor at Refresh Renovations in Boulder County (refreshrenovations com), says basement projects will typically yield a 70% to 80% return on money spent to complete them That investment is even better if you plan on actively using your new family space, rather than simply investing for a short-term sale

“It’s still a pretty good rate of return if you’re looking to recoup what you’ve spent when selling a

home, even better than upstairs kitchen or bathroom projects,”

Carter says “You’re providing additional living space that adds square footage to a home, which is seen as more valuable than many other renovations you can do ”

Better yet, because your basement is isolated from the rest of your home, a full renovation project can be completed with less impact on your daily life There’s no need to move out while the big work is done, he adds Carter experienced that himself as he recently added a full suite at his own home to provide an on-site living unit to help take care of his father That included a full onebedroom apartment, complete with a kitchen, bathroom, living area and laundry room Depending on which Boulder County community you live in, there’s also the potential of creating a full rental unit in your basement, should you so desire

“For other homeowners, a renovation has meant projects such as adding two or three bedrooms and a bathroom, or even building a full man cave,” he says “One of our clients, in a new build that followed the Marshall fires, added a full golf simulator in his basement You can

do whatever you want to create family space, at the budget you can afford.”

Carter says the most important decision for homeowners is to figure out the scope of their dream basement project A simple finished family room addition offering a TV room or kids’ playroom, minus bathrooms, starts at about $50,000, and can expand from there, depending on bedrooms, bathrooms or other considerations

“I would anticipate two to three months’ work for a basic project, including planning and permitting, and up to six months for a major job, such as the suite I built in my own home ”

First up, make sure that your existing unfinished basement space is in the right shape to allow renovation work in the first place, especially in older homes A newer home with a well-poured concrete floor is easy, but some older homes may need foundation repairs or remediation work for drainage if there has been water leakage Our dry Colorado climate also means fewer headaches than permanently damp basement projects in other parts of the county Carter says naturally occurring radon gas can also be a problem, though testing and mitigation systems can easily alleviate that issue

Other issues that need to be factored into basement renovations include providing the required number of egress windows and exits, as well as making sure that stairs are up to code

Besides rooms themselves, other value-adding basement ideas include new ventless dryer/ washer combinations, which can be installed without adding external venting, as well as switching to a tankless water heater, which can free up valuable space and also provide a more environmentally efficient alternative than a constantly-heated, traditional 75-gallon tank

Miracle Method of Longmont

Helping to keep homes safe and healthy

Water is the ultimate enemy of a healthy, long-lasting home But, alas, we live in the modern era of indoor plumbing, so we have to find safe ways to manage our indoor water This means carefully managing and caring for our bathroom and kitchen spaces

Brian Weber owns Longmont’s Miracle Method, a tried-and-true strategy for durable, beautiful refinishing since 1979, with his wife Lynne. Together, the couple has been keeping local bathrooms and kitchens beautiful since 2002. But it’s not all about vanity. It’s also about the health and safety of your home.

“People that use fiberglass shower pans or tubs with cracks in them, pretty soon they’re replacing floors,” says Weber.

Fiberglass shower pans and

tubs can develop both stress and structural cracks This cracking is bound to happen eventually, but it’s especially likely if the tub or

shower hasn’t been installed or supported properly. And once the crack appears, it means moisture is getting through the fiberglass and into the parts of your home that are not meant to be wet, creating mold

Not only is this a major health concern for you and your family, but the appearance of mold also means a major, expensive project will be required

“People can’t use a shower that’s cracked,” says Weber. “It creates mold and it will ruin other things

Even tile walls – when they start to feel soft, we can’t resurface them They have to pull out the wall and deal with the mold that’s probably behind it.”

A better plan? Don’t let it get to that stage Luckily, the moment you notice a crack in your fiberglass tub or shower, there is a solution that’s quick, easy and affordable. These aren’t normally words that one associates with home repair projects, but Miracle Method is true to its name Many projects take just 3 to 5 hours, getting you back into

your bathroom within a day! This type of rapid service is crucial when it comes to fiberglass damage in the bathroom, as these spaces are completely unusable until the crack is repaired

“Don’t wait months for a contractor to get around to your project,” says Weber’s niece Sarah, who is involved in the family business “Miracle Method can get your project done quickly while saving you money We’re fast, we’re efficient and your downtime is minimal ”

You don’t have to overhaul your

entire bathroom just because the tub or shower pan is cracked. Don’t ignore these damaged parts of your bathroom because a full renovation isn’t in the budget right now Miracle Method offers an affordable solution that often leaves your tub or shower stronger than the original The Miracle Method team also ensures that the fiberglass material is properly supported, so new cracks won’t develop anytime soon Plus, it’s not just cracks that Miracle Method can fix The team can also address chips, rust spots, missing tiles or holes in your

fiberglass.

Once the repair is complete, you can choose to refinish the surface as well. Browse the wide selection of finishes and colors at Miracle Method’s showroom, located at 1822 Sunset Place, Suite A, in Longmont “Our Natural Accent line has the look of a stone finish and we have many color options in that line,” says Weber

The company stands behind its projects, too. With appropriate care and maintenance, Miracle Method refinishing can last up to 15 years or more. The product creates a chemical bond between old and new surfaces to ensure long-lasting quality. The company is so confident about the product’s durability that Miracle Method offers a five-year warranty for bath tubs, wall tile and fiberglass units Call Miracle Method today to learn how quick and easy it can be to have your bathroom good as new, and avoid a bigger problem down the road: 720.574.1095. thod of Longmont)

Designing a Garden

Embracing Xeriscaping, ColoradoScaping and Native Plants

In Boulder County, residents are turning towards sustainable landscaping practices to beautify their outdoor spaces while conserving water and supporting local ecosystems. Xeriscaping, ColoradoScaping and the use of Colorado native plants are leading the charge in this eco-friendly transformation, offering a blueprint for creating vibrant, resilient gardens attuned to the region’s unique climate and environmental conditions

Xeriscaping: The Water-Wise Approach Xeriscaping, a term coined in

Denver, Colorado, in the 1980s, refers to a landscaping method designed to minimize water use This approach is particularly relevant in Longmont, where semiarid conditions prevail, making water conservation a priority for gardeners and city planners alike Xeriscaping involves selecting drought-tolerant plants, improving soil health to retain moisture, and incorporating mulches to reduce evaporation It’s not just about cacti and rock gardens; xeriscaping can include a wide variety of plants that thrive in dry conditions, offering a palette of textures, colors and forms

ColoradoScaping: Tailored to the Local Environment

ColoradoScaping is a more

localized form of xeriscaping that focuses specifically on plants and landscaping practices best suited to Colorado’s climate This method emphasizes the use of native plants, which are naturally adapted to the state’s weather extremes, from cold, snowy winters to hot, dry summers

ColoradoScaping aims to create gardens that are low-maintenance and sustainable, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and excessive watering

Benefits of Embracing These Practices

Adopting xeriscaping and ColoradoScaping principles offers numerous benefits These methods significantly reduce water usage, an essential consideration in Colorado’s drought-prone areas They also promote biodiversity by providing habitats for local wildlife, including pollinators like bees and butterflies Moreover, these practices can reduce maintenance time and costs, as native plants generally require less care than their non-native counterparts.

Recommended Plants for Longmont Gardens

When designing a garden in Longmont using these principles, selecting the right plants is crucial Here are some native and droughttolerant plants recommended for the area:

Perennials: Penstemon (Beardtongue) varieties are a favorite, offering vibrant flowers and attracting hummingbirds. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) provides colorful blooms and is known for its resilience

Shrubs: The Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) and Gambel Oak (Quercus gambelii) are excellent choices for creating structure and providing habitat for wildlife

Grasses: Blue Grama Grass (Bouteloua gracilis) and Buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) are ideal for sustainable lawns, requiring minimal water once established

Design Tips for a Successful Garden

Plan for Diversity: Incorporate a mix of plants to ensure year-round interest and support a variety of wildlife.

Consider Water Flow: Design your garden to capture and utilize rainwater efficiently, using features like rain gardens or swales.

Soil Improvement: Amend the soil with organic matter to improve water retention and support healthy plant growth

Conclusion

In Longmont and Boulder County,

ColoradoScaping aims to create gardens that are low-maintenance and sustainable, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, pesticides and excessive watering (Photo:

gardeners have the opportunity to create beautiful, sustainable landscapes that reflect the unique character of the Rocky Mountain region By embracing xeriscaping, ColoradoScaping, and the use of native plants, residents can enjoy lush gardens that conserve

water, support local ecosystems, and stand resilient in the face of climatic challenges Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or a gardening novice, these principles offer a path to a more sustainable, vibrant outdoor space

garden

Colorado’s climate is contains five zones of plant hardiness. Your home’s zone can affect plant growth, seed dates and harvest times in your garden Our data will focus on zone 6a, which encompasses Northern Denver, Boulder and Longmont

A lot of the plants on this list can start indoors or outdoors, but find more success when rooted indoors first. Planning seed times can also be divided into two categories, moon times and frost times

Our list will focus on frost because it can severely affect gardens in Colorado, but the Farmer’s Almanac has an extensive chart for each area in Colorado for planting by the moon Make sure to look up frost times in your area before you get to gardening and have fun gardening this year!

Top 5 Reasons to Go Solar

Solar is a clean, renewable energy source that leverages Colorado’s more than 300 days of sunshine and represents the planting of thousands of trees or hundreds of forest acres to achieve an equivalent reduction of CO2 emissions

While there is no shortage of reasons to harness Colorado’s sustained sunshine for energy, Carbon Valley Solar’s Brett Hughett discusses the top considerations for Longmont-area homeowners

Cost savings & certainty. Going solar locks in your monthly electric payment for the long-term, while

avoiding future increases from the traditional electric utility provider It also avoids the vast transmission and distribution network that is largely responsible for driving up your bills annually

Home valuation Nationally, homes with solar have an average 4 1% higher valuation (or selling price) and that tends to skew even higher in Colorado Buyers recognize the value proposition of solar and are willing to pay more to secure the significant lifetime

savings that it presents.

Tax benefits. In addition to reaping the 30% federal investment tax credit, most homeowners who go solar can reduce the net cost by up to an additional 30% by leveraging a variety of other tax benefits

Environmental impact. Solar is a clean, renewable energy source that leverages Colorado’s more than 300 days of sunshine and represents the planting of thousands of trees or hundreds of forest acres to achieve an equivalent reduction of CO2 emissions. The impact is significant and real

Time-of-use value. While some electric utility providers charge a significant premium for peak time usage, solar allows homeowners to leverage the net metering and timeof-use concepts in their favor by storing excess produced power in a solar bank that they can later draw upon when needed

“Most people don’t realize that they can often go solar with no upfront money, up through and including installation,” Hughett says “Fundamentally, you’re just swapping your monthly electric bill for a fixed solar payment that doesn’t go up over time. And it doesn’t have to be your forever home to make sense. Only the homeowner that puts the solar on the roof gets the tax benefits and increase in equity ” If you have more questions about solar in your home, Carbon Valley Solar offers free, no-pressure inhome consultations 720 862 3309, solarpowerpros com

Enhancing Indoor Air Quality

Longmont’s HVAC Experts Offer Solutions for Healthier Homes

Breathing easy doesn’t always depend on the quality of the air outdoors

Indeed, for those with respiratory issues – asthma, allergies or other problems – the purity of indoor air can be the deciding factor in how well they’re breathing, even before they step out of the door That’s why a home’s HVAC system is critical – heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are the first line of defense

for anyone in the house, whether they have breathing issues or not

The good news is that Longmont residents don’t have to look far afield to find professionals dedicated to offering highquality, affordable and timely improvements to home HVAC systems Businesses like Longmontbased SAC Mechanical Heating and Air Conditioning and Carroll Mechanical Systems are experts when it comes to making breathing conditions in homes as pure as possible

It’s not only a matter of clear

vents and powerful air conditioners

At SAC, technicians have cuttingedge solutions when it comes to improving the air quality across all areas of a home

“We at SAC Mechanical truly believe that having a whole home air purification system is key to improving the health of all family members and friends in the home, while protecting their investments,” said Aaron Marcus, general manager “This would include whole home air filtration, whole home air purification, whole home humidification ”

For example, during the state’s coldest months, dry furnace air can trigger respiratory issues for many That’s why Carroll offers several humidifier systems designed to make indoor air breathable, even as cold weather rages outdoors

“A humidifier can deliver moisture to your air, making you feel much more comfortable during winter,” Carroll technicians explain.

“The EPA claims that you can save up to 4 percent on your heating bill for every degree that you lower your thermostat (You can) save some money, and increase your level of comfort by adding just the right amount of moisture to your air with a home or office humidifier ”

Wall furniture for cats, such as shelves, “trees” and other climbing structures, offer numerous benefits for both cats and their owners “Cats are natural climbers,” says Coral Amayi, humane education coordinator for Longmont Humane Society “Vertical spaces provide a sense of security and comfortable places to rest And an added bonus is less cat hair on the people furniture ” Wall-mounted features can also help in multi-

control over their environment

Wall furniture allows them to climb and explore vertically, maximizing their living space

Promotes healthy exercise: Climbing structures provide mental stimulation and physical exercise

for cats They can climb, jump and explore, which helps alleviate boredom and reduces destructive behaviors that may result from pent-up energy.

Territorial ownership: Cats are territorial animals, and having

vertical spaces to climb and perch on allows them to establish their territory within the home This can help reduce stress and anxiety, especially in multi-cat households

Space-saving solution: Wall-mounted cat furniture doesn’t take up valuable floor space, making it an ideal solution for smaller homes or apartments where space is limited

Scratching outlets: You can incorporate scratching surfaces on the wall near perches, providing cats with appropriate outlets for their natural scratching behavior.

Overall, wall furniture for cats offers a variety of benefits that contribute to the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of our feline companions while also enhancing the living environment for both cats and their owners

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

THE INN BETWEEN OF LONGMONT

Providing housing, support and stability

Residents at the Inn Between of Longmont each have their own unique stories that challenge pervasive myths about homelessness

Take for instance the trajectory of one mother who moved into one of the organization’s transitional housing units with her two kids. Her family had been camping because

their time at a safe house was up After a couple of steady years at The Inn Between, she expressed excitement to be moving into her own house where her kids could have birthday parties and sleepovers. The Inn Between has also been a safety net for a number of others, including a teenager who was working and going to school while living in her car in order to escape turmoil at home and a father who got ill and lost his car and home while he was temporarily out of work

The Inn Between of Longmont got its start three decades ago when a collective of nearly two dozen community agencies were looking for ways to address homelessness in the St Vrain Valley The organization’s founders realized there was a need for an agency that could provide affordable housing plus complementary supportive services to help residents get back on their feet

The Inn Between’s mission remains salient today, as the cost of living continues to rise in Colorado and inflation has driven up the cost of groceries Roughly six in 10 renters in Boulder County are “cost-burdened,” which means they’re spending more than 30% of their income on rent and utilities, according to a report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of

Harvard University.

“There’s a severe inventory shortage when it comes to affordable housing - that’s a problem that we all have to own as a community,” says Tim Rakow, Executive Director of The Inn Between of Longmont

How the Inn Between of Longmont Helps Break the Cycle of Homelessness

The organization currently owns six buildings, with 87 apartment units that range from single rooms to three-bedroom units In 2023, the non-profit housed 246 people, about 100 of whom were under the age of 18.

The Inn Between of Longmont provides time-limited affordable housing through its transitional housing program Households can live in affordable housing for up to three years, and, during that time, they pay rent that’s equivalent to roughly 30 percent of their gross income Many of these residents who graduate from the program give back to their communities.

There’s also a Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) Program that provides long-term affordable housing for those who are lowincome with disabilities or who are elderly Many of these residents are on fixed incomes and face mental or physical health disabilities that can make traditional housing a challenge PSH residents also put 30% of their gross income towards rent

In addition to providing housing, compassionate advocates work with residents to design a “Success Plan” which helps them come up with personal goals as well as plans on how to achieve them

The organization also offers dozens of life skill trainings that are led by experts, Rakow says, and that focus on topics like financial education and healthy relationships

The Inn Between of Longmont also has a resident council, which can
