Know what’s below: Call 811 before digging for landscaping and home improvement projects this spring (BPT) - With the snow melted and the ground thawed, many eager homeowners and landscape professionals across the country will roll up their sleeves and reach for their shovels to start projects that require digging this spring. During the transition into “digging season,” Common Ground Alliance (CGA), the association dedicated to protecting underground utilities and the people who dig near them, reminds homeowners and professional diggers that calling 811 is the first step toward protecting you and your community from the risk of unintentionally damaging an underground line. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a free call to 811. Installing a mailbox or fence, building a deck and landscaping are all examples of digging projects that should only begin a few days after making a call to 811. Calling this number connects you to your local one-call utility notification center. According to data collected by CGA in a phone survey in March, millions of American homeowners will likely do DIY projects involving digging this year, but 44 percent of them do not plan to make a free call to 811 before digging. Extrapolated to the full population of U.S. homeowners, approximate-
ly 58.5 million people will dig this year without first calling 811. A utility line is damaged every six minutes in America because someone decided to dig without making a call to 811 to learn the approximate location of buried utilities in their area. Unintentionally striking one of these lines can result in inconvenient outages for entire neighborhoods, serious harm to yourself or your neighbors, and significant repair costs.
atHome Colorado Home and Real Estate
As a result, CGA offers the following tips to make sure you complete your project safely and without any utility service interruptions, so you don’t become a statistic. Here’s how the 811 process works: 1. One free, simple phone call to 811 makes it easy for your local one-call center to notify all appropriate utility companies of your
intent to dig. Call a few days prior to digging to ensure enough time for the approximate location of utility lines to be marked with flags or paint. 2. When you call 811, a representative from your local one-call center will ask for the location and description of your digging project. 3. Your local one-call center will notify affected utility companies, which will then send professional locators to the proposed dig site to mark the approximate location of your lines. 4. Only once all lines have been accurately marked should you roll up those sleeves and carefully dig around the marked areas. There are nearly 20 million miles of underground utility lines in the United States, which equates to more than a football field’s length of utilities for every person in the U.S. Your family depends on this buried infrastructure for your everyday needs, including electric, natural gas, water and sewer, cable TV, high-speed internet and landline telephone. With that much critical infrastructure underground, it’s important to know what’s below and call 811 before digging. To find out more information about 811 or the one-call utility notification center in your area, visit call811.com.

The program also exposes students to a variety of industry careers through job shadowing and internships. Once employed, recent students can gain on-thejob-training leading to industry certifications and more education to enhance their careers. “There are a variety of jobs in the landscape industry and a variety of ways to enter the industry - whether right out of high school or by obtaining industry-based deTaking the long CAROL O’MEARA view is someCSU Extension thing at which the landscape industry excels. Career Pathways Program. Together they offer high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers hands-on training in basic landscape skills so they can bring these lessons to the classroom. “I personally think it’s a good career path. You start out in an entry level job and can work your way up, becoming project managers or supervising others,” says Angie McCreavy, teacher at St. Vrain Valley’s Career Development Center in Longmont. “People aren’t aware of all the career paths in the landscaping industry, they think it’s just digging holes or shoveling dirt.” Recently, high school teachers representing 10 Colorado school districts met for a two-day handson workshop in Fort Collins. Sessions focused on skills related to installing landscapes, such as installing brick pavers to create a patio, how to calculate accurate drainage and slope, and proper planting techniques. “Not every student can afford a four-year degree or wants to go to college immediately out of high school. This program helps make
students employable right after graduating and points the way toward additional education that can advance their careers when they are ready,” said ALCC Career Pathways Director Becky Garber. The landscape industry employs approximately 45,000 workers and brings more than $2 billion to the Colorado economy each year. There is a misconception that landscape jobs are manual labor and seasonal, but this program helps change the view of what a landscape career is, says McCreavy. “In reality, the industry provides a variety of positions such as design, turf management, and landscape management.” The desire to encourage careers in the landscape industry and grow the workforce has prompted ALCC members to teach the classes and others sponsoring it. How to restore raised beds without using dry fertilizers
Compensate for decomposition by adding high quality potting soil on top of last year’s surface. (Maureen Gilmer)
By Maureen Gilmer, Tribune News Service (TNS) Are your raised beds in jeopardy? Is the potting soil worn out after last summer’s intensive vegetable gardening? Did you plan to rejuvenate that microbial world before you replant? Maybe the fertility was gobbled up by last year’s crops. Maybe you need some rocket fuel to kick-start the nutrient levels so your plants explode into growth. Here’s how to quickly rehabilitate your raised beds so they become instantly enriched with the organic stuff plants need. The problem with dry organic fertilizers is their components take quite awhile to break down. Until they do your plants languish, lagging in their performance because they need food now, and so do the microbes that help them grow. A good strategy for small box gardens and raised beds is a no-till and almost no-work approach. Notill keeps existing microbes underground and protected to maximize populations. This is particularly true for mycorrhizae, fungi beneficial to plants that have a webby body destroyed by cultivation. Tilling doesn’t kill the fungi. It just knocks it back to interrupt the immediate benefits, too. 4

Whenever you mix a fertilizer into water, it is said to be “in solution.” That means its nutrition is mobile. Water is a carrier of nutrients of all kinds to bring them into the root zone for easy uptake. As the fertilizer-enriched drench filters down into the soil, it adds nutrients to depths well below the surface. This provides incentive for young vegetables to root deeply from the start. Dry fertilizers have always been dangerous because you work them into the soil, then water it all in so the particles gradually dissolve or disintegrate. If materials aren’t thoroughly mixed into soil or when too little water is used, breakdown slows. Such problems are often the result of dry fertilizers used indiscriminately with drip irrigated plants. West Coast hydroponic growers and drip irrigated market farms drove big demands for liquid organic fertilizers. They are used in fertilizer injector systems that add a steady delivery of nutrient-rich concentrate every time the water flows. In recent years, hydroponics has produced many new brands and crops available at garden centers or online.
Look for liquid products under Dr. Earth, Espoma, Peaceful Valley Farm Supply, Eleanor’s, Botanicare and Biobizz. Virtually all these fertilizers can be utilized for this kick-start planting method. Try any listed as organic such as fish emulsion. Mix the concentrates of your fertilizers in a big 5-gallon plastic bucket. Pour on immediately while everything is in suspension or it will settle out prematurely for irregular results.
SIMPLE FOUR-STEP REHAB 1. Scratch the top inch of the soil surface to break up crusting that repels moisture. It also opens the surface so moisture can move freely through carrying nutrients deeper down. Pull all weeds. 2. Thoroughly drench the soil surface with your nutrient solution. Follow that with a slow and thorough saturation of the entire soil mass so no dry pockets remain. 3. Add potting soil to bring your bed soil surface up to a proper elevation. Potting soil gradually decreases in volume over time, so

seeds remain moist and quick to germinate. 4. Use compost as your surface mulch to maintain soil moisture. Once you plant and seedlings come up, the compost can be layered around them gently as heat rises. Mulch reduces this evaporative potential, keeping plants and roots from yo-yo moisture levels. If you’re short on time and energy, this liquid method of getting your garden up and running is the solution. It’s really valuable in drier Western states, where moisture depletion is chronic and rewetting peat can be problematic. The real beauty is once you discover solutions, you can brew up a new batch anytime you want to give those beds more zest later in the season. ——— Maureen Gilmer is an author, horticulturist and landscape designer. Some brands even contain cancercausing toxins like formaldehyde and benzene. How’s that for a doozy of a catch-22? Although it sounds like a pretty bleak situation, there are many organic household cleaning products and brands that help you scrub away the dirt without leaving an even bigger metaphorical mess behind. In fact, if you know what brands to look out for while you’re shopping, it’s actually pretty easy to clean your home in a way that’s sustainable and healthy. To help you navigate the cleaning supply aisle at the drugstore, we rounded up a list of healthier alternatives at a variety 8

of price points. We hope you use our list of natural, effective supplies as a reference guide to help you identify the best ones for your home.
FOR THE LAUNDRY ROOM Millefiori Milano Perla Scented Fabric Softener ($28) This Italian brand is a great option if you’re looking for highend cleaning products that offer refreshing fragrances. This fabric softener doesn’t contain any toxic color additives, and it’s 99 percent biodegradable.
Jason Markk Suede Cleaning Kit ($12) Consider Jason Markk your new go-to line for all your shoe-cleaning needs. The products are reusable, which can help any efforts to minimize waste (and it’ll save you a trip to the store to restock). Even better, Jason Markk solutions don’t have any harsh chemicals and abrasives,
so they’re great for delicate surfaces. So go on and buff that suede, guiltfree.
Grab Green Natural Non-Chlorine Bleach Alternative ($15) Bleach, by definition, is a corrosive chemical. That’s why you probably recognize the distinct chlorine stench of it. Instead of reaching for bleach next time you need to brighten up your whites, opt for these naturally derived pods from Grab Green.
Le Labo X The Laundress Rose 31 Signature Detergent ($45) Le Labo knows a thing or two about creating luxury fragrances while The Laundress specializes in premiere cleaning products. So when the two merge, you get a detergent that’s almost too good to be true. Plus, it’s biodegradable and free of petroleum, phosphate, phthalates and dye.
Reporter-Herald – AtHomeColorado.com
FOR THE KITCHEN Babyganics Dish & Bottle Soap Refill ($10) Pediatrician and dermatologist tested, this baby-friendly line doesn’t have any phosphates, phthalates, sulfates, fragrances or dyes, so you can clean those sippy cups without worrying about harmful health effects.
The Laundress Kitchen Cleaning Gift Set ($75) This cleaning set is aesthetically pleasing enough to leave out on the drainboard. With a cleaning brush, lint-free cloths, scented vinegar, surface cleaner and dish detergent, you’ve got everything you need for the kitchen in one place.
Puracy Natural Dish Soap ($6) If you’re looking for something simple, vegan and organic, Puracy is a great option. They carry a variety April 29-30, 2017
of items, from detergent to lotion and hair care products. This dish soap is not only super affordable, but it’s also completely plant-based and green-living friendly.

Green Works Compostable Cleaning Wipes ($6)
By Ilyce Glink and Samuel J. Tamkin, Tribune Content Agency
Next time you go to the drugstore for another round of cleaning wipes, consider reaching for these compostable ones. You’ll be able to wipe down those surfaces as often as you see fit while also minimizing waste.
FOR THE BATHROOM Aesop Post-Poo Drops ($29) A superhero of sorts, Aesop’s post-poo drops are the great destroyers of unpleasant bathroom odors. Aesop products contain mostly plant-based ingredients, though they aren’t always 100 percent chemical-free.
Willful All Natural Wood Preserver ($16) Made out of beeswax, this natural concoction will help you preserve and maintain wood surfaces, utensils, cutting boards and pretty much anything else you can think of.
Full Circle Clear Single Spray Bottle ($12) While avoiding fumes and pollutants is an essential part of being environmentally conscious, it doesn’t stop there. If you want to reuse, reduce and recycle, this cleaning kit from Full Circle is a great place to start. You won’t have to toss your plastic bottles, thanks to the reusable bottle, and the cleaning solution recipe is completely organic.
Better Life All-Purpose Cleaner ($10) This cleaner spray from Better Life is great for pretty much any surface, from floor to ceiling and even in the toilet. ——— Get the latest on home decor trends, design ideas, shopping guides and food news, and take a look inside your favorite celebrity homes on DomaineHome.com. Having both a will and trust may be beneficial for family taking care of your estate
Q
: I’m a 30-something, female working for the city of Los Angeles. I bought a condo in 2015 (solely in my name). I am unmarried but have a live-in boyfriend. I’ve heard about living trusts from my parents. I am wondering if I need to have one in case something happens to me. If I don’t have one, what would happen to my condo? Also, can you please explain what the pros and cons are associated with living trusts? How much does it cost to create one and revise it, if needed? I also don’t have a will and am wondering which is more important to have, a living trust or a will? How will having either be affected if I get married?
A
: Both a will and a living trust are estate planning documents. A will is a document that allows you to designate who will inherit your real estate and personal property along with stocks, bank accounts and other items that you own. A will, however, will require your estate go through probate. That means that upon your death, someone must go to the probate court and deliver a copy of your will to the court. An executor of the will then is approved by the court and the executor can then handle the distribution of assets, sale of assets and take care of the other affairs of the estate under the supervision of the probate court. Obtaining a will isn’t difficult and an estate attorney or other attorney that has experience in drafting wills can take care of it for you. The cost can be rather basic for a simple will and can be quite expensive if your financial matters are complicated. When we say that the fee can be small, you might find attorneys willing to do simple wills for less than $1,000, but keep in mind that simple means very formulaic: You don’t have much in terms of real estate (other than your condo), some items of personal property
(jewelry, furnishings, a car, etc.) and some bank accounts. When you have many different real estate holdings, stock and bank accounts, minor-age children and distribution issues, you’ll find that attorneys will have to charge you more due to the additional work in handling the questions and the drafting of the document. We can’t tell you how much more as it will vary by location and the type of attorney you hire to handle the transaction. A trust is a document that allows you to transfer the ownership of your real estate, bank account and financial holdings to a different entity. That different entity is your trust. The trust would “own” these items, but you would be the beneficiary of the trust and thus control the trust and would be the “effective” owner of those items. But, on your death, the trust would still be the owner of your real estate, bank account and other financial holdings that were in the trust’s name. You wouldn’t need to go to court to have the court supervise the administration of those items. The successor trustee -- you would be the initial trustee of your own trust -- would handle your affairs and could sell off your real estate and sell off your stocks and close your bank accounts. Your trust could designate what you want done with your real estate holdings, your bank accounts and other holdings. The cost of setting up a trust can be a bit higher. That’s partly because you have similar document drafting issues as with a will, but you would also have the cost of having all of your assets retitled from your name to the name of the trust. When it comes to your home, you’d have to transfer title in your home to the trust. If it’s your car, you’ll have to retitle the car in the name of the trust. The same would go for bank accounts and accounts with financial institutions. If you don’t retitle your assets, they are not part of the trust. Here’s where it starts to get complicated. Since everything you own won’t go into the trust, you
Reporter-Herald – AtHomeColorado.com
will likely also need a will to make sure all of your assets and property are accounted for. So if you have a bank account that never got retitled or jewelry and other personal effects that are not owned by the trust, your will would dispose of those items as you intend. While paying for a will and a trust means a double payment, having both will cause the least pain for family members taking care of your estate after your death. In your question, you talk about your condominium. If that is the only thing you own, a will may be sufficient for you. But a trust might be equally as good. Or, both could allow you to own that now and cover other items in the future. What we are getting at is that your question is really specific to your situation, the value of your property and what you are looking to do, how to do it and how much you might be willing to spend now. Finally, one advantage a trust may have, depending on the state you live in, is protecting your premarital assets from spousal claims after marriage. However, in some states, if you live with someone long enough, your longterm partner may have similar claims. Since you are living with someone, you might want to have some agreement with them spelled out to address possible future ownership claims. You might even want to draw up a partnership type document if both of you are contributing toward the condominium expenses and costs. Please talk to a local attorney for more information. How do you take care of your lawn mower? for floating debris or oil that looks dark black. Old or contaminated oil should be drained and replaced. To change the oil, remove the drain plug underneath and allow it to drain completely. If your mower doesn’t have a drain plug, you’ll need to carefully tilt the mower on its side and drain through the fill hole. Be sure to consult your manual for the correct method and type of oil to use.
CLEAN OUT THE UNDERCARRIAGE
By keeping up with annual maintenance, your mower will run great this year and many years to come. (Angie’s List)
By Mike LaFollette, Angie’s List Angie’s List (TNS) Few pieces of home equipment take a beating like the lawn mower, yet it’s often neglected until it won’t start or something breaks. A lack of preventive maintenance almost guarantees an early death for your lawn mower, but you don’t have to be a mechanic to keep it buzzing.
READ THE OWNER’S MANUAL “It tells you how the maker of your mower wants you to take care of it,” says Chris Arvin, owner of Mow Better in Greenfield, Ind. “It’s
in their best interest to keep you, the customer, happy with their product so when it finally wears out in 10 to 15 years, you’ll buy another.”
DRAIN GAS AT SEASON’S END Lawn mower repair technicians say old gasoline is one of the main suspects when a mower won’t start. Arvin says you should run the remaining gas out of the mower or drain it at the end of each mowing season, and always use fresh gas in the spring.
CHECK THE OIL Monitor the oil level and look
Grass caked in the undercarriage can clog a mower’s discharge chute. Use a wire brush to scrape grass clippings and dirt from the undercarriage and spray the remaining debris away with a hose. Always disconnect the spark plug beforehand.
INSPECT THE AIR FILTER A clogged or dirty filter puts added stress on the mower and burns gas less efficiently. Most mowers have a paper or foam filter that can be easily accessed. Replacement filters are inexpensive, so most pros recommend an annual replacement to ensure optimal performance.
CHANGE THE SPARK PLUG Like the air filter, the spark plug is extremely important to a functioning mower, yet inexpensive and easy to replace. Change it every year to ensure an easy start. Unhook the spark plug wire and remove

Do the job with a utility faucet By Ed Del Grande, Tribune News Service (TNS)
Q In most cases, the laundry room sink may be just a free-standing tub sink. (Kohler) 10
AT HOME
: We’re making plans to finally have a sink installed in our laundry room and I have a faucet question. Should we look at kitchen or bathroom faucets to supply water to the sink? Thanks in advance.
— Patty, New York state
A
: Laundry sink faucets usually depend on the size and style of the room. For instance, a large fancy laundry room with nice cabinets, countertops and an under-mount sink may look best with a high-end kitchen faucet. But, in most cases (such as in my own house), the laundry room sink may be just a free-standing tub sink. In this case, I recommend you get a quality utility style faucet. Some laundry sinks even come with matching utility faucets. Utility faucets are durable and ideal for

the old plug with a socket or spark plug wrench. Install the new plug but don’t overtighten it or it could prevent the mower from starting.
SHARPEN THE BLADE Mower blades endure a great deal of stress thanks to rocks, large branches and other hidden objects. A dull blade rips and tears grass instead of providing a clean cut. Some people sharpen their own blades with a vice and metal file, but it’s not recommended for the inexperienced. A mower repair shop can sharpen your blade for a small fee, and it’s usually included with mower tune-up.
GET A PROFESSIONAL TUNE-UP It’s a great way to ensure your mower is in top working order for the season. A mower repair shop will drain the old gas from the mower, replace the air filter and spark plug and perform basic diagnostic tests. For a quick turnaround, take your mower in at the close of the mowing season or before spring grasses start to grow. Prices will vary depending on the shop, but you can expect to pay $50 to $75. ——— Mike LaFollette is a reporter for Angie’s List, a trusted provider of local consumer reviews and an online marketplace of services from top-rated providers. How I built a $500 farmhouse table for under $90
Farmhouse Table built for $90. (Sean Welsh/Baltimore Sun/TNS)
By Sean Welsh, The Baltimore Sun (TNS) My wife and I had the same dinner table since we first got married: a tiny, light-weight Ikea number that included four chairs for under $150. Just married and living in a townhouse with a dog, it was all we needed. And it was the right

price: under $200 for the table and chairs. Flash forward about 12 years and we were due for a new table — two homes and three kids later, the tiny Ikea table had outlived its usefulness for us. After procrastinating for about a year, I finally got us an upgraded table this spring — well, I built it.

For under $100. This isn’t the first time I’ve built something for our home. My wife and I built loft beds for our two older kids in successive years. They made fun projects and meaningful Christmas gifts. They were also affordable and relatively easy to make, thanks to plans from another handy parent’s website. So I went back to the well, using Ana White’s website again with a weekend project last month while my wife was out of town. A trip to Home Depot and about $80 later, I had all the supplies I needed — granted, a lot of the tools I’d already grabbed for past projects. But Home Depot made all the major cuts I needed to the specs on Ana’s website. Flash forward a few hours over two days — this can be done in a day if you don’t have three “helpers” under the age of 9, including an ornery 6-year-old obsessed with using the drill — and we had a new farmhouse table large enough to seat eight people comfortably.

It wasn’t without some frustrations — after all, I’m no professional furniture maker, and while those Ikea chairs I assembled a dozen years ago are still standing, some of the slats of them are attached wrong. But this is a doable project for the amateur wood worker. If you have a weekend free — I won’t know what that’s like again until after Little League season wraps up in early June — this is a do-able project. And it’ll improve your home five-fold what you spend. Now I just need to find time to stain it. Once that’s done, it’ll be on to another weekend project — perhaps a bench for the table, a new bed with storage space or the outdoor seating I’ve been coveting for our deck.
