Sometimes the most natural methods work best. You can get rid of mice using a reliable old snap-trap, and nothing takes out spiders like a rolled-up newspaper. But if you want to get rid of spiders and mice with minimal force, essential oils may be the solution for you. Peppermint oil pest control is an effective means of repelling spiders and mice. Spiders smell through their legs, and so they’re very sensitive to oils on the surface. Mice rely on their sense of smell, so they tend to be turned away from distinct essential oil odors. Mice tend to follow pheromone trails left by other mice, and peppermint oil confuses those senses. As a bonus, essential oils are environmentally friendly and safe for your family and pets compared to toxic chemicals.

HOW TO PREPARE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PEST CONTROL You have three options for setting up essential oils to repel mice and spiders: sprinkling it directly, spraying it or soaking cotton balls. If you know where pests are coming in, or have a suspicion — such as crevices, cracks, windows, and other hiding places — you can apply a line of undiluted oil across that entrance point. You can also create a diluted mix of water and a

the case of mice, you want to check those peppermint-soaked cotton balls every so often. Once the odor fades away, that cotton will make attractive nesting material for the mice. You want to make sure you place the essential oils right where mice are entering, rather than where they’re already getting in. Generally, you want to combine peppermint oil pest control with other measures. For mice, plugging up holes with steel wool tends to keep them out, since they have a You might not like spiders, but they’re an effective insect deterrent. You can also soak cotton balls in undiluted oil and place them near the entrances you want to block.

PEPPERMINT OIL: SPIDERS Peppermint is the most effective oil to repel spiders. Besides peppermint and spearmint, essential oils for spiders include citrus elements like orange, lemon and lime. Citronella, cedar wood, tea tree oil and

You obviously want venomous spiders to be far away, but in many cases, especially if they’re outside windows or doors, spiders are effective pest control all their own! 3 essential, smart kitchen devices controlled almost exclusively via the app.

SMART THERMOMETER

The Anova Precision Cooker sous vide machine allows home chefs to cook food low and slow under water in sealed plastic bags without the risk of overcooking. It clamps to the side of any pot, and users can control it via the smartphone app or on the machine itself. Starting at $149, www. anovaculinary.com/store. (Anova)

By Debbie Carlson, Chicago Tribune (TNS) Smart technology is making its way into the kitchen in ways big and small, but not everything will get you cookin’. Splashier items like Wi-Fi-connected refrigerators and stoves that let you operate them remotely look cool, but cooking experts aren’t sold on them yet for home use, noting that the technology may be obsolete long before the traditional aspect of the appliance stops working. Instead, they say three smart gadgets are worth a home chef’s dollars.

SOUS VIDE MACHINE A longtime favorite of chefs, sous vide machines are coming down in price and making their way into home kitchens. Sous vide machines June 10-11, 2017

Keep an eye on the temperature of your dinner with the Kitchen Thermometer Mini. This ultra compact, Bluetooth smart cooking thermometer lets chefs track a single temperature through an app, and the app includes dozens of preset temperature alarms. Cooks get an alert from their mobile phone or tablet when food is ready. $39.99, www.target.com. (Target) allow food to retain more flavor because food is cooked slowly in an airtight bag under circulating water at low temperatures. Both Chef Brian Schreiber, educational representative at Kendall College, and Lance Nitahara, lecturing instructor at Culinary Institute of America raved about them. “It’s a really great way to cook to maximize your flavor. I think in the next year or two, sous vide is going to pop up more and more, especially as people get more educated,” Schreiber said. “It creates a controlled environment that you don’t get with traditional cooking.” Although these machines are coming down in price, the two experts caution home chefs to not automatically pick the cheapest ones. “You get what you pay for,” Nitahara said. The low and slow cooking times make monitoring sous vide cooking from an app easy. There are two top smart sous vide machines, the Anova Precision Cooker ($149) and the ChefSteps Joule ($199). Tests by popular technology magazines show they essentially cook the same. The main difference is the Anova can be controlled by both manual touch and app, while the Joule is

Lisa McManus, executive tasting and testing editor at America’s Test Kitchen, said though some smart kitchen devices feel like either the technology or the device’s function is an afterthought, that’s not the case with a smart thermometer. In America’s Test Kitchen tests, the top choice was the iDevices Kitchen Thermometer ($39.99), a Bluetooth-enabled smart thermometer. When home chefs need to step away while cooking, being able to use an app to check on the food’s temperature is a handy way to avoid overcooking the meal. “It gave us accurate, clear temperature readouts, which is basically what you want in a good thermometer. The ‘smart’ side of this product — where it uses Bluetooth to send information to your phone — works as well as the thermometer itself. What’s more, applying smart technology here isn’t just an extra; it solves a real problem,” McManus said. A host of other smart thermometers are available, such as Weber’s iGrill2 ($99), which was made specifically for a grill’s high temperatures.

INDUCTION BURNER Nitahara said the induction burner is one of his favorite cooking

devices. These burners are more efficient than gas burners; they heat up fast and cool off quickly, plus they let chefs digitally control the exact temperature. “If you have recipes you did once and it turned out great, you can notate what number you set it to and get that number every single time. I use my pressure cooker and can adjust to the number I want it to be for maximum pressure,” he said. While most induction burners are part of complete ranges, some single induction burner plates are coming out that are Wi-Fi-enabled. Nitahara said to work on an induction burner, a pan must be made of a magnetic material, meaning aluminum pans won’t work. Hestan Cue’s single induction burner ($549) comes with a smart pan that works with the induction burner and includes a recipe app via Bluetooth technology that guides users through cooking and automatically adjusts the temperature for each step. Nitahara said he expects induction burners will become more popular. “It’s the future of cooking today,” he says. “A lot of kitchens are turning to induction burners.”

Induction burners can be set to the perfect temperature. The Hestan Cue connected cookware and the recipe app communicate with each other using Bluetooth technology, and embedded sensors automatically adjust the cooking temperature and time as you proceed through each step of a recipe. Includes an 11-inch pan and 1,600-watt burner, $549.99, www.hestancue.com. (Hestan)

to healthy lawns revolves around water. Most people don’t understand the water needs of their grass, and so overwater. This has led some people to believe that grass is bad for the environment when the opposite is actually true,” said Ed Markham, President of the RMSG. “By working with a leader in water conservation, and the scientists that study the water needs of turfgrass, we will be able to conduct a very valuable educational campaign this summer. We are pleased to be working together.” Dr. Mary Hattendorf, Water Management Conservation Specialist with NCWCD added, “Through my work studying the water needs of plants I understand the benefits that turfgrass provides. It often gets a bad rap. However, plants such as Kentucky Bluegrass have the ability to go dormant in a drought, some-

thing that is very valuable in our arid climate, but not understood by many. Through this partnership we will work to provide more factual information that consumers may rely on when making their plant choices and managing their turfgrass.” The RMSG recently received a Specialty Crop Grant through the Colorado Department of Agriculture. The grant will be used to educate the general public, and municipalities, concerning the facts about turfgrass water usage, benefits to the environment and increasing property values throughout 2017. ————————————— For more information or to locate a list of sod specialists, visit sodgrowers.com.

June is Pollinator Month One of the best parts of being a gardener is that I’m never alone. In the quiet of the morning or heat CAROL O’MEARA of noon, CSU Extension there’s a buzz of activity that surrounds and uplifts me whenever I spend time out there. Dodging past butterflies clumsily flitting about, bees zipping from flower to flower, and making way for beetles muscling their way around remind me that a large part of the garden is the life within. I can’t imagine a garden without it and neither can Governor Hickenlooper who, mindful of the contributions and importance of our tiny neighbors, declared June Colorado’s Pollinator Month. “This month we celebrate and honor the small but mighty bee,” said Gov. John Hickenlooper. “Bees, and other pollinators, are crucial for our ecosystem and the starting point of the food chain that serves countless species, including humans! The out-sized work of bees makes them truly fantastic creatures.” The designation is part of a

larger effort by the People and Pollinators Action Network and the Colorado Pollinator Network to raise awareness for the bees, beetles, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, and flies that spread love around plants. “At Boulder County we understand the critical importance of raising awareness for pollinators and their role in our environment,” said Boulder County Commissioner Deb Gardner. “Pollinators are essential to agriculture and Open Space ecosystems and are an important part of creating a more sustainable Boulder County. We encourage community members to take part in some, or all, of the fascinating Pollinator Month activities and events taking place across the county throughout the month of June.” Says Jessica Goldstrohm, CoChair of the Education and Outreach Workgroup of the Colorado Pollinator Network with Amanda Accamando: “We’re showcasing

pollinators so people can engage with them, personally connecting with them through observation in their own yards.” Events planned throughout the month are designed to help people learn to recognize and observe their pollinators, which are more than just honeybees. “We have over 950 native bees in Colorado, which are different than honeybees that were originally brought over from Europe. About 70-percent of the natives nest underground; they live with us in our yards without us knowing,” said Goldstrohm. Native bees are important in the pollination of crops such as squash, tomatoes, or eggplant, according to The Bee’s Needs website, part of the University of Colorado’s Museum of Natural History (beesneeds. colorado.edu/ ). These crops aren’t pollinated by honeybees. If a lack of eggplant doesn’t motivate you to help protect pollinators, consider other things

they bring us: coffee, vanilla, and chocolate. How can you help keep pollinators happy? Plant flowers, says Goldstrohm. “There’s not enough food in the landscape. In urban settings, there are a lot of green lawns but not flowers. Most bees only travel 250 to 1500 feet to get food,” she said. Check out the list of bee-friendly plants on her website, the Bee’s Waggle: thebeeswaggle.wordpress. com/2017/05/03/colorado-pollinator-garden/. Remember that pesticides, especially insecticides, can harm pollinators, so go easy on them and avoid broad spectrum sprays. Read and follow the label on any product, paying attention to restriction on applying to plants in bloom. “People are open to the idea of protecting pollinators and our state can be an example of how to do it,” Goldstrohm said. Throughout June, Colorado museums, libraries, businesses, gardens and farmer’s markets will be hosting pollinator activities and events. In cases where your offer is dramatically lower than others, a letter may not make a huge difference. However, if competing offers are close in price, a personal touch can make a world of difference.

Remove Contingencies There is also the option to eliminate certain contingencies. For example, you can waive the right to an inspection. This approach does come with risks. You should only remove contingencies if you fully understand the risk and feel comfortable with doing so.

LIFESTYLE CUSTOM HOMES BY ED RUST Building Homes of Distinction in Northern Colorado Open and bright spaces are showcased throughout this model, including a master with its own balcony.

L.L. Charles, At Home Ed Rust, founder of Lifestyle Custom Homes, knows homebuilding from the inside out. He started out as a framer and designed and built his first house as a general contractor almost 30 years ago. His passion for architecture and construction are evident in each of the hundreds of Lifestyle Custom Homes that have been built throughout Northern Colorado. Lifestyle Custom Homes by Ed Rust is represented by The Group, Inc., known for setting new standards in

real estate excellence for more than 40 years. Ed Rust has worked with The Group, Inc.’s Broker Partner Melissa Doherty for 22 years, building people’s homes in a truly collaborative way. Because first and foremost, your home is created for you, the homeowner. “We make the new construction process so simple. New construction is fun,” Doherty says. “If you want a front master, we create a new floor plan to accommodate this. If there’s a floor plan we have that we can bump here or there, we will. Custom detailing and smart home technologies

are built in to meet your needs and desires.” Most builders can’t deliver this high standard of customization or creative thinking, Doherty notes. “Everything we touch, at every price point, is personalized and customized. Every homebuyer gets the same personal attention and care,” says Doherty. “We just love building homes.” Lifestyle Custom Homes currently has four projects underway in Northern Colorado, each fitting a range of personal and family needs. Rust’s commitment to building the right home for each buyer shines through every time.

These Johnstown homes are the quintessential Colorado residences, blending stunning living spaces with views of the Big Thompson River and Longs Peak. Each lot backs to the river or open space, to celebrate the unparalleled landscapes. Prospective homebuyers can check out an example of the architecture and landscaping at 4112 Watercress Drive. tion,” says Doherty. The Mountain Modern has a two-story main floor master bedroom, and each bedroom has ensuite bathrooms and walk-in closets. The details in these homes, from contemporary handrails and high-end appliances to an outdoor kitchen, highlight an appreciation for form as well as function. Thompson Crossing homes start in the $600,000s and are not in a metro district.

Belmont Ridge Butting up to Windsor’s abundance of trails and parks, Belmont Ridge homes offer a healthy mix of urban convenience and rural “elbow room,” says Doherty. The subdivision is near Centerra and the Budweiser Event Center. The seven large lots range from 11,000 to over 16,000 square feet. Lifestyle Custom Homes offers more than eight floor plans to choose from, but buyers can customize as they please. “This is your home, not ours,” Doherty says. Belmont Ridge homes start in the low $500s and are not in a metro district. Two homes are scheduled for delivery in just weeks. June 10-11, 2017

Harmony Club Tinmath’s Harmony Club is centered among a range of luxurious family and communityoriented amenities for residents of all ages. The development is served by the trailblazing Poudre School District and includes a golf course and shared swimming pool, all against a backdrop of classic Northern Colorado views. One home, a four-bedroom ranch with a finished basement at 4020 Portrush, is completed and construction recently began on two more. Harmony Club homes start in the $800s and are not in a metro district.

Heron Lakes— A TPC Golf Course Lifestyle Custom Homes has several lots available at Heron Lakes in Berthoud, a masterplanned community built around a PGA Tournament Players Club Golf Course. The 18-hole course is slated to open in the spring of 2018. In addition to world-class golf, the development offers mountain views, lake fishing, neighborhood parks, and almost 10 miles of hiking and biking trails – just four miles from downtown Berthoud. Each Lifestyle Custom Homes lot backs to the golf course, water and green space, Doherty

says. “Of course, each home has big mountain views. This is really a showcase community.”

Home Décor

I never pay full price for furniture. Here’s where I shop so long that it doesn’t bear discussing, and I’m always looking for new sellers, designers, vintage finds, and deadstock items. While most people I know use it for fashion and accessories, eBay also has an incredibly broad furniture and décor range, but one area it particularly excels in is rugs, especially the vintage Turkish and kilim styles. It has one of the biggest selections of handwoven and soumak styles. Some eBay sellers have even converted these stunning tapestry rugs into decorative pillows, and I guarantee you will want them all.

You can find some rare and gorgeous finds if you have time and patience.

CHARISH Chairish is one of my favorites for furniture. It has all the best designers, from Hans J. Wegner to Knoll, at the very best prices. If you have a limited budget, head straight to the sales section because this site was made for bargain hunters. You can even search by price and choose from as little as $100 and under in

Local markets are an excellent resource for rare and unique furnishings. (shutterstock.com)

By Sacha Strebe, Domaine (TNS) When it comes to furniture shopping, there’s nothing I love more than scoring a deal on a vintage treasure or rare find, but it’s the thrill of the hunt I covet most. That feeling you get when you find something special at a bargain price (especially after you’ve trawled through the clutter to get it) is surprisingly addictive. Call me a discount devotee, but I can’t get enough, and since you’re reading this, I’ll assume you feel the same way. There’s an art to finding the gold among the garbage, not to mention how time-consuming the process can be, and quite frankly, who has the time? Thankfully for you, this is one of my favorite pastimes. So today I’m sharing a few of my favorite haunts, both virtual and physical, where I frequently find discounted and affordable furniture and decor. You’re welcome.

ONE KINGS LANE There’s something magical about One Kings Lane. I was introduced to this treasure trove when I moved to the U.S. last year, and now I have a serious habit. In fact, I find myself on the site doing a quick check of its clearance section almost daily. There 10

are always new markdowns, and not just minor ones: I’m talking up to 50 percent off, like this amazing turquoise chandelier and this gorgeous gold votive holder, which has been marked down to a mere $9 — that’s a discount of 64 percent. Sign up for the newsletter and follow the site on social for sale reminders.

ETSY While I love Etsy for its handmade, one-of-a-kind crafts, it also has an insane amount of cool vintage furniture at awesome prices. I’ve stumbled upon so many amazing designer furniture pieces with price tags you wouldn’t believe. The site also has a big range of superspecial one-offs and vintage decor items you won’t find anywhere else. Keep an eye on the Venice Vintage Paradise store and similar shops that are updated often with rare finds. You have to be quick to get the deals, though. Our editorial director recently secured an incredible 1920s vintage rug for just $265. Beautiful pieces at bargain prices — that’s Etsy.

EBAY I have a major eBay addiction, and I can honestly say I look something up on the site at least once a day (if not twice). I have a watch list

ESTATE SALES

the drop-down menu. There is so

Estate sales are a fantastic place to score deals on furniture, but the real-world versions can be intimidating, especially if you’re not a selfproclaimed estate sale junkie. Don’t get me wrong: I love the thrill of a sale, but there’s something cutthroat and competitive about estate sales that scares me a little. If this is you, too, stick to the online versions. Everything but the House has an amazing lineup of furniture, with bidding starting as low as $1. Paddle 8 is another great auction house that steers more toward collectors with some seriously high-end items; it’s definitely worth a look. If you’re a newbie to the estate sale, there’s plenty of great common-sense advice out there for those who want to navigate the physical estate-sale circuit.

much variety here, which also means a lot of scrolling to find what you want, but that’s part of the fun, right? I personally love Chairish for its original artworks. You can find some truly distinct abstract paintings at insanely affordable prices.

LOCAL MARKETS My absolute favorite place to discover rare and unique furniture is at flea markets, antique fairs, and swap meets. As an L.A. local, the Rose Bowl Flea Market is my go-to each month. The event features some of the best selections, from really high-end designer fare to neat and thrifty finds. At the recent event, my husband and I found a leather rug

CRAIGSLIST This isn’t the first time I’ve professed my love for Craigslist as a place to source affordable furniture — it’s also great for finding a rental — it’s just so good that it’s worth mentioning twice. I can honestly say a decent chunk (at least 80 percent) of my apartment’s furniture came from Craigslist. My husband and I are always on the Craigslist app searching for secondhand midcentury pieces and designer furniture near our area. We found a gently used LC4 Corbusier chaise for $300, a Restoration Hardware industrial wooden dining table for $200 (they even threw in some chairs for $50), and four navy Emeco-style chairs for $50 each. We set up our entire first apartment with the bare bones for under $1,000, thanks to Craigslist.

Reporter-Herald – AtHomeColorado.com

for $40, a magazine rack for $20, and a cool industrial end table for $40. It was a good haul that day. Now we’re making plans to check out the Long Beach Antique Market and the Santa Monica one, too. Type “antique fair,” “flea market,” or “swap meet” into Google and you’re sure to find the popular events in your local area too. They are totally worth it for the deals and the fun. ————————————— Get the latest on home decor trends, design ideas, shopping guides and food news, and take a look inside your favorite celebrity homes on DomaineHome.com. “Secret Seller Program Helped Us Sell Our Home in 3 Days, After Finding Our Next Home” Loveland, CO Kendra and Matt did something unusual after they decided to move to Johnstown. Knowing that the market for new homes was tight this spring, they certainly didn’t want to sell our home before they found a new one. Enter Nanci Garnand and her Secret Seller program. According to Kendra, “we contacted Nanci and let her know

Pet of the Week: Toby

our dilemma.” She came out, gave us an idea of what our house would sell for, and what we needed to get done to be able to sell it, when we were ready. In fact, she had everything prepped for a quick turnaround when we were ready. Enter our house search. On our very first day out, we found the perfect home for us and put in an offer. Because Nanci had given us an

idea of how much our own home was worth, we were in a strong position and our offer was accepted. Because she had all the paperwork prepared, we listed our home on Thursday and had it under contract by Saturday, after receiving multiple offers! We’re very happy in our new home and highly recommend Nanci & the SecretHomeSeller.com
