SALUTE TO SENIORS Innovation and integrity: St. Vrain grads excel
St. Vrain Valley schools
Don Haddad St. Vrain Valley Schools superintendent
T
his month, St. Vrain Valley Schools launches approximately 2,000 outstanding graduates into their future. I am continually in awe of their academic achievements, strength of character and the inspirational leadership they bring to our communities. Our students have a genuine love of learning and a strong personal investment in how they can make a difference in the world. Their integrity, drive and confidence is a testament to the unwavering support they receive from their families, communities, teachers, staff and elected officials. I am incredibly proud to be ser ving such dedicated and engaged citizens through the deliver y of a high-quality education that has prepared them for their next journey.
If we reflect back to 13 years ago, when this year’s seniors were entering elementar y school, we see a ver y different educational environment than what our students experience today. In many respects, our graduates and our school district matured and grew up together. In 2003, our 1,237 high school graduates were entering life in the 21st centur y when public education was not ready to teach the skills they would need to navigate a globalized economy — a world centered on technology, discover y and problem-solving. District technology device replacements were on a 16-year life cycle, we had only partial WIFI in nine schools, and student choices in instructional focus opportunities were limited to only one or two programs districtwide. Since that time, the St. Vrain Valley School District has experienced a significant shift in what it means to provide a world-class education that prepares students for success in a highly competitive society. Through strong and passionate support, our community has forever transformed public education for St. Vrain Valley students. The passing of the 2008 bond and mill levy override (when our 2016 graduates were in fifth grade) and the 2012 mill levy override (when they were high school freshman) catapulted the district into a nationally recognized center of educational innovation with rigorous academics, exceptional focus program opportunities and outstanding teachers and staff. Our 2016 graduates had access to cutting-edge technology and could enroll in instrucPlease see GRADS, 7

bout 2,000 seniors are set to graduate from St. Vrain Valley high schools this coming weekend, most on Saturday. They took more rigorous classes than any previous graduating class, including Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and honors classes, plus college classes through partnerships with Colorado State University, the University of Colorado and Front Range Community College. The class of 2016 also includes Boettcher Scholars, National Merit Finalists, Daniels Fund Scholars and students who have earned athletic, performing arts and other highly competitive scholarships. Here are four of their stories:
Serena Zwart-Schafer signed up for an agriculture class at St. Vrain’s Career Development Center on a whim as a freshman at Niwot High because she heard she would get to spend time with horses. Those classes sparked a passion for agriculture. She’s resident of the FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America), ranked 12th in her class and headed to Colorado State University. She said she chose CSU for its strong agriculture program and proximity, allowing her to visit her family. She’s most interested in working with cattle, specifically with breeding and genetics. “I hope my excitement and enthusiasm can inspire someone else,” she said. She initially open enrolled at Niwot for the school’s International Baccalaureate, or IB, program. Then junior year, she had to choose between agriculture and IB, both time intensive programs, because of scheduling conflicts. She chose agriculture, and switched from IB classes to Advanced Placement classes. Her FAA projects included tutoring fourth- and fifthgraders at Erie Elementary and raising a breed of meat Please see STORIES, 17

GRADS from page 1 tional focus academics in energy, engineering and aerospace, medical and bioscience, leadership, STEM, and visual and performing arts. They took more rigorous courses than any previous graduating class, including Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, honors and concurrent enrollment through partnerships with Colorado State University, the University of Colorado, Front Range Community College and others. Since 2009 — thanks to
the hard work of our teachers, staff, students and parents — we have seen a 110 percent increase in the number of students taking Advanced Placement exams. The Class of 2016 has earned many Boettcher, National Merit Finalist and Daniels Fund scholarships. Additionally, many students have earned athletic, performing arts and other highly competitive scholarships, as well as admission to some of our nation’s most prestigious colleges, universities and
militar y academies. In the past five years, St. Vrain has received 88 state-level, national and international awards, and we have outperformed the state average on 94 percent of Colorado’s standardized tests. Over 78 percent of our schools are accredited with distinction or performance, and, according to U.S. News and World Report, we are home to four of the top 50 high schools in the state — the only district in Colorado’s largest 10 to have 50 percent or
more of eligible schools ranked. All of this was achieved at a time of rising academic standards, decreasing funding and some of the largest enrollment growth in the state. Where we are today and where we are going tomorrow is because we live in a region that understands the significant role public education plays in the future of our nation. I want to express my deepest appreciation to our greater community for what you have done to
support our students’ achievements and the transformation of St. Vrain Valley Schools into one of the best environments in the countr y for your children to excel. This year we have approximately 2,300 students entering kindergarten. By 2029, we project their class will have grown to almost 3,000 students who will walk across a stage to receive their St. Vrain diploma. As we continue our promise and commitment to champion success for
ever y student who walks through our doors, we will also continue to innovate and define what excellence in public education can do for our students and community. Congratulations to all of our 2016 graduates, on behalf of ever yone at St. Vrain Valley Schools. Thank you for growing with us and challenging us to continually improve and deliver an education that will best prepare our students for the road ahead.

STORIES from page 1 rabbits. She’s also working as a farmhand at Penner Farm. She’s learned to judge dairy cattle and bought two heifers from the Penners that she plans to show at the Boulder County Fair this summer. Her advice for the next batch of incoming freshmen: “Your time in high school is so limited,” she said. “Strive to do your best. Just really branch out and try something new.” In three years, Skyline High senior Giovanni Hernandez went from taking English-as-a-second language classes as a newcomer from Mexico to tutoring his classmates in the same situation. “I know the situation they are facing very difficult,” he said. “It takes time to learn English.” He said his parents moved here because they wanted him to have a better education and more job opportunities. Thanks to support from counselors and teachers, he said, he’s now taking honors and advanced placement classes at the Longmont school, helping him secure college scholarships. He’s planning to enroll at Front Range Community College in the fall, then transfer to the University of Colorado at Boulder. “I’m going to make my family proud,” he said. “If you have goals, nothing can stop you.” He initially wanted to become a pilot, but decided the long hours and time away from home wouldn’t

mesh well once he starts a family. Instead, he said, he’s considering engineering because he loves math and wants to improve his community. An advocate for immigrants, he’s an active member of the school’s LULAC, or League of United Latin American Citizens, chapter. At Skyline, the chapter stands for Leadership, Unity, Loyalty, Acceptance and Community. “I’m trying to get involved in the community,” he said. “I don’t want to be just another student. I want to be a voice for other people.”
Senior Miko Rios works at his dad’s sandwich and pizza shop in Platteville in his spare time, baking, cooking and running the front of the shop. The Frederick High student, who open enrolled because Frederick offered a wider range of classes than his home school, also is taking concurrent enrollment classes at Front Range Community College and holds several leadership positions. He attended a youth leadership conference in Washington, D.C., last summer, spoke at a recent Colorado Association of
School Boards conference and is a member of the district’s student advisory board. And as president of his school’s Key Club, a community service group, his favorite project was ringing a bell with the Salvation Army over holiday break. “I love my district and school,” he said. “They really helped me succeed. All the teachers and the leadership really care genuinely about the kids.” He loves his school so much, he said, he even had the word “warrior,” his school’s mascot, tattooed on his arm in
Hebrew as a tribute. His other love is traveling. He’s been to Amsterdam, Spain and twice to Israel. “I like seeing people’s cultures and seeing how other people live,” he said. “It helps you learn how to relate to people.” He was a Daniels Fund scholarship finalist and is still deciding between the University of Colorado at Denver and Denver’s Metropolitan State University. He plans to major in political science, and his dream job is working for the U.S. Department of State.
Maria Marquez-Rubio, a senior at Lyons Middle/ Senior, moved here with her family from Mexico when she was 12. “It was really hard for me,” she said. “Everything was new. I missed my friends. I was the top student in my school in Mexico. It was hard for me to get the assignments right here.” She said the small school environment at Lyons helped, as did the fact that she’s always loved school. She got involved by volunteering with the school’s booster club and helping tutor neighbor children. “High school has been a lot of work,” she said. “Graduating is going to be a big success for me.” One of her motivations to do well, she said, was setting a good example for her younger sisters. She will be the first in her family to go to college. “I want them to know here’s not a limit to anything,” she said. “The limit is the sky. Whatever they want, they’re going to achieve it if they work hard.” With math and science as her favorite subjects, she chose civil engineering as her career goal. She’s planning to start at Front Range, then transfer to Metropolitan State University. “I’m going to miss high school, but I’m ready for college,” she said. “I want to learn more and discover what’s next.” Amy Bounds: 303-4731341, boundsa@dailycamera.com or twitter.com/boundsa

Skyline High’s science, math efforts draw attention Sen. Michael Bennet had role in No Child Left Behind rewrite This article published originally Dec. 12, 2015. BY KAREN ANTONACCI STAFF WRITER Skyler Arnold, 16, pointed out the sections of the model roller coaster constructed from brightly colored K’NEX pieces that corresponded to the polynomial piecewise function to U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet Friday morning. Bennet visited Skyline High School for about 45 minutes Friday to observe how the school is advancing students in custom Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics curricula. St. Vrain Valley school district officials said Skyline’s cutting edge engineeringbased programs will benefit from a sweeping rewrite of the federal No Child Left Behind act that Bennet helped negotiate. Bennet was on the conference committee convened to find a compromise between the House and
Senate versions of the new bipartisan bill, Every Student Succeeds Act. Bennet stood behind President Barack Obama as the president signed the bill into law on Thursday. On Friday, St. Vrain Valley Area Superintendent Regina Renaldi beamed as Bennet talked to Skyline students about their model roller coasters. Renaldi said that the roller coaster program was part of a curriculum developed by Skyline Teacher Rebekah Cook over the summer. Cook taught her honors pre-calculus course about polynomial functions and then allowed students to use a free graphing program, Desmos.com, to plot their own piecewise function of height and time. Students then used K’NEX to turn their functions into functioning roller coasters. Renaldi said a federal education grant meant the district could pay Cook as she developed the learning program over the summer. Renalid praised the new dollars available for schools for innovative STEM programs as part of the Every Student Succeeds act. Plus, the new law loosens testing restrictions, allowing states to decide how and

Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colorado, is shown a project junior Skyler Arnold, left, and sophomore Benjamin Dashiell have been working on in a STEM class at Skyline High School, 600 E. Mountain View Ave. Bennett visited Skyline to highlight the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and to learn about the school's STEM program
when to administer standardized tests instead of requiring every state to measure students’ learning the same way. Renaldi said that change also would allow Skyline and other St. Vrain Valley students involved in robotics and other hands-on courses more flexibility in their learning.
“They still have to study, there’s no getting around studying,” Renaldi said. “But there will be fewer standardized tests which gives us more time to do creative work. We’re for giving our students more time to do this good work.” Bennet continued on his tour of Skyline, visiting with students on the school’s
robotics team and finishing up with a quick stop by Teacher Gerald Macon’s coding class. Bennet, who once served as superintendent of Denver Public Schools, queried 9th, 10th and 11th-grade students about the blocks of code they dropped into place on computer screens while 14year-old Jesus Oliva used an
iPad to direct the movement of a BB-8 Star Wars toy from the Boulder-based company Sphero. “We’ve got some other Spheros (robots) over there but the BB-8 is just a little more fun right now, and the head can move around,” Macon explained to Bennet and school administrators. Bennet remarked after the tour to a school official that he wished outgoing U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan could have come to Skyline to see what students were accomplishing in STEM. “When I see an environment like this where students are able to do real hands-on work like the case of the students working on their roller coasters, they do all the computer programming and the mathematics first and then they are able to apply it to something they could actually put their hands on,” Bennet said. “I think this is the difference between kids feeling bored and uncompelled and (thinking) not only are they going to succeed in high school but they are going to be able to go beyond that.” Karen Antonacci: 303-6845226, antonaccik@timescall.com or twitter.com/ktonacci
