LOVE

COMMITMENT BY SANDI Y. SQUICQUERO

Be each others’ support system and always be on the same team with each other. (Shutterstock)

O

ne of the many problems that I encounter as a psychotherapist is marital discord and unhappiness. Why are so many relationships in trouble? As wonderful and exciting as love can be when we are in it, it can be devastating when we fall out of it. It is estimated that 50 to 60 percent of all relationships end in divorce. Divorce involves real people and is much more than statistics. One of the major problems I see in relationships is the breakdown of communications. Communicating is not easy. The way you communicate with your spouse or significant other is one of the most important aspects of a marriage. Communication is easy during the honeymoon phase of our marriages. Then disappointment, arguments and disagreements take its place. Discord usually always begins with disappointment. Disappointment can begin early on in a marriage and is often unavoidable because of the differences and perceptions of the two people involved in living the good life. An example of this is when you feel discouraged because your spouse

10 | mywindsor | FEBRUARY 2024

or mate may not be spending quality time with you. Perhaps he or she is often away working or when he or she is at home, tech or the puppy has become his new best friend. Somehow needs are not understood or comprehended until your new best friend hears in a heart-to-heart chat how unhappy you are. Men usually are silent and do not communicate their marital problems to their wives or their friends. When the primary focus of a relationship is negative, it is difficult to keep your relationship in the present and growing. If your relationship with your spouse is in discord there is still hope. Marriage takes work if it is going to thrive and grow. A few keys to live by and to divorce-proof your marriage are: • Forgiveness and selflessness • Perseverance • Renewal • Commitment • Celebration In forgiving you begin with a new slate. You not only forgive for yourself

you communicate acceptance to the one who hurt you. With perseverance, you ground yourself so that you can handle any storm that comes along together. You renew your vows, your covenant and commitment that you made when you were married and you celebrate your renewal as often as possible so that your marriage does not grow stale. Tend to your marriage as you would a garden or a plant, care for it daily. When you think of your dream marriage, realize that it is not a union without concerns and problems. The quality of your relationship is paramount to a healthy marriage. If your husband wants to visit Best Buy The quality of your relationship is paramount to a healthy marriage. (Shutterstock)

Love means that you stand steady in troubled times. (Shutterstock)

and this is not your favorite thing to do, go with him. If your husband wants time away by himself don’t whine that you never do anything together, but let him have his freedom. He will come back to nest. If your wife needs time out with her girlfriends to de-stress, realize that she needs a time out. Be each others’ support system. Be on the same team with each other. Commit to never using the “D” word — Divorce — with each other. You do this by not breaking your faith with each other. You are not only making a statement to each other by doing this you are making a statement to future generations.

Children today need to know that marriage is for life and forever. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day this month, I am reminded of my Valentine and what love means to me. Love to me is a commitment and a covenant which I take very seriously. Love to me means that you stand steady in troubled times and ground your relationship so that when a storm comes, you can ride it out together and see the rainbow after the storm. Our storms have made us stronger. I had my first date with my husband David on Valentine’s Day. I try not to take him for granted but I know at times I do. I appreciate the things he does for me though at times I may not show it. Many years ago I asked him this question

as I do now, “Will You Be My Valentine?” He said yes! Sandi Y.
